• PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer vs Filters -- Spring Beans

  Hi there. I've got a question regarding the difference between PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer (org.springframework.beans.factory.config.PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer) and normal filters defined in my pom.xml. I've been looking at examples, and it seems that even though filters are defined and marked to be active by default in the pom.xml they still make use of PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer in Spring's applicationContext.xml. This means that the pom.xml has a reference to a filter-LOCAL.properties while applicationContext.xml has a reference to application.properties and they both contain the same settings. Why is that? Is that how it is supposed to be done? I'm able to run the goal mvn jetty:run without the application.properties present, but if I add settings to the application.properties that differ from the filter-LOCAL.properties they don't seem to override. • C/C++: feedback in analyzing a code example

  Hello, I have a piece of code from an assignment I am uncertain about. I feel confident that I know the answer, but I just want to double-check with the community incase there's something I forgot. The title is basically secure coding and the question is just to explain the results. int main() { unsigned int i = 1; unsigned int c = 1; while (i > 0) { i = i*2; c++; } printf("%d\n", c); return 0; } My reasoning is this: At first glance you could imagine the code would run forever, considering it's initialized to a positive value and ever increasing. This of course is wrong because eventually the value will grow so large it will cause an integer overflow. This in turn is not entirely true either, because eventally it will force the variable 'i' to be signed by making the last bit to 1 and therefore regarded as a negative number, therefore terminating the loop. So it is not writing to unallocated memory and therefore cause integer overflow, but rather violating the data type and therefore causing the loop to terminate. I am quite sure this is the reason, but I just want to double check. Any opinions?

• sizer.replace() paints "over" old sizercontent

  I create a custom view in cocoa touch that is superclassed by UIView and in my main controller I initialize it and then add it as a subview to the main view, but when I add it to the main view it calls my initializer method again and causes an infinite loop. Am I going about creating my custom view wrong? • JDBC transaction dead-lock solution required?

  It's a scenario described my friend and challenged to find solution. He is using Oracle database and JDBC connection with read committed as transaction isolation level. In one of the transaction, he updates a record and executes selects statement and commits the transaction. when everything happening within single thread, things are fine. But when multiple requests are handled, dead-lock happens. Thread-A updates a record. Thread B updates another record. Thread-A issues select statement and waits for Thread-B's transaction to complete the commit operation. Thread-B issues select statement and waits for Thread-A's transaction to complete the commit operation. Now above causes dead-lock. Since they use command pattern, the base framework allows to issue commit only once (at the end of all the db operation), so they are unable to issue commit immediately after select statement. My argument was Thread-A supposed to select all the records which are committed and hence should not be issue. But he said that Thread-A will surely wait till Thread-B commits the record. is that true? What are all the ways, to avoid the above issue? is it possible to change isolation-level? (without changing underlying java framework) Little information about base framework, it is something similar to Struts action, their each and every request handled by one action, transaction begins before execution and commits after execution.

  Hey guys, I've looked through the PHP Docs and can't see anything to do with this, so how can I test if a string is URL encoded? • Pecking order of pigeons?

  I was going though problems on graph theory posted by Prof. Ericksson from my alma-mater and came across this rather unique question about pigeons and their innate tendency to form pecking orders. The question goes as follows: Whenever groups of pigeons gather, they instinctively establish a pecking order. For any pair of pigeons, one pigeon always pecks the other, driving it away from food or potential mates. The same pair of pigeons always chooses the same pecking order, even after years of separation, no matter what other pigeons are around. Surprisingly, the overall pecking order can contain cycles—for example, pigeon A pecks pigeon B, which pecks pigeon C, which pecks pigeon A. Prove that any finite set of pigeons can be arranged in a row from left to right so that every pigeon pecks the pigeon immediately to its left. Since this is a question on Graph theory, the first things that crossed my mind that is this just asking for a topological sort of a graphs of relationships(relationships being the pecking order). What made this a little more complex was the fact that there can be cyclic relationships between the pigeons. If we have a cyclic dependency as follows: A-B-C-A where A pecks on B,B pecks on C and C goes back and pecks on A If we represent it in the way suggested by the problem, we have something as follows: C B A But the above given row ordering does not factor in the pecking order between C and A. I had another idea of solving it by mathematical induction where the base case is for two pigeons arranged according to their pecking order, assuming the pecking order arrangement is valid for n pigeons and then proving it to be true for n+1 pigeons. I am not sure if I am going down the wrong track here. Some insights into how I should be analyzing this problem will be helpful. Thanks

  I'm trying to find a better way to get the next or previous record from a table. Let's say I have a blog or news table: CREATE TABLE news ( news_id INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY AUTO_INCREMENT, news_datestamp DATETIME NOT NULL, news_author VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL, news_title VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL, news_text MEDIUMTEXT NOT NULL ); Now on the frontend I want navigation buttons for the next or previous records, if i'm sorting by news_id, I can do something rather simple like: SELECT MIN(news_id) AS next_news_id FROM news WHERE news_id > '$old_news_id' LIMIT 1 SELECT MAX(news_id) AS prev_news_id FROM news WHERE news_id < '$old_news_id' LIMIT 1 But the news can be sorted by any field, and I don't necessarily know which field is sorted on, so this won't work if the user sorts on news_author for example. • Dynamically setting the queryset of a ModelMultipleChoiceField to a custom recordset

  I've seen all the howtos about how you can set a ModelMultipleChoiceField to use a custom queryset and I've tried them and they work. However, they all use the same paradigm: the queryset is just a filtered list of the same objects. In my case, I'm trying to get the admin to draw a multiselect form that instead of using usernames as the text portion of the , I'd like to use the name field from my account class. • InvalidCastException when getting Text from a Label referenced by dynamicaly built String, Fix?

  NET Version: 3.5 Ok, I recieve an error (System.InvalidCastException was unhandled. Message="Unable to cast object of type 'System.Windows.Forms.Control[]' to type 'System.Windows.Forms.Label'.") when trying to get Text from a Label referenced by a dynamicly built string. Here's my situation; I have an array of 250 labels named l1 - l250. What I want to do is loop through them using this while statement: int c = 1; while (c < 251) { string k = "l" + c.ToString(); //dynamic name of Control(Label) object ka = Controls.Find(k, true); string ct = ((Label)ka).Text; //<<Error Occurs Here build = build + ct; c++; } and get the text value of each to build a string named build. I don't get any build errors, just this while debuging. While debuging I can go down to view my local variables. When looking through these, I can view the contents of object ka; it does contain the correct Text value of the correct Label I want to "access". I just don't understand how to get there. The text value is listed under "[0]" which is the only subcatagory for "ka".

• Lucene setboost doesn't work

  Hi all, OUr team just upgrade lucene from 2.3 to 3.0 and we are confused about the setboost and getboost of document. What we want is just set a boost for each document when add them into index, then when search it the documents in the response should have different order according to the boost I set. But it seems the order is not changed at all, even the boost of each document in the search response is still 1.0. Could some one give me some hit? • Skipping the BufferedReader readLine() method in java

  Is there a easy way to skip the readLine() method in java if it takes longer than, say, 2 seconds? Here's the context in which I'm asking this question: public void run() { boolean looping = true; while(looping) { for(int x = 0; x<clientList.size(); x++) { try { Comm s = clientList.get(x); String str = s.recieve(); // code that does something based on the string in the line above } // other stuff like catch methods } } } Comm is a class I wrote, and the receive method, which contains a BufferedReader called "in", is this: public String recieve() { try { if(active) return in.readLine(); } catch(Exception e) { System.out.println("Comm Error 2: "+e); } return ""; } I've noticed that the program stops and waits for the input stream to have something to read before continuing. Which is bad, because I need the program to keep looping (as it loops, it goes to all the other clients and asks for input). Is there a way to skip the readLine() process if there's nothing to read? I'm also pretty sure that I'm not explaining this well, so please ask me questions if I'm being confusing.

• Maven - 'all' or 'parent' project for aggregation?

  For educational purposes I have set up a project layout like so (flat in order to suite eclipse better): -product | |-parent |-core |-opt |-all Parent contains an aggregate project with core, opt and all. Core implements the mandatory part of the application. Opt is an optional part. All is supposed to combine core with opt, and has these two modules listed as dependencies. I am now trying to make the following artifacts: product-core.jar product-core-src.jar product-core-with-dependencies.jar product-opt.jar product-opt-src.jar product-opt-with-dependencies.jar product-all.jar product-all-src.jar product-all-with-dependencies.jar Most of them are fairly straightforward to produce. I do have some problem with the aggregating artifacts though. I have managed to make the product-all-src.jar with a custom assembly descriptor in the 'all' module which downloads the sources for all non-transitive deps, and this works fine. This technique also allows me to make the product-all-with-dependencies.jar. I however recently found out that you can use the source:aggregate goal in the source plugin to aggregate sources of the entire aggregate project. This is also true for the javadoc plugin, which also aggregates through the usage of the parent project. So I am torn between my 'all' module approach and ditching the 'all' module and just use the 'parent' module for all aggregation. It feels unclean to have some aggregate artifacts produced in 'parent', and others produced in 'all'. Is there a way of making an 'product-all' jar in the parent project, or to aggregate javadoc in the 'all' project? Or should I just keep both? Thanks
