• SQL log shipping for reporting

  I would like to create a read-only copy of my SQL Server 2008 database on a secondary server for reporting and analysis. I've been testing log shipping, configured to run every 5 minutes or so. Alas, there appears to be a stumbling block, for exclusive access is required on the target database during the restore, which in turn requires killing all active connections. This is far from ideal, especially if a user is in the middle of running a report. Any better suggestions? Edit : I'm doing this on the Express edition.

• ubuntu automount: only mounting drives as root?

  I'm sharing the /mount dir with smb so users on my network can access use drives added to my linux box. Users are able to read files but not write, modify or delete files or directories. I'm using ubuntu 10.04 server edition with halevt installed for usb auto mounting. Afaik halevt is automounting the drives to /media/ but the drives are showing up as: drwxrwxr-x 1 root root 20480 2010-12-29 20:40 disk drwxrwxr-x 1 root root 24576 2010-12-21 17:20 Sparta mount gives me: /dev/sda1 on /boot type ext2 (rw) /dev/sdb1 on /media/disk type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,sync,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions) /dev/sdc1 on /media/Sparta type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,sync,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions) When I umount the drives, the folders /media/disk and /media/Sparta are both removed. I tried changing the permissions with chown to nobody:nogroup but it doesn't work (which I assume is because they are ntfs drives).

  Hello, I'm looking for the proper way to share the Coldfusion engine for all my Virtual Hosts. My question is, is there any way to share the same Coldfusion instance for every virtual host, mantaining the sites webroot outside of the cfusion folder?   We just purchased a Windows-based VPS that I've been tasked to set up as a web server. It's running Windows 2003 Server Datacenter Edition. I downloaded the latest version of Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and installed it, but when I try to run it I'm given an error message "Failed to create empty document." A search on Google gave the suggestion to change the path of the TEMP and TMP environment variables, which I tried but it made no difference. I also saw suggestions that this problem is caused by MMC, but I was just in MMC setting up a user account. What am I missing?

• How to get top command output to show rake arguments?

  In the past, all of our servers have automatically shown command arguments passed to rake when we view them in top. For example: But on this particular server, we get this instead (picture is top running, showing the rake command, but not showing any of the arguments that had been passed to rake): Both servers are running Ubuntu (though the server without rake commands is a newer flavor of ubuntu). Both run rake through ruby enterprise edition (as powered by rvm). Can't seem to find any documentation on how top chooses what to show in the "command" column, other than the obvious "more data/less data" toggle (all screenshots are shown with the extra data enabled. Anyone encountered anything similar to this?

  I'm having a great problem, I've installed Linux mint debian edition (LMDE), and following this tutorial http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/161 I did installed the network driver. The available connections appears to me, but when i try to connect to my connection at first time, I got this message: "(4) Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." And the following tries, I got this another message: "(32) Insufficient privileges." I'm accepting ideas. Thanks.

• Trouble installing ubuntu server on virtualbox (osx)

  Hello all, I'm trying to install lucid lynx 10.04.2 server on a virtualbox on snow leopard. I have 2 server iso files freshly downloaded one i386 and one 64bit. When I try to start the virtual machine with either one set to be the cd drive I'm getting the same error: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Ub. Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT). Unknown error creating VM (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT). Couldn't find anything on it on google so I'm trying to see if anyone else has dealt with this issue. Thanks much in advance! edit: just downloaded the 32bit desktop edition to same avail edit2: ran Disk Utility' replair permissions then restarted. New error VERR_SUPLIB_WORLD_WRITABLE (instead of VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT)

• Good/Better config for MySQL on an EC2 Large Instance

  I have an EC2 Large instance dedicated to MySQL. It will be serving a Joomla/Magento combo so it has a blend of InnoDB and MyISAM tables. I have only worked with MyISAM in the past and am therefore unfamiliar with the settings InnoDB uses. Experiments so far have been less than fruitful, as I keep causing the InnoDB engine to be disabled. My instance is running Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit server edition and has ~7.5G of ram. MySQL is currently using ~0.6% of that, with somewhat poor performance. I would like to configure it to use as much of the system RAM as is reasonable. Testing some settings I learned that the InnoDB logs can't collectively be larger than 4G. Would anyone be able to provide some base InnoDB and MyISAM settings to get my started. Thank you Tim

• How do I disable other monitors while running games in Wine?

  My current setup is: * Dual GTS 250 video cards * 3 Monitors * Used nvidia-settings to run each monitor as a separate x session * This is all running on Linux Mint Debian Edition When running games (Starcraft II) in Wine via PlayOnLinux, I've found that the mouse does not get locked. I already tried various solutions littered across the web and none work so I'd rather just disable my other two monitors while playing. Does anyone know of a method where I can turn off my other two monitors (not my primary monitor) while running Wine and then turn then back on afterwards? I don't mind having to manually run a script before and after gaming. Thanks.

• How to transfer files and settings from Windows 7 x64 to Windows 2008 R2?

  If I want to re-install Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit (or any other edition of Windows 7), I'd typically use "Windows Easy Transfer" utility built in the OS to backup and restore my files and settings. But in my case, I'm migrating to Windows Server 2008 R2. If I remember well -having worked on both Windows 2008/2008R2 before- "Windows Easy Transfer" is NOT installed on Windows server, and it doesn't even understand the format of the backup file it generates (".MIG" file). I can't remember for sure whether this is true, is it? And if it's true, what is the alternative for transferring the files and more importantly program settings to Windows 2008 R2? Of course I'm aware of the "manual" option and that automatic transfer sure will not transfer everything. Options??

• Apache Passenger can't find gem

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and I've transferred over some sites built in Sinatra. I've set up Phusion passenger, but when I visit the sites I'm getting a Passenger LoadError claiming that passenger has 'no such file to load -- sinatra' yet when I run gem list or sudo gem list, I clearly see sinatra listed. Why can't passenger find this gem? • Loadbalance UDP traffic with session affinity and way to take servers in & out of rotation

  What is the best way to go about load balancing UDP traffic among a whole bunch of servers, while keeping session affinity based on the users' IP? I need to also be able to take servers in and out of rotation for new clients, so when they join for the first time, they get put on a server in a list of available servers, and clients already connected would stay connected to their specific server. I have written the software to maintain a list, but I can't seem to find anything that would perform this functionality. If you need the context, this is to facilitate game tournaments for Minecraft: Pocket Edition, which is done with UDP traffic, I cannot change the protocol. And, because tournaments open and close, I need to be able to place players on their proper servers. Performance is also a priority, I have a program to do this but it is very bloated and slow. Kaspersky may be another solution but whether should i go for Internet Security or Anti-virus? Alternatively, do you have any ideas for setting up one at home using a proxy with an auto updating list? UPDATE - AutoUpdating list so the new sites are categorized and downloaded and the filtering is done by category instead of per site e.g. peerblock works this way Appliance as in a small dedicated hardware or device to perform this task, like WD TV live or Acer Aspire Revo with the media center edition I'd be ok with setting up Squid / Linux / SquidGuard even if i'm not familiar with *nix but ideally a small form factor pc with dual nic's would be ideal so it can be out of sight for the most part !

• installer hanging during .net 4.5 framework install

  I am having trouble installing Visual studio 2012 Premium Edition. I kick off the installer for it but it hangs when installing .net 4.5 framework. I have left it for hours but there is no progression in the progress bar. I have downloaded the .net 4.5 framework separately and tried to install that from msi but that also hangs similarly. The only way to kill it is by killing the process. Any ideas how I could resolve this issue, or what I need to do to trouble shoot it further? Any tips?

  What backup solutions would you recommend when using SQL Server 2008 Express? I'm pretty new to SQL Server, but as I'm coming from an MySQL background I thought of setting up replication on another computer and just take Xcopy backups of that server. But unfortunately replication is not available in the Express Edition. The site is heavily accessed, so there has to be no delays and downtime. I'm also thinking of doing a backup twice a day or something. What would you recommend? I have multiple computers I can use, but I don't know if that helps me since I'm using the Express version.

  I have two machines - one is running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit and the other is running Windows 7 Starter Edition (32-bit). The Ubuntu machine is connected to the Internet via the eth0 interface. That machine also has a wireless network interface (wlan0) that is currently functioning as an ad-hoc network. I can connect to the ad-hoc network just fine with the Windows machine but each time I wish to do so, I must manually initiate the connection and enter the password. Is there some way to instruct Windows to automatically connect to this network (an option I have for standard wireless networks but not ad-hoc networks)?

• How to Recover HDD Formatted by "Create a Recovery Drive" Tool of Windows 8.1?

  I have 2 TB USB HDD which had these drives F: about 1 TB with 750 GB data H: about 120 GB with 60 GB data I: about 780 GB with 250 GB data (For TV: It was raw in Windows but visible in the Smart TV) I took 521 MB from last part of H to get new G drive. Then I run "Create a Recovery Drive" tool of Windows 8.1 and chose G drive. It said all data in the drive will be deleted. I thought it is just G drive but it deleted my whole HDD. It created 32 GB new F drive with writing 337 MB on it and rest of HDD is unallocated. I tried these programs to get my first 3 drives but non of them helped for getting 1st partition. • How to run MS C++ 6.0 on Windows 7

  I have MS Windows C++ version 6.0 on XP. I'd like to move it to a Windows 7 platform but when I try to install it there I get some garbage about it not being compatible, proceed at your own risk etc. When I proceed, it (not surprisingly) doesn't work. Is there a way to convince these Microsoft tools to play nice with each other? I have Win7 home edition, but I would be willing to upgrade to Win7 Pro IF I knew it would work under the "XP emulation" mode. Failing both those options, what is the least expensive "upgrade" path for C++? I don't need a bunch of other junk, just the C++ compiler. The goal is to retire my XP system since currently the only reason I keep it is to compile C++ programs that eventually are run under Win7. Thanks, Hotei
