• Rearrange a python list into n lists, by column

  Trying to solve this at this hour has gotten my mind into a tail-spin: I want to rearrange a list l into a list of n lists, where n is the number of columns. e.g., l = [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8] n = 5 ==> [[1,6][2,7][3,8][4][5]] another example: l = [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10] n = 4 ==> [[1,5,9],[2,6,10],[3,7][4,8] Can someone please help me out with an algorithm? Feel free to use any python awesomeness that's available; I'm sure theres some cool mechanism that's a good fit for this, i just can't think of it.

• XamlXmlReader.Read() does not yield matching XamlNodeType.StartObject and XamlNodeType.EndObject on

  Hi, I am trying to parse a valid xaml file using the XamlXmlReader. It looks like it is 'skipping' some elements when when Read() is called. for example on the following xaml snippet: <UserControl.Resources> <Converters:AnyDbTypeToDisplayNameConverter x:Key="anyDbTypeToDisplayNameConverter" /> </UserControl.Resources> when reading I first get a XamlNodeType.StartObject on UserControl.Resources - makes sense then another XamlNodeType.StartObject on Converters - also cool. but then i do not get a XamlNodeType.EndObject on the Converters and immediately jump to the next line and does not report a XamlNodeType.StartObject. Any Idea if this is working as design ? looks like a bug to me

• Using WCF to expose underlying process

  I have a server application that spins up and monitors about 8 separate processes that gather data from different systems. The server app then runs some calculations over the aggregated data and stores it in a db. Simple stuff. I now have a requirement to modify the process so that it no longer saves data to the db but rather exposes it directly to clients via WCF. That's cool, I've used WCF a fair bit but I'm struggling a little with it for some reason. Basically my plan is to HOST the WCF service in my application and have calls redirect into the internals of my existing application but I can figure out how to do that without getting the WCF class to encapsulate the existing app. I want the service to inside my current app, not become it. Any suggestions?

• How many months of fixing somebody else's bugs would you endure?

  I understand that fixing bugs is a way to learn the system for the new people. But what if the system is so large that you can fix other people's bugs for 2 years and still not learn about every aspect of it? I would imagine that most people would get bored and not give their 100% to fixing bugs caused by others. Is there something wrong with the process? Everybody is chanting "Scrum! Scrum!" and getting certified, but that is just another phrase to me. How do you get noticed if all you do is fix bugs? Stand by a water-cooler perhaps and brag about how cool my bug fixes are? My political beliefs seem to be opposite from everybody else's at the company, and I have zero interest in pop culture/trivia/Tiger Woods scandals - there goes my opportunity to socialize during a lunch hour.

• What changed in the DataGrid that means it won't work anymore?

  I have a Silverlight app with a DataGrid containing some custom columns and all was working well. Then I updated to Silverlight 3 tools for VS 2008 SP1 and rebuilt it. Now it has the following problems: Rows aren't added when the collection is modified. The ItemsSource property is (and always has been) set to an ObservableCollection instance, which notifies when its contents change. This worked fine for Silverlight 2. However, in Silverlight 3 to get this working at all, I now have to null and then re-set ItemsSource - this seems like I'm hiding a bigger issue but I can't work out what that might be. I cannot select a row or a cell anymore. If I'm lucky, I can select one whole row before it stops working. I can't edit anything. I suspect this is related to the previous point. I'll post some source when I am able, but first I have to strip it down to the bare minimum. In the meantime, I was hoping someone might have some idea of what may be going on here. My gut feeling on the second two points is that my bindings are no longer working, but that's just a guess and if it is the case, I have no idea which ones. Thanks for any help anyone might be able to provide. Update So, I finally reduced my problem down to a simple works/doesn't work comparison. The problem seems to occur if I override Equals in my element type. As soon as I do that, something happens strangely in the ObservableCollection that contains that type, it seems, and my application breaks. To make it more interesting, there is a check to make sure that duplicate items don't even get close to being added to the collection. I don't exactly know why ObservableCollection needs to compare equality when inserting items (the stack trace indicates it is using IndexAt) but this seems to cause the issue. So, any thoughts?

  I was doing a checkout of a file in ClearCase, and I was unable to checkout this file from the frozen view because of this file which was a bleed-thru file. I thawed the view, and then I was able to check out the file, so I really do not have a problem at this time. I do have a question, though. What is a bleed-thru file in ClearCase? Any ideas? I have not heard this term before, and was interested, partly because it just sounds so cool!

  Hi, Is that possible to use Blender to create Cooliris-like 3D wall image viewer application under Linux? I don't see many people use Blender (BGE) to create desktop application, so I am wondering if this is possible. People normally use Blender for modeling/movie and game engine. I can not find a good way to create 3D application in Linux so far. I was thinking about pyQT+opengl. But I feel that is hard to do. No robust and easy-to-use qt+opengl toolkit available from my research. I know a little bit of Blender, that's why I am asking if Blender is an alternative solution. (python is preferred) The image viewer doesn't have to be windowed. It can be full screen, like a game?. I would like to add many cool effects into this application. Hopefully cooler than Cooliris which is written in flash. Thanks a lot.

  So I have some cool Image Processing algorithm. I have written it in OCaml. It performs well. I now I can compile it as C code with such command ocamlc -output-obj -o foo.c foo.ml (I have a situation where I am not alowed to use OCaml compiler to bild my programm for my arcetecture, I can use only specialy modified gcc. so I will compile that programm with sometyhing like gcc -L/usr/lib/ocaml foo.c -lcamlrun -lm -lncurses and Itll run on my archetecture.) I want to know in general case will my OCaml code compiled into C run faster than algorithm implemented in pure C?

The idea is that they will come see "how parents work", "how cool stuff is done", have fun, etc. Kids will be up to 17 years old. Now I suppose some of the teenagers already think of what they wanna do when they finally grow up and will ask questions like "how can I tell I should get a degree in software engineering and not in logistics/finances/whatever?" So I think we better be prepared and ready to answer those questions so that those who really fit don't waste time but use their potential to the full. But i want improve it with jQuery. • Are ASP.NET readymade controls really production worthy ?

  I have come across the ASP.NET ready made controls like grid, repeater... etc. For example while dealing with GRID i remember following facts, ASP.NET V1.1 has DataGrid with "virtual row count" which is heavily used for custom paging which is need of big sites to perform well. ASP.NET V2.0 added the GridView with all sort of cool features but also split the DataSource parts as different component. Also "virtual row count" is not supported and for pagination to be done DataSource control is need to be used. After all these thing i thought that ASP.NET control are not made to be used as is for the development. Please let me know whether i am right or wrong? Also if you think i am wrong PLEASE provide inputs/links which can help me come out of this thinking of mine.

• When is porting data from MySQL to CouchDB NOT advisable? Seeking cautionary tales

  I've dabbled in CouchDB and I have pretty good MySQL experience. I've also created one production application that uses both. I like MySQL but I've run into scaling/concurrency issues with MySQL that CouchDB advertises itself as a general solution for. The problem is that I have MySQL based applications that are pretty huge, and I don't really know whether it would be a good idea or not to try to port them over to a CouchDB datastore. I don't want to put in a lot of time and effort only to find out that my application is really not a good fit for CouchDB. Is there any sort of informed consensus on when porting a MySQL based app to CouchDB is NOT advisable? Any cautionary tales? I think CouchDB is really cool and want to use it more. I'd also like to know ahead of time what specific types of data querying scenarios CouchDB is really not good for, or if CouchDB can really replace MySQL for all the applications I create going forward.

• What would be the simplest way to deal with a text file using JSP?

  First and foremost I should acknowledge that I have no experience at all using Java ServerPages, but I'm positive about achieving this task if you guys help me out a bit since it doesn't seem like something difficult for a seasoned JSP programmer. Anyway the thing is, there's an actual running JSP application within a *NIX box which I somewhat administer with kind of good permissions. The idea is to create a new but dead simple JSP page to control some Korn Shell scripts I've got running there. So the goal is to make some sort of HTML form that will be writing some kind of scriptStatus.on / scriptStatus.off file: #!usr/bin/ksh # coolScript.sh # This is my cool script that is being launched by cron every 10 minutes. if [ -e scriptStatus.off ] then # monitor disabled else # monitor enabled fi which then can be checked for existence within the running script, therefore allowing to easily activate / deactivate it without actually have do deal with cron. Please let me know if all this does make any sense and don't hesitate to ask as much questions as needed. Thanks much in advance!

• Getting a NullReferenceException Error when invoking a Select File Dialog Box

  Hey everyone This is a real newbie question. I have simple app that selects a picture and display's that picture in a PictureBox. I decided to mess with the Opacity Attribute so I added a timer and created this cool effect where the Main Form's Opacity is increased by 20% every 400 miliseconds. The problem is that now when I click the button that invokes the Select File Dialog Box I'm getting a NullReferenceException error. private void tmrClock_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (ViewerForm.ActiveForm.Opacity != 1) { ActiveForm.Opacity = ActiveForm.Opacity + .20; } } The error message is pointing to the if statement.   Hi I have created the following effects on the images seen here http://techavid.com/design/test3.html . You see when you hover and then click on each image, they go from grey to color. When you click on one - the others go grey and the one clicked remains color. That's cool, but now I need the text 1st: Sun for example to display and hide along with its graphic button. The word "Sun," is a link that needs to link out to a URL so it has to be separated from the image effect code. What jquery or javascript code do I need to do this? thanks, jonah p.s.   I have XMLs(or Objects) that represents data at some point in a business process. I would like to be able to see what has changed between step1 and step5(two versions of the same XML or Object). Id like to implement this like diff function in version control system. how to do it in web app? P.S. I dont want to just store those files in VCS and than make it do the diff. However if I could somehow emulate VCS without having one that would be cool. P.S. I know there are some JS frameworks that offer diff functionality, but the XML could have 10MB, so I think it should be dont at server side.

• c: memory allocation (what's going on)

  Hi, everyone Please take a look at this piece of code. I'm allocating one byte for the first variable and another byte for the second one. However, it seems like the compiler allocates more (or I'm missing something).   Hi I am trying to find rows that are not in one table and insert them into another. The table I am trying to insert into has less columns then the other one. These columns are null but it would be cool if I could hardcode a value before I do the insert. But I am having so much trouble with just trying to get it to insert. I have something like this SELECT p.ProductId, p.ProductName INTO SomeTable FROM Product as p WHERE p.ProductName != 'iPad' I will get a error like this though Msg 4104, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The multi-part identifier "p.ProductId" could not be bound. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I copied and pasted the names in so I don't think it is a spelling mistake. I am using ms sql 2005 express.

  I'd like to create an image slider with some cool 3d effects, such as this one: http://tympanus.net/codrops/2011/09/05/slicebox-3d-image-slider/ The thing is, while I know how to use CSS3 3D transforms to rotate something, I don't know how to animate "parts" of an image. In the link above, the script seems to somehow "slice" the image into several pieces, and then animate those separately. However, the image was not sliced up beforehand - it is one whole image. Can anyone recommend any tutorials on how to achieve this effect, or perhaps just give the name of whatever technique was used to do this? Thank you in advance!

  I'm quite interested in automatic images translation to 3d models. Not really for commercial product, but from the point of possible academic research and implementation. What I'd like to achieve is almost transparent for user process of transformation series of images (fewer is better) to 3d model which might be shown in flash/silverlight/javafx or similar. Consider online furniture store with 3d models of all items in stock. Kinda cool to have ability to see the product in 3d before purchasing it. I managed to find a few pieces of software, like insight3d, but it couldn't be used in my case I guess. So, are there any similar projects or tips for me? If it would require to write that piece of software - I'd really love to dig into research on this field.

• Looking for a specific kind of WEB framework, no malarkey please

  We do maintenence on a number of systems. I'm finally in a place where I'm teh fucking boss for once, and have to design a large system that will have a long maintenance contract. There's a couple of tasks I find myself always repeating: 1) similar tasks for users with JS and those without 2) similar things for contents and rss/atom feeds, etc. To combat these I will need appropriate handling of assets (think JS files, CSS, themes/templates, etc.), excellent auth/user systems, javascript/ajax forethought, appropriate model setups. Codeigniter fails on many of these. Basically, with enough time I could build this system with Zend, but I'm curious what else is out there as Zend is also kind of a heavy-weight. We need something that is Rapid but maintainable, CodeIgniter is not maintainable. We will have a lot of AJAX APIs in place for the design team to play with. At first I thought jQuery was cool, but now I'm looking at Dojo.

• How to inplement a nightly process in .NET?

  I have a set of tasks that I would like to execute every night. These tasks include querying a database, moving and renaming some images and lastly updating a database table. My first thought had been to create a SQL Server job and use xp_cmdshell to move the files but after a bit of research i decided against it. My question now is what is the best way to implement this as a .NET application? Should I create a Windows service? A console application that is scheduled to run once per night? Some other cool way that I don't even know about?
