  Hi there some time ago(10 years back) I've read on PC Magazine that some mainboards have some settings which allow to a computer to open at a certain hour. I need to make my computer to wake me up in each morning. How can I do that ? What MB settings allow this feature? ps: i will like to shout down the computer during the night(not sleep or hibernate mode). ATM I'm using windows xp and 7 on my computers.

• PHP-FPM runs PHP scripts as root

  I have a web server setup using nginx and PHP-FPM listening on a Unix socket. In my php-fpm.conf, I have specified user = www group = www When I run ps aux, I can see that the php-fpm worker processes run as www; the php-fpm master process runs as root. However, I noticed that PHP scripts are executed as root; at least that's the output of echo get_current_user(); What can I do to run scripts as the www user? How can this even happen if the worker processes run as www?

• Hyper-V CPU Utilization, Good Tools?

  I just learned a ton from this post: Host CPU% doesn't include child VM CPU%, specifically I learned that both the 'host OS' and 'child VM' are siblings within the HyperVisor layer. Are there good utilities for 'watching' the total CPU and other resource counters at the HyperVisor (hardware) layer? I know perfmon (watching special Hyper-V CPU counters) is the standard answer, but I've stayed away from perfmon for ad-hoc monitoring. Is there a good OSS or free tools to 'watch' the resource utilization as I create multiple new VMs running on the server? I'm a developer, so if there aren't any good UI tools to surface this data I'd consider creating one, but only if needed. P.S. My specific scenario is I'm creating new web, SQL and back-end server VMs for new Windows 8 Server and SQL 2012 (entire application stack). I need to monitor them for utilization and know when I need to grow beyond 1 host (I'll need to split the VMs into separate hosts as I hit hardware limits of the 1st host, and diagnose problems).

• How does Apache handle port forwarding?

  I setup a localhost portforwarding configuration in the coLinux .conf file, forwarding port 8090 to port 80 in the VM. When http://localhost:8090 is entered in the browser, I get the correct response from nginx, but with Apache the response get the error /htdocs not found in the log. However if I do a local port forwarding from 8090 to port 80 via SSH Apache responds fine. Is there something about the way Apache handles the port redirection that causes it to fail? PS, For those unfamiliar with coLinux it allows localhost connections to get to the VM by forwarding localhost ports on the Windows host to ports on the VM, as the 10.x.x.x IP it not accessible from the Windows host.

  So I have several large text files I need to sort through, and remove all occurrences of lines which contain a given keyword. So basically, if I have these lines: This is not a test This is a test Maybe a test Definitely not a test And I run the script with 'not', I need to entirely delete lines 1 and 4. I've been trying with: PS C:\Users\Admin> (Get-Content "D:\Logs\co2.txt") | Foreach-Object {$_ -replace "3*Program*", ""} | Set-Content "D:\Logs\co2.txt" but it only replaces the 'Program' and not the entire line.

• Mac firewall blocking nginx (port 80) from external side

  I installed nginx using ports and started it with sudo. Accessing the nginx welcome page from localhost works perfectly, however accessing it from an external computer fails. Doing an nmap on the computer from the outside reveals 80/tcp filtered http So clearly the mac firewall is blocking the port. I then proceed to add the nginx executable to the firewall exception list as seen in this image, however the nmap still shows up as port 80 being filtered and I'm unable to access the webpage. The exact binary that is in the list is /opt/local/sbin/nginx which to my knowledge seems correct Any ideas what I should do? Thanks! P.S. Turning the firewall off does allow me to access the website from the outside world, however that isn't an ideal solution.

• Notepad++ tabbing out of tags, autocomplete

  I'm trying to learn a little HTML. Everyone says to use Notepad++ over notepad. I have autocomplete on. My question: When I type my opening tag and Notepad++ then puts"""" closing tag, how do I "jump" out of the tag when I'm done typing? If I tab or hit enter, I'm still stuck before the closing tag. I can use my arrow keys, but if I'm going to do that, I would rather just type the closing tags. Also if I have an UL of 10 items, and I want to change it to an OL, how do I select both the opening and closing tags so I may edit them at the same time?   Ctrl-c doesn't always work to kill the current process (for instance, if that process is busy in certain network operations). In that case, you just see "^C" by your cursor, and can't do much else. What's the easiest way to force that process to die now without losing my terminal? Summary of answers below: Usually, you can Ctrl-z to put the process to sleep, and then do "kill -9 process-pid", where you find the process's pid with 'ps' and other tools. On Bash (and possibly other shells) you can do "kill -9 %1" (or '%N' in general) which is easier. If Ctrl-z doesn't work, you'll have to open another terminal and kill from there.

• Postfix not delivering mails

  Hi all, I have problems with a recently configured postfix MTA. When postfix starts the following warning appears: "postfix/qmgr[5078]: warning: connect to transport private/filter: No such file or directory" I have amavis-new as a content-filter, but even if I comment-out the relevant line, the warning appears. As a result (I think), of the above, I get errors like below, for every virtual domain that I have: "postfix/error[5080]: 254851834107: to=, relay=none, delay=13082, delays=13082/0.01/0/0.01, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (mail transport unavailable)" The good news for me, is that somehow I managed to fix that (don't ask me how!!!!) The problem is that now I have 50 or so mails, that were affected by the aforementioned problem, in the mail-queue... If I "postqueue -f " I get the same style of error as before (mail transport unavailable)...however new mails are delivered to their final destination properly... Any suggestions? Kind regards. P.S. Local mail delivery from/to Unix and virtual users, was OK write from the beginning!

  When I signed up for my Debian Linux VPS hosting and first logged on and invoked ps, there was the only user process running: sshd. As I can see, this was minimal Linux with only two things installed and configured: sshd and apt (plus all dependencies, of course). I want to build (or use existing) similar Linux distro, any advice on how to build (or pick) one? Googling "minimum linux", or "linux with sshd only" usually brings up Debian's netinstall, which is not what I want. Thanks in advance.

• How to Create a shortcut to files / folders on a drive with different / changing letters (root)?

  I have seen this question asked and answered many times but the location one usually desires to create the shortcut is on the actual drive with the different letters. I would like to create the shortcut on the drive with the permanent letter. So, let me explain further. I have a C Drive and a G Drive. The C Drive is always C and it's on a Windows XP computer. The G drive may be G today, but H tomorrow. How can I create a permanently working shortcut on the C Drive that points to the G, sometimes H, external hard drive? P.S. I am referring to an external hard drive, but I would also (not instead) be interested in the answer if it were a usb flash drive. (Keep in mind the shortcut is being created on the drive with the permanent letter). Thanks.

• X server not starting up after new kernel compilation

  I have compiled the Kernel on my 64-bit Debian XPS Studio 1340 Dell system. srikanth@debian:~ - 05:40:52 PM - $ uname -a Linux debian 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Mar 22 17:26:33 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux Kernel version that I have used and compiled from kernel.org is 2.6.35.13 I have nvidia installed on old kernel. I got the old config and I used the same config to compile the new kernel. Everything went well and I got two debian packages ( image and headers ) which I have installed on my system. When I select the new kernel on the boot menu and I go into it, the X server is not starting up possibly because I have to "rebuild" ( not sure how to do that ) according to this link: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/x-server-not-starting-after-kernel-compilation-605265/ Can you suggest how to do the rebuild on nvidia module so that I can start x ( without seeing any blank screen or error saying nvidia module is missing ) ? • Can not access to my apache server remotely

  I have bought a VPS server, setted the apache server. But I could only access the webpage from local, I thought maybe the server did not recieveing access from outside. I tried Firefox, but the access_log shows nothing accessed. But telnet http://www.59lt.com 80 and type nonsence code, I recieved following error: and the access_log under /etc/httpd/logs also caught the acess, This proved that the server do access request from outside, so why it ignore the normal request from Firefox, but choosed to recieving request from telnet? • HDD not detected whenever first power on (detected at BIOS level)

  I am using Asus P8H61-M LX Motherboard with latest version of BIOS: 4401 One SATA-3 Western Digital Black Series 1.5TB is attached to SATA port 0 A Samsung 22x DVDRW SATA drive attached to SATA Port 1. ps/2 Logitech mouse and keyboard. CPU is i3 with DDR3 8Gb RAM. no other devices are installed. My problem is that when I turn on the computer, the WD HDD is not detected. ie cannot be booted. I have to press ctrl+alt+del in order to get it detected. I'd used the WD data lifeguard software to scan the HDD, the smart status is OK, the surface scan does not show any error at all. Where did I do wrong? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

• Can't boot after Deleted System Reserved Partition

  I accidentally deleted the System Reserved Partition and now I can no longer boot into Windows 7. The installation of Windows and all my files still exists in the partition, but without the System Reserved Partition I can no longer boot. After I deleted the System Reserved Partition I moved left the primary partition to fill the space. Is there any way I can "reinstall" that System Reserved Partition and the boot files? PS: I only have Windows 7 installed. No dual-boot nothing.

• Using mongodump with an auth enabled mongodb server

  I'm trying to do a daily backup of my mongodb server (auth enabled) using the mongodump tool. mongodump provides two parameters to set the credentials: -u [ --username ] arg username -p [ --password ] arg password Unfortunately they don't provide any parameter to read the password from stdin. Therefore everytime I run this command, everyone on the server can read the password (e.g. by using ps aux). The only workaround I have found is stopping the database and directly accessing the database files using the --dbpath parameter. Is there any other solution which allows me to backup the mongodb database without stopping the server and without "publishing" my password? I am using Debian squeeze 6.0.5 amd64 with mongodb 1.4.4-3.

Unfortunately, I have no possibility to find out the exact order, only relative one like: "hm, this photo was surely taken after this one" and organize them step-by-step by manually changing numbering again and again. • Windows 7 changes desktop icon location when switching from External Monitor to Internal Monitor (laptop)

  I have a Windows 7 Laptop, and lately its been acting really weird with my 1080p Monitor. When I get home from school, Ill plug my screen in, and close my laptop lid (which makes the laptop treat the Monitor as the primary and only screen). However it will move my desktop icons! This also happens when I remove / unplug the screen, as shown in the pictures. I hate this, as Im the kinda person who's use to every icon being in a set spot, and so am use to their location. Its a massive hassle to try and move the icons back to their original spot. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?   I have router Draytek Vigor 2100VG at home almost in the center of it. The farthest point at my home is my balcony, ~12m from it. I have constant wifi signal range problems with some of my devices, but not with others. Notebook Lenovo W510 - no problems Nokia Home Music - always on 10m - no problems Sony PS3 - always on 7m - no problems Sony tablet S - problems around 6m Sony PSP - problems around 8m Sony PS Vita - problems around 8m Nokia E63 - problems around 8m I'm curious why my Notebook don't have any problems even on the balcony? I guess it has better hardware or uses more power for transmission. This information is really important when you want to buy new device/computer, so my real question is: Can device wifi range can somehow be found/suggested from official hardware technical specification? If not Is there some web page with wifi range reviews?

• How to restore default iPod playlists on Amarok?

  I wanted to "reset" the collection on my iPod and ended up accidentally deleting, through Amarok, all the playlists, including the default ones like "Most Played" and "Highest Rated". Since these are dynamic playlists with a special meaning for iPod, I don't think creating new, normal playlists with the same name will bring their special behavior back. How do I restore them with the same dynamic functionality? Is there a way to do that on Amarok? Rhythmbox? GTKPod? Command line? P.S.: not entirely sure what the policy about iPod questions are, but this one in particular seems to me to be very computer-related because, although it's about interfacing with a device, everything has to be done on my computer, using standard PC libraries/programs, etc. If it's still off-topic, please point me to where I could post it.

• Burning iso images with wodim loses 2048 bytes at the end

  If I burn an iso image with: wodim -data dev=/dev/scd0 in.iso and then read it back out with: dd if=/dev/scd0 of=out.iso The resulting files are not identical, out.iso is 2048 bytes shorter then in.iso. What is going on here and how can I fix it? Using Ubuntu 10.04 and Wodim 1.1.10 PS: dd always ends with an Input/output error, not just with this CD, but with all of them. I think its just a limitation of dd, but an explanation why it happens and how to avoid it would be welcome as well.

• MapReduce job is hung after 1 of 5 reducers completed on single-node environment

  I have only one Data Node on my dev environment on EC2. I ran heavy MR job and in 6 hours noticed that 100% of mappers and 20% of reducers finished (1 of reducer shows 100% competition, other ones - 0%). Looks like job is hung between 2 reducer runs. I don't see any errors in log files. What it can be? P.S.
