• Server configurations for hosting MySQL database

  I have a web application which uses a MySQL database hosted on a virtual server. I've been using this server when I started the application and when the database was really small. Now it has grown and the server is not able to handle the db, causing frequent db errors. I'm planning to get a server and I need suggestions for that. Like I said, the db is now 9 GB, and is growing considerably fast. There are a number of tables with millions of rows, which are frequently updated and queried. The most frequent error the db shows is Lock wait timeout exceeded. Previously there used to be "The total number of locks exceeds the lock table size" errors too, but I could avoid it by increasing Innodb buffer pool size. Please suggest what configurations should I look for in the server I should buy. I read somewhere that the db should ideally have a buffer pool size greater than the size of its data, so in my case I guess I'd need memory gt 9 GB. What other things should I look for in the server? Just tell me if I should give you more info about the

• Recover mysql database - mysqldump gives "table <tablename> doesn't exist (1146)"

  Backstory Ubuntu died (wouldn't boot) and I couldn't fix it. I booted a live cd to recover the important stuff and saved it to my NAS. One of the things I backed up was /var/lib/mysql. Reinstalled with Linux Mint because I was on Ubuntu 10.0.4 this was a good opportunity to try a new distro (and I don't like Unity). Now I want to recover my old mediawiki, so I shut down mysql daemon, cp -R /media/NAS/Backup/mysql/mediawiki@002d1_19_1 /var/lib/mysql/, set file ownership and permissions correctly, and start mysql back up. Problem Now I'm trying to export the database so I can restore the database, but when I execute the mysqldump I get an error: $ mysqldump -u mediawikiuser -p mediawiki-1_19_1 -c | gzip -9 > wiki.2012-11-15.sql.gz Enter password: mysqldump: Got error: 1146: Table 'mediawiki-1_19_1.archive' doesn't exist when using LOCK TABLES Things I've tried I tried using --skip-lock-tables but I get this: Error: Couldn't read status information for table archive () mysqldump: Couldn't execute 'show create table `archive`': Table 'mediawiki-1_19_1.archive' doesn't exist (1146) I tried logging in to mysql and I can list the tables that should be there, but trying to describe or select from them errors out the same way as the dump: mysql> show tables; +----------------------------+ | Tables_in_mediawiki-1_19_1 | +----------------------------+ | archive | | category | | categorylinks | ... | user_properties | | valid_tag | | watchlist | +----------------------------+ 49 rows in set (0.00 sec) mysql> describe archive; ERROR 1146 (42S02): Table 'mediawiki-1_19_1.archive' doesn't exist I believe mediawiki was installed using innodb and binary data. • Database types for customer analytics

  I am exploring a paid solution to start providing better embedded, dashboard-style analytics information to our website customers/account holders, but would like to also offer an in-house development option to our team. The more equipped I am with specifics (such as the subject of this question), the better the adoption rate from the team (or so I have found), regardless of the path we choose Would anyone care to summarize a couple of options for a fast and scalable database type through which we would provide the following: • Daily pageviews to a users account pages (users have between 1 and 1000 pages) • Some calculated/compounded metrics (such as conversion rate, i.e. certain page type viewed to contact form thank you page ratio) • We have about 1,500 members (will need room to grow); the number of concurrently logged in users will for the question's sake be 50 I ask because our developer has balked at providing this level of "over time" granularity (i.e. daily) due to the number of space it would take up in a MYSQL database To avoid a downvote I have asked specifically for more than one option, realizing that different people will have different solutions. • How to conciliate OOAD and Database Design?

  Recently I've studied about object oriented analysis and design and I liked a lot about it. In every place I've read people say that the idea is to start with the minimum set of requirements and go improving along the way, revisiting this each iteration and making it better as we contiuously develop and contact the customer interested in the software. In particular, one course from Lynda.com said a lot of that: we don't want to spend a lot of time planing everything upfront, we just want to have the minimum to get started and then improve this each iteration. Now, I've also seem a course from the same guy about database design, and there he says differently. He says that although when working with object orientation he likes the agile iterative approach, for database design we should really spend a lot of time planing things upfront instead of just going along the way with the minimum. But this confuses me a little. Indeed, the database will persist important data from our domain model and perhaps configurations of the software and so on. Now, if I'm going to continuously revist the analysis and design of the model, it seems the database design should change also. In the same way, if we plan all the database upfront it seems we are also planing all the model upfront, so the two ideas seems to be incompatible. I really like agile iterative approach, but I'm also looking at getting better design for the database also, so when working with agile iterative approach, how should we deal with the database design?

• Implementation details of database synchronisation API

  I want to achieve a database synchronisation between my server database and a client application. The server would run MySQL and the applications may run different database technologies, their implementation isn't important. I have a MySQL database online and web accessible via an API I wrote in PHP (just a detail). My client application ships with a copy of the online data. As time passes my goal is to check for any changes in the online database and make these updates available to the client app via an API call, by sending a date to an API endpoint corresponding to the last date the app was updated, the response would be a JSON filled with all new objects and updated objects, and delete IDs, this makes possible to update the local store appropriately. Essentially I want to do this: http://dbconvert.com/synchronization.php My question is about the implementation details. Would I need to add a column to my database tables with a "last modified" date? Since the client app could be very out of date if it's been offline for a long time, does that also mean I shouldn't delete data from the online database but instead have another column called "delete" set to 1 and a modified date updated appropriately? Would my SQL query simply check for all data with a modified date superior then the date passed into the API request by the client? I feel like there's a lot more to it then having a ton of dates everywhere. And also, worry that I will need to persist a lot of old data in order to ensure that old versions of the client app always have the opportunity to delete parts of their data when they are able to sync.

  Preparation for the BIG interview: I prepared in both technical and logical aspects to face the Oracle Interview. I had to cover almost all main areas in technical and many types of problems in logical areas. We attended mock- interviews and written tests at our college, browsed websites and communities. Having started with such a rigorous preparation before Oracle visited the college; it was possible for me to make it into the list of final selection. I put in a big effort to reach this position and I am very happy to achieve this. Why I chose Oracle: Oracle is one of the best technology providers and has a large customer base. I think it is not an easy job to offer services to that many customers. So, the company needs young and dynamic people and I wanted to be one among them. This gave me spirit and led me to walk into Oracle. I am working on different technologies and learning something new in the field. Having many customers is challenging Oracle and my work is challenging me. I am confident enough that customers to both me and Oracle will never lose their faith. Learning at Oracle: The style of learning is good and never resembles a classroom session in a college. It is always fun to learn here. There is no exam to track the performance. There is enough time until we completely learn it. There is no concept of stiff competition. Peers help through KT (Knowledge Transfers) and there are good resources in the Oracle to learn. People are always there to direct you to those. There are lots of opportunities for Web learning too! My Work Area: My team gives me a great opportunity to offer service to the entire product. There were no situations when I got tense with my work or targets and deliverables. I work with a Global Team and my manager is based in the UK. I have a lot of freedom and flexibility. I use the work from home option in case of any disturbances in the city or due to personal problems. I have a weekly meeting with my manager and use Instant Messenger for status updates. My manager plans very well to give me enough time to complete tasks. I have good coordination from the team towards our deadlines. My work has also brought me close to many people across various technology and product teams. I am glad to make many friends across Oracle. I am enjoying my time and work here. I cover all the major activities in the team. I am thankful to everyone from the Development and Quality Assurance Team to have high confidence in me by assigning such big responsibilities. Primary tasks are maintaining the environments that are very unstable at times. This really requires big time and effort to trace the root causes. I am working and still learning on all these areas. The happiest thing is I got chances to travel to USA & UK for training and for supporting a few customer demo projects. I have got to explore more across two countries and got sponsored to visit the places around due to Oracle's policies. I am very much thankful for these what I have from Oracle and for the cooperation there from other colleagues. Fun at Work: Oracle has a club from Employees to conduct games and events. I had an opportunity to participate in competitions, tournaments inside Oracle and Inter-Corporate for all games. I thank Oracle for providing me all these opportunities and I would like to extend my thanks to Senior Management for their confidence in me. • Application passwords and SQLite security

  I have been searching on google for information regarding application passwords and SQLite security for some time, and nothing that I have found has really answered my questions. Here is what I am trying to figure out: 1) My application is going to have an optional password activity that will be called when the application is first opened. My questions for this are a) If I store the password via android preference or SQLite database, how can I ensure security and privacy for the password, and b) how should password recovery be handled? Regarding b) from above, I have thought about requiring an email address when the password feature is enabled, and also a password hint question for use when requesting password recovery. Upon successfully answering the hint question, the password is then emailed to the email address that was submitted. I am not completely confident in the security and privacy of the email method, especially if the email is sent when the user is connected to an open, public wireless network. 2) My application will be using an SQLite database, which will be stored on the SD card if the user has one. Regardless of whether it is stored on the phone or the SD card, what options do I have for data encryption, and how does that affect the application performance? Thanks in advance for time taken to answer these questions. I think that there may be other developers struggling with the same concerns.

• Could someone explain Spring Security BasePermission.Create?

  I am working on a project that involves Spring Security ACL and I came across the create permission BasePermission.CREATE. Would someone please explain how this is supposed to work or what it allows someone to do? It is my understanding that each object has an acl, and each acl has many ace's, and each ace has an sid and a permission. How can you grant permission on an object to create it, if it must be created in order to attach the acl to it?

• Can't work out security

  I installed Ubuntu on puter I am the only user I alone use. I was trying a to find out how to repair hardware faults. Surprised to find I was not the owner and that there is a password that locks me out. I only set one password during set up so what is this mysterious password. As far as I'm concerned it is overdone on security, Im sick of authenticating every 3 seconds. I need a simpler system

  Mit dem SüdLeasing Projekt e-Lease (electronic leasing process) wurde laut Dr. Buchacker eine maßgeschneiderte, exzellent ausbaufähige „Zukunftsplattform" geschaffen. Die Geschäftsprozesse des Unternehmens wurden gemeinsam mit Oracle und dem langjährigen Oracle Partner PROMATIS auf der neuen Plattform einheitlich abgebildet und verschlankt. Dabei wurden auch bestehende Legacy-Systeme einbezogen. Heute werden auf dieser Oracle basierten service-orientierten Architektur (SOA) die betrieblichen Abläufe automatisiert, optimiert und flexibel weiterentwickelt. Zunächst stand das Finanzdienstleistungsunternehmen vor der Herausforderung unternehmensweit die Durchlaufzeiten, die Kooperation und den Service durch Business Process Streamlining zu verbessern. Neben Einsparungen bei Aktenordnern, Ablagematerialien und bei der Archivierung sollten vor allem die Abteilungen „Markt" und „Marktfolge" mittels einer durchgängigen IT-Unterstützung der Arbeitsabläufe besser ineinander greifen. Parallel dazu beabsichtigte man durch sukzessive Entlastung der Mitarbeiter in den drei Haupt- und Bearbeitungsstandorten sowie in den 19 Vertriebsniederlassungen zusätzliche Kapazitäten zu gewinnen. • Security risks posed by specifying technologies used

  I am developing online tools for non-commercial use, which are hosted on dedicated hardware. I would like to include logos indicating the technologies I used (Apache or Python for example), at the bottom of the page. What are the security risks/implications, if any, of "advertizing" this information? It is better not to reveal that the web server is Apache, and that I used Pyhton and jQuery, for example?

  According to researcher Brian Krebs, millions of surfers were affected by the error which was caused by two of Microsoft's antivirus solutions in the form of Microsoft Security Essentials and the business-related Microsoft Forefront. Both received updates as part of Microsoft's traditional Patch Tuesday on February 14, and those patches are believed to be the cause behind Google's incorrect blacklisting.
