  • Is it possible to interrupt or cancel the trash-delete process?

    I am connected to the company server, onsite not remote, which is Windows based. When, in the OS finder, I go to delete a file or directory that resides on the window-based server, the trash progress panel appears as usual. Not infrequently it will just hang there appearing to be active but no progress occurs on the progress bar. So the X is chosen to stop or cancel the process. A new panel appears, and while appearing to be active, again, just hangs there indefinitely. My lack of reputation prevents posting a screen shot - sorry. The question then is this: Is there a way via the Activity Monitor, Terminal, etc. to interrupt this deleting process in the Mac OS? Currently, I have to force shutdown and reboot to eradicate the ever-deleting panel. Finder relaunch does not solve and only eliminates the finder until I force reboot. Any assistance is appreciated.   • java compiler error: Can't open input server /Library/InputManagers/Inquisitor

    Hi I am trying to compile helloWorld in java under snow leopard and I get this compiler error: java[51692:903] Can't open input server /Library/InputManagers/Inquisitor It happens when I am using terminal command javac and when I am trying do this in NetBeans. I was trying to open folder "Inquisitor" but I have no access to folder , even if I login as root user. Any clue what is going on? thanks.

  • Trouble upgrading OS X, because HD doesn't use GUID Partition Table Scheme

    So I have a MacBook with Mac OS X 10.5 and I'm trying to upgrade to 10.6, but when I run the upgrade 'install' I quickly get to a page where I am supposed to 'Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X' and there is only the one hard drive, so it is auto selected, and below that I see a warning message and the only button available is the 'Go Back' button. The warning message says: "Macintosh HD" can't be used because it doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme. Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme. Select the disk, choose the Partition tab, select the Volume Scheme and then click Options. So I followed the above instructions, and I got to the last step, where I'm supposed to click the 'Options' button, the problem is that I cannot click that button, it is disabled.. So what am I supposed to do?

  • OS X Enclosing folder shortcut?

    This may have been asked before, but I'm wondering whether there is a shortcut for navigating to the enclosing folder in OS X (Snow Leopard)? I find navigating Finder particularly frustrating since it's hard navigating back to the enclosing folder (especially when you jump to a folder and realize the back button is disabled)... I'm hoping for something other than Command+Up, since that's the key combination I use to navigate Spaces.

  • Run QuickTime from command line to export video

    I have a bunch of avi's I am converting to m4v, and I can do this in QuickTime by opening the video and then go 'Save As', select a folder, select the type (iPhone, Movie, etc), blah blah blah. But I have around 100 videos I want to do this with. Command line options? Or batch processing options in the GUI? Enlighten me, please. This is QuickTime X on Snow Leopard.

  • ScreenShare: command line and observe only.

    Hi, I have a wide TV screen that is attached to a Mac Mini. I am able to use this screen as a second screen using an application like ScreenRecycler. However, Sometimes I want to demonstrate what I am doing on my box on this TV screen. As this TV is attached to a Mac Mini, I want to have a screen sharing done reversed. As I know screen share can be done in observe mode and full screen, this would be more than sufficient. Because it would be pretty useless to run it continuously, I want it on demand. For this, I want to use SSH. So the only thing I would like to know is, how do I start screen sharing in from a Terminal Session. On Windows, I could start an application by using "start notepad.exe", I am looking for something similar. Eventually, I want to make this work on other boxes too. Thanks for your help!

  • Moving the OS X swap file to a faster drive

    I have a new Mac Mini that's running the latest version of Snow Leopard. The internal drive is a bit of a slouch. I'd like to move the swap file (or whatever it's called is OS X) to my faster external drive (Firewire 800, permanently connected). Is this possible? I've read that the old solutions aren't working in 10.6. My Mac has 2GB of RAM, so the swap file is used quite a bit when I'm doing intensive work (Photoshop etc).

  • Get rid of drop down cc-bcc-reply-to field when composing in Mail?

    Is there any way to get rid of the drop down cc bcc reply-to etc. field menu in the compose new message window in Mail in Mac OS X Snow Leopard? The offending menu is the one immediately to the left of the Subject field when composing a new message, and it interrupts me as I try to tab from To: to Subject: to the message body. If you know of any way to be rid of it, I'd be very grateful. Thanks!

  • Getting error code -41 when copying files to external drive

    I'm having trouble copying some files from my mac to an external hard drive: I keep getting the nondescript "error code -41". I noticed some of the files with an additional "@" permission bit had the "com.apple.quarantine" flag set. I used the "xattr" command from this article What should I do about com.apple.quarantine? to take care of the quarantine flag and sort that out (these files were copied over from another mac on my network, so I guess OS X flagged them as quarantine). That took care of the problem for those files but I still have some that I can't manually copy over to the external drive. The only other thing I've noticed is that some of these files have a an extra permission bit: "drwxr-xr-x+" which I haven't been successful in googling. Aside from that I don't see anything else. Also, Disk Utility says everything's fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, I'm currently using an win 7 as an network server at my home. I've created some shared folders wich can be accessed easily from any pc on my network (win and mac computers) recently I decided to turn on the win 7 pptp to access remotely to my server from anywhere. the problem is with that on, on my router my server ip change, acording to my ipconfig on the cmd my router gets the ip from a "PPP adapter RAS (dial in)". when that happens I cannot access to the shared files over the lan on my mac, but i can connect to the vpn but again can't access to my files. (i've tried connecting to the vpn from another network and it worked, even the file share) anyone can help me? thanks

    Here's the story: Company bought me a $599 Mac mini (as of this writing, 2.26GHz/160GB HD/2GB RAM) I have it set up to some extent with software for development Company decides it needs a second Mac for QA I convince company to buy the $799 Mac mini for the second machine (as of this writing, 2.53GHz/320GB HD/4GB RAM), let me have it for development, and let QA have the $599 Mac mini Company does just that, now I have both So, what's the best way to move from one of these to the other? Just set up everything on the second one and be done with it? Can I transfer things from the first to the second somehow? I'm running Time Machine backups to an external drive on the $599 Mac mini, if that helps. Also both of these will be on the network at the same time, other than renaming one of the machines are there considerations to be had there?

  • Viruses on external hard drive -- how to clean files?

    Last year my Dell laptop caught some pretty nasty viruses; I saved all my important stuff on an external hard drive. In an unrelated turn of events, I replaced my Dell with a Mac and have been able to retrieve data from the hard drive without trouble. The problem is, I'm sure the hard drive has a few lingering viruses and I really don't want to infect any more PCs with it. I was planning to reformat it anyway, but I'd like to be able to save my files. Would transferring those files to my Mac and then scanning them for Windows viruses before throwing them back onto the newly reformatted hard drive be enough?

    Background: My intention was to load a Virtual Machine (VM) on my Mac OS X Snow Leopard. My Mac had just enough room for a VM (my thought process was that VM was the same as partition) However, I burned the newest version of Ubuntu onto a CD, thinking that partitioning and running a virtual machine would be the same. I would restart my computer, booting up Ubuntu installer. The installation would not allow me to partition, forcing me to force shutdown my laptop. when I turn on my laptop, I see that my computer is "missing operating system". So, can someone help me fix my a) bootcamp, b) getting files and if a and b are fixed c) to install ubuntu as a VM?

  • Problems building nodejs on MacOS Snow Leopard

    I am having trouble building nodejs on MacOS Snow Leopard. I think it might have something to do with my PATH variable not being set correctly for the developer tools location. For some reason, the Developer tools (gcc, g++, make etc) are all stored in /Developer/usr/bin I added it to my PATH variable as follows: $ export PATH=$PATH:/Developer/usr/bin $ echo $PATH /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/Developer/usr/bin When i try to configure it complains about not finding open-ssl, ok, not a big problem. So I try with --without-ssl : $ ./configure --without-ssl Checking for program g++ or c++ : /Developer/usr/bin/g++ Checking for program cpp : /Developer/usr/bin/cpp Checking for program ar : /usr/bin/ar Checking for program ranlib : /Developer/usr/bin/ranlib Checking for g++ : ok Checking for program gcc or cc : /Developer/usr/bin/gcc Checking for gcc : ok Checking for library dl : yes Checking for library util : yes Checking for library rt : not found --- libeio --- Checking for library pthread : yes Checking for function pthread_create : not found /Users/Guy/git_src/node/node/deps/libeio/wscript:13: error: the configuration failed (see '/Users/Guy/git_src/node/node/build/config.log') Anyone know how I can get round this?
