• fail2ban iptable rule wont block

  So I set up fail2ban on my Debian 7 server, still I've been getting hit a lot and I dont know why is not blocking properly. The regex works, it recognizes the attempts but it seems the iptables rules it insert wont work, this is how it look iptables ouput looks after fail2ban tries to block. • RAID-capable 3.5" SATA Drives

  I recently purchased a pair of 1TB Western Digital WD1002FBYS RE3 drives for use in an external RAID enclosure. I have found that they tend to drop out of the array after a while. Thinking it was the enclosure I tried them on another one but found the same issue. So a bit of googling and I found http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/251076-32-raid-issues-western-digital-hard-disk which suggests that: "WD's "RE" (RAID Edition) HDDs support Time-Limited Error Recovery ("TLER" ): http://www.wdc.com/en/products/productcatalog.asp?language=en As a non-TLER HDD fills up with data, the error detection firmware might take too long, and the RAID controller may drop that HDD from a RAID array." So now I wonder what SATA drives have firmware which is compatible with RAID arrays (esp. RAID 1, 5, but not 0)? I have not been able to come up with the magic set of keywords to ellicit the answer from Google. However, various sites suggest that Seagate & Hitachi are in general OK. Does anyone have any generic (or even specific) guidance on how to work out if a drive's firmware may harbour code that is potentially an issue in a RAID0 setting other than stating that it must be 'enterprise' ready?

• Router intermittently failing

  My old Asus router died a few weeks ago, so I thought I'd set up my Debian box to deal with routing my home network. I have a few complications, but I adapted my configuration from a previously working configuration, and I don't see why I am having intermittent problems. But I am having them! Every so often, my SSH connections to the router (and to the Xen virtual machines hosted by the router) just drop. I am unable to use the router's dns server. I can't ping the router. Etc. All of these things work most of the time, but break down intermittently, for a few minutes at a time. (I can provide more details, but I'm not sure what will be helpful) /etc/network/interfaces: # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback # Gigabit ethernet, internal network auto eth0 allow-hotplug eth0 iface eth0 inet manual # USB ethernet, internet auto eth1 allow-hotplug eth1 iface eth1 inet dhcp # Xen Bridge auto xlan0 iface xlan0 inet static bridge_ports eth0 address 10.47.94.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 As I understand it, this is sufficient to create the network interfaces, and even do some switching between Xen hosts and my eth0 interface. It took about 30 seconds to return, though.

• Can SQL Server (2008) transaction logs handle the database being dropped and re-created?

  We're trying to restore a database (created programatically by running a hand-crafted SQL script we have). Our backup routine is to create a full backup of every database on the SQL Server 2008 instance on a Saturday then automatic transaction logs (I assume these are created automatically anyway - we appear to have lots of log files, possibly one per transaction after the full backup was taken?). On Tuesday this week the database in question was dropped and another one with the exact same name and schema was created. SQL Server has continued to create transaction log files but it hasn't had chance to create a new full backup (that won't happen until next Saturday). Now as it turns out we need to restore the database to how it was on Thursday. This is after the "drop and re-create". My question is, is this possible? If it isn't, what exactly does SQL Server think that it's writing to those transaction logs created since the drop and re-create? (I understood they were kind of files containing a binary delta, which makes me think maybe we can restore from them?) I'm no DBA but then neither is our IT department, so I'm doing the best I can to resolve this. Any advice much appreciated!

• mysqldump --where with = operator doesn't get all rows = - Help!

  I have a situation with a particular table that now thinks it contains 4 Petabytes of data. I know that sounds cool, but I assure you, it is only on a 60GB partition. This table has 9 fields in it. One of them is a domain_id field. It is the best field to identify the rows by, as there are only approximately 6300 of them. The only other field option to match has over 2million records, and thats just more difficult. I cannot do a straight mysqldump because it will attempt to output all 4PB of data and fill the drive long before it gets close to that, so I need to surgically remove the good stuff, destroy the db, and recreate it. I believe if I can do a dump for each domain_id record, then I will get most of the usable data out of it. This is what I am trying to use: mysqldump -u root --skip-opt -q --no-create-info --skip-add-drop-table --max_allowed_packet=1000000000 database table --where="domain_id=10" domains10.sql Using this I expect every row with the domain_id 10 to be exported. However, when I check the export, I am only getting 1 row, when however I look at the db, there are many many rows. It is as though the operator just finds one, then gives up. I have tried various operators. Using the < or I am able to get more of the data, but the export stops short at certain rows where the data has been compromised. With over 6000 to go through, I can't narrow down which rows are being affected in the export easily enough. So, what I need is an operator that will basically do what I thought = would do, simply give me an export of all records that match the specific field. Also note, the only way I got this DB even accessible is through an innodb force recovery 3. So I need to get this right, because after this is done, I have to drop the db in order to make mysql functional again. Looking forward to any helpful answers.

• Uploads fail with shorewall enabled

  I have an Ubuntu 8.04 server with shorewall 4.0.6 installed. When I try to upload files using FTP, SCP, or cURL the file upload stalls almost immediatly and eventually times out. If I turn off shorewall then the uploads work fine. I don't have any rules that specifically allow FTP and I'm not too concerned with it, but I do need to be able to upload via 22 (SCP) and 80 & 443 (cURL). This is what my rules look like: COMMENT Allow Server to respond to any web (80) and SSL (443) requests ACCEPT net $FW tcp 80 ACCEPT $FW net tcp 80 ACCEPT net $FW tcp 443 ACCEPT $FW net tcp 443 COMMENT Allow Server to respond to SNMPD (161) requests ACCEPT net $FW udp 161 COMMENT Allow Server to respond to MySQL (3306) requests (for MySQL Graphing) ACCEPT net $FW tcp 3306 COMMENT Allow Server to respond to any SSH connection attempts, and to SSH out. SSH/ACCEPT net $FW SSH/ACCEPT $FW net COMMENT Allow Server to make DNS Requests out. DNS/ACCEPT $FW net COMMENT Default "close" anything else. • Selecting whole column except first X (header) cells in Excel

  I know I can select all cells in a particular column by clicking on column header descriptor (ie. A or AB). But is it possible to then exclude a few cells out of it, like my data table headings? Example I would like to select data cells of a particular column to set Data Validation (that would eventually display a drop down of list values defined in a named range). But I don't want my data header cells to be included in this selection (so they won't have these drop downs displayed nor will they be validated). What if I later decide to change validation settings of these cells? How can I selection my column then? A sidenote I know I can set data validation on the whole column and then select only those cells that I want to exclude and clear their data validation. What I would like to know is is ti possible to do the correct selection in the first step to avoid this second one. I tried clicking on the column descriptor to select the whole column and then CTRL-click those cells I don't want to include in my selection, but it didn't work as expected.

• Expanding raidz vdev

  I'm currently planning on installing FreeBSD 9 on my home server. The machine has 4x 1.5TB disks, and at some point, when HDD prices drop I'll be upgrading to something bigger, perhaps 3TB. The disks are connected to an IBM ServerRaid m1015 in IT mode, this card has room for up to eight disks. Now here is the problem, currently the 4x 1.5TB will be connected to the m1015. Then when prices drop I'll be adding something like 4x 3TB, also connected to the m1015. No problem yet, I can just run 2 raidz2 vdevs and put them in the same pool. But, at some point the 1.5TBs will start to break, or I will have to upgrade them when the pool runs out of space. So I started researching if it's possible to expand a raidz vdev, and I found several pages explaining the same procedure, like this on SF: How to upgrade a ZFS RAID-Z array to larger disks on OpenSolaris?. So I went a head and tried that in vmware, I installed FreeBSD 9 and created 6 virtual disks, 3 of 1GB each and 3 of 10GB each. After building a raidz vdev of the 1GBs I replaced them one by one with the 10GB, but the pool did not increase in size. Is this a limitation of the ZFS implementation in FreeBSD? Or am I just doing something wrong?

• Expire Files In A Folder: Delete Files After x Days

  I'm looking to make a "Drop Folder" in a windows shared drive that is accessible to everyone. I'd like files to be deleted automagically if they sit in the folder for more than X days. However, it seems like all methods I've found to do this, use the last modified date, last access time, or creation date of a file. I'm trying to make this a folder that a user can drop files in to share with somebody. If someone copies or moves files into here, I'd like the clock to start ticking at this point. However, the last modified date and creation date of a file will not be updated unless someone actually modifies the file. The last access time is updated too frequently... it seems that just opening a directory in windows explorer will update the last access time. Anyone know of a solution to this? I'm thinking that cataloging the hash of files on a daily basis and then expiring files based on hashes older than a certain date might be a solution.... but taking hashes of files can be time consuming. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Note: I've already looked at quite a lot of answers on here... looked into File Server Resource Monitor, powershell scripts, batch scripts, etc. They still use the last access time, last modified time or creation time... which, as described, do not fit the above needs.

• SQL Server 2012 memory usage steadily growing

  I am very worried about the SQL Server 2012 Express instance on which my database is running: the SQL Server process memory usage is growing steadily (1.5GB after only 2 days working). The database is made of seven tables, each having a bigint primary key (Identity) and at least one non-unique index with some included columns to serve the majority of incoming queries. An external application is calling via Microsoft OLE DB some stored procedures, each of which do some calculations using intermediate temporary tables and/or table variables and finally do an upsert (UPDATE....IF @@ROWCOUNT=0 INSERT.....) - I never DROP those temporary tables explicitly: the frequency of those calls is about 100 calls every 5 seconds (I saw that the DLL used by the external application open a connection to SQL Server, do the call and then close the connection for each and every call). The database files are organized in only one filgegroup, recovery type is set to simple. Some questions to diagnose the problem: is that steadily growing memory normal? did I do any mistake in database design which probably lead to this behaviour? (no explicit temp-table drop, filegroup organization, etc) can SQL Server manage such a stored procedure call rate (100 calls every 5 seconds, i.e. 100 upsert every 5 seconds, beyond intermediate calculations)? do the continuous "open connection/do sp call/close connection" pattern disturb SQL Server? is it possible to diagnose what is causing such a memory usage? Perhaps queues of wating requests? (I ran sp_who2, but I didn't see a big amount of orphan connections from the external application) if I restrict the amount of memory which SQL Server is allowed to use, may I sooner or later get into trouble?

• Creating MS Word 2010 Relative Links?

  Okay here is what I've tried so far for creating relative links in my MS Word Documents. In my document from the ribbon I select the File tab. I then select Info from the side bar. Click the properties drop down from the right hand column. (a bit difficult to find initially, since it looks like text not a drop down, but it's there). Click Advanced Properties The <document-name>.docx Properties Dialog Appears I enter .\ to specify that I want a relative path for the links in my document. I click OK. I go back into my document select some text and attempt to make a link out of it clicking the Insert tab of the ribbon, and then clicking Hyperlink. I then select a document from the current folder, and strip the full path from it, leaving just the name of the .docx file to which I wish to link. Then I click OK. The link appears, I try to click it using Ctrl+Click. I am informed that the address of the site is not valid. Check the address and try again. What could I possibly be doing wrong here? I just want a relative link. It's so easy in to do this in HTML.

• Detecting HTML5/CSS3 Features using Modernizr

  HTML5, CSS3, and related technologies such as canvas and web sockets bring a lot of useful new features to the table that can take Web applications to the next level. These new technologies allow applications to be built using only HTML, CSS, and JavaScript allowing them to be viewed on a variety of form factors including tablets and phones. Although HTML5 features offer a lot of promise, it’s not realistic to develop applications using the latest technologies without worrying about supporting older browsers in the process. If history has taught us anything it’s that old browsers stick around for years and years which means developers have to deal with backward compatibility issues. This is especially true when deploying applications to the Internet that target the general public. This begs the question, “How do you move forward with HTML5 and CSS3 technologies while gracefully handling unsupported features in older browsers?” Although you can write code by hand to detect different HTML5 and CSS3 features, it’s not always straightforward. If the browser doesn’t support box shadows then the no-boxshadow class will be added to the <html> element and it can be used to render a standard border around the div. This provides a great way to leverage new CSS3 features in supported browsers while providing a graceful fallback for older browsers. In addition to using the CSS classes that Modernizr provides on the <html> element, you also use a global Modernizr object that’s created. This object exposes different properties that can be used to detect the availability of specific HTML5 or CSS3 features. For example, the following code can be used to detect canvas and local storage support. You can see that the code is much simpler than the code shown at the beginning of this post. A Curl animation is animation of pages flipping, including the page above rolling and the shadows over the lower page. What is the recommended way to do a "gallery" that displays two pages at a time (just like a book)? Is it: Letting the adapter display a linear layout of two images at a time? (it won't let me show a page flipping over the other like a book) Using two pages, placing somehow one near the other, and then when it's time to animate -move the next two pages over?   So I have Image like this I want to get something like this (I hevent drawn all lines I want but I hope you can get my idea) I need algorithm for finding all straight lines on it by just reading colors of pixels. No hard math, no Haar, no Hough. Some algorithm which would be based on points colors. I want to give to algorithm parameters like min line length and max line distortion. I want to get relative to picture pixel coords start and end points of lines. So I need algorithm for finding straight lines of different colors on picture. Algorithm which would be based on idea of image of different colors and Lines of static colors. Yes - such algorithm will not work for images with lots of shadows and lights. But It willl probably be fast (I hope so). Is there any such algorithm?

Below is my firewall rules on the gateway server that is running the dhcp server accessing the net. The webserver is inside my network on a static IP (192.168.0.98, default port). When I use Nmap or GRC.com I see that port 80 is open on the gateway server but when I browse to it, (via public URL. http://www.houseofhawkins.com) it always fails with a connection error, (nmap cannot connect and figure out what the web server is either). I can nmap the webserver and browse to it just fine via same IP inside my network. I believe it is my IPTable rules that are not letting it through. Internally I can route all my requests. Each machine can browse to the website and traffic works just fine. I can MSTSC / ssh to all the webservers internally and they inturn can connect to the web. The network looked something like this: I have now replaced the sky modem with a dlink modem which gives the IP to the gateway server that now does the DHCP. It looks like: The internet connection is a standard broadband connection with a dynamic IP, (use zoneedit.com to keep it updated). I have tried it on each of the webservers(one Ubuntu Apache server and one WS2008 IIS7). I think there must also be an issue with my IPTable rules as it can route to my win7 box which has the default IIS7 page and that would not display when I forwarded all port 80 to it.   I'm running a KVM instance inside of OpenStack, and it isn't getting an IP address from the DHCP server.   So, I've built this navigation bar so far and I'm curious if it's even possible to achieve what I'm thinking. Currently, when you hover over each of the links they drop down (padding is increased). Now, what I'm curious in doing is if you hover over say "test1", test2-4 also drop with it but in the padding that has been created from the drop down, "test1" information shows up. Allowing the user to click or read whatever information is in there. Also, if the user would like to, they can move their mouse to test2 and everything would animate (opacity, this I can do I think) to whatever is in the test2 field, test3 doing the same and so on. I haven't had much success with this, I've created a completely separate panel before, but that didn't exactly work or I wasn't doing it correctly. • Custom draw button using uxtheme.dll

  I have implemented my custom button inheriting from CButton and drawing it by using uxtheme.dll (DrawThemeBackground with BP_PUSHBUTTON). Everything works fine but I have two statuses (Normal and Pressed) which Hot status is the same. It means when the user places the cursor over the button it is drawn alike regardless the button status (Pressed or not). This is a bit confusing to the user and I would like to change the way the button is drawn in Pressed & Hot status. Does anybody know a way? I have also thought about custumizing the whole drawing but the buttons use gradients, borders, shadows, etc. So it is not easy to achive the same look&feel drawing everything by myself. Is there a way to find the source code of the dll or know how to do it? Thanks in advance. Javier

I'd also like to limit the choices in the second two drop-downs to those runs and pnumbers which are available for the currently selected product group (I can update them via AJAX if the user changes the product group, but it's important that the initial page load as described without relying on AJAX). What's the best way to do this? As a point of departure, here's what I've tried/considered so far: My first approach was to exclude the item foreign key field from the form, add the substitute dropdowns by overriding the add_fields method of the formset, and then extract the data and populate the fields manually on the model instances before saving them. It's straightforward and pretty simple, but it's not very reusable and I don't think it is the right way to do this. My second approach was to create a new field which inherits both MultiValueField and ModelChoiceField, and a corresponding MultiWidget subclass. This seems like the right approach. As Malcolm Tredinnick put it in a django-users discussion, "the 'smarts' of a field lie in the Field class." The problem I'm having is when/where to fetch the lists of choices from the db. The code I have now does it in the Field's __init__, but that means I have to know which ProductGroup I'm dealing with before I can even define the Form class, since I have to instantiate the Field when I define the form. So I have a factory function which I call at the last minute from my view--after I know what CatalogItems I have and which product group they're in--to create form/formset classes and instantiate them. It works, but I wonder if there's a better way. After all, the field should be able to determine the correct choices much later on, once it knows its current value. Another problem is that my implementation limits the entire formset to transactions relating to (CatalogItems from) a single ProductGroup. A third possibility I'm entertaining is to put it all in the Widget class. Once I have the related model instance, or the cid, or whatever the widget is given, I can get the ProductGroup and construct the drop-downs. This would solve the issues with my second approach, but doesn't seem like the right approach.

  What is the equivalent of Quartz Window Services for Windows and X11? I want to be able to capture individual windows with their decorations, shadows, etc., completely independent from each other. Basically what the Son of Grab example is able to do. http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/samplecode/SonOfGrab/Introduction/Intro.html Also it seems like it's not possible to capture non-top-level windows with QWS in Mac. For example I want to be able to capture a Java or Flash applet running inside Firefox. What other library would I need to use instead?
