  Background: On a new project I've found myself 3 levels removed from my actual source of information. I report to my PM, who reports to our contractor, who reports to the actual client. Getting answers to questions has become something of a problem and I'm curious to know what people recommend. Needs: I'm trying to find a technology or disciplined strategy that will assist me in ensuring that the questions I'm asking are getting answered: Correctly without much modification of the original question Quickly so the original context isn't lost Completely so that if a question is deferred I don't forget about it. Does anyone know of a software suite that assists in this matter or do you have any personal discipline strategies that worked for you? Thank you for the guidance

• How to use rvm (ruby version manager) with root account?

  The whole point of rvm is to be able to install multiple rubies and access them from a user account. What do you do when you need to access any of those rubies from root? Or use gems installed in one of those rvms? Is there an elegant (or even hackish) way to use these I haven't considered? My guess is that I should just add it to my PATH, but I'm curious if anyone has come up with a better idea. I'd rather not install rvm just for the root account and duplicate everything.

  Hello, The question Is it possible to ask SSIS to cast a value and return NULL in case the cast is not allowed instead of throwing an error ? My environment I'm using Visual Studio 2005 and Sql Server 2005 on Windows Server 2003. The general context Just in case you're curious, here is my use case. I have to store data coming from somewhere in a generic table (key/value structure with history) witch contains some sort of value that can be strings, numbers or dates. The structure is something like this : table Values { Id int, Date datetime, -- for history Key nvarchar(50) not null, Value nvarchar(50), DateValue datetime, NumberValue numeric(19,9) } I want to put the raw value in the Value column and try to put the same value in the DateValue column when i'm able to cast it to Datetime in the NumberValue column when i'm able to cast it to a number Those two typed columns would make all sort of aggregation and manipulation much easier and faster later. • Performing periodic audits and best practice

  I'm doing a windows form and would like an audit task to happen every 30 seconds. This audit is essentially checking a series of services on remote computers and reporting back into a richtextbox the status. Current I have this running in an endless background thread and using an invoker to update the richtextbox in the main form. Is this best practice? If I made an endless loop in my main form that would prevent any of my buttons from working, correct? I'm just curious if every time I want to create a periodic audit check I have to create a new thread which checks the status or file or what have you?

  Is there a HTTP status code to tell Google (and others) to go away, index me again later? Basically, one that semantically tells clients that the site is down for maintenance? The ones I have considered are 304 => Not modified 307 => Temporary redirect 410 => Gone 503 => Service Unavailable I'm leaning towards the last one, but was just curious as to which one was proper choice. • How do manage the limit of executions to be done by hour (Max: 1000 requests per hour) without a dat

  I am currently developing a script in PHP to fetch webpages. The fact is that by doing so, I occasionally do too much requests to a particular website. In order to control any overflow, I would like to keep trace of how many requests have been done in the last hour or so for each domain. It doesn't need to be perfect, just a good estimate. I doesn't have access to a database, except sqlite2. I would really like something really simple because there will typically be a lot of updates, which is kind of heavy for a sqlite database. If no one has a magical solution, I'll go for sqlite, but I was curious what you can come up with Thank you very much

• python open does not create file if it doesnt exist

  I am using Python. What is the best way to open a file in rw if it exists, or if it does not, then create it and open it in rw? From what i read, file = open('myfile.dat', 'rw') should do this, no? it is not working for me (python 2.6.2) and im wondering if it is a version problem, or not supposed to work like that or what. The bottom line is, i just need a solution for the problem. I am curious about the other stuff, but all i need is a nice way to do the opening part. thanks in advance

• databinding to self without code

  I'm building a UserControl in WPF. The control has two properties, Title and Description, that I'd like to bind to two textblocks. Seems real straightforward, and I got it working, but I'm curious about something. To get it to work I had to add this code: void CommandBlock_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { this.DataContext = this; } My bindings look like this: <TextBlock Text="{Binding Title}" Width="100" ... /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Description}" Width="100" ... /> What I'm wondering is how come I couldn't get it to work without the this.DataContext = this; and instead use DataContext="{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource Self}}" (in the UserControl element of the markup)? I'm sure I'm missing something about DataContexts but don't know what.

• Notepad++ like "multi editing" in VIM?

  I'm switching from Notepad++ to VIM as main text editor. Notepad++ can have multiple cursors by holding down ctrl and clicking anywhere in the text, so if you type, the text appears in multiple locations. Is it possible in vim? Something like insert after selecting multiple rows in visual mode, but with the possibility to have cursors anywhere in the text. It's a feature I rarely use, also it's quite easily avoidable, I'm just curious, since its the only one I could't find a replacement for in vim yet.

• Image as a background of a form in Delphi

  I'm using Delphi 2006. I have a few PNG images with transparencies and I have to create a GUI using them (top bar, left panel...). The images have different aligns properties. One of the images is the background of the form. The problem here is that I can't align it as alClient because it only occupies the rectangular zone that the other images have left, showing the naked canvas in their transparent zones. What I need is that the background image is put behind all the other images and taking all the canvas size. Is there anyway to do this? I know I can do this writting some logic in the OnResize event of the form but I was just curious if I was missing something. Thanks.

  We do maintenence on a number of systems. I'm finally in a place where I'm teh fucking boss for once, and have to design a large system that will have a long maintenance contract. There's a couple of tasks I find myself always repeating: 1) similar tasks for users with JS and those without 2) similar things for contents and rss/atom feeds, etc. To combat these I will need appropriate handling of assets (think JS files, CSS, themes/templates, etc.), excellent auth/user systems, javascript/ajax forethought, appropriate model setups. Codeigniter fails on many of these. Basically, with enough time I could build this system with Zend, but I'm curious what else is out there as Zend is also kind of a heavy-weight. We need something that is Rapid but maintainable, CodeIgniter is not maintainable. We will have a lot of AJAX APIs in place for the design team to play with. At first I thought jQuery was cool, but now I'm looking at Dojo.

• Started with a local git repo now I want to push my changes to a remote server

  Hi, I started a new project and created a local git repo with "git init" and now I have a few branches and everything works great. However since my webhosting company offers git hosting (if you're curious https://support.eapps.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=203) I'd like to push my entire repo to their servers to have a backup in the cloud in case something bad happens to my local repo.   I'm in the process of porting a Windows application to OS X (we wrote it in Java so most of the code is portable), but what I'm currently unsure of is how to add context menu items in the Finder window when the user right clicks on an item (i.e. I wish to add some items to the the menu that has "Open" "Open with" , "Get Info", etc... when the user right clicks). Most of the articles I've found deal specifically with Windows (I've searched for "context menus" and "shell extension", but I believe I may be searching the wrong terms), so I'm curious as to how to go about adding this in Mac or what literature I should be reading.

  My program frequently stops with a deadlock. When I do a break-all and look at the threads I see that three threads are stuck in our logging function: public class Logging { public static void WriteClientLog(LogLevel logLevel, string message) { #if DEBUG System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine(String.Format("{0} {1}", DateTime.Now.ToString("HH:mm:ss"), message)); //LOCK #endif //...Log4net logging } } If I let the program continue the threads are still stuck on that line. I can't see where this can lock. The debug class, string class & datetime class seem to be thread safe. The error goes away when I remove the "#if DEBUG System... #endif" code but I'm curious why this behavior happens. • C++ Types Impossible to Name

  While reading Wikipedia's page on decltype, I was curious about the statement, Its [decltype's] primary intended use is in generic programming, where it is often difficult, or even impossible, to name types that depend on template parameters. While I can understand the difficulty part of that statement, what is an example where there is a need to name a type that cannot be named under C++03? EDIT: My point is that since everything in C++ has a declaration of types. Why would there ever be a case where it is impossible to name a type? Furthermore, aren't trait classes designed to yield type informations? Could trait classes be an alternative to decltype?

• Image analysis on the iPhone

  Hi, guys! Hopefully a quick one. Working on a devious little algorithm that'll automatically scan a user's iPhone for a photo of some emotional poignance (e.g. go back in time a ways, look for one of a group of photos that are proximally timestamped, etc.). Need a quick-and-dirty way of picking out a photo containing two people in close proximity to each other. I know that the OpenCV Python lib [for image processing] works on the iPhone, I'm just curious whether it's actually the best way of doing this (from scratch or otherwise). Cheers!

I am using source control since several years for multiple projects using different systems (svn, hg, git) and I learned how to improve my messages by following guidelines etc. But as far as I can remember I never ever had a look at them afterwards. So ... how do you profit from your own commit messages? When I need to go back because I smashed something and need a fresh start, I usually just go back to the latest "node" (where I started or merged a branch). Do I write those messages just for people monitoring the project who are curious what is going on? Regards

  I am using a UITableView to display a list of cells, when the user selects a cell then a new view appears by using the following code: - (void) tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { [self.navigationController pushViewController: detailsViewController animated: TRUE]; } By using the code above, the view is displayed correctly, but when I return back to the root table view, then the cell is still selected. I noticed, in many sdk examples, that the cell is deselected (with a nice animation) when the root view is poped pack, but I could not find the code that implemented this feature in any of the examples. I know that I can use: [tableView deselectRowAtIndexPath:indexPath animated: YES]; to implement this, but I am very curious on how these examples do it without using any code. Any ideas?

  I have a Javascript question that I am curious about. When using: var test = document.links(arrayNum).name; Is it possible to dig deeper into specifying links? For instance, if there is just a group of links from within a div with an id that you would like to target as opposed to all the links on the page could you write something like: var test = document.getElementById('divId').links(arrayNum).name; Or could I add a class to the statement to target only the links associated with it? var test = document.links.className(arrayNum).name; Is anything like this feasible?

Firefox's profiler says I'm spending the most time in this function and I'm curious as to why that is. Is there a way to get the em size in javascript without doing all this work? I would like to recalculate the size on resize incase the user has changed it.
