  • DirectX: Render to a screen buffer without using a render target

    - by knight666
Hello, I'm writing an open source 2D game engine, and I want to support as many devices and platforms as possible. I currently only have Windows Mobile though. I'm rendering using DirectX Mobile, with DirectDraw as a fallback path. However, I've run into a bit of trouble. It seems that while the reference driver supports createRenderTarget, many many many physical devices do not. I need some way to render to the screen without using a render target, because I render sprites using textured quads, but I also need to be able to draw individual pixels. This is how I do it right now: // save old values if (Error::Failed(m_D3DDevice->GetRenderTarget(&m_D3DOldTarget))) { ERROR_EXPLAIN("Could not retrieve backbuffer."); return false; } // clear render surface if (Error::Failed(m_D3DDevice->SetRenderTarget(m_D3DRenderSurface, NULL))) { ERROR_EXPLAIN("Could not set render target to render texture."); return false; } if (Error::Failed (m_D3DDevice->Clear( 0, NULL, // target rectangle D3DMCLEAR_TARGET, D3DMCOLOR_XRGB(0, 0, 0), // clear color 1.0f, 0 ) ) ) { ERROR_EXPLAIN("Failed to clear render texture."); return false; } D3DMLOCKED_RECT render_rect; if (Error::Failed(m_D3DRenderSurface->LockRect(&render_rect, NULL, NULL))) { ERROR_EXPLAIN("Failed to lock render surface pixels."); } else { m_D3DBackSurf->SetBuffer((Pixel*)render_rect.pBits); m_D3DRenderSurface->UnlockRect(); } // begin scene if (Error::Failed(m_D3DDevice->BeginScene())) { ERROR_EXPLAIN("Failed to start rendering."); return false; } // ===================== // example rendering // ===================== // some other stuff, but the most important part of rendering a sprite: device->SetTexture(0, m_Texture)); device->SetStreamSource(0, m_VertexBuffer, sizeof(Vertex)); device->DrawPrimitive(D3DMPT_TRIANGLELIST, 0, 2); // plotting a pixel Surface* target = (Surface*)Device::GetRenderMethod()->GetRenderTarget(); buffer = target->GetBuffer(); buffer[somepixel] = MAKECOLOR(255, 0, 0); // end scene if (Error::Failed(device->EndScene())) { ERROR_EXPLAIN("Failed to end scene."); return false; } // clear screen if (Error::Failed(device->SetRenderTarget(m_D3DOldTarget, NULL))) { ERROR_EXPLAIN("Couldn't set render target to backbuffer."); return false; } if (Error::Failed(device->GetBackBuffer ( 0, D3DMBACKBUFFER_TYPE_MONO, &m_D3DBack ) ) ) { ERROR_EXPLAIN("Couldn't retrieve backbuffer."); return false; } RECT dest = { 0, 0, Device::GetWidth(), Device::GetHeight() }; if (Error::Failed( device->StretchRect ( m_D3DRenderSurface, NULL, m_D3DBack, &dest, D3DMTEXF_NONE ) ) ) { ERROR_EXPLAIN("Failed to stretch render texture to backbuffer."); return false; } if (Error::Failed(device->Present(NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL))) { ERROR_EXPLAIN("Failed to present device."); return false; } I'm looking for a way to do the same thing (render sprites using hardware acceleration and plot pixels on a buffer) without using a render target. Thanks in advance.

  • i5 540M or i7 720QM for laptop running VMs and software development tools?

    - by Donald Hughes
I'm a software developer that would primarily be running Windows 7 as the primary operating system. On a typical day, I might, at any given moment, be running Visual Studio, Expression Web, SQL Server developer (and Management Console), IIS, Photoshop, a dozen browser tabs in 2-3 different browsers, Skype video chat, streaming music, and a couple of VMs (WinXP and Ubuntu) for testing/experimentation. Obviously, RAM is a concern, which is why I plan to use 8 GB so I can devote enough to the VMs to be usable. I'm also tempted to use an ExpressCard SSD for storing the VM disks to ease disk contention. And I know that that is asking a lot from a laptop, and I should just use a desktop, but I need to be able to take my work with me between several locations. It seems that at a reasonable price point, it comes down to the i5 540M versus the i7 720QM. I'm leaning toward the i7 since it would allow me to dedicate a whole hyperthreaded core to each VM, and still have two cores left for the primary OS. I've heard that the i5 has better battery life, but I'm curious for my scenario if there would be a meaningful difference. I don't usually work without a plug, but I do occasionally ride the train or fly and it would be nice to have at least 3 hours of juice for unusual circumstances. And, finally, for this usage scenario, would a dedicated video option be preferred over the i5's integrated video? It sounds like Visual Studio 2010 (and Windows 7) can take advantage of the video card.

  • Remote Email Access?

    - by Tyler
I have remote email access from an iPhone or my Android phone, but I cannot setup a Windows Email Client to check my email using the exact same information I provided in my phones. The email system is an Exchange 2003 and I hate using the cheap Outlook Web App that it has. User: [email protected] Password: 1234 Server: mail.domain.com And that works for they phones. So why can't I get it to work on my email client? Maybe a DNS problem?

  • How to install wgt files (widgets) on Samsung Star without an internet connection?

    - by Koning Baard XIV
Hi, I just created a new widget by following a tutorial. I created a zip containing all files and renamed it to HelloWorld.wgt instead of HelloWorld.zip. I sent it to my phone via Bluetooth, but when I try to open the wgt file on my phone it says it can't open it, because it doesn't know the filetype. Is there a way to install homebrew widgets on a Samsung Star without using a webserver? Thanks,

  • Using a cell phone as a PC remote control

    - by Mahmoud Hossam
I have a sony ericsson phone that can control any PC using bluetooth, as long as it has permission to do so, of course. It doesn't require any server software of any kind, it just works out of the box with any PC (or mac) that is bluetooth enabled. Is there any program I could use that has the same functionality? I don't want to install anything on the PC, I just want to be able to use the program installed on the phone. I prefer Java ME/Android/Symbian apps, I don't have an iPhone.

  • Mac Management and Security

    - by Bart Silverstrim
I was going through some literature on managing OS X laptops and asked someone some questions about usage scenarios when using the MacBooks. I asked someone more knowledgeable than I about whether it was possible for my Mac to be taken over if I were visiting another site for a conference or if I went on a wifi network at a local coffee house with policies from an OS X Server with workgroup manager (either legit for the site or someone running a version of OS X Server on hardware they have hidden somewhere on the network), which apparently could be set up to do things like limit my access to Finder or impose other neat whiz-bang management features. He said that it is indeed possible for it to happen as it would be assigned via the DHCP server and the OS X server would assume my Mac is a guest and could hand out restrictions and apparently my Mac will happily accept them without notifying me or giving me an option, unlike Windows which I believe would need to be joined to a domain before it becomes "managed" by Active Directory. So my question is as network admins and sysadmins with users traveling with MacBooks, is there a way to reasonably protect your users from having their machines hijacked without resorting to just turning off networking all the time? Or isn't this much of a security hazard? What threat does this pose to the road warriors in your businesses?

  • Multiple cable adapter setup not working - VGA to smartphone. All cables tested and work

    - by Christopher Rucinski
Issue Pictured overhead projector setup does not work. #1 - #2 - #3 - Phone. All cables are tested and work! The issue is the HDMI connection between cable #2 and #3. With all other cables, the screen will automatically be displayed onto the projector screen. No extra work needed. With the pictured setup, the smartphone screen is not displayed onto the projector screen. What is the issue with the HDMI connection?? Background We recently had to do presentations at work (school), but the administration only provided VGA means of hooking up to it. Mostly likely reason probably dealt with cost. Anyways, there are several teachers that have brand new Samsung Series 9 ultrabooks (or similar). You know, the ones without VGA support. So I bought an adapter for those ultrabooks. Cable #5 in the picture below. However, both my coworker and I have been wanting to just display our phone screens on the projector. This I knew would require some extra work. What I have VGA cable to projector (cables go through the wall) For laptops HDMI to VGA cable For laptops MHL adapter For 11-pin microUSB phones microHDMI to VGA cable For ultrabooks 11-pin to 5-pin microUSB adapter For older 5-pin microUSB phones) Equipment Projectors 1 projector with VGA and HDMI input (issue is coworkers forget to switch sources) 1 projector with VGA only input Laptops 2 new Samsung ultrabooks w/o VGA or HDMI support 1 ultrabook with VGA and HDMI support several other laptops with at least VGA support 1 tablet with 11-pin microUSB at least 1 new phone with 11-pin microUSB at least 1 old phone with 5-pin microUSB Tested VGA cable (#1) to laptop Good VGA cable (#1) to HDMI adapter (#2) to laptop Good VGA cable (#1) to microHDMI adapter (#5) to laptop Good Projector to HDMI cable (not shown) to MHL adapter (#3) to Galaxy Note 3 smartphone Good VGA cable (#1) to HDMI adapter (#2) to MHL adapter (#3) to Galaxy Note 3 smartphone Does not work!! Extra Notes The 11-pin MHL adapter will not fit inside the 11-pin to 5-pin microUSB adapter so older phones can be displayed on the screen.

  • Shouldn't WP8 Emulator Work With an Intel Q9650?

    - by Al Bundy
My comp is as follows: -Windows 8 Pro -Visual Studio 12 Pro -Asus P5Q Pro Turbo -Intel Q9650 (Core 2 Quad 3.0 Ghz) As far as I can tell, this setup should support Windows Phone 8 Emulator, but When I installed Windows Phone 8 SDK, it said that my computer doesn't support hardware virtualization. It says here that it does: http://ark.intel.com/products/35428/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q9650-(12M-Cache-3_00-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB)

  • Android Software for the SysAdmin on the move.

    - by GruffTech
So my company has over service through Verizon, and AT&T Service in the area is "shoddy" at its best, so i haven't been able to join the "iPhone party" like so many of my fellow SysAdmins have been able to. That being said, this week finally i phone i like has hit Verizon, the HTC Incredible. (I've been waiting for the Desire or Nexus One, but after seeing spec sheets and reviews, HTC Incredible comes out ahead anyway). So (finally) I'm looking for Android Apps that are "gotta-haves" for System Admins. I've found the bottom three, If there's others you prefer over these let me know. RDP Program - RemoteRDP SSH Client - ConnectBot Nagios - NagMonDroid Reply with your favorite Android App and Why!

  • On an HTC Hero - with provider Orange in the UK - can one upgrade the OS?

    - by user32648
Currently it's running Android 1.5 - I'd clearly prefer to be on 1.6, 2.0 or 2.1 - but there seems to be limited information on this available on the internet. If anyone can confirm whether it's been done before, what versions are compatible with the handset, and any problems, it'd be really useful. Aside - it's kind of poor that a phone sold in March 2010 only runs Android 1.5... :(

  • Connecting to internet via phone on Linux

    - by Bart van Heukelom
I have a Sony Ericsson C702 phone with a flat fee internet subscription (GPRS/UMTS). I'd like to connect my Linux (Kubuntu 9.04) laptop to internet via this phone, using bluetooth (I also have a cable connection but that's propietary, doubt it'll work). How can I do this, preferably via GUI / NetworkManager / the BT applet that comes with KDE? In Windows I use SE's PC suite software which works great, but is not available for Linux.

  • Use dns suffixes only on certain wireless networks?

    - by eidylon
Hello all, quick question. I'm a software guy and networking is all black magic to me! I have a laptop which I use at home and at the office. In order to be able to more easily reference our servers at work, I have our domain name in the DNS suffixes on my TCP/IP settings on my wireless connection. This all works beautifully and I can reference our servers simply by name only. Now the problem... When I go home, it still has those suffixes in there, and I cannot access other servers because it appends the DNS suffixes to the server names. Is there a way I can set up DNS suffixes so that they are only applied when connected to a certain wireless network (I'm thinking by SSID).

  • Password manager solution: Symbian based phone and a Linux machine (Windows is not important, but wo

    - by Kent
Hi, I currently use KeePassX to manage my passwords on my Linux (Xubuntu) machine. It's nice to have all the passwords encrypted, but sometimes I'd like to be able to tell a password when I'm on the run. Therefore I'm looking for a solution which I can synchronize with my phone. I have a Nokia N82 which is a Symbian OS v9.2 based phone for the S60 3rd Edition platform with Feature Pack 1. I like an open source solution if it's possible. In case it isn't I wouldn't mind paying for a good solution. If Windows may be added to the synchronization mix it's nice, but it's absolutely not a primary requirement (I don't even have any computer running Windows).

  • Is there such a thing as an IP femtocell, and what does it do?

    - by The Journeyman geek
My dad mentioned a co-worker suggested using a device, that might use CDMA to route calls through IP to save costs on a certain overseas project we're on- since our home base is quite far from there. I've never heard of such a device, so if it does exist, I'm wondering, if it's specific to particular ISPs, or if you can just pick one off the shelf, plug it into an arbitrary Internet connection, and make calls using it and a cellphone of some sort? As you can tell, details are sketchy, so... if such a device doesn't exist, saying so might be a right answer ;)
