  XML Component Dictionary capabilities are provided in conjunction with the CAM Editor toolset.  These dictionaries accelerate the development of consistent XML information exchanges using standard sets of dictionary components. The quick tutorials are aimed at showing the 'how to' of the basic capabilities to jump start use of XML dictionaries with the CAM Editor.   I'm trying to determine what Puppet thinks the environment is on my agent nodes. Per the documentation I've configured the agent's environment in /etc/puppet/puppet.conf as such [agent] environment = development In order to view the environment I've found this code to add an environment fact to facter: require 'puppet' Facter.add("environment") do setcode do Puppet[:environment] end end However, on one of my agent nodes, if I run sudo facter -p environment, the result is production. I've tried to manually set the environment temporarily via sudo puppet agent --environment development, however the result from facter is the same. Any idea what's going on?

• How can I get started using TDD to code some simple functionality?

  I basically have the gist of TDD. I'm sold that it's useful and I've got a reasonable command of the MSTEST framework. However, to date I have not been able to graduate to using it as a primary development method. Mostly, I use it as a surrogate for writing console apps as test drivers (my traditional approach). The most useful thing about it for me is the way it absorbs the role of regression testing. I have not yet built anything yet that specifically isolates various testable behaviors, which is another big part of the picture I know. So this question is to ask for pointers on what the first test(s) I might write for the following development task: I want to produce code that encapsulates task execution in the fashion of producer/consumer. • Compiling for T4

  I've recently had quite a few queries about compiling for T4 based systems. So it's probably a good time to review what I consider to be the best practices. Always use the latest compiler. Being in the compiler team, this is bound to be something I'd recommend But the serious points are that (a) Every release the tools get better and better, so you are going to be much more effective using the latest release (b) Every release we improve the generated code, so you will see things get better (c) Old releases cannot know about new hardware. Always use optimisation. You should use at least -O to get some amount of optimisation. -xO4 is typically even better as this will add within-file inlining. Always generate debug information, using -g. This allows the tools to attribute information to lines of source. This is particularly important when profiling an application. The default target of -xtarget=generic is often sufficient. This setting is designed to produce a binary that runs well across all supported platforms. If the binary is going to be deployed on only a subset of architectures, then it is possible to produce a binary that only uses the instructions supported on these architectures, which may lead to some performance gains. I've previously discussed which chips support which architectures, and I'd recommend that you take a look at the chart that goes with the discussion. Crossfile optimisation (-xipo) can be very useful - particularly when the hot source code is distributed across multiple source files. If you're allowed to have something as geeky as favourite compiler optimisations, then this is mine! Profile feedback (-xprofile=[collect: | use:]) will help the compiler make the best code layout decisions, and is particularly effective with crossfile optimisations. But what makes this optimisation really useful is that codes that are dominated by branch instructions don't typically improve much with "traditional" compiler optimisation, but often do respond well to being built with profile feedback. The macro flag -fast aims to provide a one-stop "give me a fast application" flag. This usually gives a best performing binary, but with a few caveats. It assumes the build platform is also the deployment platform, it enables floating point optimisations, and it makes some relatively weak assumptions about pointer aliasing. It's worth investigating. SPARC64 processor, T3, and T4 implement floating point multiply accumulate instructions. These can substantially improve floating point performance. To generate them the compiler needs the flag -fma=fused and also needs an architecture that supports the instruction (at least -xarch=sparcfmaf). The most critical advise is that anyone doing performance work should profile their application. I cannot overstate how important it is to look at where the time is going in order to determine what can be done to improve it. I also presented at Oracle OpenWorld on this topic, so it might be helpful to review those slides.

  J-ISIS, which is the newly developed Java version of the UNESCO generalized information storage and retrieval system for bibliographic information, continues to be under heavy development and code refactoring in its open source repository. Read more about J-ISIS and its NetBeans Platform basis here. But the Java integration has always produced from time to time some strange behavior (like losing the focus on the other components after clicking on the Browser window, overlapping of windows, etc.), most probably because of mixing heavyweight and lightweight components and also because of our incompetency in solving the issues. Thus, recently we changed for the JavaFX 2.2 WebWiew. The integration with Java is fine and we have got rid of all the DJ-Native Swing problems. However, we have lost some features which were given for free with the native browsers such as downloading resources in different formats and opening them in the right application. This is a pretty cool step forward, i.e., the JavaFX integration. It also confirms for me something I've heard other people saying too: the JavaFX WebView component is a perfect low threshold entry point for Swing developers feeling their way into the world of JavaFX.

  Hello I'm having a large problem with our development server, it have had a program called Webmin + a total idiot have been administrating the Linux sever. Witch now have resulted in the server being totally trashed, there are so many different kinds of the same program install that anything doesn’t work. And don't get me started on the users and groups :D Well at last I have been given the responsibility to administrate our development server. But I would like to start from scratch, instead of trying to find every single package and config the previous admin have **ed up. But the problem is that it is a remote hosted server with ssh access. The server is running Debian, but i am thinking of reinstalling it with ubuntu server Thanks

Generic Data Fix (GDF) are created by development to fix data issues caused by bugs/issues in the application code.  Other Generic Data Fix benefits/features include: Developed for bugs that can cause data issues. Provides a SELECT script that uses an identification/signature query to identify and report all data affected by issue/condition caused by a bug. Allow customers to view and modify what will be fixed. Provides a separate FIX script to fix the data reported by the SELECT script. The FIX script creates backup tables for the data that is fixed/updated. Available on My Oracle Support for download In Release 12, when creating a refund by either of the following methods: Applied a receipt to the Refund activity - which creates an Invoice in Payables Or you went directly into Payables to create a refund for an open Credit Memo in Receivables The Invoice in Payables that is associated to the refund is cancelled, the corresponding refund application or credit memo in Receivables is not properly re-instated. For the receipt application, it still remains applied to the Refund whereas this should be automatically unapplied. For the credit memo, it stays closed instead of getting re-opened. Doc ID 761993.1 includes the patch to make sure this doesn’t happen in the future as well as a GDF script to fix the current data (Script name: ar_std_refund_unapp.sql).  Download the script and run in READ_ONLY_MODE to identify 'refund' applications with this problem.   Flow is a concept introduced by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi; in short, it means to get into the "zone". You feel immersed in your task, focused; the task can be difficult but challenging at the same time. When people achieve flow their productivity shoots up. Programming requires a great deal of mental focus because we often need to juggle several things in our minds at once. Many like to work in a quiet environment where they can direct their full attention to the task. If they are interrupted, it may take several minutes or even hours to get back into flow. I understand there's a practice in agile development and extreme programming called pair programming. It means you put the whole software development team in one room so that communication is seamless. You do write code with your pair because this way you get instant code reviews and fewer bugs get through. I've always had problems achieving flow while doing pair programming because of constant interruptions. I'm thinking deep about an issue then all of sudden someone asks me a question from another pair. My train of thought is lost. How can you achieve and maintain flow while pair programming?

  I've worked out how to get my linux based Netbeans PHP development machine to behave much like what happens when you create a new ASP.Net project in Visual Studio. Firstly create multiple PHP project in Netbeans,say for example mysite1 and mysite2. Next edit the apache2/sites-enabled/000-default file and add two virtualhost sections as below <VirtualHost 127.0.1.1> ServerName mysite1.localhost DocumentRoot /var/www/mysite1/ </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 127.0.2.1> ServerName mysite2.localhost DocumentRoot /var/www/mysite2/ </VirtualHost> For each site you add, pick a different ip address similar to the above where I use the third octet to increment, next edit the etc/hosts file and add the following two lines 127.0.1.1 mysite1.localhost 127.0.2.1 mysite2.localhost Then in Netbeans, go to File->Project Properties click on 'Run Configuration' and set 'Project Url' to http://mysite1.localhost for the first project and http://mysite2.localhost for the second project. That will give you a PHP development box which develops multiple PHP projects similar to how a Visual Studio Windows based box handles multiple ASP.Net sites. Hope this helps someone :)

The build is interrupted because it complains glib is not installed, so I thought I better install the glib development package. Need to get 1 775 kB of archives. After unpacking 8 831 kB will be used.   SOA stands for Service Oriented Architecture and has only really come together as a concrete approach in the last 15 years or so, although the concepts involved have been around for longer. Oracle SOA Suite is based around the Service Component Architecture (SCA) devised by the Open SOA collaboration of companies including Oracle and IBM. SCA, as used in SOA suite, is designed as a way to crystallise the concepts of SOA into a standard which ensures that SOA principles like the separation of application and business logic are maintained. Orchestration or Integration? A common thing to see with many people who are beginning to either build a new SOA based infrastructure, or move an old system to be service oriented, is confusion in the purpose of SOA technologies like BPEL and enterprise service buses. For a lot of problems, orchestration tools like BPEL or integration tools like an ESB will both do the job and achieve the right objectives; however it’s important to remember that, although a hammer can be used to drive a screw into wood, that doesn’t mean it’s the best way to do it. Service Integration is the act of connecting components together at a low level, which usually results in a single external endpoint for you to expose to your customers or other teams within your organisation – a simple product ordering system, for example, might integrate a stock checking service and a payment processing service. Process Orchestration, however, is generally a higher level approach whereby the (often externally exposed) service endpoints are brought together to track an end-to-end business process. This might include the earlier example of a product ordering service and couple it with a business rules service and human task to handle edge-cases. A good (but not exhaustive) rule-of-thumb is that integrations performed by an ESB will usually be real-time, whereas process orchestration in a SOA composite might comprise processes which take a certain amount of time to complete, or have to wait pending manual intervention. BPEL vs BPMN For some, with pre-existing SOA or business process projects, this decision is effectively already made. For those embarking on new projects it’s certainly an important consideration for those using Oracle SOA software since, due to the components included in SOA Suite and BPM Suite, the choice of which to buy is determined by what they offer. Oracle SOA suite has no BPMN engine, whereas BPM suite has both a BPMN and a BPEL engine. SOA suite has the ESB component “Mediator”, whereas BPM suite has none. Decisions must be made, therefore, on whether just one or both process modelling languages are to be used. The wrong decision could be costly further down the line.
