• Digikam: What's the problem?

  I installed Digikam by using the Philip5-PPA. When I run it I get the error below. This is by running it through gdb: Starting program: /usr/bin/digikam /usr/bin/digikam: error while loading shared libraries: libcxcore.so.2.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory [Inferior 1 (process 29894) exited with code 0177] What should I do to find the error and fix it? I can see that somehow libcxcore.so.2.1 is wanted but not found. Is this an error of the PPA, or can I simply point it in the right direction? Can I raise an issue with the PPA creator through launchpad? Some next steps would be quite helpful.

• JAX-RS 2.0 Early Draft - Third Edition Available

  JAX-RS 2.0 Early Draft Third Edition is now available. This updated draft include new samples explaining the features and clarifications in content-negotiation, discovery of providers, client-side API, filters and entity interceptors and several other sections. Provide feedback to users@jax-rs-spec. Jersey 2.0, the Reference Implementation of JAX-RS 2.0, released their fourth milestone a few days ago as well. Several features have already been implemented there. Note, this is an early development preview and several parts of the API and implementation are still evolving. Feel like trying it out? Simply go to Maven Central (of course none of this is production quality at this point). The latest JAX-RS Javadocs and Jersey 2.0 API docs are good starting points to explore. Somewhere down the road years ago I did learn to play guitar and to play by ear at that.  Now that’s not all left brained so my right brain must be working.  About a year ago, my good friend Billy Hollis turned me own to a book by Betty Edwards (http://www.drawright.com/).  I started reading this and soon I found my self drawing on napkins in restaurants while we were waiting on food and at many other times too.  Dang’d if I could not draw! • In a SSL web application, what would be the vulnerabilities of using session based authentication?

  I'm not sure the term even exists, so let me explain what I mean by "session based authentication" through some pseudo-code: void PerformLogin(string userName, string password) { if(AreValidCredentials(userName, password)) { Session.Set("IsAuthenticated", true); } else { Message.Show("Invalid credentials!"); } } So the above method simply verifies the provided credentials are valid and then sets a session flag to indicate that the session user is authenticated. Under plain HTTP that is obviously unsafe, because anyone could hijack the session cookie/querystring and breach security. However, under HTTPS the session cookie/querystring is protected because client-server communication is encrypted, so I believe this authentication approach would be safe, wouldn't it? I'm asking this because I want to know how authentication tickets can improve web applications security. Thanks in advance!

  During one of my studies into the intricacies of C#, I came across an interesting passage concerning explicit interface implementation. While this syntax is quite helpful when you need to resolve name clashes, you can use explicit interface implementation simply to hide more "advanced" members from the object level. The difference between allowing the use of object.method() or requiring the casting of ((Interface)object).method() seems like mean-spirited obfuscation to my inexperienced eyes. The text noted that this will hide the method from Intellisense at the object level, but why would you want to do that if it was not necessary to avoid name conflicts?

• Lost the system tray-bar and side panel dockbar disappears when touched

  I have complete confidence that this problem will be resolved by restarting, however, it seems very odd that it should disappear randomly during my session. To put it simply, I've lost the top tray-bar and the side panel disappears when the mouse moves within touch, however if it click and drag the window by the side it comes back (but disappears instantly when touched again (however I can still click on the buttons where they should be). The only guess I have as to why it's happened is a bug, or I've lost a file these GUI things depend on. This is a real pain as some applications now have lost the "File, Edit" menu items as a result of this.

  Asynchronous non-blocking event driven programming seems to be all the rage. I have a basic conceptual understanding of what this all means. However what I'm not sure is when and where my code can benefit from being asynchronous, or how to make blocking IO, non-blocking. I'm sure that I can simply use a library to do this, but I'm more interested in more in depth concepts, and the various ways to implement it myself. Are there any comprehensive/definitive books, or other resources on this subject (like GoF for Design Patterns, or K&R for C, tldp for things like bash)? • How to organize continuous code reviews?

  We develop in branches. Before a branch gets merged into the main stream (master branch) we review the changes made, by creating a new "code review" in Crucible. Reviewers add their comments to the code review and the ticket/branch gets bounced back to the author, if it needs to be improved. After the improvements are made we get this branch/ticket again back to the code review. We again create a new code review in Crucible, loosing all previously made comments. We simply start from scratch. It's a big waste of time. Do you know any tools that support a continuous mode for reviews, where we don't need to start from scratch every time, but can pick up the comments already made (re-start the review, so to speak).

So to keep our sanity in the R&D/Engineering department, customers have become accustomed to coming to me with their requests. I have no experience in this realm so it is my first time acting as a project manager for software projects. I have managed other things but not software. So, how do you manage software projects and mark priorities? Requests come in at infrequent intervals so we very well could be working on something for someone else and then another person comes in with a "rush" job that needs working on. • WP7&ndash;Samsung Owners Should Hold Off on the Update

  Microsoft released an update for WP7 that’s meant to improve updating the devices going forward. They’ve identified a glitch though, specifically with Samsung phones. From Winrumors: A number of Windows Phone 7 users applied the patch on Monday and some Samsung Omnia owners devices have been left in a “bricked” state. Devices simply instruct users to connect them to a PC, hard resetting the device or connecting it to a PC does not appear to solve the issue. Microsoft has also been advising users with broken devices to return them to stores for exchange. The scary thing about this is the resolution: return the “broken” devices to stores for exchange. Many Samsung Focus owners in Canada purchased unlocked phones from the US, and supposedly that act alone voided the warranty. So applying the update has very dire implications for those who might be left with a very pretty brick. I’m going to wait until there are successful installs of the patched update before going ahead with it on my device.

• How do I set PATH variables for all users on a server?

  I just finished installing LaTeX for my company's Ubuntu server that we all SSH into to use. At the end of the install it says this: Add /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf/doc/man to MANPATH, if not dynamically determined. Add /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf/doc/info to INFOPATH. Most importantly, add /usr/local/texlive/2010/bin/x86_64-linux to your PATH for current and future sessions. So, my question is simply: How do I do this so that these variables are set for all users on the system? (And yes, I have sudo permissions). Thanks in advance to any and all responses I receive.

  I'm currently running a modified Wordpress site that is uniquely designed to simply publish links to other sites, similar to The Drudge Report. Right now I have a few dozen Google Alerts setup and go through each result manually and if it matches a few niche keywords I'm working with, then I add a link to the article to my site. I do the manual checking because sometimes Google Alerts finds links to sites that belong to service providers, organizations, or products, but all I want are mainstream news articles. • C++ Building Static Library Project with a Folder Structure

  I'm working on some static libraries using visual studio 2012, and after building I copy .lib and .h files to respective directories to match a desired hierarchy such as: drive:/libraries/libname/includes/libname/framework drive:/libraries/libname/includes/libname/utitlies drive:/libraries/libname/lib/... etc I'm thinking something similar to the boost folder layout. I have been doing this manually so far. My library solution contains projects, and when I update and recompile I simply recopy files where they need to be. Is there a simpler way to do this? Perhaps a way to compile the project with certain rules per project as to where the projects .h and .lib files should go?

  I've been struggling to get this working. I simply wish to take a surface normal and convert it to a screen angle. As an example, assuming we're working with the highlighted surface on the sphere below, where the arrow is the normal, the 2D angle would obviously be PI/4 radians. • Skip the first RenderTarget when writing to MRT with Opaque blending

  I am writing to three rendertargets and whant to know how to tell a GPU not to write to the first RT. When you write a shader you can simply output less data than you have RTs (like output a single float4 when writing to three RTs) and only the first RTs will be affected, but you cannot specify to output this data anywhere else but to COLOR0, then 1, etc. Is there a way to write to several RTs but skip the first target? If I output zeroes, the data in the target will become zeroes, but I need it to remain untuched in the first target and only change in the specified ones. The reason I need this is to prevent data loss when calling SetRendertarget() with DiscardContents RTs. I write to all the RTs at one point and I need to write to only the specified ones afterwards. It must be the first texture as I have a depth buffer linked to it (XNA 4.0). Thanks.

• How to "back track"?

  I find that I start projects and, due to my lack of experience, find that old database structures and huge blocks of code are inefficient and memory-costly. However, by the time I realize a re-design of the entire project is needed, the project has grown to such a size that it is simply too late to go back and modify the project in its current state and requires a completely new project file and the whole shebang. How should I prevent ruts such as this one, where it is too late to go back and modify the current project to fit specifications modified far down the road from the creation of the project? (Apologies in advance for confusing grammar, it's been a long day here... as you can probably tell.)
