• For what programs are Objective C and Ruby ideal on the Mac?

  Hi, as a Mac outsider it seems that two popular programming languages on the Mac appear to be Objective C and Ruby. From what I understand the main API Cocoa seems to be written in and optimized for Objective C, but it is also possible to use Ruby for that. Are there different areas where each language is ideal, for example, I could imagine Objective C could be ideal for a GUI layer, or standalone desktop app, and Ruby could be good for web services etc. What about classic business logic, or data access layers? What language would be a good choice for a library of services for example? Can we write a library in one language and link to it from a main program written in the other language? If I wanted to write a layered enterprise application using domain driven design and dependency injection which languages could support each concerns? Are things like DDD and DI common amongst Mac devs? Just a curious outsider.

• Decorators vs. classes in python web development.

  I've noticed three main ways Python web frameworks deal request handing: decorators, controller classes with methods for individual requests, and request classes with methods for GET/POST. I'm curious about the virtues of these three approaches. Are there major advantages or disadvantages to any of these approaches? To fix ideas, here are three examples. Bottle uses decorators: @route('/') def index(): return 'Hello World!' • How do I detect whether a browser supports mouseover events?

  Let's assume I have a web page which has some onmouseover javascript behaviour to drop down a menu (or something similar) Obviously, this isn't going to work on a touch device like the iPad or smartphones. How can I detect whether the browser supports hover events like onmouseover or onmouseout and the :hover pseudotag in CSS? Note: I know that if I'm concerned about this I should write it a different way, but I'm curious as to whether detection can be done. Edit: When I say, "supports hover events", I really mean, "does the browser have a meaningful representation of hover events". If the hardware supports it but the software doesn't (or vice versa), there's no meaningful representation. With the exception of some upcoming tech, I don't think any touch devices have a meaningful representation of a hover event.

• Recording audio from many source/microphones

  I'm curious if it's possible to record audio from many sources and if not, what's the limitation. Many current devices have two internal microphones (basically for noise reduction). On top of that it's possible to plug additional external one using audiojack. You can as well have another audio stream via bluetooth headset. You are allowed to specify AudioSource in android but is it possible to do recording from many sources at the same time? I'm also interested how the situation look like on the iOS devices.

• How practical to change MVC app from traditional authentication to cookieless?

  I have an application written in MVC that uses your regular .Net Forms Authentication. There's nothing particularly new or exciting going on with it. My client has now asked that users be able to log in to the app on the same machine but in different browsers, or different tabs within the same browser. To my mind, he's asking for a scope change to have authentication moved to cookieless instead of its current design. Not having had any experience with doing this in MVC, I'm curious to know before I get started how much hurt I'm in for by trying this. Are there better ways to do it? What should I consider? Any advice appreciated.

  I have just been watching the Stanford iPhone lecture online from Jan 2010 and I noticed that the guy from Apple keeps referring to getting an objects class name using "className" e.g. NSArray *myArray = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:@"ONE", @"TWO", nil]; NSLog(@"I am an %@ and have %d items", [myArray className], [myArray count]); However, I can't get this to work, the closest I can come up with it to use class, is className wrong, did it get removed, just curious? • Separating an Array into a comma seperated string with quotes

  I'm manually building an SQL query where I'm using an Array in the params hash for an SQL IN statement, like: ("WHERE my_field IN('blue','green','red')"). So I need to take the contents of the array and output them into a string where each element is single quoted and comma seperated (and with no ending comma). So if the array was: my_array = ['blue','green','red'] I'd need a string that looked like: "'blue','green','red'" I'm pretty new to Ruby/Rails but came up with something that worked: if !params[:colors].nil? @categories_array = params[:colors][:categories] @categories_string ="" for x in @categories_array @categories_string += "'" + x + "'," end @categories_string.chop! #remove the last comma end So, I'm good but curious as to what a proper and more consise way of doing this would look like?   I have checked out all these questions... Difference Class and Instance Methods Difference between class methods and instance methods? Objective-C: Class vs Instance Methods? ...and all they explain is how instance methods are used on instances of a class and class methods are used with the class name, when a message is sent to a class object. This is helpful, but I'm curious to know why one would use a class method vs. an instance method. I'm fairly new to iOS application development, and usually use class methods, and I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Thanks in advanced!

• ShGetFileInfo called for directory oddity

  Hello, I have a simple file browser and there I display files and folders, obtained by (for directory) SHFILEINFO info = new SHFILEINFO(); SHGetFileInfo(filename, FILE_ATTRIBUTE_DIRECTORY, ref info,Marshal.SizeOf(info), SHGFI_ICON | SHGFI_USEFILEATTRIBUTES | SHGFI_SMALLICON | SHGFI_ADDOVERLAYS); It works 100% fine, but I have noticed an oddity - if I try to obtain an icon for directory, but specify FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NORMAL instead of FILE_ATTRIBUTE_DIRECTORY but it does weird stuff for directories - normal folders have "unknown file type white paper" icons, recycle bin has VLC icon, etc. Directories under SVN have proper overlay, but base file icon (white sheet of paper). I understand that base icon for directory would now be the one of unknown file, but why do some folders have totally strange icon? Config.MSI has installer icon, recycle bin has VLC icon (wtf?!), etc. What does the shell function do with this parameters? Exactly what icon does it obtain? Again, this is not a problem, I'm just curious.

• asp:Validator in invisible elements + invisible targets

  Somewhat straightforward: will asp:Validators still perform validation when they're in invisible containers? How about if their ControlToValidate target is invisible? For example: <asp:Panel id="myPanel" runat="server" visible="false"> <asp:Textbox id="myTextbox" runat="server" /> <asp:RequiredFieldValidator id="myRfv" runat="server" controltovalidate="myTextbox" /> </asp:Panel> Above is a Validator in an invisible Panel. Would myRfv still perform validation? How about if myTextbox is invisible instead? I'm asking this because I have very specialized Validators in my ASPX, wherein I also have Panels which are hidden/shown dynamically. While I'm all for disabling the validators themselves, I'm just curious whether they'll automatically disable anyway. Thanks guys! :D

• Location of various javax.xml.* packages within the Java 6 SDK.

  Alright, so recently I was using Notepad++ for all of my programming needs, but I've started using Eclipse for larger-scale Java projects now. I decided to pick up an old project of mine which used various classes within the "javax.xml.*" namespaces. When I was compiling and running the program with Notepad++ it worked just fine, however Eclipse can't seem to find these packages. My question is this, since I obviously have the classes somewhere within my current installation of JDK 6 (since I had no problems when using Notepad++), where can I find the location of the .JAR file(s) that include these namespaces/classes so that I can add them to my Eclipse project? • OpenGL Performance Questions

  This subject, as with any optimisation problem, gets hit on a lot, but I just couldn't find what I (think) I want. A lot of tutorials, and even SO questions have similar tips; generally covering: Use GL face culling (the OpenGL function, not the scene logic) Only send 1 matrix to the GPU (projectionModelView combination), therefore decreasing the MVP calculations from per vertex to once per model (as it should be). Use interleaved Vertices Minimize as many GL calls as possible, batch where appropriate And possibly a few/many others. I am (for curiosity reasons) rendering 28 million triangles in my application using several vertex buffers. I have tried all the above techniques (to the best of my knowledge), and received almost no performance change. Whilst I am receiving around 40FPS in my implementation, which is by no means problematic, I am still curious as to where these optimisation 'tips' actually come into use? My CPU is idling around 20-50% during rendering, therefore I assume I am GPU bound for increasing performance. Note: I am looking into gDEBugger at the moment Cross posted at Game Development

• What's wrong with XOR encryption?

  I wrote a short C++ program to do XOR encryption on a file, which I may use for some personal files (if it gets cracked it's no big deal - I'm just protecting against casual viewers). Basically, I take an ASCII password and repeatedly XOR the password with the data in the file. Now I'm curious, though: if someone wanted to crack this, how would they go about it? Would it take a long time? Does it depend on the length of the password (i.e., what's the big-O)?

I'd consider this thread a big success if I could shed some light on these questions: Do engineers at big companies use substantially different hardware than engineers at start-ups companies? Does a fresh developer recruit at Google get substantially different hardware from someone in the same position at Microsoft or Yahoo!? Do programmers in more senior positions have more powerful hardware on their desks? Does anyone think faster hardware makes more efficient engineers?

• What performance indicators can I use to convince management that I need my development PC upgraded?

  At work, my PC is slow. I feel that I can be way more productive if I just wasn't waiting for Visual Studio and everything else to respond. My PC isn't bad (dual-core, 3GB of RAM), but there is a lot of corporate software and whatnot to slow everything down and sometimes lock it up. Now, some developers have begun getting Windows 7 machines with 8 GB of RAM. Of course, I start salivating at this. However, I was told that I "had to justify" why I should get a new machine. I can think of a lot of different things, but I am curious as to what every one else on SO would have to say. NOTE: Ideally, these reasons should be specifically related to .NET development in Visual Studio on a Windows machine. This isn't a "how can I make my machine faster" question.

  My interests in programming lie mainly in algorithms, and lately I have seen many reputable researchers write a lot of their code in python. How easy and convenient is python for scientific computing? Does it have a library of algorithms that compares to matlab's? Is Python a scripting language or does it compile? Is it a great language for prototyping an algorithm? How long would it take me to learn enough of it to be productive provided I know C well and OO programming somewhat? Is it OO based?   I'd be curious to understand if there's any substantial difference in specifying libraries (both shared and static) to gcc/g++ in the two following ways (CC can be g++ or gcc) CC -o output_executable /path/to/my/libstatic.a /path/to/my/libshared.so source1.cpp source2.cpp ... sourceN.cpp vs CC -o output_executable -L/path/to/my/libs -lstatic -lshared source1.cpp source2.cpp ... sourceN.cpp I can only see a major difference being that passing directly the fully-specified library name would make for a greater control in choosing static or dynamic versions, but I suspect there's something else going on that can have side effects on how the executable is built or will behave at runtime, am I right? Is that truly all I need to do to avoid SQL injections? Is it really that easy? You can assume MySQL if it makes a difference. Also, I'm really only curious about the use of prepared statements against SQL injection. In this context, I don't care about XSS or other possible vulnerabilities.

• Linux binary built for 2.0 kernel wouldn't execute on 2.6.x kernel.

  I was installing a binary Linux application on Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64. The app shipped with an old version of gzip (1.2.4), that was compiled for a much older kernel: $ file gzip gzip: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.0.0, stripped I wasn't able to execute this program. If I tried, this happened: $ ./gzip -bash: ./gzip: No such file or directory ldd was similarly unhappy with this binary: $ ldd gzip not a dynamic executable This isn't a showstopper for me, since my installation has a working version of gzip I can use. But I'm curious: What's the most likely source of this problem? A corrupted file? Or a binary incompatibility due to being built for a much older {kernel,libc,...}?

• What are the primary advantages of Visual Studio Team Foundation Server over the other versions?

  We are looking into the possibility of upgrading to Team Foundation Server 2008 for our development team. One of our primary reasons is some of the deployment capabilities surrounding BizTalk 2009, but I am curious what other benefits there are for other projects outside of BizTalk. Some of our interests so far are moving to a one click build and deploy process, the addition of unit tests, and continuous integration. Some definite steps forward for the company I work for. What other benefits or information should I look at as I pitch this to upper management? I am looking for technical reasons, money is a not really a concern for this discussion.

• Can NSUserDefaults be used for pausing the application during a phone call ?

  Friends, currently I dont have iphone to test and using Simulator for testing purposes. I am Just curious to know whether an application continues to run even after a phone call.. here i have no option to test this from simulator. If it terminates then how can i pause things.. and continue after a phone call. Is NSUserDefaults can be used for my case. As far I understood NSuserDefaults are used to store data that is required when the App is next time loaded. But here I dont want my App to terminate instead pause until Call ends and continue as uninterrupted later. Please clear me about this. • how do copyright permission systems for content hosting sites work?

  I am wondering about subscription sites that host content, like recorded performances from concerts. I'm sure there is a tangle of copyright permissions that must be granted for these video/audio files to be hosted. For example, if a band plays a cover of another band's song, permission must be obtained from not only the band that performed, but the band that owns the song. Perhaps even from the venue that hosted the performance, to record the video and post the content. I am curious how websites that host content like this work. How might an automated copyright system work to keep track of who has ownership of certain performances and obtain permission from said owners to record and post their content.

• SVG Using Adobe in IE doesn't work when loading page, but saving the page and then loading it works.

  So I'm trying to get a SVG document to load in IE. I can see it fine, but all calls to .getSVGDocument() fail, the svg onload="onload()" function never gets called and the right-click Adobe SVG Viewer context menu doesn't show up when right-clicking on the svg. It seems as though I'm managing to crash the adobe SVG viewer or something before it is able to call the onload function but after it has drawn the SVG document. As a test I saved the html page to my hard drive and loaded it up and walla - it works! Right-click, onload, and .getSVGDocument() all work. Very curious. For some reason getting the page from the server makes the adobe plugin crap out but loading up static HTML is fine. Any thoughts?
