• Android and PHP - Do I need to use sessions?

  I have created an Android App that communicates with a PHP web server. They both send JSON to each other. My App is almost finished, however there is one thing left to do: authentication. Since the user's username and password will be stored in Android SharedPreferences, is there any need to use PHP sessions, given that the user won't need to enter the username/password at every request? Since I can just send the username and password in the HTTP POST header for every request, and that I will be using SSL, is this sufficient? I guess I could add an extra field in the header called 'random' that just adds a random value, just to use as a salt so that the encrypted SSL payload will be different everytime. The reason why I don't want to use sessions is that my Android App would either have to handle cookies, or managed the storage of the session ID. If there are some serious cons to using my method above, then I'm more than happy to use sessions, however all advice is appreciated. Thanks

• Why is new showat attribute required when using code generation?

  When I generate code using T4 templates in Visual Studio 2010, I get the following error for each of my asp controls when I try to compile: Control "ddState" is missing required attribute "showat". I have never gotten this error in previous versions of .NET. Further, I don't get this error when I manually construct my pages either by dragging/dropping, nor do I get it when I type out the control text myself. When I generate code, I have to manually add showat="client" to my tag for the compiler to be happy. It was my understanding that I never had to explicitly specify this tag. The following: <asp:dropdownlist id="ddState" runat="server" showat="client" /> solves the problem. Why do I have to add this to generated code but not other times? (It's a VS-2010 webforms project, using VB, in case that makes a difference.)

• How to make a plugin for [Path] Finder to browse zip-archives as folders?

  What really surprises me is lack of some essential functionality in Finder, when one migrates from Windows to OS X. One of the things is a possibility to open an archive as a folder, i.e. staying in the directory tree and being able to drag and drop files from the archive to folders in the tree, sidebar etc. What would you do to enable such functionality? Update Path Finder is an awesome shareware app, which I am going to use instead of the standard Finder (as quite many Mac users do), so I am more interested in a plug-in for Path Finder to browse archives. There is a possibility to browse packages (check the View Options), so I believe it is possible to extend it to archives. There is also a SDK for making plugins for Path Finder. The only question - how to make the plugin, so all struggling people get finally happy?

  Im trying to post to aweber using just jquery. Im guessing hte addlead.pl is just a posting page with no response.

  I would like to define as class X with a static method: class X { static string get_type () {return "X";} //other virtual methods } I would like to force classes which inherit from X to redefine the get_type() method and return strings different from "X" (I am happy if they just redefine get_type for now). How do I do this? I know that I cannot have virtual static methods. Edit: The question is not about the type_id, but in general about a static method that should be overriden. • How to remove duplicate records in a table?

  I've got a table in a testing DB that someone apparently got a little too trigger-happy on when running INSERT scripts to set it up. The schema looks like this: ID UNIQUEIDENTIFIER TYPE_INT SMALLINT SYSTEM_VALUE SMALLINT NAME VARCHAR MAPPED_VALUE VARCHAR It's supposed to have a few dozen rows. It has about 200,000, most of which are duplicates in which TYPE_INT, SYSTEM_VALUE, NAME and MAPPED_VALUE are all identical and ID is not. Now, I could probably make a script to clean this up that creates a temporary table in memory, uses INSERT .. SELECT DISTINCT to grab all the unique values, TRUNCATE the original table and then copy everything back. But is there a simpler way to do it, like a DELETE query with something special in the WHERE clause?

  Hi, I stumbled upon a rather exotic c++ namespace problem: condensed example: extern "C" { void solve(lprec * lp); } class A { public: lprec * lp; void solve(int foo); } void A::solve(int foo) { solve(lp); } I want to call the c function solve in my C++ member function A::solve. The compiler is not happy with my intent: error C2664: 'lp_solve_ilp::solve' : cannot convert parameter 1 from 'lprec *' to 'int' Is there something I can prefix the solve function with? C::solve does not work

• Testing the load factor in my lab [closed]

  I am a system admin in a lab, I have ~90 computers in the lab and I want to check the load factor on them.. meaning, to check how many people are working on the computers hourly.. To see if I need to buy more computers or not. I am looking for a way to build a script to check if a computer is logged on or not.. (0 for log off - 1 for log on) After I will have this data, I know how to build a script to build me the graphs. All the computers are linked via a domain and most of them have windows XP (few windows 7) I'll be happy to get some help. Amihay

• What is your prefered way to return XML from an ActionMethod in Asp.net MVC?

  I am displaying charts that load the data asynchronously because the searches are the work to fetch the data is quite heavy. The data has to be return as XML to make the chart library happy. My ActionMethods return a ContentResult with the type set as text/xml. I build my Xml using Linq to XML and call ToString. This works fine but it's not ideal to test. I have another idea to achieve this which would be to return a view that builds my XML using the XSLT View engine. I am curious and I always try to do the things "the right way". So how are you guys handling such scenarios? Do you implement a different ViewEngine (like xslt) to build your XML or do you Build your XML inside your controller (Or the service that serves your controller)?

• Test/expand my email regex

  I'm really not confident with Regex, I know some basic syntax but not enough to keep me happy. I'm trying to build a regular expression to check if an email is valid. So far here's what I've got: [A-Za-z0-9._-]+@[A-Za-z0-9]+.[A-Za-z.]+ It needs to take account of periods in the username/domain and I think it works with multiple TLDs (e.g. co.uk). I'm working with the preg engine in PHP so it needs to work with that. Thanks if you can help!

  Hello, I have this following code: $(".preview").find("#panel").each(function(i, val) { var x = "" + $(val).html(); $(x).find(".dmPageHeadline").prepend(" 1 - "); console.log($(x).html()); html += $(x).html(); }); This code iterates through all accordion panels, concatenates its content and add " 1 - " to the header ( class "dmPageHeadline" ). Probably it's a simple detail, but i cannot figure it out... this line $(x).find(".dmPageHeadline").prepend(" 1 - "); doesn't preprend the desired text. Anyone can point me out what is wrong here? • Using Drools to provide error processing and consequence management

  Hi, I am working on a module whose purpose is to process Java exceptions and decide upon a strategy for dealing with them. The exceptions could be things I know about (explicit business exceptions eg TransformationException) or more general environmental stuff (JMS errors, IO errors etc) The facts inserted into the knowledge base are all the same class, and wrap (contain) an Exception. I want to write a rule that will explicitly match the exceptions I know how to deal with (eg TransformationException) and have another rule that catches 'everything else' The problem seems to me to be that for a fact containing a TransformationException, both rules will fire and the output will be uncertain. How would I go about writing such exclusive rules without relying on salience to steer the order of execution (this seems to be bad practice from what I have read)? I have a solution in place that I am not happy with whereby the outcome depends on the order in which the rules are defined in my .drl.

  Hi there, I’m working with Net beans IDE and I want to add a piece of code to my project in a way that the source code won’t be visible to the user who is running the project, I decided to export that piece of code as a jar file in eclipse and then add that jar file to the project. But unfortunately net beans does not let me import that. It says which it is expecting a . Or when I insert. It goes in to that class and I cannot import that jar file into the project by import instruction. Is there a command in net beans which creates and object from jar file and then makes access to the functions and classes of the jar file? Would you please give the format of that instruction? • Developing a high-performance, scalable Comet application

  Well, the title says most of it. I'm looking to develop a chat application that will hopefully become something more, and currently I'm considering my options for what I should build it on top of. I've taken a look at Tornado with Redis as my primary option - Tornado, being a Comet server, is perfect for long polling to retrieve the messages on Redis, which I have the intention of using as both a persistent data store, as well as a message queue with its nifty subpub features. However, I've also heard good things about Django, RabbitMQ, MongoDB and Orbited. JavaScript isn't a big problem for me, so Orbited's JavaScript support isn't too much of a boon. Really, I'd probably be happy to develop on the route I've chosen for myself, but if there are any gaping deficiencies in my plan, I'd like some kind person to point them out before I find I've wasted months on this.

• Tiling rectangles seamlessly in WPF while maintaing subpixel accuracy?

  I have had the problem described in the question Tiling rectangles seamlessly in WPF, but am not really happy with the answers given there. I am painting a bar chart by painting lots of rectangles right next to each other. Depending on the scale of the canvas containing them, there are small gaps visible between some of them as a result from sub-pixel rendering. I learned from the above question how to make my rectangles fit with the screen pixels, removing that effect. Unfortunately, my chart may display way more bars than there are pixels. Apart from the tiny gaps (which manifest as a periodic change in color saturation), this works well. If I snap each bar with the screen pixels, most of the bars vanish, though, so I am looking for another solution. Thanks in advance!

• Is Microsoft CCR gaining any traction?

  Microsoft's Concurrency and Coordination Runtime quite literally saved a project that was running into major issues with deadlocking. Since then I find that I use it more and more frequently for almost anything that requires asynchronous coding producing results that run lighter and faster than before. I can honestly state that it has transformed the way I think about multithread/multicore dev. Despite my personal love for CCR, there appears to be very little buzz surrounding it on the web and was wondering if anyone can offer any reason for this. Are there better alternatives, or is it a lack of promotion from MS, or are people simply happy with the existing tools?

  I'm looking for just a simple ListBox with build-in Drag & Drop. I think that Silverlite 4 Toolkit has something like that. The BoxList should be able to: reorder by draging & droping items drag item from one BoxList to another display preview (ghost version) of dragged item show drop location (like a line between items where the dragged will be inserted) I hope there is some solution from microsoft (in toolkit for example), but if not I all be happy with any working solution.   Hello, I'm trying to use YQL's spelling and search suggestions, but as much as I try I cant find a way to change the language/region for the query, how is this done?   I faced a problem - I need to use a macro value both as string and as integer. #define RECORDS_PER_PAGE 10 /*... */ #define REQUEST_RECORDS \ "SELECT Fields FROM Table WHERE Conditions" \ " OFFSET %d * " #RECORDS_PER_PAGE \ " LIMIT " #RECORDS_PER_PAGE ";" char result_buffer[RECORDS_PER_PAGE][MAX_RECORD_LEN]; /* ...and some more uses of RECORDS_PER_PAGE, elsewhere... */ This fails with a message about "stray #", and even if it worked, I guess I'd get the macro names stringified, not the values. Of course I can feed the values to the final method ( "LIMIT %d ", page*RECORDS_PER_PAGE ) but it's neither pretty nor efficient. It's times like this when I wish the preprocessor didn't treat strings in a special way and would process their content just like normal code. For now, I cludged it with #define RECORDS_PER_PAGE_TXT "10" but understandably, I'm not happy about it. How to get it right?
