• Smartassembly 5: it lives! Early Access builds now available

  I'm pleased to announce that, late last week, we put out the first early access build for Smartassembly 5, Red Gate's fantastic code protection and error reporting tool, which we acquired last September. You can download it via: http://www.red-gate.com/messageboard/viewforum.php?f=116 It's obviously pretty early days, so please do not try to use this to protect a production application, but we've already done a lot of work in some key areas: We're simplifying and streamlining the licensing model (you won't see this yet, but a lot of the work on this has already been done). We've improved usability of the product, with a better menu, reordering of project settings, and better defaults. We've also fixed a load of bugs, which I'll let Alex blog about in more detail. On a slightly more trivial level, the curly braces are also no more. Over the coming weeks, we'll be adding more improvements, and starting usability tests. • Windows in StreamInsight: Hopping vs. Snapshot

  Three weeks ago, we explained the basic concept of windows in StreamInsight: defining sets of events that serve as arguments for set-based operations, like aggregations. Today, we want to discuss the so-called Hopping Windows and compare them with Snapshot Windows. We will compare these two, because they can serve similar purposes with different behaviors; we will discuss the remaining window type, Count Windows, another time. Hopping (and its syntactic-sugar-sister Tumbling) windows are probably the most straightforward windowing concept in StreamInsight. A hopping window is defined by its length, and the offset from one window to the next. They are aligned with some absolute point on the timeline (which can also be given as a parameter to the window) and create sets of events. The diagram below shows an example of a hopping window with length of 1h and hop size (the offset) of 15 minutes, hence creating overlapping windows:   Two aspects in this diagram are important: Since this window is overlapping, an event can fall into more than one windows. If an (interval) event spans a window boundary, its lifetime will be clipped to the window, before it is passed to the set-based operation. That’s the default and currently only available window input policy. (This should only concern you if you are using a time-sensitive user-defined aggregate or operator.) The set-based operation will be applied to each of these sets, yielding a result. This result is: A single scalar value in case of built-in or user-defined aggregates. A subset of the input payloads, in case of the TopK operator. Arbitrary events, when using a user-defined operator. The timestamps of the result are almost always the ones of the windows. Only the user-defined  operator can create new events with timestamps. (However, even these event lifetimes are subject to the window’s output policy, which is currently always to clip to the window end.) Let’s assume we were calculating the sum over some payload field: var result = from window in source.HoppingWindow( TimeSpan.FromHours(1), TimeSpan.FromMinutes(15), HoppingWindowOutputPolicy.ClipToWindowEnd) select new { avg = window.Avg(e => e.Value) }; Now each window is reflected by one result event:   As you can see, the window definition defines the output frequency. No matter how many or few events we got from the input, this hopping window will produce one result every 15 minutes – except for those windows that do not contain any events at all, because StreamInsight window operations are empty-preserving (more about that another time). The “forced” output for every window can become a performance issue if you have a real-time query with many events in a wide group & apply – let me explain: imagine you have a lot of events that you group by and then aggregate within each group – classical streaming pattern. The hopping window produces a result in each group at exactly the same point in time for all groups, since the window boundaries are aligned with the timeline, not with the event timestamps. This means that the query output will become very bursty, delivering the results of all the groups at the same point in time. This becomes especially obvious if the events are long-lasting, spanning multiple windows each, so that the produced result events do not change their value very often. In such a case, a snapshot window can remedy. Snapshot windows are more difficult to explain than hopping windows: they represent those periods in time, when no event changes occur. In other words, if you mark all event start and and times on your timeline, then you are looking at all snapshot window boundaries:   If your events are never overlapping, the snapshot window will not make much sense. It is commonly used together with timestamp modification, which make it a very powerful tool. Or as Allan Mitchell expressed in in a recent tweet: “I used to look at SnapshotWindow() with disdain. Now she is my mistress, the one I turn to in times of trouble and need”. Let’s look at a simple example: I want to compute the average of some value in my events over the last minute. I don’t want this output be produced at fixed intervals, but at soon as it changes (that’s the true event-driven spirit!). The snapshot window will include all currently active event at each point in time, hence we need to extend our original events’ lifetimes into the future: Applying the Snapshot window on these events, it will appear to be “looking back into the past”: If you look at the result produced in this diagram, you can easily prove that, at each point in time, the current event value represents the average of all original input event within the last minute. Here is the LINQ representation of that query, applying the lifetime extension before the snapshot window: var result = from window in source .AlterEventDuration(e => TimeSpan.FromMinutes(1)) .SnapshotWindow(SnapshotWindowOutputPolicy.Clip) select new { avg = window.Avg(e => e.Value) }; With more complex modifications of the event lifetimes you can achieve many more query patterns. For instance “running totals” by keeping the event start times, but snapping their end times to some fixed time, like the end of the day. • Pixel alignment algorithm

  I have a set of square blocks, I want to draw them in a window. I am sure the coordinates calculation is correct. But on the screen, some squares' edge overlap with other, some are not. I remember the problem is caused by accuracy of pixels. I remember there's a specific topic related to this kind of problem in 2D image rendering. But I don't remember what exactly it is, and how to solve it. Look at this screenshot. Each block should have a fixed width margin. But in the image, the vertical white line have different width.Though, the horizontal lines looks fine.

  I am working in sprint. At the end of sprint I need to send a defect report per sprint. Considering the below scenario please let me know your views. Two teams(A & B) are working at different locations in Sprint-2 and I am a tester from Team-A and report the defects for the items developed by Team-A in each sprint Question 1. I reported few defects in Sprint-2 for the functionality developed by Team-B in previous sprint. Do I have to consider this as observation or defect and report to Team-A? 2. I reported 5 defects of Sprint-2 for the functionality developed by team-A. All the defects are fixed and closed by me in the same sprint. Before the end of sprint I observed 2 defects got reopened for some reason. Now the defect count should be 5 or 7(5+2) should be considered for this sprint? Thanks Khan

  So, i am currently writing something up for a college class. Problem is everything is hypothetical. I need some proof. I believe a first impression on a website is imperative so that people actually use it and in my case, buy your product or services as well. Basically I'm wondering has there been any studies that shows how a better web design will increase revenue for any kind of services? I don't just mean selling products like a T-shirt, but labor services as well. If someone wanted their computer fixed and searched for companies that can do so, will a first impression on the website help them make their decision to use your company? Are there any studies like this? White papers maybe? Thanks!

  This draws a white vertical line from 640 to 768 at x512: glDisable(GL_TEXTURE_2D); glBegin(GL_LINES); glColor3f((double)R/255,(double)G/255,(double)B/255); glVertex3f(SX, -SPosY, 0); // origin of the line glVertex3f(SX, -EPosY, 0); // ending point of the line glEnd(); glEnable(GL_TEXTURE_2D); This works, but after having a problem where it wouldn't draw it white (Or to any colour passed) I discovered that disabling GL_TEXTURE_2D Before drawing the line, and the re-enabling it afterwards for other things, fixed it. I want to know, is this a normal step a programmer might take? Or is it highly inefficient? I don't want to be causing any slow downs due to a mistake =) Thanks

• Multiple problems using BOINC in Ubuntu 12.04

  I installed Berkeley's BOINC software in Windows and I loved it, however I'm having the following problems using it in Ubuntu 12.04: 1) The software doesn't appear in the systray, only in the Unity dock (left side) 2) I can minimize BOINC to the dock but when I open and close other program it maximizes again, wich is very annoying 3) The software can't be closed, it only minimizes to the Unity dock, and nothing happens using right click and close either 4) The software doesn't start at startup or as a startup application 5) It doesn't have a screensaver like in Windows I know it's a lot a problems, but I hope they can be fixed, because I love to use this software, and knowing it's open-software it would be a shame it didn't run on Ubuntu like it should.

  edit : already printed on windows-machine Ubuntu 12.04, LJ 1018. I've tried making foo2zjs from sourse. I've downloaded firmware and placed it where necessarily manually from here I've also tried this - same as manual dowload but with some patches like stoping cups, etc.. I've fixed usbfs: process 11200 (usb) did not claim interface 0 before use problems using sudo rmmod usblp as described here. And now I have Aug 10 11:51:59 pav /usr/sbin/hplj1018: foo2zjs: usb://HP/LaserJet%201018?serial=KP07RLV... download failed. Aug 10 11:51:59 pav /usr/sbin/hplj1018: foo2zjs: loading HP LaserJet 1018 firmware /lib/firmware/hp/sihp1018.dl to CUPS USB device ... error. Before that prinet was stucking on "Sending data to printer". Now it's code is "Not connected". Unless ben@pav:~$ lsusb ... Bus 001 Device 015: ID 03f0:4117 Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 1018 Thank you.

  I'm developing a software to program a device. I have some commands like Reset, Read_Version, Read_memory, Write_memory, Erase_memory. Reset and Read_Version are fixed. They don't need parameters. Read_memory and Erase_memory need the same parameters that are Length and Address. Write_memory needs Lenght, Address and Data. For each command, I have the same steps in sequence, that are something like this sendCommand, waitForResponse, treatResponse. I'm having difficulty to identify which pattern should I use. Factory, Template Method, Strategy or other pattern.

• How do I start xterm with a headless system?

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 and I want to boot directly and headless in the terminal (no GUI). After that I want to startx to start a program in xterm. • How to Connect Lubuntu to Ubuntu Hotspot via Ethernet?

  I just fixed up an old laptop by installing Lubuntu 13.04. The laptop does not have a network card, so it can only connect via Ethernet. I created a hotspot with an Ubuntu laptop, but am having trouble connecting to it via wired. I am not asked for a password when I try to connect, even though the network has a password. The hotspot will not enable a wired connection, so that may be the problem. How can I connect a Lubuntu laptop to an Ubuntu laptop hotspot via Ethernet? Update: The connection also does not ask for a password when connecting to a gaming adapter.

• Payments for Android through Checkout/AdSense

  To those that don't know, Android developers in some countries recently transitioned from AdSense to Checkout for Play Store payments. This is told to existing seller accounts: Q: What happens if I have funds in my AdSense account but am not eligible for a payout yet? A: AdSense accounts have minimum thresholds for payouts. If you’re not eligible for a payout through AdSense for [month of migration], the funds will be automatically transferred back to your Google Checkout account. Once you enter bank account information through your Checkout account and have accrued at least $100 USD, your first wire transfer will be issued during the next monthly payout cycle. However, AdSense is still holding my funds, and since Checkout already paid me directly, following the new directives, I'm afraid the funds will be held in AdSense forever (I used AdSense only for Play Store payments, as required). Obviously, this is no replacement for Google support (a crusade to reach them, but nevermind...), I'm just asking if someone experienced this problem during the transition and how it was fixed.

However the temporary fix I found on the bug page helped me to reduce the effects, but it's not 100% perfect. Now they have totally fixed the bug in Compiz 0.9.8 for Quantal. I really need to get the official fix on my Ubuntu 12.04. Don't the LTS versions get bug fixes? Sometimes my desktop cube/cylinder appears like this : None of this happened in Lucid Lynx :( Thanks for having a look.....

• Github Workflow: Pushing small fix branches to remote, or keep them local?

  In Scott Chacon's workflow (explained eg in this SO answer), with essentially two silos (development, and master), if, say I have a small bug to fix (e.g. can be fixed with a few characters) is the optimal way of doing that: a) branch off of development a branch called e.g. fix_123. Push this branch to origin as I work on it. When it's done, code-reviewed, whatever, merge into development and push development to origin. b) Same as above, but without pushing fix_123 to origin.

• Static Application Switcher is empty after show dekstop

  Im using the Static Application Switcher to configure my ALT + TAB to cycle trough all applications not grouped. So far so good. Then I press Super + D to "hide all normal windows" (show desktop). This setting is from Keyboard - Shortcuts - Navigation. This also works BUT After hide all normal windows has been activated and I press ALT + TAB nothing comes up. I suspect they have been hidden so well that the Application Switcher does not longer sees them. Anyone know if this can be fixed trough settings somewhere?

• What is the most effective way to add functionality to unfamiliar, structurally unsound code?

  This is probably something everyone has to face during the development sooner or later. You have an existing code written by someone else, and you have to extend it to work under new requirements. Sometimes it's simple, but sometimes the modules have medium to high coupling and medium to low cohesion, so the moment you start touching anything, everything breaks. And you don't feel that it's fixed correctly when you get the new and old scenarios working again. One approach would be to write tests, but in reality, in all cases I've seen, that was pretty much impossible (reliance on GUI, missing specifications, threading, complex dependencies and hierarchies, deadlines, etc). So everything sort of falls back to good ol' cowboy coding approach. But I refuse to believe there is no other systematic way that would make everything easier. Does anyone know a better approach, or the name of the methodology that should be used in such cases?

• Should I put an app I wrote on my résumé even if it has low ratings?

  Last summer I wrote an iPhone app for the Toronto Film Festival. The development was pretty rushed, and the design goals were changed multiple times. In particular, the central film list view controller was redesigned three times in the week before launch. I forgot to update one of my functions to match the changed design, and the app shipped with a serious bug. While the app was fairly popular, this bug crippled the app and it got a lot of poor reviews. I fixed the bug as soon as I got a crash report, but it got stuck in the iTunes review process for the duration of the film festival. Should I put this app on my résumé? The app has poor ratings and most of the reviews mention crashes, but it's also the only work experience I have. Additionally, how should I approach this topic in an interview?   Some time ago I’ve described the issues that I’ve had since a new version of Read It Later, named Pocket, was introduced.I’ve waited with hope for a new upgrade, but I had a huge disappointment with the latest version 16 June 2012. It didn’t fixed any of the two major problems, that I  experienced since new Pocket was introduced-  1. iPad app still didn’t show many of the saved links. 2. ability to rename articles on iPad still wasn’t restored.I’ve posted the message into their forum. They did not show my comment on their forum( I would name it censorship, not moderation), but a few days ago I’ve received an email, recommending “try logging out of the app on your iPad, and back in again.” Their suggestion helped,  but I don’t understand, why it is not posted as a recommendation on their support site.So I decided to try InstAPaper on my iPad, Previously I’ve used it for Kindle. I never considered it before on iPad, because there were no free demo and I was very satisfied with RIL free and then RIL Pro. Currently InstAPaper cost $3, so the price is not an issue.I’ve checked that it has most of features that I am using(e.g. renaming, folders) and I am quite happy with it now. Actually I am using Pocket (or RIL free) for old bookmarks( I have 1000+ stored on my iPad) and for new bookmarks I am using InstAPaper.Having a solid experience with RIL/Pocket I’ve created a list of suggestions to Marco Arment to implement.1. Some pages stored in InstAPaper have removed essential sections of the text. E.g in many blogs comments are not stored in  InstAPaper. Some pages lost almost all of important links (e.g. http://www.lib.rus.ec/a/32416 -sorry, in Russian). RIL/Pocket has 2 modes to store offline- Web view and Article view. Web View includes all links/images of the original page, but it’s very reliable. Article view suppose to strip unrelated information, but often corrupts the content. I prefer to use offline Web view.InstAPaper should also support offline Web view, in case if stripped view removes important part of content.2.  Black full screen Saving on iPad Safari is very annoying. After user pressed a bookmark, the saving has some delay and then for a few seconds prevents from reading the text.Would be better to show as message on the top part(as in Pocket ). I am surprised, that  a full screen popup was  implemented recently as a desired feature. 3.There are no comments allowed on http://blog.instapaper.com/. I would prefer to post some of these notes as comments on http://blog.instapaper.com/ rather than write them in my blog and then send link to Marco.(I found recommendation how to add support of comments on tumblr at http://www.tumblr.com/help, but then realized that Marko was the lead developer ofTumblr.)4. Also there is no support forum. Search button on iPad version is visible, but doesn’t work- it forces to buy Premium subscription. I think, that it’s not correct. If the button in a paid version is visible and enabled, it should  provide  a working functionality, e.g. search in article names only. And leave full-text search for the premium support.9..Copy URL is an important operation and deserves to be in a first level of Action menu, rather than in Share sub-menu.I’ve also have comment re post http://www.marco.org/2011/04/28/removed-instapaper-free. Marco Arment  explained, why he doesn’t provide free version of Instapaper.  I believe that he is loosing essential part of his customers. When I decided which of iPad application to choose, I’ve selected RIL, because I was able to play with free version, and I liked it. I didn’t have a chance to compare RIL and InstAPaper on iPad, so I’ve bought  RIL pro. For a user there is no point to pay even $3 , if there are similar free product, that user can try and see, is it suitable for him/her.I’ve also played with Readability. It doesn’t have folders or tags(which is very important for me), but nicely supports full text search

• Thomson TG782T ADSL2+ modem loses network connection

  I am using an ubuntu 10.04 server (running on a Lenovo Thinkpad notebook) as my webserver. It is performing well in terms of handling the traffic etc. However my internet connection is ADSL2+ (using Thomson TG782T modem-router) and if the modem is reset, then my server loses network connection. The networkmanager icon shows a red exclamation mark showing that is has no connection. But as soon as I click on it and tell it to connect to eth0, the connection is back on. It must be something that networkmanager is failing to do and because of this, the reliability of my webserver is suffering. Any advice on how this can be fixed?

• Radiosity using a hemisphere

  I'm working on a radiosity processor. I'm projecting scene geometry onto a hemisphere at a high order of tessellation during a visibility pass onto a 1024x1024 render target. The problem is that the edges of certain triangles are not being rendered to the item buffer( render target )...so when I test certain edges( or pixels during pixel shader ) for visibility during a reconstruction pass, visible edges are not identified and as a result the pixel for that edge is discarded. One solution was to increase the resolution of the item buffer( up to 4096x4096 )...this helped and more edges were visible, however, this was not fullproof. How do I increase visibility? Here is a screenshot of a scene after radiosity is applied: the seams are edges along a triangle face that were not visible due to the resolution of the item buffer... fixed the problem by sampling the item buffer w/8 points:
