• Git Use Remote Source Durring Push

  I have a local git repository a "central" repo at github. I'm working on a part of a project, while a friend is working on a related piece that is its entirely seperate repo, is it possible for me to simply link directly to my friends repo? For example, the app is called widgets. I have all my code in widgets/app/mycode and my friend is writing code that goes into widgets/plugins/awesome/hiscode. I want to be able to always have http://github.com/mycode/widgets/plugins/hiscode to be a direct link or clone to http://github.com/hiscode/awesome ? It could be possible i'm missing something basic in my question or knowledge of git, if so please ask, and i'll be happy to try to fill in the blanks. I am deploying to my production site via capistrano, so maybe a script of some kind may be easier?? I don't know (that's why i'm posting)!!

• C# Running several tasks at different intervals

  A design question: I'd like to build a Windows service that executes different commands at different intervals. For simplicity's sake, let's say I want to run some batch files. The input it gets is a list of files and the intervals at which to execute. For example: a.bat - 4 minutes b.bat - 1 minute c.bat - 1 minute d.bat - 2 minutes I was thinking about sorting them according to intervals, and then setting a timer for each of the intervals. I'm not sure this is the best solution and I'd be happy to hear some feedbacks. Thanks!

• How do i create a nice looking image fadein onload with mootools?

  Hi everyone! I´m creating a website for a photographer who would like a fine fadein on his images. I have excluded flash as a solution and would like to use those fine-looking effects of mootools fx. But the problem is that I'm really lousy when it comes to javascript. So if anyone could give me an easy solution for fading in one single image onload and when the image is loaded I would be really happy. I know there is a lot of different people out there who have this. But the problem is that i don't know how the code works even if it is a complete solution. So most important. • Massive git commit squashing

  My company is in the middle of converting from CVS over to git. We've been on CVS for a long time, so there is a huge history. Too much to do by hand. Looking at the logs, there is a lot of squashing that could be done. A whole lot. What I would like to do is hook in a script that will compare two adjacent commits. If it returns true, then concatenate the commit messages and squash the commits. I would also be happy with a command that accepts two commits and a commit message, then squashes them together. git rebase --interactive is close to what I need, but "squash" requires far too much manual intervention. I also looked at using "fixup" instead of squash, but I don't want to lose the commit messages. Any ideas?

• Why does my Eclipse crash all the time?

  Somehow stupid question, I have to admit - hope it won't cost me too many points. To make it clear: I would also be happy if you can help me find the reason for the crashes. I wouldn't expect a precise answer. However, I don't see why my Eclipse is crashing (freezing) all the time. Mostly when I save a file. For some reason, crashes seem to increase lately... I use Eclipse Helios (Version: 3.6.1) and java version "1.6.0_20" (OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.9.2) (6b20-1.9.2-0ubuntu2) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode)) on Ubuntu 10.10 (64-Bit).   Say you were to create a search engine that can accept a query statement under the form of a String. The statement can be used to retrieve different types of objects with a given set of characteristics and possibly linked to other objects. In plain english or pseudo-code using an OOP approach, how would you go about parsing and processing statements as follows to get the series of desired objects ? get fruit with colour green get variety of apples, pears from Andy get strawberry with colour "deep red" and origin not Spain get total of sales of melons between 2010-10-10 and 2010-12-30 get last deliverydate of bananas from "Pete" and state not sold Hope the question is clear.   i spent some time with the environment variable CA_COLOR_OPAQUE = 1 and have my findings to share. things that make a CALayer non-opaque (slow, more memory, ...): * contents with alpha (like an NSImage with an icon) * NSImage/CGImage from a pdf as contents (even when the pdf does not contain any alpha and opaque=YES) * backgroundColor = nil * CATextLayer with text in a (because it is contents with alpha) * rounded corners? maybe/sometimes * masksToBounds? not necessarily as we scale most of tree with CATransform3DScale on sublayerTransform i found also these rather irritating non-opaque: * CAGradientLayer that is somewhere down in this scaled tree (even when set all the gradient colors without alpha) * edgeAntialiasingMask != 0 of a layer that is somewhere down in this scaled tree the last two do not make sense to me. why should it be non opaque? what do i see? if anyone has any thoughts on these findings, i'm happy to learn as i couldn't find such a list yet.

• How to change the OSX menubar in wxPython without any opened window?

  I am writing a wxPython application that remains open after closing all of its windows - so you can still drag & drop new files onto the OSX dock icon (I do this with myApp.SetExitOnFrameDelete(False)). Unfortunately if I close all the windows, the OSX menubar will only contain a "Help" menu. I would like to add at least a File/Open menu item, or just keep the menubar of the main window. Is this somehow possible in wxPython? In fact, I would be happy with a non-wxPython hack as well (for example, setting the menu in pyobjc). wxPython development in OSX is such a hack anyway ;)

• HBase as a multimap

  Hi guys, I'm doing some large scale text processing work and I'm trying to get started with Hadoop and HBase. One of the things I need to do is build a multimap of some stuff, which I later use to look up things and get all items with a certain key (in a M/R job). Would it be OK to use HBase and insert many rows with the same key and rely on versions/timestamps to achieve a multimap-like setup or is this a bad idea? The multimap is built up in the reduce phase of a Mapreduce task by the way, or at least in the way I've formulated it on paper. Thanks! If more information is needed, I'd be happy to provide it. • Is there any method in Cocoa that helps iterating through all NSColor values(R,G,B only, alpha not t

  You may ask why do I need it? I have to detect all white objects at the B/W image. I'm coloring each object and taking its rect. In order fill each object with different color I would be very happy to use a function that can for a given color gimme a next one or so. In Qt there is a nice one that is called nextColor or so, returns the integer representing the next color(which can be easily translated to RGB). Does Cocoa have sth like that?

My application will just read xmls containing animation configuration and run it on a target device(Cannot mention details w.r.t device right now ,apologies for that) Not necessary that i want xmls it self but if there is a way to get animation details directly from the ppt file i will be more than happy. • jKey (JavaScript key shortcut plugin) Issue

  Me and a friend are writing a plugin for jQuery that makes it easy for devs to add key shortcuts and we're damn close but no cigar. We're having issues with the key combos. It seems like we are having issues when you call the same selector multiple times on a page. Try pressing alt+a... youll see it works one time, then gets all mangled up. Anyone know how to fix it? It'll be on github after it's corrected and I'd be happy to add "thank you to" link to whoever can fix this in the header with the copyright info :) It's nicely documented and i have all the code and stuff here. • Communicate multiple times with a process without breaking the pipe?

  Hello, it's not the first time I'm having this problem and its really bugging me. Whenever I open a pipe using the Python subprocess module, I can only communicate with it once, as the documentation specifies: Read data from stdout and stderr, until end-of-file is reached proc = sub.Popen("psql -h darwin -d main_db".split(),stdin=sub.PIPE,stdout=sub.PIPE) print proc.communicate("select a,b,result from experiment_1412;\n")[0] print proc.communicate("select theta,zeta,result from experiment_2099\n")[0] The problem here is that the second time, Python isn't happy. • Logging fatal/parse errors in PHP5

  I'm writing an error logging service that will be integrated into websites running on my server, that will email me error batches, etc. So I've been trying to find out if there's a way to handle fatal and parse errors, however not using the tricks to handle it in PHP code (output buffer, shutdown function). I'm quite happy to write some C code or something to handle it outside of my PHP code. I would also like to issue a redirect if possible (my sites use output buffering so there shouldn't be any headers sent). I'm pretty sure this could be done with a PHP module, but I've never written one and have no idea where to start.

  I am generating lots of images in java and saving them through the ImageIO.write method like this: final BufferedImage img = createSomeImage(); ImageIO.write( img, "png", new File( "/some/file.png" ); I was happy with the results until Google's firefox addon 'Page Speed' told me that i can save up to 60% of the size if i optimize the images. The images are QR codes, their size is around 900B each and the firefox-plugin optimized versions are around 300B. I'd like to save such optimized 300B Images directly from java. So here my question again: How to save optimized png images with java's ImageIO?

  I want to start developmet of new application using PrismV4, MEF, Ribbon. But now, I have a problem. How to create tabs for Ribbon dynamically? Each module in application could create own tab in Ribbon. And each tab may have many groups. How can it be done? Where do I need to place each group's definitions (what controls to use (buttons, textboxes, comboboxes, etc) and command bindings and how? Do I need to write XAML somewhere in Module, or all it can be done by code? And last question, how to notify Ribbon (in Shell) to add these tabs to Ribbon?   I am working with a large PostgreSQL database, and I are trying to tune it to get more performance. Our queries and updates seem to be doing a lot of lookups using foreign keys. What I would like is a relatively simple way to add Indexes to all of our foreign keys without having to go through every table (~140) and doing it manually. In researching this, I've come to find that there is no way to have Postgres do this for you automatically (like MySQL does), but I would be happy to hear otherwise there, too.

  I've a database used to store items and properties about these items. The number of properties is extensible, thus there is a join table to store each property associated to an item value. CREATE TABLE `item_property` ( `property_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `item_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `value` double NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`property_id`,`item_id`), KEY `item_id` (`item_id`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 COLLATE=utf8_unicode_ci; This database has two goals : storing (which has first priority and has to be very quick, I would like to perform many inserts (hundreds) in few seconds), retrieving data (selects using item_id and property_id) (this is a second priority, it can be slower but not too much because this would ruin my usage of the DB). Currently this table hosts 1.6 billions entries and a simple count can take up to 2 minutes... Inserting isn't fast enough to be usable. I'm using Zend_Db to access my data and would really be happy if you don't suggest me to develop any php side part. Thanks for your advices !

• CSS cross browser compatibility on Ubuntu

  Hello, I'm currently working in web development and my default desktop is Ubuntu and I'm kind of happy with the setup and applications I got going. But I need to test web pages for cross browser compatibility while still being on Ubuntu. I have gone through hell trying to get IE7 or IE8 (with wine) to run on ubuntu and when they finally worked they were very buggy and the graphics/scrolling was insanely slow. Of course there is the option of virtual box but again, too much GBytes just to run a small application! So to all the CSS gurus out there, how can I continue with my beloved Ubuntu and still deliver a good quality (tested) page. Thank you.
