• Domain Transfer Protection - need advice

  Hey, I am about to purchase a domain name for a bit of money. I do not personally know the person who I am purchasing the domain name from, we have only chatted via email. The proposed process for the transfer is: The owner of the domain lowest the domain name security and emails me the domain password, I request the transfer After the request, I transfer the money via PayPal When the money has been cleared the current domain name owner confirms the transfer via the link that he receives in that email I wait for it to be transferred. The domain is currently registered with DirectNIC - http://www.directnic.com/ Is this the best practice? Seeing I am paying a bit of money for this domain name, I am worried that after the money has been cleared that I won't see the domain name or hear from the current domain name owner again. Is there a 'domain governing body' which I can report to if this is the case? Is the proposed transfer process the best solution? Any advice would be awesome. Thanks! Jack

• iPhone: Creating a hierarchy-based table navigation.

  Hi there, I've tried to ask this before, but nothing got answered. Basically, I would like someone to explain to me how to create a table, which when a cell is tapped, pushes the user to the next view for that cell. I have this so far: Click here to view what I have. I would further like to, say when CSS is tapped, it goes to a new view which has another table in it. This table would then take the user to a detail view, which is scrollable and you can switch pages through it. I would appreciate longer, more structured tutorials on how to do each and every bit to get it to work. • CSS - changing the font color for a from select option in firefox

  I'm building a website for my church, and I'm teaching myself all about web design along the way. http://www.wilmingtonchurchofgod.org/contact_us.html is the link where you can see my issue. If you look at that page in firefox, and you click the select part of the form (next to, "Who would you like to contact?") you will see that when you hover over a choice, the font is white. I have tried various things to fix this, but can't find a solution. This seems to be specific to Firefox. • Should I use two queries, or is there a way to JOIN this in MySQL/PHP?

  Morning y'all! Basically, I'm using a table to store my main data - called 'Code' - a table called 'Tags' to store the tags for each code entry, and a table called 'code_tags' to intersect it. There's also a table called 'users' which stores information about the users who submitted each bit of code. On my homepage, I want 5 results returned from the database. Each returned result needs to list the code's title, summary, and then fetch the author's firstname based on the ID of the person who submitted it. I've managed to achieve this much so far (woot!). My problem lies when I try to collect all the tags as well. At the moment this is a pretty big query and it's scaring me a little. Here's my problematic query: SELECT code.*, code_tags.*, tags.*, users.firstname AS authorname, users.id AS authorid FROM code, code_tags, tags, users WHERE users.id = code.author AND code_tags.code_id = code.id AND tags.id = code_tags.tag_id ORDER BY date DESC LIMIT 0, 5 What it returns is correct looking data, but several repeated rows for each tag. So for example if a Code entry has 3 tags, it will return an identical row 3 times - except in each of the three returned rows, the tag changes. Does that make sense?   Hi, I'm using the following code to draw an SVG text box, and then change its text anchor attribute to 'left' as it defaults to center and that's nasty. The text generates correctly, but when I add this second line I get the error 'this.textBox.style is undefined' in my error console. • Combinationally unique MySQL tables

  So, here's the problem (it's probably an easy one :P) This is my table structure: CREATE TABLE `users_awards` ( `user_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `award_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `duplicate` int(11) NOT NULL DEFAULT '0', UNIQUE KEY `award_id` (`award_id`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 So it's for a user awards system. I don't want my users to be granted the same award multiple times, which is why I have a 'duplicate' field. The query I'm trying is this (with sample data of 3 and 2) : INSERT INTO users_awards (user_id, award_id) VALUES ('3','2') ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE duplicate=duplicate+1 So my MySQL is a little rusty, but I set user_id to be a primary key, and award_id to be a UNIQUE key. This (kind of) created the desired effect. When user 1 was given award 2, it entered. If he/she got this twice, only one row would be in the table, and duplicate would be set to 1. And again, 2, etc. When user 2 was given award 1, it entered. If he/she got this twice, duplicate updated, etc. etc. But when user 1 is given award 1 (after user 2 has already been awarded it), user 2 (with award 1)'s duplicate field increases and nothing is added to user 1. • Simple image editor to select area of image as wallpaper

  I've spent way to many hours looking for software to do the following simple task, so now I'll ask. I need software that will open an image and put a 'crop box' on it. You can set the 'crop box' to standard screen resolutions (1024x768) or define a custom one. You can move the 'crop box' around on the image to select the area you want. You can re-size the 'crop box' (selecting a corner and dragging w/mouse) and it maintains the correct aspect ratio. You can save the area in the 'crop box' to use as the Windows background. (The software doesn't need to set it as the background, I can do that myself in Windows XP.) The free software sites (CNET.com, etc.) have lots of image editing software that do things much more complicated than this simple task. I've spent too many hours downloading them to see if they will do this particular task. The ones I've tried would require manual trial and error to get the part of an image that I want saved as an image, with the correct aspect ratio so Windows doesn't screw with it (stretch, tile, crop) when I select it as the wallpaper.

  Windows 32BIT Box (Server OS) 4GB RAM a 800GB LUN Mapped to the above box as a local drive Around 700GB of text files (Yes text files and a few thousand word documents) nested in thousands of directories. I need to move this to a new storage and map another server to it. What would be the best way to go about it ? What I did was mapped the existing LUN to our new box and mapped a LUN from the New storage to the new box too, and tried copying (windows copy) but that wasn't good / fast enough considering the downtime. I am now looking for either a script which will do this or a utility (prefer opensource / free) to move this size of data at a good speed. 2 x 1GB Nics teamed ether channel 2GBPs Any suggestions or pointers would be off great help Thanks !

• laptop motherboard "shorts" when connected to adapter

  Disclaimer: I'm sort of a noob, and this is a long post. Thank you all in advance! summary: completely dead laptop with no signs of life whatsoever (suddenly, for no apparent reason) Here's the deal: Lenovo Y470 (only a few months old with no water or shock damage). It stopped working suddenly (no lights, no sound, even when connecting adapter with or without battery). I tried a different adapter (same electrical rating), but no luck. I disassembled the thing completely, and tried plugging in the adapter and looking for signs of life with all different combinations of components installed (tried all combinations of RAM, CPU, USB power cords, screen, etc plugged in). no luck. Then, I noticed (as I was plugging in the adapter to try for the millionth time) that there was a "spark" for an instant when I first connect the adapter to the power jack. The adapter's LED would then flash (indicating it isn't working or charging). So, I thought the power jack has a short of some sort (due to bad soldering or something). Scanned virtually every single component on the motherboard, and tested the power jack connections with a multimeter. No shorts or damage to anything on the entire motherboard. Now I'm thinking I need to replace the motherboard. But, my actual question: What does this "shorting" when connecting the adapter signify? (btw, the voltage across the power connections and current through it drop to virtually zero when the adapter is connected and "sparks", and they stay that way). The bewildering thing is that there are no damaged components, and the voltage across adapter terminals returns to normal after I disconnect it (so it's not damaged). Please take a look at the pictures (of the motherboard's power connection and nearby components) and see if I'm missing something completely obvious... • Sharing files between Mac Mini and Ubuntu

  I want to get files off a Ubuntu box (10.04) and transfer them to a Mac Mini. I am connecting the two directly with a piece of network cable (Its not crossover, but I am told the Mini can handle this). The Ubuntu box has Samba installed(I think), but no internet connection. When I create a shared folder in Ubuntu it doest show up in Mac OS. But the Ubunutu box is appearing in the 'Shared' section in Mac Finder. Help

  We have a set up where the browser makes an http request to Box A which in turn makes an http request to Box B. What we're encountering is that Box A waits for Box B to respond for two minutes then the users sees: The page cannot be displayed Explanation: There is a problem with the page you are trying to reach and it cannot be displayed. Try the following: * Refresh page: Search for the page again by clicking the Refresh button. The timeout may have occurred due to Internet congestion. * Check spelling: Check that you typed the Web page address correctly. The address may have been mistyped. * Access from a link: If there is a link to the page you are looking for, try accessing the page from that link. Technical Information (for support personnel) * Error Code: 404 Not Found. The requested item could not be located. (12028) Watching the logs on Box B we see that it takes 5 minutes to do the work requested. The problem is that the apache time outs on both boxes are set 1200 (20m), not 120 (2m). Any ideas where to look?

• Loose component cables causing HDMI video problems

  I'm not sure this is the correct forum, but I'll ask anyway. I have an A/V setup at home that has something like the following: Five Components (actually a few more, like a CD player, but they don't really relate to this question): Older Pioneer Receiver Digital Set Top Box Sony BluRay Player Samsung Plasma TV Speakers The reason for the receiver is so that all the sound can go through the speakers, rather than some going to the TV speakers and some to the external speakers. They are connected as follows: Digital Set Top Box connects via component video to Samsung TV directly via Component 2 (audio goes to Older Pioneer Receiver). Sony BluRay player is connected via HDMI 1 to TV, but audio goes to the receiver. Now, the problem I'm having is that when I have the digital set top box connected, there are times when the Netflix or Hulu streams I watch through the Sony BluRay player (it's connected to a router for internet access) will lose video. What I mean by this is that the sound of the episode will keep playing, but the screen will go black. If I jiggle the component cables, it will often come back. If I disconnect the component cables, it will always come back. I've noticed that one of the connections (the red component cable) doesn't like to sit very well in the component socket in the back of the digital set top box. It seems like there is a bad connection here, but it doesn't seem like this should be affecting the HDMI input at all. What I've noticed, though, is that when I disconnect the digital set top box completely (i.e. remove the component cable from the back of the TV), the problem seems to resolve itself. I'm not talking about actually removing the cable physically, because I thought perhaps the cables were mashing against one another, and possibly jiggling each other loose. To correct this possible problem, I took the component cable completely out of the cable ties it was in in the back of my entertainment center, as well as pulled the digital set top box out from the entertainment center altogether. It's now connected directly to the TV, without any other cables touching it to cause some kind of weird interference or just physical pulling on the cable. Same problem. If, however, I disconnect the component cable and just leave it sitting behind the TV, then the problem goes away. So, my question is this - what could be causing this? Is it a case where it's an improperly shielded component cable that's causing interference with the HDMI input, or something that's wrong with the TV? It's an intermittent problem, so it's difficult to track down. The TV isn't that old, so it's probably still under warranty. I'm just wondering if there is something else I can do that might reduce this problem without having to haul a massive television set out of my house to get repaired/replaced.

  I've created a GRE tunnel between LAN A and LAN B. LAN A is behind a router, and LAN B is behind a Linux box and this box has a pppoe interface. When i do tcpdump on Linux box i see that the traffic is routerd to Linux box (tunnel end), so my need is routing the tunnel traffic to internet. (12028) Watching the logs on Box B we see that it takes 5 minutes to do the work requested. The problem is that the apache time outs on both boxes are set 1200 (20m), not 120 (2m). Any ideas where to look?

  Hello, A DAS box is attached to my linux box using LSI SCSI HBA. Volume is properly detected on the linux box and filesystem is created using mkfs.ext2 /dev/sdc #No partition table I can not mount the volume using mount/dev/sdc /mnt/temp -t ext3 But I can mount it using mount /dev/sdc /mnt/temp -t ext3 -o loop Can anybody please tell me what "-o loop" option does internally? Has anybody faced this option before? Thanks in advance, prashant

• IIS Windows Authentication not working in Internet Explorer via host name; works via IP

  I'm trying to get a new Windows Server 2003 box working to host an ASP.NET application that uses Windows Authentication. Here's some info: IIS Anonymous Access is diabled IIS Integrated Windows Authentication is enabled I've tried it with and without Digest Authentication and it is the same result Both my machine and the server are in same active directory domain on the same intranet I'm using IE 6 My symptoms: In Firefox, via either IP or host name, a login box pops up, and if I enter my NT credentials, it works. In IE, via the server IP address, it works perfectly with no login box. In IE, via the server host name, it pops up a login box but even if I put in the correct credentials, it just pops up the box again. This is the problem. Why won't windows auth work in IE via host name but it will via IP address? Edit: Here's something else interesting. If I go into my Internet Explorer advanced settings and disable Windows Authentication, it seems to work just fine. And by work I mean that my test .NET app sees my NT ID as the current user.

• Windows XP can use a wired network port, but MacBook (OS X) fails on the same port

  I wired the Cat5 in my house seven years ago. The wired ports have worked fine with both my Windows XP laptop and MacBook. My wireless network also works fine, but I like to use wired occasionally. One of the Cat5 runs wasn't terminated with a jack, so I recently terminated this wire with a port/jack on the wall end and a standard Cat5 plug on the end that plugs into my router. This is the same setup as my other runs. Unfortunately, the MacBook isn't working well with the new wired port. The OS X Network System Preferences show the IP, Subnet, Router, etc., and everything looks fine. A "netstat -ibd" shows no errors or dropped packets. However, when I open a page in Safari, the status says "Contacting 'www.google.com'" and appears to hang. If I wait for a couple minutes, part of the Google page starts to display, but it is still not the full page load. When I use a Windows XP laptop on the same wired port, everything works fine. An internet speed test shows good results and all web pages load fine. A "netstat -e" under Windows shows no errors. I've used a Cat5 tester, and the cable tests fine (wires 1-8 light up in sequence). I've replaced both the port/jack and the connector twice to make sure I wired things correctly. I'd really like this Cat5 to work with the MacBook (and I'm trying to avoid running a new length of cable). Any ideas what the problem could be?

Unfortunately, that doesn't insert the tab character but instead moves the control to the next form element (like a button or a check box). For browsers like Firefox/IE, is there a way to get the formatting behavior of a tab, within a text box, by typing a key combination?

• Add a remote printer over ssh on OSX?

  I have a printer at my office that is connected to a local network and my linux box at work can see it on the network. However, it is not visible to the outside world. I was trying to figure out a way to add it on my MacAir and so far have found two options: 1) Using ssh tunnel via CLI: cat file.pdf | ssh user@linuxbox lpr. 2) With Chrome installed on the linux box, using the Google Cloud Print service on the remote box and automator on my MacAir I can add the printer to Cmnd+p dialog box I like the first method since it does not require Chrome be installed and the second one since it allows to use Cmnd+p inside all applications. I was wondering if there is a way to combine by using automator to run the first command line script. What about port forwarding? Is it possible to forward the remote CUPS 631 port to a local port and then add the printer normally? What other methods would you recommend?

  I have a server(fedora 12) with two nics on it, directly connected to say 192.168.1.0 and 192.168.2.0 the route table looks like this Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 192.168.1.0 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 192.168.2.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth1 eth0 = 192.168.1.15 eth1 = 192.168.2.1 and a directly connected user (Mythdora) on the 192.168.2.0 network with ip 192.168.2.2 and route table like so Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 192.168.2.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 the cable is a crossover and it works all three nics work -- connected my laptop to either end and assign it a valid 192.168.2.0 ip the pings will work. In fact if I disconnect the server side and plug the eth cable into the laptop and have thte box ping the laptop continually remove the eth cable and plug it back into the server both sides ping... unfortunately the box realizing it's connected to a different pc wipes its route table after say ten minutes or so. if I do a trace route from a box on the 1.0 network to the servers 192.168.2.1 interface never get a reply from it. as a note at one point I could ping the server from the 192.168.2.2 box but the server couldnt ping the 192.168.2.2 box.
