  • debate: Is adding third party libraries to a war a good idea?

    We have a debate going on . a. The "standard" way of assembling a web app. Create a WAR with all our app artifacts and all other components like hibernate and memcached etc are deployed in the tomcat/shared/lib area. b. Create a humongous war with everything included and nothing in tomcat/shared/lib. Pros for a - It keeps things modular and the war is small. Cons for a - dependency on shared/lib has to be managed especially by the deployment process. Pros for b - All dependencies are controlled by the build process removing any room for error. Cons for b - War is really, really big. If you are deploying over a network to a huge farm, then it might have an impact. want to see what thoughts others might have about this.

  • Capturing clicks even when stopPropagation has been called (ie by 3rd party code)?

    I want to detect any click that happens on a page (to close a custom context menu). I'm using jQuery and trying to do $(document).click(function(){ ...close my context menu ... }); However, I'm using some code that calls evt.stopPropagation() in the click handlers for certain elements on the page, and those clicks aren't making it up to my top-level handler. Is there any way of capturing those clicks? Can be jQuery or not jQuery, as long as it works cross-browser.

  • Distributed development staff needing a common IP range

    I work on a development staff that is geographically distributed, mostly all throughout the state of CA, but several key members also must travel frequently. We rely quite heavily on a 3rd party provider API for a great deal of our subsystems (can't get into who it is or what they do). The 3rd party however is quite stringent on network access and have no notion of a development sandbox. Access is restricted to 2, 3 IP numbers and that's about it. Once we account for our production servers, that leaves us with an IP or two to spare for our dev team--which is still problematic as people's home IP changes, people travel, we have more than 2 devs, etc. Wide IP blocks are not permitted by the 3rd party. Nor will they allow dynamic DNS type services. There is no simple console to swap IPs on the fly either (e.g. if a dev's IP at home changes or they are on the road). As none of us are deep network experts, I'm wondering what our viable options are? Are there such things as 3rd party hosts to VPNs? Generally I think of a VPN as a mechanism to gain access to a home office, but the notion would be a 3rd party VPN that we'd all connect to and we'd register this as an IP origin w/ our 3rd party. We've considered using Amazon EC2 to effectively host a dev environment for each dev and using that to connect. Amazon only gives you so many static IPs however (I believe 5?) so this would only be a stop gap solution until our team size out strips our IP count at Amazon. Those were the only viable thoughts that I had, but again, I'm far from a networking guy. Tried searching for similar threads, but I'm not even sure I know the right vernacular to look around for.

    The .net charting controls are now built into .net 4.0. They work great in Visual Studio 2010. However, they do not work in Visual Web Developer 2010 Express (which is what I have at home.) I get the error, System.Web.HttpException: Error executing child request for ChartImg.axd. That sounds like the message from .net 3.5 if charting wasn't set up correctly. But the bottom of the same page says, "Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:4.0.30319; ASP.NET Version:4.0.30319.1" Does anyone know why this doesn't work?

    I have a TWebBrowser placed on a form with the designMode enabled. Bellow the browser I have a close button with the Caption setted to 'Clos&e'. When I am editing the contents of a document inside the WebBrowser and I press the key E the button close is called. It appears that it is treating TWebBrowser like other controls that don't handle keys (e.g. TButton). How can I solve this? Thanks in advance.

    I am very new to MVC. I've been learning to use plain HTML or HtmlHelpers, eg. for textbox, and get the value back in the Controller using Request.Form. But how do I use .NET controls with MVC? (eg. FileUpload) (The reason I ask is I am trying to use a custom control for uploading multiple files - it's Flajaxian File Uploader, if anyone knows about it.   • How to make controls "tabable" when loaded from plugin in Cocoa app?

    I have an application thad loads in plugins that have their own UI. There is an IBOutlet called ContainerView in my AppDelegate. When the plugin loads, it puts its own view (that is stored in a xib in the plugin bundle) into the Container view like so [ContainerView addSubview:viewFromPlugin]; When the view loads, everything is fine but when I press tab the only controls that get any focus are ones outside of the ContainerView and none of them inside it get focus. I've tried setting the container view as the initialFirstResponder and I've tried hooking up the nextKeyView from the last button in the tab order to the ContainerView. Thanks.

    I have UserControl 'A' with a label, and this property: /// <summary> /// Gets or Sets the text of the control /// </summary> [ Browsable(true), EditorBrowsable(EditorBrowsableState.Always), Category("Appearance") ] public override string Text { get { return uxLabel.Text; } set { uxLabel.Text = value; } } I then have UserControl 'B' which has UserControl 'A' on it, and I set the Text Property to "My Example Label" in the designer. Then, I have my MainForm, which has UserControl 'B' on it. Each time I do a build or run, the Text property of UserControl 'A' is reset to its default value. I suppose this is because since I am doing a rebuild, it rebuilds both UserControl 'A' and 'B', thus causing the problem. How can I go about a better approach to design pattern to avoid this type of behavior when working with tightly bound controls and forms in a application?

    I am using a Repeater which contains a placeholder. The placeholder is bound to my database and each ItemTemplate contains 1-6 radiobuttons depending on what the database returns. I want to determine the alpha channel value of the mouse cursor when I click on any portion of this image.   • I have a BHO in c++ and i need to block some keyboard controls (Ctrl-o) in a i-frame.

    I need to know of a way to prevent the user to 'open a new url' (with Ctrl-o) as soon as he has the focus on my sidebar (right-sided iframe). In fact, my sidebar offers some controls and the user should not be able to 'navigate' to other website through the sidebar. I'm using a bho in C++ using ATL(active template library), but maybe if anyone knows of a simplier way like in JS(javascript) or PHP(Hypertext Preprocessor) ? Any ideas is appreciated.   • How can I retrieve the values of controls in the form that posted?

    I know this has got to be the simplest-sounding question ever asked about ASP.Net but I'm baffled. I have a form wherein my visitor will enter name, address, etc. Then I am POSTing that form via the PostBackUrl property of my Submit button to another page, where the fields are supposed to be all re-formed into new hidden fields, then POSTed again to Paypal. My problem is I cannot get at the values entered by the visitor in the original page. Any time I put in "runat='server'", ASP.Net completely changes the ID of the control, making it impossible to figure out how to access. In the POSTed form I tried Request.Form["_txtFirstName"] and that turned up null. Then I tried ((TextBox)PreviousPage.FindControl("_txtFirstName")).Text and that was null, too. I've tried variations on those. I cannot figure out how I'm supposed to get at these controls. Why does this stuff need to be so difficult?

    I need to provide a way to allow users to select 1 Subject, but the subjects are grouped into Qualifications and so I want to show a heading for each 'group'. My first thought is an asp:RadioButtonList as that provides a list of options from which only one can be selected but there's no means to add break the list up with headings. So I tried the following code - but I can't see that the LiteralControl is being added, which makes me think it's not a valid approach.     My problem is about tap detection. I have a uiviewcontroller and there are some controls on uiview (labels, buttons, tableview, imageview, etc..) When I tap the uibutton I display a small uiview (200x150), if the user taps the uibuttons in smallview I hide the smallview. But I can't hide the uiview if the user taps the background. I tried this code.. -(void) touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event{ //NSLog(@"Touches began."); [self hideShareView]; } It doesn't work if I tap the another button in the uiviewcontrols view. I just want my uiviewcontrol's uiview to react first. I think its about firstResponder but I dont know how to set it first. edit: i want it to work like a uiPopover in ipad.

    I am a beginner in Flash Actionscript 3.0 programming. I am trying to create smooth keyboard controls for player movement in a game. I'm currently using addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN) listening for a keyboard key press and then within the handler function moving a graphic by adding a number to its .x or .y property. This creates a slow, sluggish jerk at the beginning. I know there's a smoother, more responsive way to do this but have no idea where to begin. Any help would be appreciated!
