• My sound stopped working today, how can I fix it?

  This seems to be a problem with pulseaudio. I was logged in over VNC on my phone and started playing a video this caused X to crash (as sometimes happens). I restarted and suddenly the sound doesn't work. I have a Intel HDA/Realtek ALC889 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller alsamixer is detecting this just fine. PulseAudio doesn't detect this alsa device so is using auto_null as the default sink (logs below). When I properly kill PulseAudio (tell it not to auto-start) direct ALSA communication with the sound card works just fine. speaker-test, for example, works. So the hardware and ALSA layers are fine IMO. In the logs, it seems that the card might be "busy" but I really don't know how or why it would be now (and never before). Is there an ALSA lock file somewhere that it still there because of my crash? I just ran sudo fuser /dev/snd/* and saw this: oli@bert:~$ sudo fuser /dev/snd/* /dev/snd/controlC0: 1884 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: 1884m /dev/snd/timer: 1884 A look at the process list (ps aux | grep 1884) tells me process 1884 is arecord -c 1 -f S16_LE -r 8000 -t raw. No idea what this is or why it's running. When I try and kill arecord (as root), it just respawns and rebinds on the hardware. I'm in a very annoying situation where I don't know what is going on and don't know how to find out. I'm open to all suggestions to get this working again. Fire away. • WPF ComboBox in Grid Issue

  I am trying to put a series of comboboxes in a grid and then I bind them to a list. For some reason unknown to me when I click the open button on the combobox nothing happens. If I move a comobobox outside the grid it opens just fine. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong here. It has to be something stupid because I've used comoboxes before just fine.   I have a ION 330 ASRock just updated on Precise and the sound channel mapping is incorrect. Channel map is set as follow: Front Left = Front left Center = Rear Left Front Right = Font Right Rear Right = LFE Rear Left = Center LFE = Rear Right I am testing the sound channel using speaker-test -c 2 -t wav Can some one tell me how I can remap easily? I have tried several possible changes to /etc/pulse/defaut.pa unsuccessfully.

  I need to create a reusable UI component that accepts a number of parameters (e.g. an image URL and some label text), similar to how JSP tags can accept parameters. The Pivot docs for the "wtkx:include" tag say: The tag allows a WTKX file to embed content defined in an external WTKX file as if it was defined in the source file itself. This is useful for ... defining reusable content templates I was hoping that I could define my component in a WTKX file using standard Pivot components (e.g. a TextInput) and pass it one or more parameters; for example my reusable template called "row.wtkx" might contain a row with an image and a text field, like this (where the ${xxx} bits are the parameters): <TablePane.Row xmlns="org.apache.pivot.wtk"> <ImageView image="@images/${image_url}" /> <TextInput text="${title}" /> </TablePane.Row> I could then reuse this component within a TablePane as follows: <rows> <TablePane.Row> <Label text="Painting"/> <Label text="Title"/> </TablePane.Row> <wtkx:include src="row.wtkx" image_url="mona_lisa.jpg" title="Mona Lisa"/> <wtkx:include src="row.wtkx" image_url="pearl_earring.jpg" title="Girl with a Pearl Earring"/> <wtkx:include src="row.wtkx" image_url="melting_clocks.jpg" title="Melting Clocks"/> </rows> I've made up the ${...} syntax myself just to show what I'm trying to do. • How to limit access to Exchange 2003 Mobile Activesync server by user?

  So I was asked to set up an Exchange Activesync mobile gateway. That's done. It's a separat eExchange 2003 front-end server configured for SSL, and I've put an off-domain ISA server in front of it. Now I'm being asked to limit which users can connect to it. By default an Exchange front-end server allows any user who has a mail account to connect to the front -end server. So I'm looking at the permissions on the various IIS sites/apps on the server, but I know that it's easy to break Exchange Front-end server perms. So I've got the following in IIS: Exadmin Exchange EchWeb Microsoft-SErver-ActiveSync MobileAdmin OMA And a couple of others that I dont think are relevant. Can I change the permissions on one of these to restrict who can connect to Activesync? As a bonus: Can I do it in a way that does not affect ordinary browser based Exchange Access?   Ok, So i've always had trouble with enabling 5.1 in ubuntu. Running 'alsamixer': I have: Master, Heaphones, PCM, Front, Front Mi, Front Mi, Surround, Center All are at 100% Card:HDA Intel Chip:Realtek ALC888 (This is my onboard sound, Its a dell studio, with 7.1 integrated sound) Running "speaker-test -c6 -twav" I only get the front 2 speakers (Right/Left) making any noise.   So I was asked to set up an Exchange Activesync mobile gateway. That's done. It's a separat eExchange 2003 front-end server configured for SSL, and I've put an off-domain ISA server in front of it. Now I'm being asked to limit which users can connect to it. By default an Exchange front-end server allows any user who has a mail account to connect to the front -end server. So I'm looking at the permissions on the various IIS sites/apps on the server, but I know that it's easy to break Exchange Front-end server perms. So I've got the following in IIS: Exadmin Exchange EchWeb Microsoft-SErver-ActiveSync MobileAdmin OMA And a couple of others that I dont think are relevant. Can I change the permissions on one of these to restrict who can connect to Activesync? As a bonus: Can I do it in a way that does not affect ordinary browser based Exchange Access? • jqGrid multiplesearch - How do I add and/or column for each row?

  I have a jqGrid multiple search dialog as below: (Note the first empty td in each row). What I want is a search grid like this (below), where: The first td is filled in with "and/or" accordingly. The corresponding search filters are also built that way. The empty td is there by default, so I assume that this is a standard jqGrid feature that I can turn on, but I can't seem to find it in the docs. • Is Rails Metal (& Rack) a good way to implement a high traffic web service api?

  I am working on a very typical web application. The main component of the user experience is a widget that a site owner would install on their front page. Every time their front page loads, the widget talks to our server and displays some of the data that returns. So there are two components to this web application: the front end UI that the site owner uses to configure their widget the back end component that responds to the widget's web api call Previously we had all of this running in PHP. Now we are experimenting with Rails, which is fantastic for #1 (the front end UI). The question is how to do #2, the back serving of widget information, efficiently. Obviously this is much higher load than the front end, since it is called every time the front page loads on one of our clients' websites. I can see two obvious approaches: A. Parallel Stack: Set up a parallel stack that uses something other than rails (e.g. our old PHP-based approach) but accesses the same database as the front end B. Rails Metal: Use Rails Metal/Rack to bypass the Rails routing mechanism, but keep the api call responder within the Rails app My main question: Is Rails/Metal a reasonable approach for something like this? But also... Will the overhead of loading the Rails environment still be too heavy? Is there a way to get even closer to the metal with Rails, bypassing most of the environment? Will Rails/Metal performance approach the perf of a similar task on straight PHP (just looking for ballpark here)? And... Is there a 'C' option that would be much better than both A and B? That is, something before going to the lengths of C code compiled to binary and installed as an nginx or apache module? Thanks in advance for any insights.

• DELETE and EDIT is not working in my python program

  This is a simple python program that ADD, DELETE, EDIT and VIEW student records. The problem is, DELETE and EDIT is not working. I dont know why but when I tried removing one '?' in the DELETE dunction, I had the error that says there are only 8 columns and it needs 10. But originally, there are only 9 columns. I don't know where it got the other one to make it 10.
