• How can I map the docky anchor button so that it will launch the unity dash?

  Example of a Docky Dock I have the Docky dock on my desktop. It has an anchor logo button (as seen on the left side image of the link above) that brings up the Docky settings. I want to map it so that it opens my dash instead. I believe I can do this through gconf and by setting the docky button to either my super key or the necessary path required to open the dash function (but I do not know this path or how to code a button to a keyboard key). How can I map the docky anchor button so that it will launch the unity dash (as similar to when you simply tap the super key)?

• Surface normal to screen angle

  I've been struggling to get this working. I simply wish to take a surface normal and convert it to a screen angle. As an example, assuming we're working with the highlighted surface on the sphere below, where the arrow is the normal, the 2D angle would obviously be PI/4 radians. Here's one of the many things I've tried to no avail: float4 A = v.vertex; float4 B = v.vertex + float4(v.normal, 0.0); A = mul(VP, A); B = mul(VP, B); A.xy = (0.5 * (A.xy / A.w)) + 0.5; B.xy = (0.5 * (B.xy / B.w)) + 0.5; o.theta = atan2(B.y - A.y, B.x - A.x); I'm finally at my wit's end. • Ubuntu 14.04LTS - runtime video card configuration through Radeon driver

  How does one configure Radeon video cards when using the open source Radeon driver - power profile, vsync, etc? Why I try the widely documented solution (against overheating) that worked for me under LMDE (confirmed with kernels up to 3.12.6), I get the following error: $ sudo cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile default $ sudo sh -c "echo mid > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile" sh: echo: I/O error Exit 1 And when I try suggestions from Arch's ATI wiki my modifications are simply ignored: $ sudo cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level auto $ sudo sh -c "echo high> /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level" $ sudo cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level auto Is this something Ubuntu specific, or something introduced with the 3.13 version of the Radeon driver? I'm encountering this on 2 laptops, one with a Radeon HD6290 (integrated GPU), the other with a discrete RV710 card. The RV710 needs a specific power setting to prevent overheating under LMDE, fortunately it doesn't seem to overheat with the Ubuntu default setting.

• Ubuntu gone out of order - Wont install any packages. What do I do?

  Lately, I've been getting some strange behaviour from Ubuntu. First and the most important is that it wont install updates. It gives a package installation error and it simply wont work. Earlier I tried to install TeamViewer via the Software Center, but got the same package error. I also feel like the connection speed is going slower than it should - don't know if this one is relevant to this case. What's wrong with my installation? How do I fix these package installation errors?

• Why is using C++ libraries is so complicated?

  First of all, I want to note I love C++ and I'm one of those people who thinks it is easier to code in C++ than Java. Except for one tiny thing: libraries. In Java you can simply add some jar to the build path and you're done. In C++ you usually have to set multiple paths for the header files and the library itself. In some cases, you even have to use special build flags. I have mainly used Visual Studio, Code Blocks and no IDE at all. All 3 options do not differ much when talking about using external libraries. I wonder why was there made no simpler alternative for this? Like having a special .zip file that has everything you need in one place so the IDE can do all the work for you setting up the build flags. Is there any technical barrier for this?

• Large resolution differences

  I want to develop a game on multiple devices such as PC, Android or IOS. Want it to be in 1080p, but that means a massive scale down for the smartphones. I know how to do that, just render everything on a 1080p rendertarget and then render it on the screen smaller. But what should I do so that the scalling down doesn't look bad and blury? I can't do it vector based or anything because the sprites simply need a specific size. Should I make the sprites power of two size to get some nice mipmapping? And which other settings can I do? Or should I rather go with a lower resolution but then having a little bit worse look PC version? The performance seems not to be a problem for me, so would be sad not using 1080p because of other problems.

• How do i set CTRL not to show where the pointer is?

  After recently re-installing, i went through every System Setting and choose exactly how i wanted everthing to be. Except one thing. I'd never seen the Show Cursor on CTRL value before, and wanted to know what it was like. After a while it was simply annoying, whenever i paste of cut in chrome it takes the focus off of the text before i can press V. I have been through eveything in System Settings and can't find it again to disable it. How do i set CTRL not to pulse around the cursor? I will be happy with directions in System Settings, Ubuntu Tweak, or GConf.

• How to "back track"?

  I find that I start projects and, due to my lack of experience, find that old database structures and huge blocks of code are inefficient and memory-costly. However, by the time I realize a re-design of the entire project is needed, the project has grown to such a size that it is simply too late to go back and modify the project in its current state and requires a completely new project file and the whole shebang. How should I prevent ruts such as this one, where it is too late to go back and modify the current project to fit specifications modified far down the road from the creation of the project? (Apologies in advance for confusing grammar, it's been a long day here... as you can probably tell.)

• How to easily delete all email forwarders in cPanel?

  I know that I can import a list of email forwarders using CPanel, but how can I delete a list? I want to manage 300+ addresses - as a membership list for my organization. I want to be able to delete that many without clicking 'Delete' and then 'Confirm' (or whatever it is) 300 times. Even if I am able to simply delete ALL forwarders, then upload a modified list - that's fine with me. Note: I'm using a shared hosting package through SiteGround. The tech service rep informed me that I can't use CPanel scripts in a shared environment. Any suggestions?

• How can I get wireless working on an HP-Mini 110-3150?

  I just got an HP Mini 110-3150, and booting from an external hard disk with Ubuntu 10.10 works all fine, except that there is no wireless detected. I noticed that the Wireless indicator is red under Ubuntu, but is enabled under whatever Windows 7 I got on it. So, I understand that it may not get detected at all by Ubuntu at startup time, and there is no manual switch that I can simply slide to turn on/off. How can I get the Wireless device turned ON by default at startup time, and is there any special driver I need to install (proprietary or not) to get it working ? Merci :-) Update: When actually installing on the computer, as a new install, the NIC is not detected at first, but upon restarting, I get a notification of a closed driver available for the wireless. Once installed, updated and restarted, it works fine.

  So one of the main reasons I migrated to Ubuntu 12.04 from Windows 7 was to be able to have more control over my system due to the flexibility and customizability of a Linux operating system. However, with Ubuntu I do not feel as if I am as in control as I can be. What I mean to say is, where are the source codes and everything for all of this that I can edit on my machine. For example, suppose I want to position my dock on the left to be on the right without wanting to install any new software. I simply want to see the GUI files and reposition it myself.   Based on what I have read about Google's recent Panda and Penguin updates, I'm getting the impression that using semantic markup may help improve SEO results. On a EMD (exact match domain) site, that may have been hit, we list location-based products. We are now going to be adding a itemtype="http://schema.org/Product" to each product, with relevant details. However, that product may be available in Los Angeles and also in appear in a Seattle results page. We could add a LocalBusiness item type on each geo page to define the geo location for that page. While the definition states: A particular physical business or branch of an organization. Examples of LocalBusiness include a restaurant, a particular branch of a restaurant chain, a branch of a bank, a medical practice, a club, a bowling alley, etc. We could add use the location property which would simply include the city/state details. I realize that this looks like it is meant for a physical location, however could this be done without seeming black-hat?

• Is the "App" side of Windows 8 practical for programmers?

  I like the tablet-friendliness of Windows 8 Apps, and some of the programming apps seem pretty neat, but there are many aspects that make me think I would have difficulty using this format for an efficient programming environment: Unlike the desktop + multiple windows setup, I can't simply drag my files around from source, to FTP or SFTP file managers, between folders, web applications, and into other apps, etc. I can't switch between apps as fast. This could have different implications with different monitor setups, but it seems like a shaky setup for an agile workflow. The split screen functionality is cool, but it doesn't seem to allow for as much maneuverability as the classic desktop setup. This could just require me getting used to the top-left corner shortcut, but it does bother me that I have to move my mouse all the way up there to see my different windows. These aspects could become relevant in the event that Windows were to move further towards their "app" structure and less towards the Windows 7 style. I'm wondering if anyone has been able to utilize the "App" side of Windows 8 for an efficient programming workflow.

• Directory paths for resources and assets

  If I have a file stucture for my final, released game something like: Main folder Media Images Other assets Sounds Executable List item And a different one for my 'in development' project, with the same Media folder but: Main Source and .obj, etc. Media with everything Bin folder with executable I obviously cannot hardcode file pathnames into this, like: "../Media/Image/evilguy.png" or "Media/Image/foo.jpg" because they wouldn't work with one of the builds and would require a lot of switching names. Instead, does it make sense for my resource manager, that loads everything, to have some kind of prefix path? Then, I can just do Get("foo.jpg") or Get("Sounds/boom.ogg") And simply switch out, for the final release, the ctr argument from the relative path for the development build to the release layout? If not, how have other people sorted these sorts of things out?

  I keep seeing people wanting to do this (or something very similar) and then being surprised at how much it might cost them if they went with Windows Azure. Time for a Q&A. Short answer: No, definitely not. Madness, sheer madness. (Hopefully that was clear enough) Longer answer: No because It would cost you a heck of a lot more than just about any other approach to running a blog. A site that can easily be run on a shared hosting solution (as many blogs do today) does not require the rich capabilities of Windows Azure. Capabilities such as simplified deployed and management, dedicated resources, elastic resources, “unlimited” storage etc. It is simply not the type of application the Windows Azure Platform has been designed for. • Periodic clicking sound from PC speaker

  After an update some months ago, my laptop has begun making a low, repeated clicking sound every few seconds. It is not being generated through the regular sound system, as altering the volume and even muting the sound does not make any difference. My regular audio works fine, by the way, so I am guessing this is some sort of PC speaker, since I cannot hear the click when I listen through regular headphones. Strangely, when I open the sound settings dialog the click magically disappears. I don't need to change any settings; if I simply leave the dialog open in the background then the problem disappears. Any ideas what this could be?   The incorrect usage could lead to hard-to-debug problems so better to understand the fundamentals behind it's working.setpropertyListener queues an event on the server side, so if for a command component you have a showPopup behavior/actionListner as well as setPropertyListener then fwk does the queuing correctly and raises further event on the component. While, the setactionListener simply raises an event on the server side instead of queueing it, so any further event on command component gets cancelled.Also, if you use an ActionListener and showPopup behavior together on a command component, then the order of their invocation is undetermined and also one of event gets cancelled on the component. So, either use only actionListner and do the popup invocation stuff progrmmatically in your bean or use the declarative stuff logically so that no clash of event happens.

  I am quite sick of a Win7 limited edition that was pre-installed on my Acer Aspire One 533. I want to have Ubuntu as the only OS on this little thing. I have tested Ubuntu on a pretty unstable system and I am simply in love with it, despite the fact that I am still on the learning path. So my questions is how do I format/erase all previous info, including windows files? I am interested in a real cleanup of the drives rather than just a re-partitioning, because I travel every now and then and I want to prevent any personal data remaining on the drives for anyone with recovery knowledge to sniff through. • Purchase existing domain and transfer to new registrar

  I am purchasing an existing domain from the owner who has it registered with GoDaddy. I want to transfer the domain to another registrar and of course have it under my name. If they update the registrant info to my name then it will lock down for 60 days. That's no good. If they simply transfer it to my registrar, how will they update the registrant info? I know about escrow services, but I don't feel I need one because I trust the seller and the amount is (relatively) small. Advice? Thanks!

• Bluetooth mouse contstantly failes to reconnect after sleep

  It seems the bluetooth subsystem shows some bugs after the upgrade to 13.10. It was working quite happily at 13.04. The bluetooth mouse I have, simply won't connect after the computer goes into any sort of sleep and has to be re-added each and every time. Sometimes the the entire bluetooth stack has vanished alltogether. What changed with the bluetooth between these versions, that may cause this? This is a fresh install of Kubuntu I'm using (bluedevil) no an upgrade, but the same hardware as 13.04 was happy on. • Access Control Service v2

  A Resource-STS (others call it RP-STS or federation gateway) is a necessity for non-trivial federated identity scenarios. ADFS v2 does an excellent job in fulfilling that role – but (as of now) you have to run ADFS on-premise. The Azure Access Control Service is a Resource-STS in the cloud (with all the usual scalability/availability) promises. Unfortunately a lot of (the more interesting) features in ACS v1 had to be cut due to constrained time/resources. The good news is that ACS v2 is now in CTP and brings back a lot of the missing features (like WS* support) and adds some really sweet new ones (out of the box federation with Google, Facebook, LiveID – and OpenId in general). On a related note – ACS v2 works out of the box with StarterSTS – simply choose the ADFS v2 option and point the management portal to the StarterSTS WS-Federation metadata endpoint. Have fun ;)
