    Today Microsoft has released a new cumulative update for SQL Server 2008 SP3. KB article: KB #2771833 There are 9 fixes listed at the time of writing The build number is 10.00.5828.00 Relevant for @@VERSION between 10.00.5500 and 10.00.5827 It seems clear that Service Pack 2 servicing has been discontinued. So there is even less reason to hold onto those old builds, and every reason to upgrade to Service Pack 3 .   • Keeping remote files synced with local files?

    Hello, When developing web applications, how does one keep local files and remote files synced together? There is the obvious way, whenever you edit a file on your local machine, just upload that file to the remote machine. Is there a more efficient way? I ask because I have been using subversion control, and it is so easy to keep files synced on a remote server. All I have to do is "commit" and it will find the files which need to be replaced.

  • SQL Server 2008 - Error starting service - model.mdf not found?!

    my SQL server 2008 was running fine. About an hour ago, it suddenly stopped - the MSSQLSERVER service had stopped I right clicked, clicked start, and it said the service had started, and stopped I looked in the event log and saw these two errors: 17207 : udopen: Operating system error 3(error not found) during the creation/opening of physical device C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\model.mdf. 17204 : FCB::Open failed: Could not open device C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\model.mdf for virtual device number (VDN) 1. The model.mdf db has NEVER been in that location - i specified drive F: to use for data / log during install. I checked the SQL Configuration Manager, to try and set startup params, but SQL Server is not listed as one of the services..... EDIT: I've now moved the db to where it was looking for: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\ directory. Now if I start the service, it still does not work - i get this error message in the log: Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 3, object ID 1, index ID 1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes. Interestingly, i checked the error log - around the time users reported problems, there is this: 2010-01-08 17:11:26.44 spid51 Configuration option 'show advanced options' changed from 0 to 1.   • Ubuntu-one syncs single files, but not directories [closed]

    I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, fully updated. I have tried to sync my ~/Documents and ~/Pictures folders; U1 replicates the directory structure, but no files are uploaded. Next I tried to sync a single file inside ~/Ubuntu One and it was synced. Then I tried to put a directory inside ~/Ubuntu One and, again, the directory structure was replicated, but no files were synced. All the files have the "syncing" icon, however.   • Cannot connect to a 2008 sql server named instance hosted in a azure virtual machine

    When I try to connect to a named instance in a SQL SERVER hosted in a azure VM I get this message: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1) The problem is the sql browser is not working properly, when I start the sql browser service it closes after a few seconds and the event log says "There are no instances of SQL Server or SQL Server Analysis Services." But I do have a named instance, I can connect locally to this instance. I've re-installed sql browser and the instance but ii does not work. The host is a azure virtual machine windows server 2008 datacenter. Please help. Thank you

  • Difference between SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 for inserting multiple rows with XML

    I am using the following SQL code for inserting multiple rows of data in a table. The data is passed to the stored procedure using an XML variable : INSERT INTO MyTable SELECT SampleTime = T.Item.value('SampleTime[1]', 'datetime'), Volume1 = T.Item.value('Volume1[1]', 'float'), Volume2 = T.Item.value('Volume2[1]', 'float') FROM @xml.nodes('//Root/MyRecord') T(item) I have a whole bunch of unit tests to verify that I am inserting the right information, the right number of records, etc.. when I call the stored procedure. All fine and dandy - that is, until we began to monkey around with the compatibility level of the database. The code above worked beautifully as long as we kept the compatibility level of the DB at 90 (SQL 2005). When we set the compatibility level at 100 (SQL 2008), the unit tests failed, because the stored procedure using the code above times out. The unit tests are dropping the database, re-creating it from scripts, and running the tests on the brand new DB, so it's not - I think - a question of the 'old compatibility level' sticking around. Using the SQL Management studio, I made up a quick test SQL script. Using the same XML chunk, I alter the DB compat level , truncate the table, then use the code above to insert 650 rows. When the level is 90 (SQL 2005), it runs in milliseconds. When the level is 100 (SQL 2008) it sometimes takes over a minute, sometimes runs in milliseconds. I'd appreciate any insight anyone might have into that. EDIT The script takes over a minute to run with my actual data, which has more rows than I show here, is a real table, and has an index. With the following example code, the difference goes between milliseconds and around 5 seconds. --use [master] --ALTER DATABASE MyDB SET compatibility_level =100 use [MyDB] declare @xml xml set @xml = '<?xml version="1.0"?> <Root xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Record> <SampleTime>2009-01-24T00:00:00</SampleTime> <Volume1>0</Volume1> <Volume2>0</Volume2> </Record> ..... 653 records, sample time spaced out 4 hours ........ </Root>' DECLARE @myTable TABLE( ID int IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [SampleTime] [datetime] NOT NULL, [Volume1] [float] NULL, [Volume2] [float] NULL) INSERT INTO @myTable select T.Item.value('SampleTime[1]', 'datetime') as SampleTime, Volume1 = T.Item.value('Volume1[1]', 'float'), Volume2 = T.Item.value('Volume2[1]', 'float') FROM @xml.nodes('//Root/Record') T(item) I uncomment the 2 lines at the top, select them and run just that (the ALTER DATABASE statement), then comment the 2 lines, deselect any text and run the whole thing. When I change from 90 to 100, it runs all the time in 5 seconds (I change the level once, but I run the series several times to see if I have consistent results). When I change from 100 to 90, it runs in milliseconds all the time. Just so you can play with it too. I am using SQL Server 2008 R2 standard edition.

  • Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

    Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process.   • Editing a 9gb .sql file

    Hi. I've got a "slightly" large sql script saved as a textfile. It totals in at 8.92gb, so it's a bit of a beast. I've got to do some search and replaces in this file(specifically, change all NOT NULL to NULL, so all fields are nullable) and then execute the darned thing. Does anyone have any suggestions for a text editor that would be capable of this? The other way that I can see to solve the problem is to write a program that reads a chunk, does a replace on the stuff I need, and then save it to a new file, but I'd rather use some standard way of doing this. It also does not solve the problem of opening the beast up in sql server management studio to execute the darned thing... Any ideas? Thanks, Eric

  • PowerShell to fetch a SQL Execution Plan

    With PowerShell becoming the scripting language of choice for many people, I’ve occasionally wondered about using it to analyse execution plans. After all, an execution plan is just XML, and PowerShell is just one tool which will very easily handle xml. The thing is – there’s no Get-SqlPlan cmdlet available, which has frustrated me in the past. Today I figured I’d make one. I know that I can write T-SQL to get an execution plan using SET SHOWPLAN_XML ON, but the problem is that this must be the only statement in a batch. So I used go, and a couple of newlines, and whipped up the following one-liner: function Get-SqlPlan([string] $query, [string] $server, [string] $db) { return ([xml] (invoke-sqlcmd -Server $server -Database $db -Query "set showplan_xml on;`ngo`n$query").Item( 0)) } (but please bear in mind that I have the SQL Snapins installed, which provides invoke-sqlcmd) To use this, I just do something like: $plan = get-sqlplan "select name from Production.Product" "." "AdventureWorks" And then find myself with an easy way to navigate through an execution plan! At some point I should make the function more robust, but this should be a good starter for any SQL PowerShell enthusiasts (like Aaron Nelson) out there.

    In SQL Server you can create users using T-SQL or using the options provided by SQL Server Management Studio.   CREATE LOGIN sql_user WITH PASSWORD ='sql_user_password' MUST_CHANGE, DEFAULT_DATABASE = defDB, CHECK_EXPIRATION = ON, CHECK_POLICY = ONAs mentioned in the previous article (http://weblogs.asp.net/cabhilash/archive/2010/04/07/login-failed-for-user-sa-because-the-account-is-currently-locked-out-the-system-administrator-can-unlock-it.aspx) when CHECK_POLICY = ON user account follows the password rules provided in the system on which the SQL server is installed. When MUST_CHANGE keyword is used user is forced to change the password when he/she tries to login for the first time. CHECK_EXPIRATION and CHECK_POLICY are only enforced on Windows Server 2003 and later. If you want to turn off the password expiration enforcement or security policy enforcement, you can do by using the following statements.
