  I have a simple one dimmensional array of integer values that represent a physical set of part values I have to work with. I then calculate and ideal value mathematically. How could I write an efficient search algorithm that will find the smallest abosulte difference from my ideal value in the array? The array is predetermined and constant, so it can be sorted however I need. Example Lookup array: 100, 152, 256, 282, 300 Searching for an ideal value of 125 would find 100 in the array, whereas 127 would find 152. The actual lookup array will be about 250 items long and never change.

  I am using PHP/MYSQL/JQUERY. I have a site which have news section. On news details page, I want to add star rating system which will allow user to rate the news story. I am using this jquery rating system http://www.fyneworks.com/jquery/star-rating/ Now, I am not getting what will be the database structure and then what I need to code in PHP. I need what logic will be applied for this, like if 1000 people voted for the article, some given rating as 2 or 3 or1 or 5. Then Where I should be storing (db structure) this all and what I'll calculate (in php code). If someone has any article which shows this concept please provide.   Hi, I'm writing a Maven plugin that merges CSS files together. So all the CSS files that match /foo/bar/*.css might get merged to /foo/merged.css. A concern is that in a file such as /foo/bar/baz.css there might be a property such as: background: url("images/pic.jpg") So when the file is merged into /foo/merged.css this will need to be changed to background: url("bar/images/pic.jpg") The recalculated URL obviously depends on 3 factors: original URL original CSS file location merged CSS file location Assuming that the original and merged CSS files are both on the same filesystem, is there a general formula (or Java library) that can be used to calculate the new url given these 3 inputs?   hello. just out of curiosity I tried to do the following, which turned out to be not so obvious to me; Suppose I have nested loops with runtime bounds, for example: t = 0 // trip count for l in 0:N for k in 0:N for j in max(l,k):N for i in k:j+1 t += 1 t is loop trip count is there a general algorithm/way (better than N^4 obviously) to calculate loop trip count? I am working on the assumption that the iteration bounds depend only on constant or previous loop variables.

In order to zoom in the scene, I can do that by eather: - Fix the cameraposition and the cameratarget and change the cameraviewangle.or - Fix the cameratarget and the cameraview angle and moving the camera along the viewing line (defined by the cameraPosition and the cameraTarget). I know how to set the values of cameraposition CameraTarget and viewangle, but I do not how to define the optimal view angle. The following statement retrieves Max("invoice_id") var ret = session .CreateCriteria<Invoice>() .SetProjection(Projections.Max("invoice_id")) .UniqueResult(); but in my case the field invoice_id is made in this way: 12345.10 where 12345 is the invoice number, and 10 refers to the current year (2010). So I need to calculate the Max function only over the first 5 digits. How can I do it?

• Less Mathematical Approaches to Machine Learning?

  Out of curiosity, I've been reading up a bit on the field of Machine Learning, and I'm surprised at the amount of computation and mathematics involved. One book I'm reading through uses advanced concepts such as Ring Theory and PDEs (note: the only thing I know about PDEs is that they use that funny looking character). This strikes me as odd considering that mathematics itself is a hard thing to "learn." Are there any branches of Machine Learning that use different approaches? I would think that a approaches relying more on logic, memory, construction of unfounded assumptions, and over-generalizations would be a better way to go, since that seems more like the way animals think. Animals don't (explicitly) calculate probabilities and statistics; at least as far as I know.

  I am writing a networking application. It has some unxpected lags. I need to calculate some figures but I cant find an information - how many bits can be transferes through Ethernet connection at each tick. I know that the resulting transfer rate is 100Mbps/1Gbps. But ethernet should use hardware ticks to sync both ends I suppose. So it moves data in ticks. So the question is how many ticks per second or how many bits per one tick used in ethernet. The actual connection is 100 Mbps full-duplex.

Though I'm using an iterator as I've been told many times that's good programming : and I'm wondering if the iterator has a "index" number of something which I can use to calculate the new X position? But my question is how exactly can i calculate the AVERAGE of $total price of all given in results? Meaning for example i have 5 rows so this would mean 5 total prices. How exactly can i acces this value and count everything up / 5? This will happen in a other page so i would like to use sessions for this. /5 simply by count($_Session["table"]) , but really not sure about the other values. Kind Regards.

• Either .each do or .all isn't working how I think it should

  So whenever someone rates a shop, I want the Shop model to calculate its new average rating and store that in the database (instead of calculating the average every time someone looks at it). So I wrote the segment of code that follows, and it doesn't work. The loop always iterates exactly once, no matter how many shop_ratings in the database exist that have the shop's id as their shop_id. I played around with it a bit and found that every time a new rating is submitted the function is called successfully, but it only runs the loop once and sets the average to what the first rating was.   I'm currently trying to build a RDP client in python and I came across the following issue with a len check; From: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc240836%28v=prot.10%29.aspx "81 2a - ConnectData::connectPDU length = 298 bytes Since the most significant bit of the first byte (0x81) is set to 1 and the following bit is set to 0, the length is given by the low six bits of the first byte and the second byte. Hence, the value is 0x12a, which is 298 bytes." This sounds weird. For normal len checks, I'm simply using : struct.pack("h",len(str(PacketLen))) but in this case, I really don't see how I can calculate the len as described above. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated !

• getting the value of a filter at an arbitrary time

  Context: I'm trying to improve the values returned by the iPhone CLLocationManager, although this is a more generally applicable problem. The key is that CLLocationManger returns data on current velocity as and when it feels like it, rather than at a fixed sample rate. I'd like to use a feedback equation to improve accuracy v=(k*v)+(1-k)*currentVelocity where currentVelocity is the speed returned by didUpdateToLocation:fromLocation: and v is the output velocity (and also used for the feedback element). Because of the "as and when" nature of didUpdateToLocation:fromLocation: I could calculate the time interval since it was last called, and do something like for (i=0;i<timeintervalsincelastcalled;i++) v=(k*v)+(1-k)*currentVelocity which would work, but is wasteful of cycles. Especially as I probably want timeintervalsincelastcalled to be measured as 10ths of a second. Is there a way to solve this without the loop ? i.e. rework (integrate?) the formula so I put an interval into the equation and get the same answer as I would have by iteration ?

• How can I speed up Netbeans Task Marker resolution?

  I'm trying to quickly navigate and fix problems in code in Netbeans, and it just takes too long. I'll fix a problem, and it will take seconds to re-compile. While this is happening, the marker remains, and all the others that depend on it will too (requiring multiple next-marker key strokes to get to a "new" problem). If I'm doing a fix that changes the number of lines (e.g. organise imports), the markers will navigate to the wrong place, even though the correct text is underlined. Is there a way to speed this up? I presume it's because it's doing a full file compilation via javac to calculate the markers. BUT the information is available in netbeans, because the correct text is underlined, even when the compilation occurs.
