  • Nokia backup on a Mac

    Hi there! As I have to bring my phone to a shop for repair, I want to backup my contacts, calenders and text-messages. My Nokia connects perfectly through Bluetooth with iSync. One baddy, however is that text-messages are nowhere to be found or for the matter of fact, impossible to backup from the phone using iSync. Is there a graceful, free application for Mac that would be able to backup (and later restore) the messages on my phone? The worst possible scenario would include me to write a script that uses the Hayes command set and kermit-ize all SMS's (hundreds at least), so a nice click-and-play solution would be nice to know about. I don't consider applications like Parallel/CrossOver as a solution, as PC Suite is quite buggy with those (which does have the functionality to backup SMS and e-mail). Many thanks!

    When I make a software update, the files are downloaded on my MacBook's internal hard disk. How can I set a different hard disk as default? I suppose the files related to the software update are compressed packages that have to be saved, opened and decompressed.     "Focus follows mouse" or "sloppy focus" is a feature common to X11 window managers on Linux/Unix, including GNOME, KDE, CDE, XFCE and window managers like Enlightenment, Fluxbox and Window Maker. It is also available via TweakUI on Windows. Some individual applications on OS X, like iTerm support it. What is it? Simply put, the window where the mouse pointer is has focus, rather than having to click a window for it to gain focus. Does the native GUI for OS X support this, with some hidden setting? Or, is there a good third party application that will do this?

  • man: command not found in zsh (Mac OS 10.58)

    I changed to zsh from the default (by changing the "Shells open with" preference in Terminal to "command (complete path)" set to /bin/zsh While most things seem to work, I tried to see the man page for a command and got a "permission denied" message. When I tried sudo, I got "man: command not found". I changed to the default shell (/bin/tcsh), and this is what I get when I open a new shell: Last login: Fri Nov 18 13:53:50 on ttys000 Fri Nov 18 13:55:21 CST 2011 /usr/bin/manpath: Permission denied. If I try man, I get the same "command not found message". I guess there is something wrong in my PATH, but I have no idea how to fix it. "echo $PATH" (in tcsh) gets: /sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/texbin In zsh, it gets: /usr/bin:/bin:/sw/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/texbin:/usr/X11/bin Any ideas?

    I've added my gmail account to Mail.app It worked find in previous days, and downloaded thousands of previous mails. But now, it can't connect to gmail server for days. What's the matter here? Here is my config in account setting: Account Type: Gmail IMAP Email Address: [email protected] Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com User Name: [email protected] Password: xxxxxx And also, is there any means that I can view the transaction log of Mail.app? Maybe there I can find more information.

  • SSL timeout on some sites, across all browsers, on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

    For the past several weeks, I've been receiving "Error 7 (net::ERR_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out" when I attempt to connect to either Twitter or Paypal via SSL. I get this specific error in Google Chrome, but the same problem occurs in both Safari and Firefox. Other sites work fine, and other computers on my network can access these two sites. I have no firewall settings that would prevent me from accessing these sites over port 443. I notice that both Twitter and Paypal both have "Verisign Class 3 Extended Validation SSL CA" certificates. It is unclear whether this is related to the problem. In an effort to troubleshoot, I attempted to open the test sites referenced on Verisign's root certificate support page, which worked fine. Just to be sure, I downloaded and installed the root package file and installed all included Verisign certificates. No joy. I feel like I've hit a dead end. Any ideas? Update the first: I also cannot connect to FedEx.com, who also has a Verisign Class 3 Extended Validation cert. Update the second: Aaaaaaand it fixed itself. I did nothing. Or, I did something that worked, but in a delayed fashion. Frustrating, but a win is a win. I'll take it.

    I have the following problem - Windows Vista does not connect to adhoc wireless network created on my Macbook. I have tried to create secured (with 40 bit key) and unsecured network but Windows Vista still has problems to connect. Windows VISTA informs me -- after 5 minutes of attempts - that setting up the connection -- with my adhoc network -- took too much time. My question: do I need to configure some settings on Vista to connect it to my Macbook? Maybe it is a problem with DHCP?     I have my own wifi network at home & recently when I checked the active clients on the wifi I found out the there is one active client. Router shows the MAC address of this client and I want to Access this computer in order to let him know that he's doing a wrong thing. I dont intent to do any harm to his data. I've discovered this is due to the Finder trying to render an icon preview of every music file and PDF it encounters. Over the network, this can take a long time. I know I can turn off icon previews on a per-folder basis using the "View Options" dialog. Is it possible to change these settings globally?

  • Eliminating "phantom" or "ghost" clicks on my Mac Pro

    Recently on my Mac Pro I have been experiencing phantom clicks and other strange behaviors. I have been rummaging through my system preferences to try and root out possible causes, and recently came across a strange finding in the Exposé panel (the keyboard modifiers are there from my taking the screenshot): I have had a Logitech 2-button mouse with a mouse wheel for years, and have never had a problem with it in the past. In addition I am running OS X 10.6.8 and have not had any issues like this up to this point. Is this a known issue? Is the extensive mouse listing a red herring? Are there any fixes for either issue?

ERROR: `/private/tmp/pear/temp/imagick/configure --with-imagick="/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin"' failed The error above shows up when I input /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin after Please provide the prefix of Imagemagick installation [autodetect] Do I need to install some other library before running the Imagick install command?

  • Mac Terminal: changed my shell, now can't start it

    I installed bash 4.0 via MacPorts, then used sudo chsh -s /opt/local/bin/bash my_user to change my shell. Before that I tried just running plain chsh without sudo, but it wouldn't allow me to change my shell to that path. Now when I try to start Terminal I'm getting a message that my shell has an illegal value, so Terminal won't start. I click Quit, and, unsurprisingly but annoyingly, it quits immediately. How do I reset my shell so I can start Terminal again? How do I set my shell to bash installed via MacPorts in a way that it'll work? Why does Terminal think my shell is illegal anyway? Is it siding with the neo-prohibitionists? Mac OS X 10.5.8. Everything super mega up-to-date.

  • Setting up NIS/NFS on Mac OS 10.6

    We have an Ubuntu NIS/NFS server at work and we recently got a few new iMacs. Is there a way to set them up so they can use the linux user accounts and mount the shared nfs files? Are there any guides on how to do this? I've been googling with no success. I tried getting NFS to work by connecting to the server via the Disk Utility but after I run 'sudo automount' from the command line and ls the directory I tried to mount it to (Volumes/nfs) it gives a permissions error. If there isn't a way to do this, anyone know of any not to complicated ways to share user accounts and files between mac and linux computers (and even hypothetically a windows computer one day?) I know its kind a of huge question, but I'll greatly appreciate any advice on the topic. Thanks!

  • Unset the system immutable bit in Mac OS X

    In theory I believe you can unlock and remove the system immutable bit with: chflags noschg /Path/To/File But how can you do this when you've set the bit as root? I have a file that is locked, and even running this command as root will not work as the operation is not permitted. I tried logging in as Single-User mode to no avail. I seem to remember that even though you are in as root you are in at level '1'. And to be able to remove the system-immutable flag you need to be logged in at level '0'. Does this have something to do with this issue?
