• Automatic Excel Script

  I am a 6th year medical student and I'm working on my thesis. I have no experience with programming whatsoever, a friend recommended me to post my question here. I am strugling with the following problem: I have data of 400 patients, stored in 400 different excel files. Each file contains 34 columns in a specific order, let's say A to Z. The order is the same in each of these 400 files. Now I need to a make a new excel document that contains the first column of each patient. So I need all the first columns of my 400 different excel files, lined up next to each other in a new document. Preferebally in the form of a automatic script. After that I want to do the exact same thing but for the second column, then the third and so on. This is probably a problem that has already been solved. Otherwise could someone help me out? You have my thanks!

• Automatic LaTex document generation from Excel spreadsheet

  I have some data in an excel file from which I have to generate a report. I repeat this task fairly regularly and am looking to automate it. I have a LaTeX project into which I usually just copy data by hand, export the necessary worksheets as pdfs and add them to my LaTeX project and compile with pdflatex. It has occured to me that there must be a way to automate this process. Is there an efficient way to export the data from excel and into a LaTeX project, possibly a vba script in excel could run the process? Also, it doesn't have to be LaTeX, I'm not all that experienced with MS office's more advanced features is there some way akin to a mail merge that I could achieve this with? In some ways this might be better in case I have to pass the work on to someone who doesn't know LaTeX. Thanks.

  The compare function in Word 2007 is very handy -- is there a similar capability in Excel 2007? I can't seem to find it... The documents I'm trying to compare are essentially two versions of the same content. Unfortunately, "Track Changes" has not been used. If file comparison not a built-in feature, what alternatives are out there for doing this? • Getting Excel to handle CRLF's correctly in CSV

  I am creating CSV files to be opened in Excel. The rows are separated by CRLF and that's fine, but some of the input data contains CRLF data in it as well. Per the usual standards, I surround them with quotes, but Excel doesn't seem to recognize the CR character and puts a little box with a question mark in it instead. I can strip the CR's out of the CSV file, but it seems like an unnecessary step. Is there an easy way to get Excel to recognize a CRLF inside a row of a CSV file?

  Is it possible in Excel to have a font that automatically generates a 'Data Matrix'-Code from a text string. (As it is possible for usual Barcodes) Would I perhaps have to use a Add-In, because the font isn't "linear" or "one-dimensional" as barcodes are? EDIT: I found a solution (using a pretty expensive software): I simply used "NiceLabel", which is capable of using XLS-Tables as databases. Then I generated the Codes (Could be Barcodes, QR-Codes, Data Matrix Codes) from the cells in Excel. This solution doesn't automatically generate a 2D-Code into an Excel-Cell but fits for my personal needs.

  I want to put a string in an excel sheet from my Export to excel function. However my string is as follows: string : Red, red wine Go to my head Make me forget that I Still need and on my excel I get unexpected results , column change after comma and also column change when there is no full stop in front of an UPPER CASE alphabet. The Upper case alphabets (without a full stop before them) are also causing this (Go , Make . Still) How can I solve this issue ? • Why does Excel 2010 automatically reformat numbers?

  Excel 2010 is automatically reformatting numbers/cells where a specific number format has already been applied. Whenever I access or modify the cell contents, Excel reformats by changing the number of decimal places to 2. I've already gone into file \ options \ advanced \ and made sure that the option to automatically add decimal places is unselected, but Excel still automatically makes the change. Very time consuming to continue reselecting number formats each time the cell contents are changed/accessed. Any ideas? Thx!

• Xenserver 5.5 U2 a bit unstable with an unstable W2003 VM

  In the last week I had to reboot the host system twice and the second one by means of the power button. The system is a Dell PE 6950 (4 Opteron dual core, 2,8 Ghz, 16 GB RAM, 900 GB disk in a RAID 10 array composed by 4 450GB 15000 rpm disks) with XenServer 5.5 U2. We're installing it and at now there are working in production a 2003 32 bit Windows server VM with 2 GB RAM, 3 vcpu and about 200 GB disk in 4 partition (12 GB boot, 20 GB program, 80 GB user data, 80 GB other data). The first time I was compressing many Windows 2003 folders (some tens GB by means of W2003 compressed folder option) from a Windows remote console and some hours before my colleague installed Backup Exec agent that was alredy installed and that required a reboot (that was pending). The console stopped responding, it was no more possible to connect by means of remote console or by means of the console of the XenCentre, it was still possible from the network to use the shared folder of the VM and the programs on it (2 db and a GIS program), but the print server didn't work any more and I couldn't give remote reboot from other domain controller hosts. I couldn't stop the virtual machine neither from the XenCentre, neither from the command line of the host also forcing the reboot. I had to reboot the host server. Yesterday it has been worst. I installed a template of another VM, CentOS 5.3 and then, put the DVD in the drive of the host. Then, before the install and after the boot I checked for defect the DVD and the W2003 VM began to respond slowly (I was connected by means of an administration remote console) the task manager showed only mid or low load, it is, only the first of the 3 vcpu was loaded (about 70%), while the other two were about at 20% and also the disk I/O was not so heavy. Then the users were not so happy because they couldn't any more use the MS word docs on the server. I immediately stopped the check of the DVD (to do that I had to force the stop of such Centos 5.3 VM), then some users could again use their docs, but other had still problems, so I decided to reboot the VM, but it doesn't stopped, neither from XenCenter, neither from command line, neither forcing the reboot. Then I tried to reboot of the host, but it didn't worked, neither from the XenCentre, neither from the host prompt (shutdown -r now as root: it told that it was shutting down, but then it didn't did that). So I had to power off by means of the power button of the server (before I tried some Magic SyS REQ, but I saw that Xen isn't compiled with this option enabled). What could you suggest about my problem, what can I look, search and see? In the W2003 VM logs there are no errors or warning to explain what happened. • ColdFusion Server crash after thousands of HTTP requests

  We are running ColdFusion 8 on a windows server 2003 VPS with an API that exposes student records to a partner API through a connector. Our API returns around 50k student records serialized in XML format pretty seamlessly. My question originates when something very frightening happened today when we tested our connector to our partners API. Our entire website and web host went down. We assumed that our host was just having some issues and after 4 hours with no resolution and no response from their customer service we finally got a response from them claiming that they had an "unauthorized user" in their network. After our server was back up we were unable to connect to our website as if the web service or coldfusion itself had froze. This is really where my concern comes from as I fear we may have overloaded the web service. As I mentioned before we tried sending over 50k HTTP POST requests over to our partner's API, however everything stopped after around 1.6k Is this bad practice or is there some sort of rate limiting I can relax somewhere in server configuration? We managed to find a workaround, but it bypasses our connector which is critical to our design. This would have been a one time deal as the purpose of so many requests was to populate our partner's website with current data, after that hourly syncs will keep requests down to around 100 per hour. UPDATE Our partner API is owned and operated by Pardot. We are converting students to prospects by passing student data to their API which unfortunately only seems to accept one student at a time. For that reason we have to do all 50k requests individually. Our server has 4GB of RAM, an Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.8GHz running Windows Server 2003 SP2. I monitored the server during a 100 student sync, a 400 student sync, and a 1.4k student sync with the following results: 100 students - 2.25GB of Memory, 30-40% CPU utilization, 0.2-0.3% network bandwidth 400 students - 2.30GB of Memory, 30-50% CPU utilization, 0.2-1.0% network bandwidth 1.4k students - 2.30GB of Memory, 30-70% CPU utilization, 0.2-1.0% network bandwidth I know this is a far cry from 50k students, but I don't want to risk taking down our CMS system again assuming that was the cause. • Windows Server 2003 - Handling hundreds of simultaneous downloads

  At the moment I have a single server with 4 1TB hard disks, daily I haver over 150 MP3 music files uploaded (around 80mb each). At busy periods there is over 300 people streaming / downloading these mixes all at once, 75% of the activity is on the most recently uploaded stuff which is all on a single hard disk. My read speads on the hard disk are very low due to such high activity of 200+ reads all happening at the same time on a single hard disk (ran some tests with HDTach). What would be a logical solution to solve this, a couple of ideas I had are: Load balance with another server Install faster hard disks (what are best these days? SCSI / SATA) Spread the most accessed files over the 4 drives so it is sharing the load between all 4 disks, instead of all the most accessed (most recent) all on the most recently installed drive. Obviouslly load balance is the most expensive option, but would it dramatically help? Some help on this situation would be great!

• TCP RST Reset Every 5 Minutes on Windows 2003 sp2

  Hey, Recently I had a web developer come to me and ask why he was receiving connection errors in his app that was accessing a sql database. So, I went through my normal trouble shooting steps to isolate or reproduce the issue. I discovered that if I connected to the database using Query Analyzer and let the connection idle for 5 minutes it would disconnect. Meaning... I would no longer be able to refresh my tables or any other object/node within the object browser in Query Analyzer. I would have to right click on the instance and refresh for it to re-establish the connection. Next I went to wireshark and ran a capture on the client pc's nic card. Sure enough it was receiving a TCP RST reset every 5 min if the connection idled longer than 5 min. I also ran a capture on the SQL Server and noticed the TCP RST reset command as well. Attached below is the capture from the client Machine. If someone could please assist... That would be great. -I checked all settings within SQL Server 2000 against another server and they all seem to be the same. -Issue does not occur if I connect to any other SQL server 2000 server. -Issue does not occur if connecting to SQL on the server itself... so only over the network. -I consulted with network team and this is the response back: There are no firewalls or proxies in between SQL Server and your desktop. The traffic flows like this: Desktop-Access Switch-Distro Switch-Core Switch-Datacenter Switch-SQL Server None of the switches have security ACL’s configured on them. Also they stated that NAT was not turned on. -Issue does not occur with SQL server Enterprise Manager. -Ran SQL Profiler at the same time and did not see anything out of the ordinary during the RST I HAVE SEARCHED HIGH AND LOW ON GOOGLE FOR A RESOLUTION FOR THIS ISSUE. NO LUCK! My questions are: What could be causing this? Wrong Sequence number? setting in a router or switch the network team may have over looked? Setting within Windows? Setting within SQL Server 2000 that I have over looked? Better way to utilize Wireshark to find more answers? RST is about 10 from the bottom. • Cannot run "Automation Anywhere" exe files from console (session 0) on Windows Server 2003 64 bit

  I have a simple exe created from an Automation Anywhere task that displays a message box saying hello world. I created this simple exe just for debugging the following issue. When I log in to the console (session 0), and run the Automation Anywhere created executable, it starts to run the task, it shows up in the applications and processes list in the task manager and it shows the two "loading..." windows briefly on the screen, just like normal. But after that, nothing happens... the "hello world" message does not show up. The exe is done and is removed from the application and process list in the task manager. The user I am logged in as, has admin rights and the machine uses "autologin" to automatically log in using this profile when it starts up. If I right click on the exe and "run as" another admin user, the exe runs properly, showing the "hello world" message. Also, if I log into the server in a new session, with the original user (the one that has the problems in session 0), and then run the exe, it runs properly and shows the "hello world". It works fine in any session other than the console session. There is something about the console session that is causing the exe not to run properly... even though it does appear to start running the exe. I should also mention that everything was working fine until Monday at midnight, after which none of the executables could be run successfully. Nothing was changed on the server and no updates were installed. I have since installed windows updates, but that didn't change anything. Looking for some advice on how to get these executables working in the console session again. Thanks!

• MS Access 2003 - Format a Number with Commas AND Auto-Decimal

  On a report I have a control which is bound to a column which can have up to 3 decimal places. I want the number to format with commas separating thousands and millions, but I also want the number of decimal places to be automatic, so that if there is no decimal portion then no decimal at all is shown. 1234.567 -> 1,234.567 1234.560 -> 1,234.56 1234.500 -> 1,234.5 1234.000 -> 1,234 General format will give me the auto decimal places but no commas. Standard format gives the comma but is fixed to 2 decimal places. Doing my own =Format(Number, "#,##0.#") leaves the decimal point in and doesn't align properly, with extra space on the right of the number. Do I have to write my own VB function to give the format I want? It seems silly that Access (apparently) can't do this out of the box.   Hello, Im having DNS issues on my network. My DC is my DNS server 10.76.4.11 and recently I configured a forwarder to 10.4.36.10. My workstations are not working because they cannot resolve the domain controller name because of DNS. an ipconfig /all reveals that they know the IP of the DNS server is 10.76.4.11, but if I nslookup 10.76.4.11 it forwards the request to 10.4.36.10 and goes nowhere. I have since removed the forwarder, but still any nslookup requests on workstations are going to 10.4.36.10. If I nslookup 10.76.4.11 on the server it can resolve its name, but for some reason when it receives the same request from workstations it doesnt know what to do. All the A, CNAME records etc are correct. DHCP's DNS is set correctly, GPOs are correct (even though they cant refresh cos of this problem!), the servers network adapter has its DNS set to 10.76.4.11. Just don't know. Very confused.

• Can't get an IBM xSeries 345 server to load Windows Server 2003 using ServerGuide utility

  I have a client that has an IBM xSeries 345 eServer. Per the IBM support website, I have downloaded the ServerGuide Setup 7.4.17 installation ISO and burned a bootable CD. The CD boots fine and loads the utility. I walk through the following screens without any issue: Set the date and Time Detect the IBM ServeRAID card and install the latest firmware Clear the hard disks Set up the RAID array The next step is format the NOS partition. I select my partition size and the utility goes through the following steps: Creating NOS partition Formatting NOS partition (NTFS) Copying W32 files The copying W32 files takes about 10 minutes. I see the CD drive and disks working hard. When the copying is complete, I'm taken to a blank page just NOS Partitioning at the top. At the bottom of the screen are the familiar Back and Exit buttons. I see the place where the Next button should be, and if I click on it I can tell there is something there, but the space is empty. No button is displayed and clicking the empty spot doesn't ever take me to the next screen. I can't load the OS until I get past this part. I have already tried: Burning multiple copies and versions of the ServerGuide CD Letting the final screen just sit there over the weekend thinking it might advance after syncing the drives or something Has anybody else seen this? But now when I start Access I can't find the menu bars where I can usually see the File, Edit etc. I tried to restore the default, the menu bar can't be found under the customize toolbar. In IIS7 you can define users within the ASP.NET group with click on .NET users and it automatically creates a ms sql server db in background in the website directory. • Server 2003 crashing intermittently, want to transfer function to other DC

  I have a Win2003R2 server that is intermittently crashing after some virus were introduced. I'm sure all virus have been cleaned thanks to Malwarebytes (were using McAfee - useless). When it crashes you can't login (local or remote) but can still access files remotely and ping it. After a while even file sharing stops and have to kill power to restart it (no BSOD) I need to either fix it (tried to reinstall SP2 and I tried to reinstall windows in repair mode but the repair option was not available when I booted from installation disks) or move it's functionality to another DC (another 2003R2 server). The server that's crashing is old with SCSI drives while the new server uses SATA drives and faster so it seems like a good idea to just transfer roles and ditch the old box. Finding replacement SCSI drives looks expensive if they ever fail. What would I need to transfer roles. If I just move the 5 FSMO roles and copy over the file shares. Would the new server have enough to run without the old server? Never done something like this, just want some tips. Thanks.

• Referencing a specific figure in Microsoft Word 2003

  Referring to the screenshot below: I want to be able to reference the figure in the body of the text properly without having to change them manually every time I add a figure label before that body of text. However, I don't know how to do it aside from adding caption labels, which won't work for cases where I have more than one reference to the figure (at least I don't know how to do that properly anyway). • Windows 2003 DNS updates from ISC DHCP server

  We have a very mixed network, with most clients being Debian Lenny, the rest Windows XP/Vista/7. The network itself is split into two segments (for technical reasons) called "corporate" and "engineering". On the "corporate" side all clients get their IP addresses from a Windows DHCP server and the dynamic updates into the Windows DNS work just fine. On the "engineering" side, clients get their IP addresses from a linux machine running the standard ISC DHCP server. Although this server is configured to do dynamic DNS updates, they actually don't work. Anybody got any advice on how to fix this? Please note: dynamic updates from the clients directly into the DNS would work, but are not an option for us. So this is strictly on how make this work from an ISC DHCP server to a Windows DNS server.

• Can't get an IBM xSeries 345 server to load Windows Server 2003 using ServerGuide utility

  I have a client that has an IBM xSeries 345 eServer. Per the IBM support website, I have downloaded the ServerGuide Setup 7.4.17 installation ISO and burned a bootable CD. The CD boots fine and loads the utility. I walk through the following screens without any issue: Set the date and Time Detect the IBM ServeRAID card and install the latest firmware Clear the hard disks Set up the RAID array The next step is format the NOS partition. I select my partition size and the utility goes through the following steps: Creating NOS partition Formatting NOS partition (NTFS) Copying W32 files The copying W32 files takes about 10 minutes. I see the CD drive and disks working hard. When the copying is complete, I'm taken to a blank page just NOS Partitioning at the top. At the bottom of the screen are the familiar Back and Exit buttons. I see the place where the Next button should be, and if I click on it I can tell there is something there, but the space is empty. No button is displayed and clicking the empty spot doesn't ever take me to the next screen. I can't load the OS until I get past this part. I have already tried: Burning multiple copies and versions of the ServerGuide CD Letting the final screen just sit there over the weekend thinking it might advance after syncing the drives or something Has anybody else seen this? I'm really at a loss here.

• Getting Squid to authenticate with kerberos and Windows 2008/2003/7/XP

  This is something I setup recently and was quite a big pain. My environment was getting squid to authenticate a Windows 7 client against a Windows 2008 Server invisibly. NTLM is not really an option, as using it requires a registry change on each client. MS have been recommending Kerberos since Windows 2000, so it's finally time to get with the program. Many, many thanks to Markus Moeller of the Squid mailing lists for helping to get this working.
