• bytea type & nulls, Postgres

  I'm using a bytea type in PostgreSQL, which, to my understanding, contains just a series of bytes. However, I can't get it to play well with nulls. For example: =# select length(E'aa\x00aa'::bytea); length -------- 2 (1 row) I was expecting 5. Also: =# select md5(E'aa\x00aa'::bytea); md5 ---------------------------------- 4124bc0a9335c27f086f24ba207a4912 (1 row) That's the MD5 of "aa", not "aa\x00aa". Clearly, I'm Doing It Wrong, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm also on an older version of Postgres (8.1.11) for reasons outside of my control. (I'll see if this behaves the same on the latest Postgres as soon as I get home...)

I have downloaded one chat application that checks network types supported by my device/service plan which has following list: 1)BIS-Http : OK 2)BIS-SOCKET :OK 3)BES-HTTP : NA 4)BES-SOCKET : NA 5)TCP-HTTP : BAD DNS 6)TCP-SOCKET : TIMED OUT As I know direct TCP is not supported by my service provider. So I would like to use BIS-Socket connection. Can anypne please help me in achieving this type of connectivity? Please help. Thanks in advance.

  I found a goodlooking example about implementation enums in a different way. That is called type-safe enum pattern i think. I started using it but i realized that i can not use it in a switch statement. • PHP is not returning me a number type

  Hello, i tryed to follow that great tutorial (STAR rating with css : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1987524/turn-a-number-into-star-rating-display-using-jquery-and-css) but i've just a big problem : When i do <span class="stars">1.75</span> or $foo='1.75'; echo '<span class="stars">'.$foo.'</span> the stars is correctly shown, but as soon as i do : while($val = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { $average = ($val['services'] + $val['serviceCli'] + $val['interface'] + $val['qualite'] + $val['rapport'] ) / 5 ; <span class="stars">.$average.</span> } the stars stops working i double checked the data type in mysql : they're all TINYINT(2) and i tryed that : $average = intval($average); but it's still not working, Thank you

• mysqli and field types

  Hi, I'd like to know if there is a simple way to fetch data from mysql tables with "correct" data types? What i mean, if field type is for example INT or SMALLINT is it possible to pass those types directly to PHP as integers? I did some searching and found mysqli_fetch_fields, but for SMALLIT type is 2, for INT 3 and so on. It could be done that way, but it looks rather clumsy workaround. Is there any better way? I'm using PHP and mysqli. Thank you.

• net.sf.hibernate.PropertyAccessException: Null value was assigned to a property of primitive type

  Hi! What might be reasons for running in the quoted exception upon a HQL select, when there is actually no NULL value in the respective field in the database? I've checked the database multiple times. I've manually submitted the query statement produced by hibernate (extracted from debug). Null values for the respective field are actually never returned. However, the corresponding row in the database is in fact nullable. Does hibernate care about the data base definition? I know, I could simple change the filed to a wrapper type, but we have a number of such fields in a legacy application and this only occurs upon a single query. I'm just wondering about the actual reason for getting this exception only with a single property. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

• Require Integer Value not Memory Address whilst avoiding Invalid receiver type compiler warning

  I have the following code; int days = [[SettingsUtils daysToRetainHistory] intValue]; [retainHistory setText:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"Days to retain History: %d", days]]; [daysToRetainHistory setValue:days animated:NO]; where [SettingsUtils daysToRetainHistory] is as follows; + (int) daysToRetainHistory { return (int)[[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults] objectForKey:@"CaseBaseDaysToRetainHistory"]; } I get the compiler warning Invalid receiver type 'int' because I call intValue on an int but unless I do this I can't seem to get the integer value out and always end up with the memory address i.e. 98765432 instead of 9 which ruins the UILabel display [retainHistory] and the UISlider [daysToRetainHistory] value. How do I avoid the compiler warning and still get my integer value in the label and the necessary float value for setting the UISlider value?

  Hi There everyone... looking for some advice on what type of view can be used to build a screen with the following elements: 2 labels followed by 2 buttons. Then a small table view with 3 rows. Should a UIView be used or a UITableView? I've attempted using a UITableView - however I couldn't add the labels or buttons. So I've now built the view using a UIView. I added the labels and buttons and then a UITableView from the library. However I have no idea how to populate the rows in the table? Any ideas? Regards, Fiona

• Why do I get "could not load type" error with my custom SessionStateProvider

  My associate has created a custom SessionStateProvider for me to use with my ASP.net application. I add the file CustomSessionStateProvider to my VS2008 Web Application Project and put the appropriate reference in the web.config and it works fine. However, my supervisor wants me to set this up as a GAC reference. At my office, we have many DLLs we've created that we use as GAC references across different projects. If I add my CustomSessionStateProvider to the Global Assembly Cache, my pages throw a could not load type CustomASP.CustomSessionStateProvider error. Simple removing the DLL from the GAC makes it work again, but I want to set this up as a GAC reference. What could be causing this problem?

  Is it possible to deduce a non-type template parameter from a template function parameter? Consider this simple template: template <int N> constexpr int factorial() { return N * factorial<N - 1>(); } template <> constexpr int factorial<0>() { return 1; } template <> constexpr int factorial<1>() { return 1; } I would like to be able to change factorial so that I can alternatively call it like this: factorial(5); and let the compiler figure out the value of N at compile time. Is this possible? Maybe with some fancy C++11 addition?

• Wanting a type of grid for a pixel editor

  Hi, I am currently trying to develop a basic pixel editor application to build up my programming experience with Java. I am designing it so the user has several colour options on, they click on an option and then they can drag over the cells in the grid and they change colour (like a typical image editor, but with a sort of snap on to each grid cell) Any idea of what Java component, if any, is able to implement this type of grid in Java? I had thought of each cell being a JButton, but this seemed terribly inefficient and I don't think it would be possible to change the colour of each cell(button) with out individually clicking on each one. Any help appreciated.

  I followed this article on making a table-per-type inheritance model for my entities, but I get the following error when I try to add an instance of a subclass to the database. Here is how I create the subtype: var cust = db.Users.CreateObject<Customer>(); // Customer inherits User db.Users.AddObject(cust); db.SaveChanges(); I get the following error when I make that last call: "A value shared across entities or associations is generated in more than one location. Check that mapping does not split an EntityKey to multiple store-generated columns." With the following inner exception: "An item with the same key has already been added." Any ideas on what I could be missing?

• Paperclip - Validate File Type but not Presence

  I am using paperclip to handle my file uploads, and in one situation I don't want the file to be mandatory. I do however want to make sure it is a specific file type when it is present. I have this: class TestModel < ActiveRecord::Base #stuff has_attached_file :sound #etc... validates_attachment_content_type :sound, :content_type => ['audio/mp3', 'application/x-mp3'] end And when I have no sound file present, it tells me it is not one of the valid content types. I've tried adding '' to the :content_type array, which also doesn't work! I also attempted creating a lambda procedure for the :if property, but I can't get it to run without some kind of error. Anything missing here?

Any help would be much appreciated.

  I apologize if that title is confusing. This question may be a result of lack of coffee and/or sleep, but my mind is not working correctly right now. Anyways, I have an inheritance tree like such (I know the architecture isn't ideal): BaseClass GeneralForm : Inherits BaseClass SpecificForm : Inherits GeneralForm And an object like so: MyItem MySpecificItem : Inherits MyItem I have Items As List (Of MyItem) as a property in BaseClass. I would like for SpecificForm to somehow override Items to return type List (Of MySpecificItem). I feel like this is easy to do, but again, my head is spinning and I can't think straight at the moment. Thank you so much in advance.

• How to free an Oracle Object-Type passed to an external procedure

  I'm using OTT to pass and load an Object Type from a C++ external procedure. The problem I have is that I don't know how to somehow mark the object for deallocation once extproc has done marshalling it. The object remains in extproc's memory forever making it grow in memory consumtion.   Hello. well.. I use red5 and setting/getting attributes using the IConnection class but tha's really not relevant. 'L' means long in java. so 0L is 0 type Long instead of just '0' which is 0 type Integer. the following error message: stack trace: java.lang.ClassCastException: [Ljava.lang.Long; cannot be cast to java.lang.Long what's the difference between [Ljava.lang.Long and java.lang.Long ? thanks!

  So I'm learning Scala at the moment, and I'm trying to create an abstract vector class with a vector-space of 3 (x,y,z coordinates). I'm trying to add two of these vectors together with the following code: package math class Vector3[T](ax:T,ay:T,az:T) { def x = ax def y = ay def z = az override def toString = "<"+x+", "+y+", "+z+">" def add(that: Vector3[T]) = new Vector3(x+that.x, y+that.y, z+that.z) } The problem is I keep getting this error: error: type mismatch; found : T required: String def add(that: Vector3[T]) = new Vector3(x+that.x, y+that.y, z+that.z) I've tried commenting out the "toString" method above, but that doesn't seem to have any effect. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

  Am I missing something or there really is no support for generic object type hinting in PHP 5.x? I find it really strange that hinting arrays is supported while hinting objects is not, at least not out of the box. I'd like to have something like this: function foo(object $o) Just as we have: function foo(array $o) Example of possible use: methods of an objects collection class. Workaround: using an interface "Object" implemented by all classes or extending all classes from a generic class "Object" and writing something like this: function foo(Object $o) Well, that just ain't cute. • UITableView - iPad - Property '' Not Found on Object of type UITableViewCell

  I have added a UITableView prototype Cell into a UIView for an iPad application using StoryBoard in Xcode (targeting iOS6). The problem I'm having is that the labels are not being recognized in my viewController when I try to reference them. In my implementation, I have: - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"dashboardMessage"; UITableViewCell *cell = [_tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; if (cell == nil) { cell = [[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; } int row = [indexPath row]; cell.messageSender.text = [_matches valueForKey:@"from"]; } The last line is causing an error: Property 'messageSender' Not Found on Object of type UITableViewCell In the cell's header file I have: @interface DashboardMessageCell : UITableViewCell @property (strong, nonatomic) IBOutlet UILabel *messageSender; @property (strong, nonatomic) IBOutlet UILabel *messageDescr; and the header file is imported into the viewController. • Oracle TIMESTAMP w/ timezone data type confusion

  When would you use TIMESTAMP w/ timezone as opposed to TIMESTAMP w/ local time zone? When data is stored in a column of data type TIMESTAMP w/ local tz, the data is normalized to the database time zone, and the time zone displacement is not stored as part of the column data. When users retrieve the data, Oracle returns it in the users' local session time zone. Isn't that much more useful? I can't think of a reason why I'd want to use TIMESTAMP w/ timezone and get back some gobble gook with a UTC offset.

  I am working both in C# and ActionScript 3. Both language are type-aware, so you can do verifications such as: if (some_object_instance is SomeClassName_ThatIs_SomeType) I'm doing these kind of verifications in a few places. Might be a dumb question, but I will ask it anyway, and I want answers from both camps, C# and ActionScript: What goes on behind the scenes? Is it Reflection? If is, isn't this a long verification which might degrade performance if done in thousands of loops? And by "degrade performance" I mean, is it more intensive than say if (Math.sqrt(8) > Math.sin(10))
