  Is it considered "safe" to use URL constructed from random characters like this? http://example.com/EU3uc654/Photos I'd like to put some files/picture galleries on a webserver that are only to be accessed by a small group of users. My main concern is that the files should not get picked up by search-engines or curious power-users that poke around my site. I've set up an .htaccess file, just to notice that clicking on http://user:pass@url/ links doesn't work well with some browsers/email clients, prompting dialogs and warnings messages that confuse my not-too-computer-savy users.

  I have a web site on a shared hosting server. My directory layout looks like this /home /user /public_html /pics /family There is an index.php file in public_html. I need help writing .htaccess rules that will Serve the index.php file when www.domain.org is requested Force the user back to public_html when www.domain.org/pics is requested Allow the user to see the directory contents when www.domain.org/pics/family is requested I experimented with a lot of combinations of RewriteCond and RewriteRule, but I don't understand the documentation and examples well enough to know if what I want to do is even possible. • Duplication of Windows 7 Backup

  I use the built in backup utility for Windows 7 because it's automated and flexible enough to allow me to schedule a daily shadow copy backup of particular files and folders directly to a separate internal RAID 0 array (2 x 1TB). It's also lightweight and stays out of the way. For off-site backup purposes, each week I copy the contents of the internal backup from the RAID 0 array to an external 1 TB drive. I then store move this drive to a different building. The copy from the internal backup to the external backup typically works like this: mount and erase contents of external drive highlight "file" on internal drive, hit CTRL+C CTRL+V on root directory of external drive Is there a better way to synchronize? Microsoft's SyncToy application does a pitiful job, and often leaves the folders not truly synchronized... which completely defeats the ability to use the backup's restore feature.

• Setting up a LAMP VM server for Development and Testing?

  Info: I would like to set up a VM server on my local computer which will serve pages in the exact same way as my current hosting (but only to me on my local computer). I currently pay a big web hosting company to host my website & web store and they are doing a great job, but I would like to be able to work on my Web site and its corresponding MySQL DB, HTML, and PHP code without being at risk of messing something completely up on the live servers. My current plan of action: Set up a VM webserver with Debian, MySQL, PHP, Apache. Copy web store (PHP/HTML) code to VM server. Copy my current MySQL databases from my hosting provider and install on VM server. Modify and test new features on VM server. Upload MySQL DB and HTML/PHP code back to web host's server where it should work as before but with new modifications. Questions: Now I'm pretty sure I have steps one and two down correctly but I can't for the life of me figure out how to proceed next, so here are my questions. I have my /etc/host file set up so www.MySite.test redirects to the IP address of the local VM webserver. Once I import my PHP/HTML files and MySQL file whats the best way to navigate around the fact that all of my files and DBs will reference www.MySite.com. I can export my MySQL dbs but do I also have to export my MySQL users and passwords to access those db or are those coded into my html/php code?

• Error connecting ESX 5.0.0 to domain

  I am trying to connect an ESX 5.0.0 to our Domain Controler, in order to give a Domain group specific roles security. But I do not see any groups after the host connects to the domain. Under Configuration - Authentication Services - I connected the host to the domain: I created the role I wanted, with the selected approved features But when I want to add a permission to a set of VM's, I can not see "my domain" on the drop down, only the: "localhost" How do I see "my domain" on the Domain drop down - so I can select the domain group to give the role to? To note: I followed the instructions to connect to the domain form VMware site.

• Route global shortcuts to pages opened in Firefox

  I like listening to music online on sites like stereomood.com. There is a major problem, however. I can not control the player with my keyboard. And even with a mouse - when I want to play/pause I must activate firefox window, select the tab where music plays and hit play/pause button manually - this is a pain, especially when you play a fullscreen game that can not minimize itself. Thus said, global keyboard shortcuts would be a perfect solution. I understand that different online media players have different controls and each site must be configured individually (like, select button with id 'play' and press it), but I believe that can be done in principle. I also guess that such tricks are impossible without some third-party native app which captures shortcuts and routes them to Firefox window. So, any solutions? Maybe some AutoHotkey hacks or similar.

• Is possible to arbitrarily register names to the same public IP?

  I registered a domain, lets say mysite.com (for example), then, results that somebody else has an A record from anotheraddress.com pointing to the same IP address of mine (in a VPS in linode.com) What can I do to avoid this???, I mean, I would prefer reject accesses from anotheraddress.com to my site. I just know only by casualty putting my genuine domain name on this http://www.domaintools.com/reverse-ip/ My DNS server is name.com, and the DNS server pointing to the my public IP is from GoDaddy. Is possible to register arbitrarily names to the same public IP? Can I use my DNS record with mysite.com to point to 209.85.133.147 (google.com), for example?

• Error connecting to the application.

  Hi guys, let me explain you the current scenario. We have a asp.net application on framework 2 running on intranet(Windows 2003 Server and Sql Server 2000). Now we have a xp machine where we installed and configured IIS with a virtual directory pointing on the local Xp machine and this machine is connected to our intranet. We have copied the same application files of the server to this XP machine. But the thing is the connection string/database of the application is pointing towards the intranet server. The problem is when we try to run the application on the XP machine we get this error : An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) Is this query related or concerned with this site or stackoverflow ?

• How do I get dynamic subdomains on domain aliases in Plesk? [closed]

  I am running a site that is available via many domains. So all domains depend on the same code, but depending on the requested domain, the correct information is shown to the user. In Plesk, I have one domain set up and it has domain aliases for all the others. This works ok. Now, I'd like to be able to use subdomains on those aliased domains. Like the domains, the subdomains will be used as input for the system to display the correct information. So, they are not a fixed set. What I have done: - In DNS I have added *.example.com CNAME example.com to the main domain. This is automatically copied by Plesk to all the aliases. So DNS-wise, I think it's ok. - I have added a vhost.conf file to the main domain, containing ServerAlias *.maindomain.tld. This works for the main domain. But still, not for the aliased domains. And there is no place to put vhost.conf files for the aliased domains.. How do I tell the server to respond to those domain's subdomains as well?

  I've implemented Django's relatively new allowed hosts setting, which is meant to prevent attackers from submitting requests with a fake HTTP Host header. Since adding that setting, I now get anywhere from 20-100 emails a day notifying me of invalid HTTP_HOST headers. I've copied in an example of a typical error message below. I'm hosting my site on EC2, and am relatively new to setting up/maintaining a server, so my question is what exactly is happening here, and what is the best way to manage these invalid and I assume malicious requests? [Django] ERROR: Invalid HTTP_HOST header: 'www.launchastartup.com'.You may need to add u'www.launchastartup.com' to ALLOWED_HOSTS.

• Server browser resolves localhost, but not server name

  I have a 2008 R2 server that I recently installed Solarwinds on. It is running IIS V7.5. I got the Solarwinds site loaded into IIS, however I can't resolve it when using the server name. It will however resolve when I put http:// localhost into the browser. I have tried editing the Hosts file to no avail. I have also played around with our DNS server to see if I can figure anything out there. I mess with the bindings in IIS, when I remove the binding for "localhosts" it stops resolving. But still get DNS lookup failed if I add the actual server name to the binding. Any ideas?

• Browser keeps being really rude to me today

  Hi All I've had this problem only once before, years ago. I bought a new computer the other day and last night I visited a website which Google Chrome suspected was an insecure site. So I proceeded to view the page anyway (Stupid, I know... But I was curious), and all of a sudden the window closed and ever since, every few minutes either Google chrome or Internet Explorer keeps popping up with random websites, most of which are porn-related sites. I have downloaded ZoneAlarm, IOBit 360, Eset Smart Security and none of them reported any problems. I still have the rube browser problem. Can somebody please suggest any software/ways to fix this? (Other than to reformat please :)) Thank you :)

• Is it a good idea to take onsite/offsite backups of server images?

  Assuming a non-virtualized environment it a good idea to take actual images of servers (using something like Acronis True Image) and store them on\off site? Backing up data is great but I feel it would be good to have copies of OS images in the event hardware dies or an upgrade gets botched I can always revert back. What would be your recommended way to do this (preferably using a NAS and an online backup service)? I was talking with the Iron Mountain folks and the service they described is more geared toward taking incremental snapshots of data. I'm not sure if there's a way to backup images in an incremental way such that only the changes between them are saved (that way I'm not wasting X GB each time I take an image).

• Community TFS Build Manager available for Visual Studio 2012 RC

  I finally got around to push out a version of the Community TFS Build Manager that is compatible with Visual Studio 2012 RC. Unfortunately I had to do this as a separate extension, it references different versions of the TFS assemblies and also some properties and methods that the 2010 version uses are now obsolete in the TFS 2012 API. To download it, just open the Extension Manager, select Online and search for TFS Build:   You can also download it from this link: http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/cfdb84b4-285e-4eeb-9fa9-dad9bfe2cd10 The functionality is identical to the 2010 version, the only difference is that you can’t start it from the Team Explorer Builds node (since the TE has been completely rewritten and the extension API’s are not yet published). So, to start it you must use the Tools menu: We will continue shipping updates to both versions in the future, as long as it functionality that is compatible with both TFS 2010 and TFS 2012. You might also note that the color scheme used for the build manager doesn’t look as good with the VS2012 theme….   Hope you will enjoy the tool in Visual Studio 2012 as well. • How to exclude IP from htaccess domain redirect

  I'm trying to write a custom redirect rule for some testing purposes on 2 domains with exactly same site. The code I am using is: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !^1\.2\.3\.4$ RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^.*site1.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.site2.com/$1 [R=301,L] What I want is to redirect all requests for site1 to site2 except for requests from IP address 1.2.3.4. But currently requests from that IP are also being redirected to site2. Is there something I've missed in settings? ( note: both domains are on the same shared hosting account )

• Setting up a server with only subdomains, any connection to top level goes to main server on another IP?

  I'm developing a web app where users will have their own sub-domain to login to and use the application. I'm running wordpress for the main website to manage the public / front end. Our application is developed in zend framework. The zf project is currently in a subfolder on the main server. I'd like to place the zend framework project onto another server (different IP) and keep it separate from the the wordpress front end www.domain.com site. The zf application server will run nginx. I'm not sure how to setup a server to run strictly sub domains. Setting up the virtual hosts in the configuration file is no problem. To give the users username.domain.com. But what about the main default configuration file? How would that be configured since the top level domain is technically another server (wordpress) on another IP?

• Day in the Life of Agile - The Forge Michigan November 27, 2012

  Went to training at The Forge yesterday and did a Day in the life of Agile with Pillar.  It was pretty good. This simulation introduces concepts like time-boxed iterations, User Stories, collective estimation, commitment to a product owner for iteration scope, formal verification ritual at iteration conclusion, tracking velocity, and making results big and visible through charts. The exercise is designed to simulate not only how agile teams and practices work, but the inevitable challenges that arise as teams attempt to adopt such practices. One of the best parts of this training was getting some hands on experience with agile.  We used a program called Scratch to create an arcade video game.  Our team chose Frogger.  We had 3 iterations at 20 minutes each.  I think we did pretty good but in the panic of trying to get a bunch done in only 20 minutes made it interesting. • Determining the State of a User using their Hostname

  Not sure if this is the right SE site. I figured this question doesn't belong on SO, but if you think it doesn't belong here either, I apologize. I've been looking into determining the location, specifically the state, of a user accessing my website. One of the options I've known about for a while is the GeoIP City Database, however this isn't the most cost effective solution and I'm cheap so I was looking for a less expensive way. Something that occurred to me was that my state was in the public hostname assigned to me by Comcast: (Dash Separated IP).hsd1.ma.comcast.net Could it be possible that other ISPs follow this same pattern of inserting the state abbreviation into their users' hostnames? I've been looking around for a list of hostnames for other ISPs, but I haven't found anything. Can anyone verify that this holds true for other major ISPs?

• How to limit server to specific IP addresses with mod_authz_host?

  Hi! I am very new to this area, so please bear with me. :) Right now I am running an Apache HTTP server on my setup, a very basic configuration. The website hosted on it is accessible from anywhere, and I want to limit the access to a specific IP address range. I've looked into this and I found that one Apache module called mod_authz_host handles this. http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_authz_host.html The problem is, I haven't managed to find documentation that explains well how to actually do the stuff. How do I actually make sure only a certain range of IP addresses can access my site/server? The machine is running Ubuntu Server 10.10, the web files are stored in /var/www/, the apache2 daemon has its stuff stored in /etc/apache2/ and /usr/lib/apache2/modules/*. Thanks in advance, and sorry if this is a stupid question!

• How to Keep SEO Score from Dropping with Duplicate Content

  I'm hoping that someone has a solution for what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm working on a travel agency web site and there's a "Overview" section for each cruise line. These overviews are located on the index page for each cruise line. Here's my issue: The company is creating a search engine that includes details on each cruise line. Their write-ups on each cruise line are great, so I'd like to include the overview they created for each cruise line, rather than having to create all new ones. However, I don't want duplicating their content to negatively affect the SEO scores of the pages they originally put this content on. It's gong to duplicate, since each page that's dynamically generated by their search engine is going to include a section about the cruise line (where I'd want to place the overview). Question: Is there any way that I can include these overviews (ideally, copying the exact HTML that they've already implemented) without the search engines indexing those particular code sections? I'd want the rest of the search result pages to be indexed...just not the section of each page that contains this duplicate code. I saw something about using a span class named robots-nocontent in Yahoo (not sure if this also applies to Bing) and googleon / googleoff tags in Google. Is this the best solution? I'm open to any suggestions, thanks!

• Firefox: How to get my home page in new tabs, instead of the recent sites 'tiles' thing :(

  In Firefox 25 (running on Windows 7), I have the following Startup settings: When Firefox starts = 'Show my home page' Home Page = (URL of the site I want) So when I click on the Home button, I get the right page. That's all good. However, when I open a new tab, I get the 'recently visited websites tiles' screen, i.e. this: Screenshot. How do I get Firefox to show my Home Page in new tabs as well?? Note: when I open a new Window, it works OK. I'm getting the Home Page there. The problem is just with New Tab!

  There was a recent weather event in the United States that seriously impacted our power grid and our physical well being. Lots of businesses found that they couldn’t get to their building or that their building was gone. Many of them got to do a full test of their disaster recovery processes. A big part of DR is having the ability to get yourself back online in a different location. Now, most of us are not going to be paying for multiple sites, but, we need the ability to move to one if needed. The best thing you can to start to set this up is have an off-site backup. Want an easy way to automate that? I mean, yeah, you can go to tape or to a portable drive (much more likely these days) and then carry that home, but we’ve all got access to offsite storage these days, SkyDrive, DropBox, S3, etc. How about just backing up to there? • Running Tomcat 7 and Apache 2 on the same server

  Part of my site needs to run over HTTPS and I'm creating a sub-domain for that part. I have apache httpd 2 AND Tomcat 7 running on the same server with the same IP, Apache is on port 80 of course, while Tomcat is running on port 8080. Right now I am doing domain forwarding for requests that need to run off tomcat. For example, mathteamhosting.com/mathApp can forward to mathteamhosting.com:8080/mathApp. I would like to have Tomcat handle the https requests for that subdomain. I don't think this forwarding technique can work in this case. How do I set that up so that Tomcat receives the requests on port 443 while apache handles port 80. To be more specific: http://proctinator.com == request goes to Apache web server https://private.proctinator.com == request goes to Apache web server

• How to test whether an image is already in cache? [migrated]

  I am developing a web site that has a lot of large, high-quality images on the home page. On the home page, there is an image carousel that pulls ten high quality images from a database. The images can be 1 meg each. The carousel images aren't my problem (right now), but it has something to do with it. The problem I am trying to address right now is that I use a high quality background image that I want to continue using, it's about 180k. If I have the background in cache on the home page, I want to use it. If not, then I don't want to use it on the home page. I'll load it from a different page. When the user returns to the home page, and the background image is in cache, I want to use it. Can I test whether an image is already in cache and if so, dynamically load or NOT load based on that? • I have Ubuntu only and need to install Windows

  I had Windows 8, I installed Ubuntu for a new OS, Then I want to sadly go back to Windows , I have a Windows Vista *.iso but I can't boot from it. When I try to extract the '.iso file and have the contents on my USB so it can boot up , When I restart and click F9 for my Boot Device Options , Only my Hard Drive and CD ROM are there but my "Generic Flash Drive" is not , But when I do not have Windows Vista '.iso on it , It will show up in the list. How can I make a partition of some sort, Provide instructions since I am new at this all , then I need to be able to use the Windows Vista installer and install Windows Vista, I would like Dual-Boot if possible. Info: I have the HP 2000 Laptop (Mine was removed from the Best Buy Website so the closest laptop to the specifications and the design is the link at the bottom) I am running Ubuntu 12.10. I have 4GB of RAM , 220 GB in my Hard Drive left , I have a USB Flash Drive which works sometimes , other times it fails.
