  • Windows Server 2003 - Handling hundreds of simultaneous downloads

    At the moment I have a single server with 4 1TB hard disks, daily I haver over 150 MP3 music files uploaded (around 80mb each). At busy periods there is over 300 people streaming / downloading these mixes all at once, 75% of the activity is on the most recently uploaded stuff which is all on a single hard disk. My read speads on the hard disk are very low due to such high activity of 200+ reads all happening at the same time on a single hard disk (ran some tests with HDTach). What would be a logical solution to solve this, a couple of ideas I had are: Load balance with another server Install faster hard disks (what are best these days? SCSI / SATA) Spread the most accessed files over the 4 drives so it is sharing the load between all 4 disks, instead of all the most accessed (most recent) all on the most recently installed drive. Obviouslly load balance is the most expensive option, but would it dramatically help? Some help on this situation would be great!

  • TCP RST Reset Every 5 Minutes on Windows 2003 sp2

    Hey, Recently I had a web developer come to me and ask why he was receiving connection errors in his app that was accessing a sql database. So, I went through my normal trouble shooting steps to isolate or reproduce the issue. I discovered that if I connected to the database using Query Analyzer and let the connection idle for 5 minutes it would disconnect. Meaning... I would no longer be able to refresh my tables or any other object/node within the object browser in Query Analyzer. I would have to right click on the instance and refresh for it to re-establish the connection. Next I went to wireshark and ran a capture on the client pc's nic card. Sure enough it was receiving a TCP RST reset every 5 min if the connection idled longer than 5 min. I also ran a capture on the SQL Server and noticed the TCP RST reset command as well. Attached below is the capture from the client Machine. If someone could please assist... That would be great. -I checked all settings within SQL Server 2000 against another server and they all seem to be the same. -Issue does not occur if I connect to any other SQL server 2000 server. -Issue does not occur if connecting to SQL on the server itself... so only over the network. -I consulted with network team and this is the response back: There are no firewalls or proxies in between SQL Server and your desktop. The traffic flows like this: Desktop-Access Switch-Distro Switch-Core Switch-Datacenter Switch-SQL Server None of the switches have security ACL’s configured on them. Also they stated that NAT was not turned on. -Issue does not occur with SQL server Enterprise Manager. -Ran SQL Profiler at the same time and did not see anything out of the ordinary during the RST I HAVE SEARCHED HIGH AND LOW ON GOOGLE FOR A RESOLUTION FOR THIS ISSUE. NO LUCK! My questions are: What could be causing this? Wrong Sequence number? setting in a router or switch the network team may have over looked? Setting within Windows?   • Cannot run "Automation Anywhere" exe files from console (session 0) on Windows Server 2003 64 bit

    I have a simple exe created from an Automation Anywhere task that displays a message box saying hello world. I created this simple exe just for debugging the following issue. When I log in to the console (session 0), and run the Automation Anywhere created executable, it starts to run the task, it shows up in the applications and processes list in the task manager and it shows the two "loading..." windows briefly on the screen, just like normal. But after that, nothing happens... the "hello world" message does not show up. The exe is done and is removed from the application and process list in the task manager. The user I am logged in as, has admin rights and the machine uses "autologin" to automatically log in using this profile when it starts up. If I right click on the exe and "run as" another admin user, the exe runs properly, showing the "hello world" message. Also, if I log into the server in a new session, with the original user (the one that has the problems in session 0), and then run the exe, it runs properly and shows the "hello world". It works fine in any session other than the console session. There is something about the console session that is causing the exe not to run properly... even though it does appear to start running the exe. I should also mention that everything was working fine until Monday at midnight, after which none of the executables could be run successfully. Nothing was changed on the server and no updates were installed. I have since installed windows updates, but that didn't change anything. Looking for some advice on how to get these executables working in the console session again. Thanks!

  • MS Access 2003 - Format a Number with Commas AND Auto-Decimal

    On a report I have a control which is bound to a column which can have up to 3 decimal places. I want the number to format with commas separating thousands and millions, but I also want the number of decimal places to be automatic, so that if there is no decimal portion then no decimal at all is shown. 1234.567 -> 1,234.567 1234.560 -> 1,234.56 1234.500 -> 1,234.5 1234.000 -> 1,234 General format will give me the auto decimal places but no commas. Standard format gives the comma but is fixed to 2 decimal places. Doing my own =Format(Number, "#,##0.#") leaves the decimal point in and doesn't align properly, with extra space on the right of the number. Do I have to write my own VB function to give the format I want? It seems silly that Access (apparently) can't do this out of the box.   • How to stop Excel 2003 from loading a Gazillion files

    One of my soon-to-be-ex-friends got an Excel file from another friend of his and decided to click on it. It started opening all kinds of files from within Excel. Over 200 and still counting when he called me. I told him to go to task manager, which showed a LOT of files in the applications tab, but only one Excel.exe in the processes tab. Closing it down there, closed down Excel. I then CrossLooped in to see if I could give him a helping hand. Each time Excel was re-opened, the mass influx of files started. They were all kinds of files, PDFs, Docs, JPGs, even some spreadsheets. It looked like the end of solitaire, with multiple windows opening (XP) and the counter on the lone Excel button on the task bar counting off the files. I did the task manager exit routine and went looking for temp files. I CrapCleaned out the system. Made sure I went through the files created in the last hour and deleted anything with a temp anywhere in it. I also deleted the crappy infected/corrupted file from it's place on the desktop (yeah, I know, I yelled for 15 minutes on THAT subject). Despite a delousing, the restart of Excel, which complained of a deactivated add-in, would start the cascading windows, whether I answered yes or no to that question. Yes, it knew it had a serious crash, but why would it just keep on trying to load the bad file, even when I got rid of it? But here's the real question. WHERE was it loading from? I went through the backup folder and NOTHING was there! So what's the process for starting Excel WITHOUT it trying to do a crash recovery? Sort of makes me feel stupid at times. My workstations are not working because they cannot resolve the domain controller name because of DNS. an ipconfig /all reveals that they know the IP of the DNS server is 10.76.4.11, but if I nslookup 10.76.4.11 it forwards the request to 10.4.36.10 and goes nowhere. I have since removed the forwarder, but still any nslookup requests on workstations are going to 10.4.36.10. If I nslookup 10.76.4.11 on the server it can resolve its name, but for some reason when it receives the same request from workstations it doesnt know what to do. All the A, CNAME records etc are correct. DHCP's DNS is set correctly, GPOs are correct (even though they cant refresh cos of this problem!), the servers network adapter has its DNS set to 10.76.4.11. Just don't know. Very confused.

    I have a client that has an IBM xSeries 345 eServer. Per the IBM support website, I have downloaded the ServerGuide Setup 7.4.17 installation ISO and burned a bootable CD. The CD boots fine and loads the utility. I walk through the following screens without any issue: Set the date and Time Detect the IBM ServeRAID card and install the latest firmware Clear the hard disks Set up the RAID array The next step is format the NOS partition. I select my partition size and the utility goes through the following steps: Creating NOS partition Formatting NOS partition (NTFS) Copying W32 files The copying W32 files takes about 10 minutes. I see the CD drive and disks working hard. When the copying is complete, I'm taken to a blank page just NOS Partitioning at the top. At the bottom of the screen are the familiar Back and Exit buttons. I see the place where the Next button should be, and if I click on it I can tell there is something there, but the space is empty. No button is displayed and clicking the empty spot doesn't ever take me to the next screen. I can't load the OS until I get past this part. I have already tried: Burning multiple copies and versions of the ServerGuide CD Letting the final screen just sit there over the weekend thinking it might advance after syncing the drives or something Has anybody else seen this?   • Error opening hyperlinks in Excel 2003

    When clicking to follow hyperlinks from Excel, I'm now getting this error: Unable to open http://blah... Cannot download the information you requested. The hyperlinks in the Excel file are created using the HYPERLINK() formula. I use Google Chrome as my default browser. The web site in question uses Basic Authentication, and I've entered correct credentials when prompted (the dialog looked like an IE auth box, not Chrome's, but it's always been that way, even when it was working properly). This hasn't been an issue until recently. I'm guessing our IT department made some lame change to IE's configuration that is causing Office to not be able to open the URLs, despite having Chrome as my browser. Things I've checked already: URLs are good, they work fine when pasted manually into Chrome, IE, or Firefox. IE is not set to Work Offline (already found that suggestion on Google). I checked Program Access and Defaults and verified that Chrome is selected. Nothing in the URL requires URLEncoding, so it's no goofy issue with encoding I've had reports from some other users now and then about the same problem, but this is the first time I've experienced it myself.

But now when I start Access I can't find the menu bars where I can usually see the File, Edit etc. I tried to restore the default, the menu bar can't be found under the customize toolbar.   • Server 2003 crashing intermittently, want to transfer function to other DC

    I have a Win2003R2 server that is intermittently crashing after some virus were introduced. I'm sure all virus have been cleaned thanks to Malwarebytes (were using McAfee - useless). When it crashes you can't login (local or remote) but can still access files remotely and ping it. After a while even file sharing stops and have to kill power to restart it (no BSOD) I need to either fix it (tried to reinstall SP2 and I tried to reinstall windows in repair mode but the repair option was not available when I booted from installation disks) or move it's functionality to another DC (another 2003R2 server). The server that's crashing is old with SCSI drives while the new server uses SATA drives and faster so it seems like a good idea to just transfer roles and ditch the old box. Finding replacement SCSI drives looks expensive if they ever fail. What would I need to transfer roles. If I just move the 5 FSMO roles and copy over the file shares. Would the new server have enough to run without the old server? Never done something like this, just want some tips. Thanks.

  • Windows 2003 DNS updates from ISC DHCP server

    We have a very mixed network, with most clients being Debian Lenny, the rest Windows XP/Vista/7. The network itself is split into two segments (for technical reasons) called "corporate" and "engineering". On the "corporate" side all clients get their IP addresses from a Windows DHCP server and the dynamic updates into the Windows DNS work just fine. On the "engineering" side, clients get their IP addresses from a linux machine running the standard ISC DHCP server. Although this server is configured to do dynamic DNS updates, they actually don't work. Anybody got any advice on how to fix this? Please note: dynamic updates from the clients directly into the DNS would work, but are not an option for us. So this is strictly on how make this work from an ISC DHCP server to a Windows DNS server.

    i know this is way too general question but anyway. I need few tools, will write down my tasks as sysadmin and if you have any to automate my job i would be glad to hear. I don't mind paying for software needed unless it is way too expensive. First of i backup all files on server at local/office storage. I 7zip all SQL backup files and then move them over network to centralized location and then FTP them from office PC which has no FTP server installed and cannot have one. Backups happen at 4AM at the morning thus i need to set time for compressing and afterward FTPing. Then i FTP all IIS web application as differentiation backup, same goes for VOD movies. Second tool i need is system monitor which will monitor all servers from themselves and from external location for CPU/Memory/Hard disk and other basic failures. This tool should able to execute Website address with parameters which will send me an email with all report on failure. Third tool i need is a way to get all Event Logs from 10 Windows based servers without accessing each any of them manually. If you know any solution, thanks in advance.

  • How do I change the format of group by data in Excel 2003 pivot tables

    I have a data that lists the value of a contract per contract number. So I've created a pivot table that counts the number of contracts valued at 0 - 10, 11 - 20, etc. I want to be able to format the group, e.g. $0 - $10, $11 - $20 I've tried formatting the underlying data as currency and formatting the column in the pivot table, but it still shows as 0 - 10, 11 - 20 Also I have a column in the pivot table that says Total which is the Count of the number of contracts in that range, i.e. Value Total 0 - 10 1 11 - 20 1 Its an autogenerated column heading that Excel put in. How do I change this to say Number of contracts. I want it changed because when I chart the pivot table, the series is called called Total :(

    I have a production server with it's cpu's running excessively high. Except in critical circumstances nobody is allowed to logon to servers during non maintenance times. I am looking for an application I can use to look at the processes on the remote server which include CPU % usage. An application like top. Windows native tasklist.exe doesn't show percentage, nor does sysinternals pslist.exe. Suggestions?

  • Cannot access domain from windows 2003 client

    Hey all, First off I am a novice at AD and DNS so please bear with me. This is my current situation: I have one server which is a DC and DNS server (win2k3) - Machine 1. I have another machine which is trying to join this domain - Machine2. This machine is also a win2k3 server. This is what I have done so far: I have setup DNS on the DC and its tcp/ip dns is pointing to itself. On machine2 I have set its dns to point to the dc. The DNS has been setup with a forward lookup zone with the same name as the domain (accdirect.com). I can ping machine1 from the machine2 by its FQDN and ip. I have set up forwarders on the DC for our ISP dns and can browse the internet on both machines. In the DNS mmc on the DC I can see a host (A) has been created for machine2. The problem is I still cannot join the domain. When I try join the domain via my computer - properties then it brings up the username/password box and after I go "ok" it says cannot find domain accdirect.com If I run this from machine2 dcdiag /s:accdirect.com /u:accdirect.com\admin /p: then I get the following: Performing initial setup: ** Warning: could not confirm the identity of this server in the directory versus the names returned by DNS servers. If there are problems accessing this directory server then you may need to check that this server is correctly registered with DNS [accdirect.com] Directory Binding Error 1722: Win32 Error 1722 This may limit some of the tests that can be performed. Done gathering initial info. On the dc all dcdiag and netdiag results pass. If anyone could help me I would really appreciate this!   • Need IPSec help on Windows 2003

    Hey guys, I am trying to configure IPSec between a web and app server in our environment. I want all traffic between these two servers to use IPsec and be encrypted. These servers are on the same domain so i am currently using Kerebos for security, I have also tried pre-defined keys and nothing changed. When I try and ping between the servers I get "Negotiating IP Security" everytime. I have also confirmed that when I change "Require Security" to "Permit" everything works so IPSec is working, I believe its something with my security setup. Under the security tab both servers have the default 3DES keys first and then DES keys. I have also specified tunnel endpoints (the alternate server's IP). What am I missing? Thanks for any help..

    I have a terminal server which works fine except for one thing: users are logged off after 2 hours, regardless of activity. I have Override user settings checked in the appropriate control window, and "End a disconnected session: Never" is set. But, I found the "Active session limit" is greyed out so I can't change it, and is set to 2 hours.
