• What is a "Technical Programmer"? [closed]

  I've noticed in job posting boards a few postings, all from European companies in the games industry, for a "Technical Programmer". The job description in both was similar, having to do with tools development, 3d graphics programming, etc. It seems to be somewhere between a Technical Artist who's more technical than artist or who can code, and a Technical Director but perhaps without the seniority/experience. Information elsewhere on the position is sparse. The title seems redundant and I haven't seen any American companies post jobs by that name exactly. One example is this job posting on gamedev.net which isn't exactly thorough. In case the link dies: Subject: Technical Programmer Frictional Games, the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the Penumbra series, are looking for a talented programmer to join the company! You will be working for a small team with a big focus on finding new and innovating solutions. We want you who are not afraid to explore uncharted territory and constantly learn new things. Self-discipline and independence are also important traits as all work will be done from home. Some the things you will work with include: 3D math, rendering, shaders and everything else related. Console development (most likely Xbox 360). Hardware implementations (support for motion controls, etc). All coding is in C++, so great skills in that is imperative. As I mentioned, the job title has appeared from European companies so maybe it goes by another title in America. What other titles might this specialization of programmer go by?

• Building a complete program?

  Reading books, watching videos, and reviewing tutorials is all very easy. Taking notes and actually learning the material may be slightly harder, but even then, anyone with a decent brain and a fair amount of interest, it's easy enough (not to mention, fun). The thing is, it doesn't really prepare you to write a full program or website. Let's say you're those teens (only in highschool, no true (college level) computer science or programming courses, and no real world experience), and you come out with Groupon. Or even Mark Zuckerburg, sure he was a genius, and he was a very capable programmer... but how? How do you recommend that people who are not necessarily new to programming, but new to programming real applications and real programmers go about developing it? What is the "development process" - especially for single programmers (or maybe 2-3 teens)? Also, as far as web development goes, what is the process? Was something like Facebook or Groupon written with a framework (like CodeIgniter or Zend for PHP)? Or do they develop their own frameworks? I'm not asking how to come up with a great idea, but how to implement great ideas in an effective way? Does anyone have advice? I've read a couple of books on both C and C++ (primarily the C Programming Language and the C++ Programming Language) and taken AP Computer Science (as well as read a few additional books on Java and OOP). I also have read a few tutorials on PHP (and CodeIgniter) and Python. But I'm still in highschool, and I'm technically not even old enough to work at an internship for a few more months.

• IIS 7.5 and ASP.NET MVC Routing

  I'm running an ASP.NET MVC 3 application on an IIS 7.5 server (my development server). When I set up my production server something goes wrong. Serving the same application binaries, using the same web.config file and connecting to the same database I get different results. Something must be wrong with my IIS configuration, but what? Here's an example I visit http://mysite.com/An/AspNetMvc/Routed/Address/1 and everything works I visit http://mysite.com/An/AspNetMvc/Routed/Address/1.1 works on my development server but not on my production server which gives the following error HTTP Error 404.0 - Not Found The resource you are looking for has been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Module IIS Web Core Notification MapRequestHandler Handler StaticFile Error Code 0x80070002 Somehow the URL is served as a static file on my production server which led me to investigate my IIS Handler Mappings, but without luck.

Furthermore, I am coding over LLBGen by working with LINQ to SQL. I see there is a plug-in for LLBGen and LINQPad. Still I wonder if LINQPad is really worth it or what benefits it can give me or if it's still highly suggested out there for ORMs, etc.

  I’ve received a buch of emails from PASS Summit “First Timers” that are also somehow new to SQL Server (for “somehow” I mean people with less than 6 month experience but with some basic knowledge of SQL Server engine) or are catching up from SQL Server 2000. The common question regards the session one should not miss to have a broad view of the entire SQL Server platform have some insight into some specific areas of SQL Server Given that I’m on (semi-)vacantion and that I have more free time (not true, I have to prepare slides & demos for several conferences, PASS Summit  - Building the Agile Data Warehouse with SQL Server 2012 - and PASS 24H - Agile Data Warehousing with SQL Server 2012 - among them…but let’s pretend it to be true), I’ve decided to make a post to answer to this common questions. Of course this is my personal point of view and given the fact that the number and quality of session that will be delivered at PASS Summit is so high that is very difficoult to make a choice, fell free to jump into the discussion and leave your feedback or – even better – answer with another post. I’m sure it will be very helpful to all the SQL Server beginners out there. I’ve imposed to myself to choose 6 session at maximum for each Track. Why 6? Because it’s the maximum number of session you can follow in one day, and given that all the session will be on the Summit DVD, they are the answer to the following question: “If I have one day to spend in training, which session I should watch?”. Of course a Summit is not like a Course so a lot of very basics concept of well-established technologies won’t be found here. Analysis Services, Integration Services, MDX are not part of the Summit this time (at least for the basic part of them).   A company in the USA is building a new Web App that will be offered SaaS to customers and the development is being done by a software development team located in a different country(India). They are about to take delivery of a first demo to provide live feedback to the team in India. The overseas team requires a cloud server (Windows + SQL Standard, 8GB Ram, 8 vCPUs, 40GB SSD system disk, 80GB SSD data disk, 1600Mb/s network bandwidth) to serve as a tester server. When the tester is setup the team will install the app on the test server to get live feedback. • Can a site recover by itself after dropping google page rank for 404 errors?

  Recently redid a website and changed the directory / URL structure. I did some .htaccess redirects for the main landing pages - however when reviewing web master tools received 404 errors for the rest of the changed URLs and noticed that Google dropped my site from the #1 position to around the 5th page. I corrected all the 404s by providing redirects in the .htaccess, resubmitted the site map and tested the google crawl bot. Will my page regain its rank by itself - or am I going to have to put some time into like I originally did?

  At the NIST Cloud Computing Workshop this week; representatives from Canada, China, and Japan presented on their cloud computing efforts. Some interesting points made: Canada: Building "Service Canada" cloud for all citizen services, but raised the issue of data location...cloud data must be within Canada border, so they will not focus on public clouds where they don't know or can't control data location. Japan: In response to the massive destruction of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan is building nation-wide cloud services to support disaster relief, data recovery, and support for rebuilding new communities. US Ambassador Philip Verveer discussed the need for international cooperation and standards development to enable interoperability of cloud services, keeping in mind cultural and political differences. Additionally, an industry panel reported on cloud standards development, including some actual interoperability testing at http://www.cloudplugfest.org. Much of the first two days of the workshop covered progress and action plans around the 10 High-Priority Requirements to Further USG Agency Cloud Computing Adoption. • Antenna Aligner part 1: In the beginning.

  Picture the scene, it's 9pm, I'm in my caravan (yes I know, I've heard all the jokes!) with my family and I'm trying to tune the tv by moving the aerial, retuning, moving the aerial again, retuning... 45 mins and much cursing later I succeed. Surely there must be an easier way than this? Aha, an app; there must be an app for that? So I search in the AppStore for such an app, but curiously drew a blank. Then the seeds of the idea started to grow. I can code, I work in a software house with lots of very clever people, surely I can make an app that points to the nearest digital tv transmitter! Not having looked into app development before, I investigated how one goes about making an iPhone app and was quickly greeted by a now familiar answer "Buy a mac!". That was not an option for many reasons, mostly wife related! My dreams were starting to fade until one of my colleagues pointed out that within Red Gate, the very company I work for, there was on-going development on a piece of software that would allow me to write an app using Visual Studio on a Windows machine, Nomad! Once I signed up for the beta program I got to work learning the Jquery mobile / Phonegap framework. Within a couple of hours I had written (in Visual Studio), built in the cloud (using Nomad) and published (via TestFlight) my first iPhone app onto my iPhone ! It didn't do much, but it was a step in the right direction. To be continued...

• Does Fetch as Googlebot still support their ajax-crawling proposal?

  I spent half a day implementing the server side html generation for modal pages based on their proposal (link), but it seems like the Fetch as Googlebot functionality in Webmaster tools completely ignores the URL fragment. I've verified that the _escaped_fragment_ functionality is working on my server (example), but when I submit a URL like /#!/recipes, the Googlebot just fetches /. There aren't any recent confirmations that it's working and, honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if they just silently dropped the functionality without even editing the docs.

• How should a JEE application store credentials for logging in to an external system?

  I am in a situation where I have a Web Application (WAR) that is accessing a REST service provided by another application. The REST service uses Basic HTTP Authentication. So that means the application calling the REST service needs to store user credentials somehow. To further complicate things, this is an enterprise, so there are different 'regions' the application moves through which will have different credentials for the same service (think local development, development region, integration region, user test region, production, etc...) My first instinct is that the credentials should be stored by the JEE container and the application should ask the container for the credentials (probably via JNDI?). I'm beginning to read about Java Authentication and Authorization Service (JAAS) but I'm not sure if that is the appropriate solution to this problem. How should a JEE application store credentials for logging in to an external system? A few more details about my WAR. It is a Spring-Integration project that has no front-end. The container I am working with is Websphere. I am using JEE 5 and Spring 4.0.1. To this point I have not needed to consider spring-security... does this situation mean I should re-evaluate that decision?

  I knew that WebLogic had this small ZIP distribution, of only 184M, but what I didn't know was that it is so easy to install it on Linux machines, specially for development purposes, that I thought I had to blog about it. You may want to check this blog, where I found the missing part on this how to, but I'm blogging this again because I wanted to put it in a simpler way, straight to the point. And if you are looking for a how to for Mac, check Arun Gupta's post.  So, here's the step-by-step: 1 - Download the ZIP distribution (don't worry if your system is x86_64)Don't forget to accept the OTN Free Developer License Agreement! 2 - Choose where to install your WebLogic server and your domain, and set as your MW_HOME environment variableI will use /opt/middleware/weblogic for this how to export MW_HOME=/opt/middleware/weblogicMake sure this path exists in your system. 'mydomains' will be used to keep your WebLogic domain. mkdir -p $MW_HOME/mydomain 3 - If you don't have your JAVA_HOME environment variable still configured, do it. The idea is many times I have to take the snapshot and edit the image to crop to my region of interest, SnagIt does that automatically and very nicely.
