• vb.net array for slideshow button

  Hey all, i am in the middle of trying to figure out how to go about doing this... I have a form that i call like so: call frmSlideShow.showWhat(1,4,8,9,11,22) Each of the numbers represents a different image slide (slide1.png, slide4.png, etc..). The problem i am having is trying to create a "previous" and "next" button to flip through them all. Trying to figure out what number the user is on and going from there and seeing what numbers are still left from the list above that was sent, etc. If anyone has an idea how i would go about doing that then that would be awesome! :) David

• Building highly scalable web services

  My team and I are in the middle of developing an application which needs to be able to handle pretty heavy traffic. Not facebook level but in the future I would like to be able to scale to that without massive code re-writes. My thought was to modularise out everything into seperate services with their own interfaces. So for example messaging would have a messaging interface that might have send and getMessages() as methods and then the PHP web app would simply query this interface through soap or curl or something like that. The messaging application could then be any kind of application so a Java application or Python or whatever was suitable for that particular functionality with its own seperate database shard. Is this a good approach?

• How do i keep my DB and lucene in sync?

  So i can have a transaction in sql. But i am sure its not a good idea to wait in the middle of a transaction for lucene to finish also i am unsure if lucene is permanently saved in the DB until i do something there. Whats the best way to keep my DB and lucene in sync? I am thinking of adding a lucene_queue in my sql db and everytime i make a change i add it into the queue (removing older queue if any) and delete it once it is done. Is this the best way? Also i am unsure how to make lucene permanently keep the changes i made and how frequent i can/should do it.

• Disable keyboard on EditText

  I'm doing a calculator. So I made my own Buttons with numbers and functions. The expression that has to be calculated, is in an EditText, because I want users can add numbers or functions also in the middle of the expression, so with the EditText I have the cursor. But I want to disable the Keyboard when users click on the EditText. I found this example that it's ok for Android 2.3, but with ICS disable the Keyboard and also the cursor. public class NoImeEditText extends EditText { public NoImeEditText(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) { super(context, attrs); } @Override public boolean onCheckIsTextEditor() { return false; } } And then I use this NoImeEditText in my XML file <com.my.package.NoImeEditText android:id="@+id/etMy" .... /> How I can make compatible this EditText with ICS???   I am just looking into using HTML Purifier to ensure that a user-inputed string (that represents the name of a person) is sanitized. I do not want to allow any html tags, script, markup etc - I just want the alpha, numeric and normal punctuation characters. The sheer number of options available for HTML Purifier is daunting and, as far as i can see, the docs do not seem to have a beggining/middle or end see: http://htmlpurifier.org/docs Is there a simple hello world tutorial online that shows how to sanitize a string removing all the bad stuff out of it. • AVPlayer seeking to a different point after app resume

  I have an AVPlayer, the video in it is ~2 seconds long. After the video plays, if the app goes to the background and reenters the foreground I need the video to still be shown exactly as it was when the app was exited. The AVPlayer sticks around just fine, however when I reenter the app from the background the video appears to be seeked to the middle of the video. However, if I just play the video, it starts from the beginning, so it doesn't seem like it actually seeked and is just showing a preview image. I've tried to auto-seek the video to the end on relaunch but nothing happens . Nothing I can figure out or find in the docs would describe this behavior. Any tips on having the video launch either at the beginning or end?

  I am thinking of designing a web site having multiple related services. For every action of the user in a service there will be some computation going on in each of the other services. I want to display the service in action (chosen by the user) in the middle of the page in enlarged mode and rest of the services as small sized (shrunk) versions around the enlarged mode. The services which are shown in the shrunk version, should actually show what is happening in that service, at run time as if that was the chosen service. A close match to this sort of behavior I know is in Reliance BigTV, where all the small images of all the channels will be going on, and we can choose the one that we want to watch. After choosing that one image will become big and occupy the screen. Please, let me know if I can do some thing like this using css, html, ajax & php.

• Implementing Dijkstra's Algorithm

  I've been tasked (coursework @ university) to implement a form of path-finding. Now, in-spec, I could just implement a brute force, since there's a limit on the number of nodes to search (begin, two in the middle, end), but I want to re-use this code and came to implement Dijkstra's algorithm. I've seen the pseudo on Wikipedia and a friend wrote some for me as well, but it flat out doesn't make sense. The algorithm seems pretty simple and it's not a problem for me to understand it, but I just can't for the life of me visualize the code that would realize such a thing. Any suggestions/tips?

• Overtime culture slowly creeping in - How do I handle this?

  Our company was one of the very few companies that did not enforce overtime. As such, all my team members promptly worked 40-48 hours a week and everything was good. We hired a few new developers and one of them has positioned himself to be a team lead. He has started working overtime, sending emails in the middle of the night which has come somewhat as a shock for the laid back team. Obviously, the higher ups seem to love him for being the "bad guy" enforcing overtime. Before this goes out of control, what steps do I take to stop this from continuing. I would rather not bring this up with the bosses for the fear of being seen as a whining team member. I am not sure if I should reply to his email outside work hours and encourage him to enforce this culture on our team. Thoughts?

• How to read a technical book to remember most of it?

  There are many technical books that become thinker and thicker and the pressure from the technical society is more and more to read them and remember many concepts described in them. But it's so hard to do it. I have only a few hour a week to read them and when I reach the middle of the book I forgot most of what I've read at the beginning, because lots of time passed. If I go back, I'll just re-read the same stuff over and over, never going past 50% of the book. So, even after I finished reading a thick tech book I forgot most of it. How do you remember all that stuff? I had a talk in my University on how to do it. They advised to use some cards with basic info so that you can remember the details when you look at it. Do you use such cards or do you have other ideas how to do it?

• Speech.Recognition GrammarBuilder/Choices Tree Structure

  In playing around with C#'s Speech Recognition, I've stumbled across a road block in the creation of an effective GrammerBuilder with Choices (more specifically, Choices of Choices). IE considering the following logical commands. One solution would to "hard code" every combination of Speech lines and add them to a GrammarBuilder (ie "SET LEFT COLOR RED" and "SET RIGHT CLEAR", however, this would quickly max out the limit of 1024, especially when dealing with number combinations. Another solution would to Append all 'columns' as "Choices" (and filter out incorrect paths upon 'recognition', however this seems like it's processor heavy and unnecessary. The middle ground, seems like the best path - with Choices of Choices - like a tree structure on a GrammarBuilder - however I'm not sure how to proceed. Any suggestions?

• Which containers / graphics components to use in a simple Java Swing game?

  I'm creating a simple labyrinth game with Java + Swing. The game draws a randomized labyrinth on the screen, places a figure in the middle, and the player is then supposed to find the way out by moving the figure with arrow-keys. As for now, I'm using a plain background and drawing the walls of the labyrinth with Graphics.drawLine(). I have a custom picture of the figure in a .gif file, which I load as a BufferedImage object. However, I want the player to see only part of the labyrinth at a time, and the screen should follow the figure in the game, as the player moves around. I'm planning to do this by creating an Image object of the whole labyrinth when it is created, and then "cutting" a square around the current position of the figure and displaying this with Graphics.drawImage(). I'm new with Swing though, and I can't figure out how to draw the figure at different positions "above" the labyrinth without redrawing the whole thing. Which container/component should I use for the labyrinth and then for the figure to achieve this?

• Custom routes/paths/roads on Google Maps

  Hey guys. I need to know, and as quickly as possible, if what I need is achievable. I need to be able to, using either V2 OR V3 (preferably 3), create paths which ignore buildings in a sense. I was trying to create even a kml file to draw out all of the paths myself, and then find some way to turn them on/off as needed. For example. The user wants to go from point A to point B. Between these points is a number of buildings. The user physically CAN walk through these buildings(it's a campus). I want to show them that on the map. This way you don't have to do a loop-de-loop around, say, a parking lot, just to get to the other end of it. If there is ANY way AT ALL to do this, I'd love to know. An example of what I require can be found here: http://www.uottawa.ca/maps/ It's all pre-determined paths based on the two inputs from the user into the dropdown menu. I can plainly see this. But I have no clue if a) this can be done in v3, and b) how on earth they did it themselves. Assistance required, and greatly appreciated!

  Hi. I have a button that launches the google maps app on my device via an intent. I want to be able to pass it a php page that generates a KML file. I have done this on a website before using the googlemaps api in JS - but it doesn't seem to work on Android. • Finding specific words in a file (Python language)

  I have to write a program in python where the user is given a menu with four different "word games". There is a file called dictionary.txt and one of the games requires the user to input a) the number of letters in a word and b) a letter to exclude from the words being searched in the dictionary (dictionary.txt has the whole dictionary). Then the program prints the words that follow the user's requirements. My question is how on earth do I open the file and search for words with a certain length in that file. I only have a basic code which only asks the user for inputs. I'm am very new at this please help :( this is what I have up to the first option. The others are fine and I know how to break the loop but this specific one is really giving me trouble. I have tried everything and I just keep getting errors. Honestly, I only took this class because someone said it would be fun. It is, but recently I've really been falling behind and I have no idea what to do now.   This is for a genetic algorithm fitness function, so it is important I can do this as efficiently as possible, as it will be repeated over and over. Lets say there is a function foo(int[] array) that returns true if the array is a "good" array and false if the array is a "bad" array. What makes it good or bad does not matter here. Given the full array [1,6,8,9,5,11,45,16,9], lets say that subarray [1,6,8] is a "good" array and [9,5,11,45] is a "good" array. Furthermore [5,11,45,16,9] is a "good" array, and also the longest "good" subarray. Notice that while [9,5,11,45] is a "good" array, and [5,11,45,16,9] is a "good" array, [9,5,11,45,16,9] is a "bad" array. We wants the length counts of all "good" arrays, but not subarrays of "good" arrays. Furthermore, as described above, a "good" array might begin in the middle of another "good" array, but the combination of the two might be a "bad" array.

• UIActionSheet cancel button strange behaviour

  I have a UIBarButtonItem opening an action sheet to offer users choices about what to do. Everything works as expected unless I try to click on the "Cancel" button. The target of the button appears to have moved up from where it should be. I can only activate it by clicking somewhere in the middle of the "Cancel" and "Ok" buttons. I've tried at action sheets in other applications and they work fine, so it's not just my big thumb. • Make jQuery-ui draggable handle cover entire page

  What would be the best way to make an element draggable when clicking anywhere in the window? Would I have to use a container <div> that covers the whole window? I tried making the body draggable but that didn't work. The problem with using a container <div> is that it moves and therefore doesn't cover the whole of the screen any more after it has been dragged. What about making a really vast container <div> that spans a large number of pixels in every direction so you would never get to the edge of it. Is that a bad idea? The idea (simplified) is to have a page with a square in the middle that can be dragged by dragging any part of the window. Here's a wonderfully unnecessary mockup :)

  Hi! I would like to ask you about what formal system could be more interesting to implement from scratch/reverse engineer. I've looked through some existing and rather open (open in the sense of free/open-source) projects of logical/declarative programming systems. I've decided to make up something similar in my free time, or at least to catch the general idea of implementation. It would be great if some of these systems would provide most of the expressive power and conciseness of modern academic investigations in logic and it's relation with computational models. What would you recommend to study at least at the conceptual level? For example, Lambda-Prolog is interesting particularly because it allows for higher order relations, but AFAIK (I might really be mistaken :)) is based on intuitionist logic and therefore lack the excluded-middle principle; that's generally a disatvantage for me.. I would also welcome any suggestions about modern logical programming systems which are less popular but more expressive/powerful. I guess, this question will need refactoring, but thank you in advance! :)

• Android Plugin in Eclipse 3.5 on Ubuntu 64bit got problems with properties

  Hi there! I got a huge problem with the Android Development Tools ADT running in Eclipse Galileo (3.5.1) on Ubuntu 9.10, 64bit. On this platform, I do not manage to see any property edit dialogs for layout properties. E.g. the one where you can select a string resource ID for text fields, or a drawable ID for image fields or backgrounds. Whenever I click on the ... button next to the property value - nothing happens, except this button disappears. Properties with a list of possible values, e.g. "wrap_content" or "fill_parent" are displayed in a dropdown box directly in the properties field. On a different system I work in a Windows environment with Eclipse 3.4 and the same ADT: no problems whatsoever, everything works fine, the dialogs come perfectly. Does anyone know what to do here? Where's the problem? Why does Eclipse not tell me that something goes wrong? Thanks! NEW DISCOVERIES: I found out that it might not even be an Android problem, but a general Eclipse problem that I can see with all version (Ganymede, Galileo, Helios) on my Linux (Ubuntu) system. It must be a simple UI problem: the button with ... next to the values does not receive the mouse click!! I managed to see the appropriate dialogs to edit the property values by doubleclicking the button - crazy, strange, ugly behavior! But why on earth does nobody else know about this problem - I cannot find anything else on the net about it! Could it be related to this strange "GDK native window problem" on Gnome? HELP!
