  • How to deploy and secure an ASP.NET web app to be available to internal and outside users?

    - by Swoop
My company has several web applications written in ASP.NET. We need to make these applications available to Intranet users as well as authenticated external users. Most of the features are the same for the two groups, though there are some extra features available to the Internal users. The two different sets of users would use a slightly different security setup... our internal people will be authenticated using LDAP against Exchange, whereas the external users will have accounts in SQL Server. What is the best approach for deploying our web apps? Should we deploy 2 copies to different servers, one configured for an Intranet and one for outside users? Or is there a better way to share the code between the 2 servers, yet have the flexibility to use different web.config settings for security??

  • Secure to store an ID in an ASP.NET control ID?

    - by Curtis White
I'm auto-generating a form in my ASP.NET page. This is already tested and working. I want to know if: If there are any security problems with storing the database ID as part of my controls ID? I can see think of 2 issues: the id will be visible in page source (not really important in this case), and the possibility someone could change the name of the control somehow? This second possibility is more serious. Is this a potential problem and how to void it? If there would be a better preferred way to associate a unique data with any type of control? Is it possible to store a custom item in the viewstate for the control?

  • Is it more secure to run a desktop app in a applet?

    - by Tom Brito
Fist of all, when I say "run a desktop app in a applet" I mean do a Applet application that runs off-line, instead of a Desktop application that runs inside a JFrame. The little I know about applets (and maybe something I say is wrong, please correct me) is that applets have all permitions not granted by default. Also, the applets run inside a Sandbox, that does not allow information in or out without explicity permition. So, if I am focused on security in my application, its best to run it inside an applet (off-line, for a desktop application) then inside a JFrame. Is it right?

  • MATLAB: How do I get 3D coordiantes from a user-click?

    - by Tim
I'm using Matlab to create a small chess game for one of my courses this semester. The thing I'm having trouble with is having the user be able to select one of the chess pieces. To simplify things, I'm making it so that the user selects a piece by clicking on the square that the chess piece resides on rather than clicking the piece itself (which I assume would be much more difficult). I know how to get the x and y coordinates of the view-port, but how do I transform these coordinates into 3-space coordinates? I know that there are multiple x,y,z coordinates associated with each view-port coordinate, but I'm only interested in the x,y,z coordinate where z = 0 (since the board itself is in the x,y plane that intersects the z axis where z = 0). Thanks!

  • nginx subdomains improperly act like wildcard?

    - by binjured
I have an odd problem with nginx subdomains. First, my configuration: server { listen 443 ssl; server_name secure.example.com; ssl_certificate example.crt; ssl_certificate_key example.key; keepalive_timeout 70; location / { fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:8000; ... } } server { listen 80; server_name example.com www.example.com; location / { fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:8000; ... } } The idea being that I have a secure domain, secure.example.com and a normal domain, example.com. In practice, I can go to https://example.com and http://secure.example.com. I worked around the second issue with an intermediary server: server { listen 80; server_name secure.example.com; rewrite ^(.*) https://secure.example.com$1 permanent; } But this is not an optimal solution and I'd have to create another one to redirect https on the tld to the subdomain. I feel like I must be doing something wrong if I need multiple servers like that. Why does https://example.com work when there is no server listening on 443 there? Shouldn't it just fail to connect? I'm rather confused.

  • How should I set up protection for the database against sql injection when all the php scripts are flawed?

    - by Tchalvak
I've inherited a php web app that is very insecure, with a history of sql injection. I can't fix the scripts immediately, I rather need them to be running to have the website running, and there are too many php scripts to deal with from the php end first. I do, however, have full control over the server and the software on the server, including full control over the mysql database and it's users. Let's estimate it at something like 300 scripts overall, 40 semi-private scripts, and 20 private/secure scripts. So my question is how best to go about securing the data, with the implicit assumption that sql injection from the php side (e.g. somewhere in that list of 300 scripts) is inevitable? My first-draft plan is to create multiple tiers of different permissioned users in the mysql database. In this way I can secure the data & scripts in most need of securing first ("private/secure" category), then the second tier of database tables & scripts ("semi-private"), and finally deal with the security of the rest of the php app overall (with the result of finally securing the database tables that essentially deal with "public" information, e.g. stuff that even just viewing the homepage requires). So, 3 database users (public, semi-private, and secure), with a different user connecting for each of three different groups of scripts (the secure scripts, the semi-private scripts, and the public scripts). In this way, I can prevent all access to "secure" from "public" or from "semi-private", and to "semi-private" from "public". Are there other alternatives that I should look into? If a tiered access system is the way to go, what approaches are best?

  • Procedural terrains in 3D: what has been done ? Are there common algo and/or theories about it ?

    - by jokoon
Besides programming, modeling an environment takes a great deal of time. I don't know about the work time involved, for example, in a WoW dungeon level, or other beautiful city-like, future environment, jungles, fantasy, etc, but this kind of work is made from scratch by artists. What are the techniques involved in the TorchLight level randomizer, and does other titles have similarities with this ? Is there a family name for such techniques ?

  • What is an achievable way of setting content budgets (e.g. polygon count) for level content in a 3D title?

    - by MrCranky
In answering this question for swquinn, the answer raised a more pertinent question that I'd like to hear answers to. I'll post our own strategy (promise I won't accept it as the answer), but I'd like to hear others. Specifically: how do you go about setting a sensible budget for your content team. Usually one of the very first questions asked in a development is: what's our polygon budget? Of course, these days it's rare that vertex/poly count alone is the limiting factor, instead shader complexity, fill-rate, lighting complexity, all come into play. What the content team want are some hard numbers / limits to work to such that they have a reasonable expectation that their content, once it actually gets into the engine, will not be too heavy. Given that 'it depends' isn't a particularly useful answer, I'd like to hear a strategy that allows me to give them workable limits without being a) misleading, or b) wrong.

  • PHP/Linux File Permissions

    - by user1733435
May I ask a question about file permission. I set up Ubuntu server where Apache got running. I have simple php upload form and able to upload file to /var/www/site/uploads as follows. sandbox@sandbox-virtual-machine:/var/www/site/uploads$ ll total 1736 drwxrwxrwx 2 www-data www-data 4096 Oct 18 02:53 ./ drwxrwxrwx 3 sandbox sandbox 4096 Oct 18 00:42 ../ -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data 145998 Oct 18 02:53 3d wallpaper pic.jpg -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data 166947 Oct 18 02:53 3D Wallpapers 9.jpg -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data 1451489 Oct 18 02:53 6453_3d_landscape_hd_wallpapers_green.jpg Is there anyway to upload files and they show up as -rw-r--r-- 1 sandbox sandbox 145998 Oct 18 02:53 3d wallpaper pic.jpg -rw-r--r-- 1 sandbox sandbox 166947 Oct 18 02:53 3D Wallpapers 9.jpg -rw-r--r-- 1 sandbox sandbox 1451489 Oct 18 02:53 6453_3d_landscape_hd_wallpapers_green.jpg so that I could straight away feed them to waiting/running shell script. Right now waiting script(move, checksums, rename, resize, etc) unable to do anything to uploaded files with attributes of www-data. If I just do as local account, such as sandbox@sandbox-virtual-machine:/var/www/site/uploads$touch testfile then the script is able to run as I would like to. Any suggestion would be grateful, thanks in advance as well. Thanks for everyone giving help to me,that I was able to progress. Now I am close to getting solved and append the output sandbox@sandbox-virtual-machine:/var/www/site/uploads$ ll total 388 drwxrwxrwx 2 www-data www-data 4096 Oct 18 04:22 ./ drwxrwxrwx 3 sandbox sandbox 4096 Oct 18 04:17 ../ -rw-r--r-- 1 sandbox sandbox 166947 Oct 18 04:21 3D Wallpapers 9.jpg -rw-r--r-- 1 sandbox sandbox 219808 Oct 18 04:20 adafruit_pi.png -rw-rw-r-- 1 sandbox sandbox 0 Oct 18 04:22 test How may I set permission to uploaded files like 'test' only w difference in middle group. • Exchange 2003 automatically converts text/plain emails to text/html for IMAP retrieval

    - by wfaulk
When accessing an Exchange 2003 server via IMAP, emails that were sent as text/plain (and ones that had no MIME encoding specified at all) get automatically converted to multipart/alternative with the original text/plain body and a text/html body. This is … stupid. It doesn't even bother to specify a monospaced font. The new MIME part starts like this: Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2//EN"> <HTML> <HEAD> <META HTTP-EQUIV=3D"Content-Type" CONTENT=3D"text/html; = charset=3Diso-8859-1"> <META NAME=3D"Generator" CONTENT=3D"MS Exchange Server version = 6.5.7654.12"> <TITLE>{{subject}}</TITLE> </HEAD> <BODY> <!-- Converted from text/plain format --> <BR> <P><FONT SIZE=3D2>{{body}} (All the "3D" stuff is quoted-printable encoding for an equals sign; there's nothing wrong on that front, surprisingly.) How can I make this stop?

  • CIC 2010 - Ghost Stories and Model Based Design

    - by warren.baird
I was lucky enough to attend the collaboration and interoperability congress recently. The location was very beautiful and interesting, it was held in the mountains about two hours outside Denver, at the Stanley hotel, famous both for inspiring Steven King's novel "The Shining" and for attracting a lot of attention from the "Ghost Hunters" TV show. My visit was prosaic - I didn't get to experience the ghosts the locals promised - but interesting, with some very informative sessions. I noticed one main theme - a lot of people were talking about Model Based Design (MBD), which is moving design and manufacturing away from 2d drawings and towards 3d models. 2d has some pretty deep roots in industrial manufacturing and there have been a lot of challenges encountered in making the leap to 3d. One of the challenges discussed in several sessions was how to get model information out to the non-engineers in the company, which is a topic near and dear to my heart. In the 2D space, people without access to CAD software (for example, people assembling a product on the shop floor) can be given printouts of the design - it's not particularly efficient, and it definitely isn't very green, but it tends to work. There's no direct equivalent in the 3D space. One of the ways that AutoVue is used in industrial manufacturing is to provide non-CAD users with an easy to use, interactive 3D view of their products - in some cases it's directly used by people on the shop floor, but in cases where paper is really ingrained in the process, AutoVue can be used by a technical publications person to create illustrative 2D views that can be printed that show all of the details necessary to complete the work. Are you making the move to model based design? Is AutoVue helping you with your challenges? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Ubuntu and bumblebee and intel problem

    - by LnxSlck
I have a brain teaser that i can't solve. When 12.04 (64bits) came out, i did a fresh install and then installed bumblebee with: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia And Ubuntu recognized (System Settings - Details) Intel Card for primary card, and i could launch applications with optirun. I have: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [GeForce GT 520MX] (rev ff) Now, a few days back, i did the exact same thing, installed from the same DVD everything the same, installed bumblebee the same way. Nvidia with Optirun works fine, but Ubuntu doesn't have 3D effects: root@deathstar:~# optirun /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GT 520MX/PCIe/SSE2 OpenGL version string: 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.40 Not software rendered: yes Not blacklisted: yes GLX fbconfig: yes GLX texture from pixmap: no GL npot or rect textures: yes GL vertex program: yes GL fragment program: yes GL vertex buffer object: yes GL framebuffer object: yes GL version is 1.4+: yes Unity 3D supported: no I never did anything to install Intel drivers (except installing mesa-utils), before bumblebee got everything working, but now i can't get Ubuntu to get Unity with 3D. Can someone help me please get Unity 3d working? Your help will be much appreciated

  • Suitable SDK to develop quick game?

    - by gRnt
I'm currently undertaking a personal project at home that I need to turn around inside the next few months (which working full time and still learning programming makes it a tad difficult). I'm looking for suggestions on SDK's or tools (preferably free or that come with games, similar to steam tools) that I can use to develop a "game". I'm OK with coding but have no 3D development skills at all. I've very little experience with mod tools or SDK's at all but I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of one that does the following: A decent library of prefab 3D models to build scenes. Ability to add scripting to the scene I've used Unity before and would prefer to continue to do so however I really have the worst 3D skills imaginable and can't waste time learning them. I'd be looking for pre-fab items that are both industrial and possibly more lush environments (trees etc). If it makes any difference (due to licencing and what-not) I WILL NOT be selling this game or marketing it in any way and I am a University Student if any places do educations licences. Another alternative would be to source free 3d models elsewhere but again while I'm still learning I have no idea where to look if someone could point me in the right direction I'll do the rest of the digging. Thanks

  • Can I set my Optimus Nvidia card to run Unity3D with bumblebee?

    - by manuhalo
I'd like to know whether I can run compiz on my Nvidia card to speed things up. It's a Dell XPS15 laptop but I'm mostly using it as a desktop, so battery life is not important. Apparently my Intel integrated card is able to run unity 3D, but my Nvidia GT 420M is not. Here's the output of unity_support_test, both with optirun and without it: manuhalo@Ubuntu-XPS-L501X:~$ optirun /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GT 420M/PCI/SSE2 OpenGL version string: 4.1.0 NVIDIA 280.13 Not software rendered: yes Not blacklisted: yes GLX fbconfig: yes GLX texture from pixmap: no GL npot or rect textures: yes GL vertex program: yes GL fragment program: yes GL vertex buffer object: yes GL framebuffer object: yes GL version is 1.4+: yes Unity 3D supported: no manuhalo@Ubuntu-XPS-L501X:~$ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ironlake Mobile OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.11 Not software rendered: yes Not blacklisted: yes GLX fbconfig: yes GLX texture from pixmap: yes GL npot or rect textures: yes GL vertex program: yes GL fragment program: yes GL vertex buffer object: yes GL framebuffer object: yes GL version is 1.4+: yes Unity 3D supported: yes Any ideas of why this is happening? Thanks in advance to anyone able to shed some light on this. What I have tried: Installed the v290 drivers from the x-stable PPA. Tried forcing Unity-3D to work by telling Unity to ignore the unity-support-test results i.e. gksudo gedit /etc/environment add the following UNITY_FORCE_START=1 to the end of the file.

  • SSL / HTTP / No Response to Curl

    - by Alex McHale
I am trying to send commands to a SOAP service, and getting nothing in reply. The SOAP service is at a completely separate site from either server I am testing with. I have written a dummy script with the SOAP XML embedded. When I run it at my local site, on any of three machines -- OSX, Ubuntu, or CentOS 5.3 -- it completes successfully with a good response. I then sent the script to our public host at Slicehost, where I fail to get the response back from the SOAP service. It accepts the TCP socket and proceeds with the SSL handshake. I do not however receive any valid HTTP response. This is the case whether I use my script or curl on the command line. I have rewritten the script using SOAP4R, Net::HTTP and Curb. All of which work at my local site, none of which work at the Slicehost site. I have tried to assemble the CentOS box as closely to match my Slicehost server as possible. I rebuilt the Slice to be a stock CentOS 5.3 and stock CentOS 5.4 with the same results. When I look at a tcpdump of the bad sessions on Slicehost, I see my script or curl send the XML to the remote server, and nothing comes back. When I look at the tcpdump at my local site, I see the response just fine. I have entirely disabled iptables on the Slice. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing these results? Please let me know what additional information I can furnish. Thank you! Below is a wire trace of a sample session. • Play! - Expecting a stack map frame in method controllers

    - by Benny
    I am using the Security module for my Play! application and had it working at one point, but for some reason I did something to make it stop working. I am getting the following errors: Execution exception VerifyError occured : Expecting a stack map frame in method controllers.Secure$Security.authentify(Ljava/lang/String;Ljava/lang/String;)Z at offset 33 In {module:secure}/app/controllers/Secure.java (around line 61) I saw the post below, but, even though I am using Java 7, it looks like Play! works ok with 7 now. I am using Play 1.2.4. VerifyError; Expecting a stack map frame in method controllers.Secure$Security.authentify Here is my Security controller: package controllers; import models.*; public class Security extends Secure.Security { public static boolean authenticate(String username, String password) { User user = User.find("byEmail", username).first(); return user != null && user.password.equals(password); } }
