• linux log memory hogging issue

  Hi, We have a VPS server (it's using Virtuozzo). On a few occasions now, our VPS memory was fully used up and no new connections could be made to the server on SSH, SMTP, or POP. The only thing that works is connecting to the web service. Luckily, plesk is running on the VPS and we have been able to reboot it through plesk (as well as see that the RAM is 100% used). I would like to find what process is causing this. I have a feeling it's MySQL, but don't really know. Is there some sort of logging I could implement that would help me find out what was the cause of this next time it happens? Thanks.

• WPA2 and the linux wireless tools

  I would like to know a distribution independent way to connect to WPA2 wireless networks. Do the wireless tools support wpa2? iwconfig and such? Or is it necessary to use wpa_supplicant? Having to edit a config file every time if changing between many networks is quickly frustrating. I am aware of tools like wicd, but would like to know if there is a standard way to do this on all distributions without requiring third party software.

  I'm looking for VIM replacement. My key points are: Extensible in sane language (such as Python, Ruby, or even Lua, after vimscript everything will do). Also GUI part should be extensible too, so no SublimeText2. GUI. Preferrably GTK+. Lightweight. I don't understand IDEs like Eclipse/NetBeans consuming up to 1G of RAM. File browser panel. Splits, tabs and windows. There should be ability to split views tabs infinite number of times (or while they fit to screen). VCS support (optional: especially Git) Snippets & autocompletion (not mandatory, but I would very love to have those) Any ideas?

• Monitoring and terminating a hanged process in Linux

  Hi, I'm writing a script that runs many simultaneous processes that run the "dig" command. Once in a while (relatively rare, but happens in every run since I run dig many times) the dig command hangs with 0% CPU. Therefore, my script never terminates. I've created a monitor process for each dig command I run, which terminates it after a while, but I was wondering if there isn't a simpler and more efficient way to run a process with a pre-determined "expiration date", i.e. if the process runs more then X seconds it gets a signal that terminates it. • Linux Bluetooth [closed]

  Not sure if this is the proper forum; please forgive me if it's not... I have a Lenovo S10 'netbook' that I've installed Fedora 17 ("LXDE spin") on. So far pretty much everything works great, except, the on-board Bluetooth. lsusb shows the controller present (0a5c:2101 Broadcom Corp. Bluetooth Controller), hcitool dev shows hci0 present, but when I put my mouse ("Lenovo Bluetooth Laser Mouse," which works perfectly paired with a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini, and Lenovo SL500 (with a USB dongle; running Windows 7)) into pairing mode and run either hcitool scan (reports "Scanning ..." and, without further information or error message, returns to the shell prompt) or bluetooth-wizard (from the gnome-bluetooth package) and try to detect the mouse, I get nothing... Frustrating! Thanks anyone who can point me in the right direction!

  I'm working on an embedded system which is going to be booting and hosting it's rootfs on an SSD disk. We are currently looking at using Intel X-18M SSDs. The file system structure will have a fairly static /usr section (modulo software upgrades) and an active /var and /var/log for maintaining state and logging. Given the wear-levelling done by the underlying flash does having separate partitions help or hinder? As modern SSDs appear as straight block devices and hide their mapping magic behind their firmware is there any point trying to optimise the choice of file-system that sits on-top of the SSD? Finally does enable SMART monitoring make any sense in this context or are their SSD specific ways of determining the underlying health of the storage hardware?

  I have set my auditd rules to log when the system time is changed However, our servers are VMs and thus have problems with the time drifting out. We needed to solve this issue so we used a VMware tool to regularly synchronize the time. • Linux cron spamming me then stops about php/suhosin

  My server emails me when any messages goes to root. cron sends me messages. Today I got over 300 emails from my server all of which are PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php5/20090626+lfs/suhosin.so' - /usr/lib/php5/20090626+lfs/suhosin.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0 I have no idea why. I went to debug it however 5hours ago it stopped so theres nothing i could look at except maybe logs. Why did this maybe happen? Disk isn't full and I have enough ram available.

• Linux Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 - microphone issues

  I got a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000, the cam itself is working as it honors the UVC spec. This fancy WebCam has a integrated mic which worked some time before but now, it does no more. (Note: I use pulseaudio as it is a USB Mic and I am not really keen on the hassle of ALSA setup) Things I check already are if it gets detected at all: $ lsusb |grep Logi Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:0809 Logitech, Inc. Webcam Pro 9000 is muted in alsa-mixer - not the case, volume at 100 pavucontrol shows it too, but no input level bar! On top of that, if I open the gnome3 (fallback mode) audio panel(from the desktop panel), and disabel/reenable it in the hardware tab, it works "for some time"... Any hints? Any ideas? I am really out options for now, and the fact it worked like 6 months ago (perfectly) makes it no better.

• cpu load measure with hyperthreading on linux

  How can I get the true usage of a multicore hyperthreading enabled cpu? For example lets consider a 2 core CPU, expressing 4 virtual cores. A single threaded workload would now show up as 100% in top, as one core of the virtual cores is completely used. The CPU and top work as expected, like there would be 4 real cores. With two threads however, the things get arkward: If all works well, they are balanced to the two real cores, so we got 200% usage: Two times 100% and two idle virtual cores, and are using all of the available CPU power. Seems ok to me. However, if the two threads would run on a single real core, they would show up as using two times 100%, that makes 200% virtual core usage. But on the real side, that would be one core sharing its power on the two threads, which are then using only one half of the total CPU power. So the usage numbers shown by top can not be used to measure the total CPU workload. I also wonder how hyperthreading balances two virtual on a real core. If two threads take a different amount of cycles, would the virtual cores 'adapt' so that both show a 100% load even if the real load differ?

  I know that 777 is full read/write/execute permission for owner/group/other. So this doesn't seem to be needed as it leaves random users full permissions. What permissions are need to be used on /var/www so that... Source control like git or svn Normal users in a group like "websites" or added to "www-data" Servers like apache or lighthttpd And PHP/Perl/Ruby can all read, create, and run files there? If I'm correct, Ruby and PHP scripts are not "executed" directly - but passed to an interpreter. So there is no need for execute permission on files in /var/www. Therefore, it seems like the correct permission would be chmod -R 1660 which would make all files shareable by these four entities all files non-executable by mistake block everyone else from the directory entirely set the permission mode to "sticky" for all future files Is this correct? Update: I just realized that files and directories might need different permissions - I was talking about files above so i'm not sure what the directory permissions would need to be.

  I have few generic questions about firewalls and I thought the community up here could help me out. 1) So I recently installed Ubuntu server barebones. I checked for open ports, none were open which was great. Is that because there was a firewall installed or was it because there were no applications installed? 2) I installed some applications, (Apache, postgres,ssh, Java app and some few). Between these, I ended up opening a few ports (~10). Now I have a list of all the ports I would need open. So, how do I go about protecting them? [Is this the right question to ask? does the process go like this, Install Firewall - Allow Said needed ports - deny rest using IPtables rules] This is going to be open to the internet. Hosting low traffic ecommerce sites. 3) What do you think is the easiest way for me to quasi-secure the server, [low maintenance overhead/simplicity. Any open source "software" which can make my life easier?] 4) Finally, of the said open ports [2], I have 2 ports I need to close because they are telnet ports.   I am currently using xmodmap for remapping keys like Caps Lock on my keyboard. However, my keyboard has a bunch of keys on the top that are rarely used (Multimedia keyboard with buttons like Internet, Music, Next song, Mute etc) I want to remap these keys to specific commands (Not keys). For example: Pressing the Internet button should fire up my Firefox (/usr/bin/firefox)(which happens only in Windows for me) Also I need to map a specific button to xkill.   Hi all, My touchpad on my laptop appears to be no longer functioning. I typically use an external keyboard and mouse so I didn't notice the problem until I tried to use the touchpad. Even after toggling the on/off switch several times, the touchpad still doesn't work. In the logs, I see something about cannot read byte from synaptics device. What about with database applications such as Oracle, is it important to have a good amount of cached and buffers available for a database to run well with all the IO? • Drawbacks of installing linux on usb stick?

  I am setting up a router/nas/http/whatever server based on an ION mini-ITX board. I've installed Ubuntu Server on an old 160 GB drive, but it generates a lot more heat and vibrates more than my other new drive (storage). It just doesn't fit the concept, and worse: it takes up a SATA port. As SSD's are crazy expensive I'm thinking of buying an extra 4 GB USB stick, and raid0 it. From my point of view, these are the pros/cons: Pros Low power consumption No vibrations No heat Smaller Get to buy new, larger USB stick (:D) Cons Shorter life time Slower Raid 0 More work maintaing/installing? I think the pros overweighs the cons. Shorter life time and raid 0 is countered by regular backups of the configs/settings. Slower is partially countered by raid 0, and I don't know about the last one. What do You think? Experience? Another solution?

• Advanced Linux file permission question (ownership change during write operation)

  By default the umask is 0022: usera@cmp$ touch somefile; ls -l total 0 -rw-r--r-- 1 usera usera 0 2009-09-22 22:30 somefile The directory /home/shared/ is meant for shared files and should be owned by root and the shared group. Files created here by usern (any user) are automatically owned by the shared group. There is a cron-job taking care of changing owning user and owning group (of any moved files) once per day: usera@cmp$ cat /etc/cron.daily/sharedscript #!/bin/bash chown -R root:shared /home/shared/ chmod -R 770 /home/shared/ I was writing a really large file to the shared directory. It had me (usera) as owning user and the shared group as group owner. During the write operation the cron job was run, and I still had no problem completing the write process. You see. I thought this would happen: I am writing the file. The file permissions and ownership data for the file looks like this: -rw-r--r-- usera shared The cron job kicks in! The chown line is processed and now the file is owned by the root user and the shared group. As the owning group only has read access to the file I get a file write error! Boom! End of story. Why did the operation succeed? A link to some kind of reference documentation to back up the reason would be very welcome (as I could use it to study more details).
