  • 403 Forbidden error on Mac OSX - Apache and nginx

    Hi All, There are a million questions like this on Google, but I haven't found a solution to my problem. The default Apache install on my Mac is giving 403 Forbidden errors for everything (default directory, user home directory, virtual server, etc). After sifting through the config files, I figured I'd give nginx a try. Nginx serves files fine from it's home directory, but it won't serve files from a subfolder of my user directory. I've configured a simple virtual host, and requesting index.html returns a 403-forbidden. The error message in nginx's log file is pretty clear - it can't read the file: 2011/01/04 16:13:54 [error] 96440#0: *11 open() "/Users/me/Documents/workspace/mobile/index.html" failed (13: Permission denied), client: 127.0.0.1, server: local.test.com, request: "GET /index.html HTTP/1.1", host: "local.test.com" I've opened up this directory to everyone: drwxrwxrwx 6 me admin 204B Dec 31 20:49 mobile And all the files in it: $ ls -lah mobile/ total 24 drwxrwxrwx 6 me admin 204B Dec 31 20:49 . drwxr-xr-x 71 me me 2.4K Dec 31 20:41 .. -rw-r--r--@ 1 me me 6.0K Jan 2 18:58 .DS_Store -rwxrwxrwx 1 me admin 2.1K Jan 4 14:22 index.html drwxrwxrwx 5 me admin 170B Dec 31 20:45 nbproject drwxrwxrwx 5 me admin 170B Jan 2 18:58 script And yet, I cannot figure out why the nginx process cannot read index.html.   • Can Office365 (Enterprise) sync from a remote LDAP server?

    I am looking in to the details of a migration to Office365 - primarily for the use of hosted Outlook capability. I see that the Enterprise plans have "Active Directory Sync", but details seem scarce. Is it possible to sync an independent LDAP server (such as Apache Directory) up to O365 (I want to keep it separate), or would I need to host a local instance of Active Directory and use that to sync users up to O365?

  • Deleting another user's diretories from my own

    I am a non-root user, and have made a directory into which other users in my group can write. The directory is setgid, so files and directories within it have the same group. I can delete files placed into this directory, but if a user creates a subdirectory with files in it, I can't seem to delete those. Is there something special I can do (other than, say, bothering the user in question or the sysadmin about it) to get rid of this subdirectory?

  • Same index for all (sub-)directories?

    Hi. I was wondering if it was possible to write some .htaccess page that makes the server use an index.php file in a SINGLE directory as the index file for every directory/sub-directory on my server, rather than placing the exact same index.php in 200+ directories. If my description isn't clear, what I essentially mean is: /files/index.php is to be used as the index for, for example, /files/morefiles, as well as the index for all directories and sub-directories within /files/, even though those directories would not have an index file themselves.   • Adding user groups from a remote domain server to permissions of a remote desktop terminal server fails. why?

    I have 3 computers, two of which are servers running Windows Server 2008 and another running Windows 7. One of the servers has the following roles installed; Active Directory, DHCP and DNS. The other server has a Terminal Server role installed. I am trying to log-on to the Terminal Server via Remote Desktop using the Windows 7 machine with credentials from the Active Directory server. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, no. Whenever I try to add users or groups from the Active Directory Domain server to the Terminal Server's permissions for RDP it seems to ignore, or forget, them. Though the various methods I was able to find it either adds a strange sting of numbers after the user group or the logo to the left has a question mark on it, reopening the dialogue box replaces the user group with the name of the Domain. I am confident I have the Domain setup correctly as I am able to log-on to users in the Active Directory from other computers I have put in the Domain, and when I attempt to browse the user objects from the Domain I am prompted with a username/password field and am able to view the structure of Active Directory objects. Please advise.

The Brain Eaters app is a sample app from my soon to be released book Windows 8 Apps with HTML5 and JavaScript. The game illustrates several important programming concepts which you need when building Windows 8 games with JavaScript such as using HTML5 Canvas and the new requestAnimationFrame() method. If you are looking for Halo or Call of Duty then you will be disappointed. If you are looking for PAC-MAN then you will be disappointed. I created the simplest arcade game that I could imagine so I could explain it in the book. All of the code for the game is included with the book. The goal of the game is to eat the food pellets while avoiding the zombies while running around a maze. Every time you get eaten by a zombie, you can hear my six year old son saying “Oh No!”.   • OOP oriented PHP app source code samples and advice

    The day I have been dreading has arrived. I never felt OOP or good software design was important(I knew they were important, but I thought I could manage without them.). However having read otherwise almost everywhere on the interwebs, I started dreading the day when my client would ask me for new features in an existing app. The day has come and the pain is unbearable! I have never coded my PHP websites "properly"(PHP is my primary language and the bulk of my work. I am learning Python (using web2py)) I take care that the website doesn't fall apart in a daily use scenario. I code pages like I was creating a list of static html files with bits of "magic code" in each of them(this bugs me a lot). How do I make the whole app more or less a single object? For eg. How do I design the object model for an invoicing app? I use a lot of functions for doing any particular thing in the same fashion throughout the app(for eg. validation, generating ids, calculating taxes etc.). I know the basics of OOP in general. Can anyone point me to source code samples of functional apps written in php? Or can someone provide pointers so I can recode my existing apps in a more modular way.

  • Kindle App for WP7 arrives

    If you had asked me if I was interested in owning a Kindle device, then my response a couple months back would have been a flat out no back then. So what has changed between now on then you might be asking me then? I would have to say watching my wife enjoy the many books in digital form has peeked my interest to start with now. Was that enough for me to buy a Kindle though? Not just yet, but that is where the Windows Phone 7 comes in for me once again. It’s no secret that I’ve wanted this device and yes it does have a number of Apps that I think I’ll really enjoy. The latest must have App for me, will most certainly be the Kindle App for Windows Phone 7, released from Amazon today. I’ve already started playing around with the PC version of Kindle software and I’m looking at purchasing any future books in digital form now. So it’s a given once I have a Windows Phone 7 device, that I’ll be enjoying some of my favorite books, while I’m on the go I think and via this App. Tonight I actually had a chance to check out the WP7 Kindle App on a friends device and I was really pleased with how it looked and performed. Now if the planets could only manage to lineup for me and allow Verizon and Microsoft to come to terms on the releasing of WP7 CDMA devices, I just might be able to really enjoy some of this on my own. Do I rule out ever having an actual Kindle device? Not at all, but I do plan on having the WP7 device well before that day ever comes though.

  • Modular Web App Network Architecture

    Assuming that I am dealing with dedicated physical servers or VPSs, is it conceivable and does it make sense to have distinct servers setup with the following roles to host a web application? Reverse Proxy Web server Application server Database server Specific points of interest: I am confused how to even separate the web and application servers. My understanding was that such 3-tier architectures were feasible. It is unclear to me if the app server would reside directly between the web and database server, or if the web server could directly interact with the database as well. The app server could either do the computational heavy-lifting on behalf of the app server or it could do heavy-lifting plus control all of the business logic (as implied in the diagram above, thus denying the web server of direct database access). I am also unsure what role the reverse proxy (ex. nginx) could and should fulfill as a web server, given the above mentioned setup. I know that nginx has web server features. But I do not know if it makes sense to have the reverse proxy be its own VPS, given that the web server–in theory–would be separate from the app server.

  • Developing an iOS app for a single device - licensing issue

    I'm developing an iOS app for a museum as a freelancer. It's a very simple video player, to be installed on a single iPad that will be part of a permanent exhibition, basically acting as a kiosk. It turns out the iPad is the ideal device for that if you're looking for a small and affordable touchscreen. The problem is: as far as I can tell, none of the Apple Developer Program options available will allow me to distribute an app like that. The relevant options are (from the link above): iOS Developer Program ($99/year) Select this program if you would like to distribute apps on the App Store as an individual, sole proprietor, company, organization, government entity or educational institution. iOS Developer Enterprise Program ($299/year) Select this program if you would like to develop proprietary apps for internal distribution within your company, organization, government entity or educational institution. The regular program requires distribution through the App Store. The Enterprise version is for internal distribution within my own organization. Neither is the case here! It seems like I'm doomed to violate Apple's terms of service (and I can think of at least two ways of doing that: jailbreaking, or changing the iPad's date so it won't know the provisioning profile expired). Is that really so, or did I get the descriptions wrong? Has anyone here been in a similar situation?

  • Why do I get this error when I try to push my SQLite3 to Postgresql (via Taps) on Cedar Stack?

    I've done quite a bit of research on Heroku Dev Center and I am now looking to the community for help. Here is my problem. I can not push my db to Heroku Cedar Stack. I am trying to migrate a sqlite database to postgresql via Taps gem. When I am ready to deploy I run: bundle install --without production heroku run db:push I get the following result: Running db:seed attached to terminal... up, run.17 sh: db:seed: not found heroku run rake db:migrate And when I run the migration: heroku run rake db:migrate I get the following: Running rake db:migrate attached to terminal... up, run.18 rake aborted! No Rakefile found (looking for: rakefile, Rakefile, rakefile.rb, Rakefile.rb) /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2367:in `raw_load_rakefile' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2007:in `block in load_rakefile' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2058:in `standard_exception_handling' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2006:in `load_rakefile' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:1991:in `run' /usr/local/bin/rake:31:in `<main>' Everytime I push to Heroku (git push heroku master) it fails because my gem file is attempting to install sqlite3 gem-even though its inside of the development and test groups in my Gemfile. My database.yml production environment still points to sqlite adapter even after I have run the following command successfully: heroku config:add BUNDLE_WITHOUT="test development" --app app_name_on_heroku Out of ideas. Please help. If its useful I can post results of my gemfile, heroku ps and logs. Cheers UPDATE: After following @John's direction I now receive the following terminal message.     Hello, I am running two processes,Process A is opened by Process B using the following example: createProcessHandle = CreateProcess( TEXT("C:\\Users\Jamie\\Documents\\Application\\Debug\\ProcessA.exe"), TEXT(""), NULL, NULL, FALSE, 0, NULL, NULL, &startupinfo, &process_information ); As you can see the Process is reliant on the path given to it, the problem I have is that if I change the location of my ProcessA.exe (Such as a backup/duplicate) it's a tiresome process to keep recoding the path. I want to be able to make it run no matter where it is without having to recode the path manually. Can anybody suggest a solution to this?

    I know it's possible to deploy earlier versions of the .NET framework using AD deployment, for example: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc160717.aspx. How do it do this for .NET 4? I tried unpacking the standalone .NET 4 installer and deploying the netfx_Extended_x86.msi package. This didn't work. After a reboot the event log shows that it tried but it failed to install with a message saying to run setup.exe.
