  • Get Ready For C# 4.0!

Visual Studio 2010 is here! And of course this means that C# 4.0 is also here. Lets do a quick review of the new language features added in this release. Dynamic The dynamic keyword is a key feature of this release. It closes the gap between dynamic and statically-typed languages. Now you can create dynamic objects and let their types be determined at run time. With the addition of the System.Dynamic namespace, you can create expandable objects and advanced class wrappers, and you can provide interoperability...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • ANTLRWorks 2: Early Access Preview 10

    - by Geertjan
I took a quick look at how the ANTLRWorks 2 project is getting on... and discovered that today, March 23, the new early access preview 10 has been released: http://www.antlr.org/wiki/display/ANTLR4/1.+Overview Downloaded it immediately and was impressed when browsing through the Java.g file that I also found on the Antlr site: (Click to enlarge the image above.) On the page above, the following enhancements are listed: Add tooltips for rule references Finally fixed the navigator update bug Major improvements to code completion Fix legacy mode Many performance and stability updates I've blogged before about how the developers on the above project consider their code completion to be "scary fast". Some discussions have taken place about how code developed by the ANTLRWorks team could be contributed to the NetBeans project, since NetBeans IDE and ANTLRWorks 2 are both based on the NetBeans Platform.

  • HP ENVY 4-Sleekbook or Samsung Series 5 NP530U3B Ultrabook?

    - by Sam
I am a high school student and I need a laptop within the budget of 650$. I usually have a browser, microsoft office, music, and possibly a movie or something open at once. Will the HP ENVY 4's Intel Core i3 processor be enough to handle this or would I have to get the Samsung series 5 13 inch ultrabook to get this job done? I really like the look of the HP ENVY 4, but I also want a laptop that will be quick enough to handle my needs. PLEASE HELP!

  • Using Interlocked.Exchange(ref Enum, 1) to prevent re-entrancy [migrated]

    - by makerofthings7
What options do I have for pending work that can't acquire a lock via the following sample? System.Threading.Interlocked.CompareExchange<TrustPointStatusEnum> (ref tp.TrustPointStatus, TrustPointStatusEnum.NotInitalized,TrustPointStatusEnum.Loading); Based on my research think I have the following options: I can use Threading.SpinWait (for very quick IO tasks) at the cost of CPU I can use Sleep() which has an unreliable wake up time I'm not sure of any other option, but what I want to make sure of is that all these options work with the .NET 4 async and await keywords, especially if I use Task to run them on a background thread

  • Ubuntu and Surface Pro, wifi issues not fixed?

    - by Confused or too stupid
Just a quick question, from the numerous other threads I found, is the wifi still a no go straight out of installing Ubuntu? I tried this Dual boot Surface Pro with Ubuntu? with 13.04, the wifi is sporadic in working. From that and other threads I gathered that 13.10 would include the fix, so I tossed that onto the Surface as well, with the same results. Is there anything I am missing? Is there any other distro that has better luck with the Marvell chip?

  • Good ergonomic keyboards for ruby/rails programmer using vim (on Mac) [closed]

    - by Brand
I'm looking to buy an ergonomic keyboard but I'm unable to find answers for my specific needs. I'm a programmer so I need to be able to have quick/easy access to my curly brace and bracket keys. I use vim extensively so having the ctrl and esc keys in a easier to reach location would help. I'm also a mac user (doing ruby/rails dev). With all these things in mind, what are some good options for ergonomic keyboards? I'm afraid someone will see this as "off topic" but please realize I need to ask fellow programmers. For example, I was thinking of the Kinesis Keyboard but read some reviews saying it's not good for programming. That's when I realized other programmers would be the best at answering this question.

  • Do you have an address column somewhere in your database?

    - by shay.shmeltzer
Do you have an address column somewhere in your database? If the answer is yes - then the Web seminar I'm going to run together with the guys from Navteq on May 26th, might be of interest to you. You see, we all have geographical related information in our database, but many of us don't actually use this to do any geographical type of operations/representation with it. Well once you attend the "Add Maps to Your Java Applications - the Easy Way" seminar this might change. In the seminar we'll give you a quick overview of the Spatial related capabilities of the Oracle DB, Middleware and tools. And a demo showing you how easy it is to actually get data to show up on a map in your application and to interact with it. So register today, and mark your calendar.

  • Determining Whether a String Is Contained Within a String Array (Case Insensitive)

About once every couple of months I need to write a bit of code that does one thing if a particular string is found within an array of strings and something else if it is not ignoring differences in case. For whatever reason, I never seem to remember the code snippet to accomplish this, so after spending 10 minutes of research today I thought I'd write it down here in an effort to help commit it to memory or, at the very least, serve as a quick place to find the answer when the need arises again. So without further adieu, here it is:Visual Basic Version:If stringArrayName.Contains("valueToLookFor", StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase) Then ... Else ... End IfC# Version:if (stringArrayName.Contains("valueToLookFor", StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase)) ... else ...Without the StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase the search will be case-sensitive. For more information on comparing strings, see: New Recommendations for Using Strings in Microsoft .NET 2.0.Happy Programming!Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Are there existing FOSS component-based frameworks?

    - by Tesserex
The component based game programming paradigm is becoming much more popular. I was wondering, are there any projects out there that offer a reusable component framework? In any language, I guess I don't care about that. It's not for my own project, I'm just curious. Specifically I mean are there projects that include a base Entity class, a base Component class, and maybe some standard components? It would then be much easier starting a game if you didn't want to reinvent the wheel, or maybe you want a GraphicsComponent that does sprites with Direct3D, but you figure it's already been done a dozen times. A quick Googling turns up Rusher. Has anyone heard of this / does anyone use it? If there are no popular ones, then why not? Is it too difficult to make something like this reusable, and they need heavy customization? In my own implementation I found a lot of boilerplate that could be shoved into a framework.

  • 81% of European Shoppers Willing to Pay More for Better Customer Experience

    - by Richard Lefebvre
Customer Experience provides strategic driver for business growth Research released today from Oracle has revealed that customer experience is now a key driver for revenue growth in Europe, and an effective channel for brand differentiation in a globalized economy where products and services are increasingly commoditized. The research report, “Why Customer Satisfaction is No Longer Good Enough,” reveals that 81% of consumers surveyed are willing to pay more for superior customer experience. With nearly half (44%) willing to pay a premium of more than 5%. Improvement of the overall customer experience (40%), providing quick access to information and making it easier for customers to ask questions (35%) were cited as key drivers for spending more with a brand. The pan-European research, carried out in June 2012 by independent research company Loudhouse, surveyed 1400 online shoppers (50% female, 50% male) who had made a complaint or enquiry to a customer service department in the last 12 months. • How to Change the Window Border Size in Windows 8

    - by Chris Hoffman
The window borders on Windows 8’s desktop are fairly thick by default, but they don’t have to be – you can customize the side of the window borders with an easy-to-use application or a quick registry tweak. You can shrink the window borders and make them fairly thin, just as they were on previous versions of Windows. Or you can increase the window border size and make them extremely thick, if you prefer.. HTG Explains: Does Your Android Phone Need an Antivirus? • Ubuntu boot is slower than Windows 7

    - by Alex Bixel
One of the reasons I installed Ubuntu (Wubi installer) was for a supposedly quick boot time. My boot time with Windows 7 is about 20-25 seconds, while my boot with Ubuntu is 30-40. I judged the boot times from the time after I selected the operating system on the initial selection menu and the grub menu, respectively. This is even after following all sorts of online guides to improve it. I've done driver profiling (and yes, I remembered to remove the "profile" edit in the grub file afterwards), I've cut a fair few startup programs out, and I've installed the preload package. But I'm still getting startup rates phenomenally slower than Windows 7. Any help here?

  • Visual Studio 2010 Find and Replace With Regular Expressions

    - by Lance Robinson
Here is a quick notes about using regular expressions in the VS2010 Find Replace dialog.  1.  To create a backreference, use curly braces (“{“ and “}” ) instead of regular parentheses. 2.  To use the captured backreference, use \1\2 etc, where \1 is the first captured value, \2 is the second captured value, etc. Example: I want to find*: info.setFieldValue(param1, param2); and replace it with: SetFieldValue(info, param1, param2); To do this, I can use the following find/replace values: Find what: {[a-zA-Z0-9]+}.setFieldValue\({[a-zA-Z0-9., ]+}\); Replace with: SetFieldValue(\1, \2); Use Regular Expressions is checked, of course. *If you’re wondering why I’d want to do this – because I don’t have control over the setFieldValue function – its in a third party library that doesn’t behave in a very friendly manner. • Building a Roadmap for an IAM Platform

    - by B Shashikumar
Identity Management is no longer a departmental solution, it has become a strategic part of every organization's security posture. Enterprises require a forward thinking Identity Management strategy. In our previous blog post on "The Oracle Platform Approach", we discussed a recent study by Aberdeen which showed that organizations taking a platform approach can reduce cost by as much as 48% and have 35% fewer audit deficiencies. So how does an organization get started with an Identity Management (IAM) Platform? What are the components of such a platform and how can an organization continuously evolve it for better ROI and IT agility. What are some of the best practices to begin an IAM deployment? To find out the answers and to learn how ot build a comprehensive IAM roadmap, check out this presentation which discusses how Oracle can provide a quick start to your IAM program.  Platform approach-series-building a-roadmap-finalv1 View more presentations from OracleIDM

  • Programming Language vs. Game Engine [on hold]

    - by hunteroatway17
I understand that this question has been asked multiple times before. I am just asking this quick and simple question. I have been learning programming in C#, Java and C++ for the past 6 months; Just experimenting with each. I think that C++ is the one that I like most. What I would like to know and am wondering about is should I learn a programming language and use a 2D framework like Allegro; Or should I learn Unity and make 2D games in that because it is probably faster and easier. I want to learn something that I can get pretty good at, seeing as I am pursuing a career in indie game development. I also have a programmer's mind set and I am a left brain thinker so learning a language is not a issue. I just want to best and most future proof choice. Thanks.

  • Do PHP-FPM (and other PHP handlers) need execute permissions on the PHP files they're serving?

    - by Andrew Cheong
I read in a post at Server Fault that PHP-FPM needs execute permissions. However, the answer in When creating a website, what permissions and directory structure? only grants read and write permissions to PHP-FPM. Maybe I don't quite understand how PHP handlers (or CGI in general) work, but the two claims seem contradictory to me. As I understand, when Apache / Nginx gets a request for foobar.php, it "passes" the file to an appropriate handler. That is, I imagine it's as if www-root (or apache or whomever the webserver's running as) were to run some command, /usr/sbin/php-fpm foobar.php Actually, no, that's naive, I just realized. PHP-FPM must be a running instance (if it's to be performant, and cache, etc.), so probably PHP-FPM is just being told, "Hey, quick, process this file for me!" In either case, I don't see why execute permissions are necessary. It's not like the webserver needs to literally execute the file, i.e. ./foobar.php Is the Server Fault answer simply mistaken?

  • YouTube: CoffeeScript Rocks (in NetBeans IDE)

    - by Geertjan
CoffeeScript is a handy preprocessor for JavaScript, as shown in a quick demo below on YouTube, using the CoffeeScript plugin for NetBeans IDE. Right now, the NetBeans Plugin Portal doesn't have a CoffeeScript plugin for NetBeans IDE 7.4, but not to worry, the NetBeans IDE 7.3 plugin works just fine. http://plugins.netbeans.org/plugin/39007/coffeescript-netbeans Here's a small YouTube clip I made today showing how it all works: Also read this very handy and detailed NetBeans tutorial, on which I based the demo above: https://netbeans.org/kb/docs/web/js-toolkits-jquery.html Related info: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgqVh_KpVKY http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/wa-coffee1/ http://blog.sethladd.com/2012/01/vanilla-dart-ftw.html http://api.jquery.com/fadeOut/

  • is a merchant account a requirment for a website to take payments

    - by calum
I have had a quick look but couldn't see anything related. Basically, if we were to accept payments for events on our website, via paypal (essentially a Buy it now! button), as a business, do we need a merchant's account, or will a regular bank account be acceptable? I may have some confusion in terms. My understanding is you need a merchant's account to accept credit card payments, but as we are using PayPal, is this necessary? Thank you for any clarification. disclaimer - I've read What are some options for taking payments on my website? but it doesn't explicitly say if we require a merchant account or not. Thank you.

  • Looking for a customizable "Did you know..." dialog application

    - by Jorge Suárez de Lis
I want to deploy a "Did you know..." or "Tip of the day" application at the office. It should: Show a dialog at login time with a random tip. Obviously, provide some way to store my own tips. Be easy to disable and reenable by the user itself. I'm using puppet, so I'm covered with the deployment. The tips don't even need to be gathered from a server, since I can deploy the newest tips file/database with no costs. Sure, I could hack a quick solution by using zenity and bash, but I'd like to know if there's any application out there specifically targeted at this. I don't like the zenity approach very much because it's very limited on the contents that can be displayed. No text alongside screenshots, for example. Zenity is aimed towards displaying simple dialogs.

  • Are "Compile to JavaScript" Frameworks Hostile to Continuous Integration?

    - by joshin4colours
Lately we've been looking at ways to improve automated testing and related tooling of our enterprise-level GWT web app. I've realized that in some ways, GWT is a bit hostile to automated testing, mainly because of the nature of the long GWT compile times from Java to JS. This makes unit testing somewhat challenging, but it also puts some roadblocks up for testing in a CI environment. I've also found out that some of our build and deployment processes are somewhat complicated due to the nature of GWT's compile process. Is this a general problem for "compile to JS" frameworks for webapps? I don't have much experience with them, but I can see some potential problems for automated testing and continuous integration and deployment. Some issues I see: Long build and compile times preventing quick deployments Language the app is developed in != JS, preventing good unit testing Obfuscated JS in the actual app makes it more like a executable than a web app Are these issues present in other similar frameworks, or is this more a GWT issue?
