• How does ‘Servers’ view work underlying in Eclipse?

  ‘Servers’ is built-in view in Eclipse. We could integrate jee server into Eclipse easily. It could start/stop server both in normal and debug modes. Moreover, we could even set timeout and deployment path, things like that. Various types of server tomcat, jboss, websphere are supported, no intrusive to server. I am just curious about how these cool things happen behind the scene. The complete mechanism is large and complex, so I just want to know general mechanism about it, an article also could be fine for me. Thank you!

• can a program written in C be faster than one written in OCaml and translated to C?

  So I have some cool Image Processing algorithm. I have written it in OCaml. It performs well. I now I can compile it as C code with such command ocamlc -output-obj -o foo.c foo.ml (I have a situation where I am not alowed to use OCaml compiler to bild my programm for my arcetecture, I can use only specialy modified gcc. so I will compile that programm with sometyhing like gcc -L/usr/lib/ocaml foo.c -lcamlrun -lm -lncurses and Itll run on my archetecture.) I want to know in general case can a program written in C be faster than one written in OCaml and translated to C?

• Netbeans Intellisense for Rails

  Has anybody figured out a way to make the Netbeans intellisense for ruby and rails better? It either has too many options in the list (which I understand is a problem since it is a dynamic language). Or it has no options in the list, as if it is not dynamic enough to find everything. Are there any hacks to make it better, or is this just something that needs to be improved within the Netbeans source code? I'm currently using 6.8. Please spare me the posts about how I don't really need to use intellisense, and I should use vim or emacs. I'm sure the vim programmers are 10 times more productive than me with all their cool shortcuts, but I have no desire to learn these tools.

• .NET: Get all Outlook calendar items

  How can I get all items from a specific calendar (for a specific date). Lets say for instance that I have a calendar with a recurring item every Monday evening. When I request all items like this: CalendarItems = CalendarFolder.Items; CalendarItems.IncludeRecurrences = true; I only get 1 item... Is there an easy way to get all items (main item + derived items) from a calendar? In my specific situation it can be possible to set a date limit but it would be cool just to get all items (my recurring items are time limited themselves). I'm using the Microsoft Outlook 12 Object library (Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook).

• TFS: how to change custom field allowed values

  I have my custom field of string type with predefined set of values: "1 - Cool", "2 - Good", "3 - Average",... Now it is necessary to remove "2 - Good" value and rename "3 - Average" into "2 - Average". I see easy solution: just delete 2 existing "2 - Good" and "3 - Average" and create the new "2 - Average". Question: Q1: What will happens with issues that contain values to be deleted? Probably, system won't accept such work item change? Q2: What is a good approach to do what I need? Thanks a lot! Any thoughts are welcome!

• Programmatically set browser cookie (Firefox)

  I know from this question that Firefox 3.0 and up stores its cookies in an SQLite database. My question is: can you access this database from other desktop programs in such a way that you could add a cookie? I realize this has security implications. However, I do not want to read them at all. I want to be able to set one cookie if possible. I don't even want to overwrite a cookie. I just want to add it if it isn't there already. This is sort of a personal project I'm working on for fun. This question is mostly language agnostic. I would prefer a solution in C#, but proof of concept in any language will suffice. Extra credit: It would be cool to set the same cookie in Internet Explorer, too

• How can I get Facebook Profile image from email?

  There's an outlook plugin called Xobni that has a really cool feature, if a contact has an email address, it will fetch that contact's profile picture and display it. Their FAQ states the following: Xobni sends an encrypted email address to Facebook to retrieve the Facebook profile for the person who is currently being viewed in the Xobni sidebar. Your own Facebook profile is never altered by Xobni, and all Facebook privacy settings are strictly followed when viewing other profiles. I'd like to duplicate this functionality. However, I can't figure out which API call they're using. I'm assuming when they say "encrypted email address" that's laymen's terms for the email hash. Once a username is derived, the graph api looks ideal for actually fetching the image, but I'm having trouble going from email hash to profile ID.

• Most effecient way to create a "slider" timeline in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript?

  Alright, so here's my dilemma. I've got these two "slides" lined up, one ready to be passed into view. I have it working and all, but I can scroll over to the right to see the second slide! How could I have it you can only view the one slide? But. If you reload, you can see that you can scroll to the right of the screen and view the second slide prematurely, which is just not going to work for me. I still need to achieve the same seamless transition, but you must only be able to view one slide at a time. Also, I plan to expand with more slides, so if you're feeling lucky today, I'd really love to see an example of how I could support multiple frames. I'm very new to JavaScript (yet I know syntax rules, and general coding knowledge from other languages), so the better you explain, the more knowledgeable I can be, and I'd be very grateful for that. • Is there a way to test if a scalar has been stringified or not?

  I am writing a thing to output something similar to JSON, from a perl structure. I want the quoting to behave like this: "string" outputs "string" "05" outputs "05" "5" outputs "5" 5 outputs 5 05 outputs 5, or 05 would be acceptable JSON::XS handles this by testing if a scalar has been "stringified" or not, which I think is very cool. But I can't find a way to do this test myself without writing XS, which I'd rather avoid. Is this possible? I can't find this anywhere on CPAN without finding vast pedantry about Scalar::Util::looks_like_number, etc which completely isn't what I want. The only stopgap I can find is Devel::Peek, which feels evil. And also, just like JSON::XS, I'm fine with this secenario: my $a = 5; print $a."\n"; # now $a outputs "5" instead of 5)

If so, can you post a link to your work that transforms SO questions into revisions that codeswarm can understand (i.e. svn?)   so I have a structure like struct GetResultStructure { int length; char* ptr; }; I need a way to make a full copy of it meaning I need a copy to have a structure with new ptr poinnting on to copy of data I had in original structure. Is It any how possible? I mean any structure I have which contains ptrs will have some fields with its lengths I need a function that would copy my structure coping all ptrs and data they point to by given array of lengthes... Any cool boost function for it? Or any way how to create such function?

• Why are namespaces acting up in Visual Studio 2010?

  I've just converted a project to VS 2010 and something really weird is going on with namespaces. Let me give an example, the following code used to work in VS2008: MySystem.Core.Object { using MySystem.Core.OtherObject; ... } But now it doesn't, it either wants the whole thing to be put outside of the namespace like this: using MySystem.Core.OtherObject; MySystem.Core.Object { ... } or be rewritten it like: MySystem.Core.Object { using OtherObject; ... } I understand why this works and maybe is the correct way of handling this, but now we'd have to change thousands of lines of code! Which is not cool. Any idea to circumvent this requirement?

• Omit attribute name from validation error message (at start of it)?

  I write code in English but I'm currently doing a site which is fully translated to another language (validation error messages included). However, I have a problem because validation error messages always seem to include the name of the attribute the error is on at the start of the error, e.g.: Title Prosimo izpolnite naziv fakultete. I want to get rid of the Title at the start, like so: Prosimo izpolnite naziv fakultete. Any help is appreciated. I would rather see if this can be solved without installing any 3rd party plugins. If it's possible to provide translations for attribute names, that would be a cool solution too, but I would still like to know how it can be done both ways (omit or translate).

• Is there a greasemonkey for IE? or, how do I get a website to use MSXML6 instead of MSXML5 ?

  I don't know greasemonkey but I think it is a way to script or extend Firefox. Is there a greasemonkey for IE? for example: There's a website that is hosting a page that asks me to install MSXML5.0. I don't want MSXML5.0. I was thinking if I had a greasemonkey capability (if it is what I think it is), I'd be able to write a script that changes the 5.0 to 6.0 and everything would be cool. I know there's a way to do this kind of thing in Fiddler, if I have it running, and set up as a proxy.

  I'm confused...I'm using the same code in a different document and in there it's not a problem to get a connection to the database. • Use Python to search one .txt file for a list of words or phrases (and show the context)

  Basically as the question states. I am fairly new to Python and like to learn by seeing and doing. I would like to create a script that searches through a text document (say the text copied and pasted from a news article for example) for certain words or phrases. Ideally, the list of words and phrases would be stored in a separate file. When getting the results, it would be great to get the context of the results. So maybe it could print out the 50 characters in the text file before and after each search term that has been found. It'd be cool if it also showed what line the search term was found on. Any pointers on how to code this, or even code examples would be much appreciated.

• Installing the Updated XP Mode which Requires no Hardware Virtualization

  Good news for those of you who have a computer without Hardware Virtualization, Microsoft had dropped the requirement so you can now run XP Mode on your machine. Here we take a look at how to install it and getting working on your PC. Microsoft has dropped the requirement that your CPU supports Hardware Virtualization for XP Mode in Windows 7. Before this requirement was dropped, we showed you how to use SecureAble to find out if your machine would run XP Mode. If it couldn’t, you might have gotten lucky with turning Hardware Virtualization on in your BIOS, or getting an update that would enable it. If not, you were out of luck or would need a different machine. Note: Although you no longer need Hardware Virtualization, you still need Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate version of Windows 7. Download Correct Version of XP Mode For this article we’re installing it on a Dell machine that doesn’t support Hardware Virtualization on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit version. The first thing you’ll want to do is go to the XP Mode website and select your edition of Windows 7 and language. Then there are three downloads you’ll need to get from the page. Windows XP Mode, Windows Virtual PC, and the Windows XP Mode Update (All Links Below). Windows genuine validation is required before you can download the XP Mode files. To make the validation process easier you might want to use IE when downloading these files and validating your version of Windows. Installing XP Mode After validation is successful the first thing to download and install is XP Mode, which is easy following the wizard and accepting the defaults. The second step is to install KB958559 which is Windows Virtual PC.   After it’s installed, a reboot is required. After you’ve come back from the restart, you’ll need to install KB977206 which is the Windows XP Mode Update.   After that’s installed, yet another restart of your system is required. After the update is configured and you return from the second reboot, you’ll find XP Mode in the Start menu under the Windows Virtual PC folder. When it launches accept the license agreement and click Next. Enter in your log in credentials… Choose if you want Automatic Updates or not… Then you’re given a message saying setup will share the hardware on your computer, then click Start Setup. While setup completes, you’re shown a display of what XP Mode does and how to use it. XP Mode launches and you can now begin using it to run older applications that are not compatible with Windows 7. Conclusion This is a welcome news for many who want the ability to use XP Mode but didn’t have the proper hardware to do it. The bad news is users of Home versions of Windows still don’t get to enjoy the XP Mode feature officially. • Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Superman

  I enjoyed comparing developers to Spiderman so much, that I have decided to continue the trend and encourage some of my favorite people (developers) with another favorite superhero – Superman.  Superman is probably the most famous superhero – and one of the most inspiring. Everyone has their own favorite, but Superman has been the longest enduring of all comic book characters.  Clark Kent has inspired multiple movie series, TV shows, books, cartoons, and costumes.  Superman’s enduring popularity has been attributed to his superhuman strength, integrity, dedication to good, and his humility in keeping his identity a secret. So how are developers like Superman? Well, read on my list of reasons. Secret Identities They have secret identities.  I’m not saying that all developers wear thick glasses and go by an alias like “Clark Kent.”  But developers certainly work in the background, making sure everything runs smoothly, often without recognition.  Like Superman, when they have done their job right, no one knows they were there. Working Alone You don’t have to work alone.  Superman doesn’t have a sidekick like Robin or Bat Girl, but he is a major player in the Justice League.  Developers have amazing skills, and they shouldn’t be afraid to unite those skills to solve some of the world’s major problems (like slow networks). Daily Inspiration Developers are inspiring.  Clark Kent works at The Daily Planet, Metropolis’ newspaper, which is lucky because he can keep some of the publicity Superman inspires under wraps.  Developers might go unnoticed sometimes, but when people hear about some of the tasks they accomplish on a daily basis, it inspires awe. Discover Your Superpowers You have to discover your superpowers.  Clark Kent didn’t just wake up one morning with the full understanding that he could fly, leap tall buildings in a single bound, and was stronger than a speeding locomotive.  He slowly discovered these powers (after a few comic book-worthy misunderstandings!).  Developers are always learning and growing as well.  You probably won’t wake up with super powers, either, but years of practice and continuing education can get you close. Every Day is a New Day The story continues.  The Superman comic books are still being printed, and have been in print since 1938.  There have been two TV series, (one, Smallville, was on TV for ten seasons) and multiple cartoon adaptations.  There have been multiple movies, with many different actors.  A new reboot came out last year, and another is set to premier in 2016.   So, developers, when you are having a bad day or a problem seems unsolvable – remember, the story will continue!  There is always tomorrow. I hope you are all enjoying reading about developers-as-superheroes as much as I am enjoying writing about them.  Please tell me how else developers are like Superheroes in the comments – especially if you know any developers who are faster than a speeding bullet and can leap tall buildings in a single bound.
