• Killing Self-resurrecting Files

  Local computer: Dell desktop Windows XP Named "5" Server: Windows Server 2008 Named "W" Whenever I delete a file, log out, and log in, the file reappears. The files all supposedly live on the server (e.g. "\W\Home$\zchoy\Desktop") but even when the files are deleted from the server and the local computer, they come back. I've already tried resetting the offline files cache. I tried deleting a file and then synchronizing with the server. The file didn't come back. However, as mentioned earlier, the file comes back once I log out and log in.

• Ubuntu 9.1 Only Sees 244 MB RAM, while BIOS and Windows Sees 1.5 GB

  I have 1.5 GB of RAM installed on an older Dell, Pentium 4. I just installed Ubuntu 9.1 and the system is only seeing 244 MB of RAM, even though there is 1.5 GB on the system. The BIOS sees all of it. I ran a Knoppix disc and it only saw 25 MB upon booting. I made no particular changes to the installation taht would affect this. I looked through the BIOS and the only setting I could see was the AGP aperture. Not even sure what this is. Anyone know where I went wrong? I also tried moving the memory modules around on the board. Booted with the 1 GB stick, still saw 244 MB.

• Electricity in VAIO laptop ports while plugged in

  I have VAIO E series (SVE) laptop. While charger plugged in, touching VGA/HDMI/USB port metal casing gives me burning sensation. So, i checked it with voltmeter and i found that while plugged in there is presences of DC +1.0 V. Same case with my friend's VAIO E Series (VPCEH). Service center says this is normal. But i do not believe them as it is not the case with Dell Inspiron. Please let me know if you are facing same problem with VAIO and is it hazardous to devices which i connect to these ports (like HDD, LED, etc)?

• Why does my computer slow down so much when attaching Bluetooth dongle?

  I have a Bluetooth dongle and I plugged it into my work laptop (a Dell Latitude D830). Windows detects the Generic Bluetooth USB or similar and then proceeds to go incredibly slow with a process, avp.exe¹, taking 50% CPU. The System Idle process is getting most of the other 50% CPU and the avp.exe process is only at Normal priority. The machine doesn't seem to recover, so I had to turn the power off and reboot. Now, I haven't installed the drivers yet for the device, which I am doing now and I expect it to resolve the problem, so I am not asking how to fix this. I would rather know why Windows goes so slow in the first place. What is it trying to do and failing at so badly that it barely crawls? ¹ Part of Kaspersky Internet Security suite

  Hi there, I have a dual boot system on dell xps 9000 with windows 7 and ubuntu. But after I performed system backup on it as requested by windows 7 I am no longer able to boot into the computer, instead at the beginning after bios I get the following message: Grub loading. The symbol ' ' not found. Aborted. Press any key... I tried to change bios booting config to starting with harddrive and it still returned the same message. Using windows boot disk only asks me to do another system backup or threatens to delete my harddrive completely. The only solution I have so far is to reinstall ubuntu, but that leaves 2 additional copies of ubuntu on my computer. Is there a simpler way to fix the situation so I can actually boot into windows? • Computer not acknowledging sound card after move

  We just got our computer back from having moved and when I tried to hook our speaker system, the computer keeps telling me that I don't have a sound system installed. It's a Dell computer with the original surround/subwoofer system that it came with and was working fine before the move. I tried buying a new speaker system (Logitech) to see if it would work, but still saying I have no audio device installed and it's not showing up in my device manager. I opened up the computer and unplugged the sound card, then plugged it back in, still nothing. I put the install disc from the sound card in the cd-rom, but it's saying that I have no sound device hardware in my system.

  Good afternoon, Windows Server 2012 R2 as host fully up to date Windows Server 2012 R2 as guest fully up to date Whether I am running it as a host or guest, whenever I am installing an application that should take a couple minutes it always ends up 3x-5x longer than it should. If I take the same applications and install it on any other OS (IE 2k8, 7,) it they install very quickly. Dell server management software took 30 minutes or so when it takes 5 minutes or so on 2k8. Even a clean install not joined to domain I still experience this same slowness on applications I attempt to install. So my question to everyone is, are you or anyone else experiencing this? I cannot find anything on google so this is why I am here

• Cage nuts - which way to insert them?

  Cage nuts can be inserted (in square holes) either with the flaps horizontal or vertical. I've seen and used both methods, but am still not sure which is best. Is there a recommended way of inserting them? If so, why is it the best way? From my own experience, the horizontal way (on the left) seems slightly better for no other reason than making it easier to insert or pry out the cage nut in a full rack (with the units above and below being populated), for example when replacing cage nuts with a snap-in rail. • Radeon HD 5770 - DisplayPort Problem

  I am trying to set up 3 monitors with the Radeon HD 5770 I recieved a few days ago. I have read that I can use 2 DVI ports and an active DisplayPort adapter for a third DVI monitor. I have purchased this adapter: http://www.accellcables.com/products/DisplayPort/DP/dp_dvid.htm I have the two normal DVI monitors working, but when I try to extend the display to the third, I get a message saying the system has detected a problem with the connection through the display port which may limit resolution/refresh rate. I know that all the cables are fine, I have replaced the adapter, the monitors all work, I have tried different monitors through the adapter, and even nothing but the adapter, but I cannot get any monitor to work using it. I am trying to use 2 Dell monitors and an Acer. Have I overlooked something? Is there a compatibiliy issue I missed? Any suggestions as to what I could try? Thanks in advance.

  I'm running Linux mint 15 32 bit on a Dell inspiron 2200. I have given up trying to get the Broadcom BCM4318 built in wireless working, so bought a Dynamode Nano 802.11n wireless USB adapter. It came with an install disc. I have no idea how to install it. Could someone please point me in the right direction for full, idiot proof, step by step instructions. • Recommendations for a JetDirect print server for USB 2.0 printers?

  I have been using some older HP JetDirect 300x print servers for a variety of parallel printers over the years. These things work great for every printer I have tried them with, including HP's, Dell's, and even a Mountbatten braille embosser! These have been a boon for printers whose internal network cards fail, but whose parallel ports continue working. I don't have to throw away the $500 printer that is one year and a week old, and can keep using it for many, many years. Now that very few printers are coming with parallel ports, but are coming solely with USB connections and network cards. When the network card fails but the printer is still usable, I want to continue using it on the network with a JetDirect card. In summary: Does anyone have any recommendations for JetDirect cards that will work as well with USB 2.0 printers of unspecified manufacturer that my old JetDirect 300x cards do?

• Is computer's DRAM size not as important once we get a Solid State Drive?

  I am thinking of getting a Dell X11 netbook, and it can go up to 8GB of DRAM, together with a 256GB Solid State Drive. So in that case, it can handle quite a bit of Virtual PC running Linux, and Win XP, etc. But is the 8GB of RAM not so important any more. Won't 2GB or 4GB be quite good if a Solid State Hard drive is used? I think the most worried thing is that the memory is not enough and the less often used data is swapped to the pagefile on hard disk and it will become really slow, but with SDD drive, the problem is a lot less of a concerned? Is there a comparison as to, if DRAM speed is n, then SDD drive speed is how many n and hard disk speed is how many n just as a ball park comparison?

• Ubuntu 9.10 x64 has no sound, while Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit does.

  I installed Ubuntu 9.10 x64 recently. Up until now I've been on 32 bit Ubuntu. For the first time since installing it, I went and tried to play a Youtube video. There was no sound. So a quick test to the system reveals that nothing will play sound (And I've tried turning the volume too full, as some have said output is quite quiet, but there is no sound at all). Further research shows that in sound preferences, the only output device listed was Dummy Output. Why would it work in 9.04 x86 and not 9.10 x64? While booting up, and occasionally with the sound preferences dialog open, I get a loud click (even though it isn't recognising my sound card). It's a Dell Studio 17 laptop. I'm not sure what the exact model of sound card is.

• Windows 7 disc not recognized by DVD drive

  My machine is a recent model Systemax, less than 2 years old. It came with Vista 32bit and I bought Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for it. When I insert the Windows 7 DVD into the drive, it churns a little but does not recognize the disc. If I double click the DVD drive icon, it prompts me to insert a disc. I tried a different DVD (Office 2007) and the drive recognized the disc. I tried the Windows 7 disc in my Dell laptop and it recognized the disc. So basically, the disc is good and the drive is good, but they don't like each other. I tried to boot to the Windows 7 DVD and the system did not see it. I turned off the Lightscribe service and that didn't help. Does anybody have an idea what's wrong here? Thanks.

• Disk names in Solaris 10 for ZFS: SAS WWN instead of c0t0d0

  I currently have a server running Solaris 10u9 with a SAS enclosure (Dell PowerVault MD1000) filled with SATA disks attached to an SAS card (LSI 3801E). It happily recognizes the 15 disks in the MD1000 and presents them each disk in the traditional solaris form (c1t12d0, c1t13d0, c1t15d0, etc). My home ZFS setup (Nexenta CP3 + LSI 9200-16E + directly cabled SATA disks) presents disks as their SAS WWN ID (ex: c3t600039300001EA56d0). Although this ID is longer, I've found it much easier to troubleshoot because the cabling/slot is irrelevant, ZFS just identifies the disk by ID, if it's connected it finds it. Most manufacturers print the WWN right on the disk's top label, can't get much easier than that. So how can I get Solaris to identify disks by SAS WWN instead of by the cXtXdX?

• Lenovo Thinkpad SL500 and Keyboard Flex problem

  I was testing a Thinkpad SL500 system at a local store and found the flexing of the keyboard to be quite a deal breaker for me; it was flexing quite prominently with very little pressure applied. I find it hard to believe that a business grade laptop should have this problem as a consumer grade laptop that I own (Dell Inspiron 1526) has very little keyboard flex and one needs to apply a lot of pressure to notice it. Is this a common issue with the SL500 or SL510 models of Thinkpad laptops? What about the Thinkpad R500, does this also suffer from similar issues?

  On my laptop doesn't work any camera. I get error: "Camera being used by another application"". I don`t known which program using it. I tried use software like "SplitCam" or "ManyCam". Also I reinstalled K-lite codec to newest, but still getting this error. I get the same error when I turn my Canon video camera to laptop using firewire cable. • Where can I find a list of the highest resolution monitors for sale?

  I am always on the lookout for the latest and greatest monitors, but for some reason, I have never found a good resource for this information. And while we know months in advance what new processor will be released, it doesn't seem like we ever know what new monitors will be released until they are. I am tempted to buy a Dell 3008WFP, but since the 30" 2560x1600 monitors have been out for 6 years, I would expect something better is about to be released. Where can I find out what is available in the high resolution / widescreen market and what is soon to be released? • Windows 7 starter will not shutdown or logoff

  Hi all, Im having some problems with a friends netbook (a dell mini 10). It will not shutdown or logoff via the usual route. Whenever the shutdown/logoff button is clicked, it will briefly freeze (maybe for only a second) and then do nothing. Ive tried shutting down manually via the command line using shutdown /p but all to no avail, it just defaults back to flashing cursor in the command prompt. There doesnt seem to be any mention of a similar problem on google so i was wondering if anyone else had any ideas. Thanks oh and its runnning windows 7 starter.

• LAN access via USB from Ipod Touch?

  I need to browse the local web server from my Ipod Touch to test apps we're developing. I'm not allowed to install a separate wireless access point which would be the easiest solution. Can I use the USB cable for this? Also, the local PC is a Dell Mini 9 running Ubuntu. Has anyone managed to use the wireless port to create an ad hoc connection to an Ipod Touch so the Ipod can browse the Ubuntu web server? This would be an alternate option for me. Thank you!

• Is there a way to get a larger desktop than the screen?

  Is there any freeware out there that will allow me to run the desktop that is larger than the resolution of the screen? My situation: Win XP, Dell Mini 10, iirc- Intel GMA950 I need to use a netbook for one specific web site (with firefox) that doesn't render properly if the screen isn't at least 1024x768. It is a netbook, so the res is 1024x600. Is there anything out there that will allow me to use a 1024x768 desktop on this smaller screen WITHOUT shrinking the desktop to fit. I want to pan around. • HD latency measurement using bonnie++ on different machines with different RAM size

  Hello, I have run bonnie++ v1.96 on two different servers without any additional load. One server is a "physical" Dell server with 32GB RAM, the other one is a virtual instance with 14GB RAM. I have read in the bonnie manuals that I should use two times the size of RAM in my bonnie runs, so I used 64GB on the physical machine and 28GB on the virtual machine. Now I want to compare the results, and I am wondering whether the results are comparable at all. The most interesting part is the latency part - on the physical machine, the values are about 10 times higher than on the virtual machine! Can I take these results seriously (e.g. the virtual machine HD is much much faster) or does the different RAM size tamper the results? Thanks! Jonas

• Mouse Icon Distorted on Secondary Display

  I have a strange issue with a dual monitor, extended desktop setup where the mouse is always fine on the primary monitor, but sometimes when I move to the secondary display the icon becomes garbled and distorted (sometimes it just looks like a vertical line, instead of a pointer). If I move the mouse back and forth rapidly between primary and secondary displays the level of "garbledness" of the icon will change and sometimes go away completely. If I switch the display settings and set it to "Duplicate Monitor 1" then I end up with a garbled icon on the primary display and an accurate one on the secondary. Very annoying. Computer is Windows 7 Ultimate with an HD8750 and the newest video drivers. Monitors are two Dell 24" displays connected via DVI cables. I have also tried VGA cables.

• LAN speeds and firewall/switch connections

  I have a small network with about ten users. All workstations flow into a Dell PowerConnect 3424 which then has a single link to a SonicWALL firewall and from there to a cable modem. More important than internet connectivity is speed between machines (specifically a Windows Server box on the LAN which everyone uses simultaneously). I believe the 3424 has gigabit connections, but they look like they're for stacking. Is there a way to test the speeds on the LAN to see where the speeds are at? Is there any low-hanging fruit insofar as increasing speeds?
