  • SQL University: What and why of database testing

    - by Mladen Prajdic
    This is a post for a great idea called SQL University started by Jorge Segarra also famously known as SqlChicken on Twitter. It’s a collection of blog posts on different database related topics contributed by several smart people all over the world. So this week is mine and we’ll be talking about database testing and refactoring. In 3 posts we’ll cover: SQLU part 1 - What and why of database testing SQLU part 2 - What and why of database refactoring SQLU part 2 – Tools of the trade With that out of the way let us sharpen our pencils and get going. Why test a database The sad state of the industry today is that there is very little emphasis on testing in general. Test driven development is still a small niche of the programming world while refactoring is even smaller. The cause of this is the inability of developers to convince themselves and their managers that writing tests is beneficial. At the moment they are mostly viewed as waste of time. This is because the average person (let’s not fool ourselves, we’re all average) is unable to think about lower future costs in relation to little more current work. It’s orders of magnitude easier to know about the current costs in relation to current amount of work. That’s why programmers convince themselves testing is a waste of time. However we have to ask ourselves what tests are really about? Maybe finding bugs? No, not really. If we introduce bugs, we’re likely to write test around those bugs too. But yes we can find some bugs with tests. The main point of tests is to have reproducible repeatability in our systems. By having a code base largely covered by tests we can know with better certainty what a small code change can break in other parts of the system. By having repeatability we can make code changes with confidence, since we know we’ll see what breaks in other tests. And here comes the inability to estimate future costs. By spending just a few more hours writing those tests we’d know instantly what broke where. Imagine we fix a reported bug. We check-in the code, deploy it and the users are happy. Until we get a call 2 weeks later about a certain monthly process has stopped working. What we don’t know is that this process was developed by a long gone coworker and for some reason it relied on that same bug we’ve happily fixed. There’s no way we could’ve known that. We say OK and go in and fix the monthly process. But what we have no clue about is that there’s this ETL job that relied on data from that monthly process. Now that we’ve fixed the process it’s giving unexpected (yet correct since we fixed it) data to the ETL job. So we have to fix that too. But there’s this part of the app we coded that relies on data from that exact ETL job. And just like that we enter the “Loop of maintenance horror”. With the loop eventually comes blame. Here’s a nice tip for all developers and DBAs out there: If you make a mistake man up and admit to it. All of the above is valid for any kind of software development. Keeping this in mind the database is nothing other than just a part of the application. But a big part! One reason why testing a database is even more important than testing an application is that one database is usually accessed from multiple applications and processes. This makes it the central and vital part of the enterprise software infrastructure. Knowing all this can we really afford not to have tests? What to test in a database Now that we’ve decided we’ll dive into this testing thing we have to ask ourselves what needs to be tested? The short answer is: everything. The long answer is: read on! There are 2 main ways of doing tests: Black box and White box testing. Black box testing means we have no idea how the system internals are built and we only have access to it’s inputs and outputs. With it we test that the internal changes to the system haven’t caused the input/output behavior of the system to change. The most important thing to test here are the edge conditions. It’s where most programs break. Having good edge condition tests we can be more confident that the systems changes won’t break. White box testing has the full knowledge of the system internals. With it we test the internal system changes, different states of the application, etc… White and Black box tests should be complementary to each other as they are very much interconnected. Testing database routines includes testing stored procedures, views, user defined functions and anything you use to access the data with. Database routines are your input/output interface to the database system. They count as black box testing. We test then for 2 things: Data and schema. When testing schema we only care about the columns and the data types they’re returning. After all the schema is the contract to the out side systems. If it changes we usually have to change the applications accessing it. One helpful T-SQL command when doing schema tests is SET FMTONLY ON. It tells the SQL Server to return only empty results sets. This speeds up tests because it doesn’t return any data to the client. After we’ve validated the schema we have to test the returned data. There no other way to do this but to have expected data known before the tests executes and comparing that data to the database routine output. Testing Authentication and Authorization helps us validate who has access to the SQL Server box (Authentication) and who has access to certain database objects (Authorization). For desktop applications and windows authentication this works well. But the biggest problem here are web apps. They usually connect to the database as a single user. Please ensure that that user is not SA or an account with admin privileges. That is just bad. Load testing ensures us that our database can handle peak loads. One often overlooked tool for load testing is Microsoft’s OSTRESS tool. It’s part of RML utilities (x86, x64) for SQL Server and can help determine if our database server can handle loads like 100 simultaneous users each doing 10 requests per second. SQL Profiler can also help us here by looking at why certain queries are slow and what to do to fix them.   One particular problem to think about is how to begin testing existing databases. First thing we have to do is to get to know those databases. We can’t test something when we don’t know how it works. To do this we have to talk to the users of the applications accessing the database, run SQL Profiler to see what queries are being run, use existing documentation to decipher all the object relationships, etc… The way to approach this is to choose one part of the database (say a logical grouping of tables that go together) and filter our traces accordingly. Once we’ve done that we move on to the next grouping and so on until we’ve covered the whole database. Then we move on to the next one. Database Testing is a topic that we can spent many hours discussing but let this be a nice intro to the world of database testing. See you in the next post.

  • Mscorlib mocking minus the attribute

    - by mehfuzh
    Mocking .net framework members (a.k.a. mscorlib) is always a daunting task. It’s the breed of static and final methods and full of surprises. Technically intercepting mscorlib members is completely different from other class libraries. This is the reason it is dealt differently. Generally, I prefer writing a wrapper around an mscorlib member (Ex. File.Delete(“abc.txt”)) and expose it via interface but that is not always an easy task if you already have years old codebase. While mocking mscorlib members first thing that comes to people’s mind is DateTime.Now. If you Google through, you will find tons of example dealing with just that. May be it’s the most important class that we can’t ignore and I will create an example using JustMock Q2 with the same. In Q2 2012, we just get rid of the MockClassAtrribute for mocking mscorlib members. JustMock is already attribute free for mocking class libraries. We radically think that vendor specific attributes only makes your code smelly and therefore decided the same for mscorlib. Now, I want to fake DateTime.Now for the following class: public class NestedDateTime { public DateTime GetDateTime() { return DateTime.Now; } } It is the simplest one that can be. The first thing here is that I tell JustMock “hey we have a DateTime.Now in NestedDateTime class that we want to mock”. To do so, during the test initialization I write this: .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } Mock.Replace(() => DateTime.Now).In<NestedDateTime>(x => x.GetDateTime());.csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } I can also define it for all the members in the class, but that’s just a waste of extra watts. Mock.Replace(() => DateTime.Now).In<NestedDateTime>(); Now question, why should I bother doing it? The answer is that I am not using attribute and with this approach, I can mock any framework members not just File, FileInfo or DateTime. Here to note that we already mock beyond the three but when nested around a complex class, JustMock was not intercepting it correctly. Therefore, we decided to get rid of the attribute altogether fixing the issue. Finally, I write my test as usual. [TestMethod] public void ShouldAssertMockingDateTimeFromNestedClass() { var expected = new DateTime(2000, 1, 1); Mock.Arrange(() => DateTime.Now).Returns(expected); Assert.Equal(new NestedDateTime().GetDateTime(), expected); } .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } That’s it, we are good. Now let me do the same for a random one, let’s say I want mock a member from DriveInfo: Mock.Replace<DriveInfo[]>(() => DriveInfo.GetDrives()).In<MsCorlibFixture>(x => x.ShouldReturnExpectedDriveWhenMocked()); Moving forward, I write my test: [TestMethod] public void ShouldReturnExpectedDriveWhenMocked() { Mock.Arrange(() => DriveInfo.GetDrives()).MustBeCalled(); DriveInfo.GetDrives(); Mock.Assert(()=> DriveInfo.GetDrives()); } .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } Here is one convention; you have to replace the mscorlib member before executing the target method that contains it. Here the call to DriveInfo is within the MsCorlibFixture therefore it should be defined during test initialization or before executing the test method. Hope this gives you the idea.

  • How to compare a memory bits in C++?

    - by Trunet
    Hi, I need help with a memory bit comparison function. I bought a LED Matrix here with 4 x HT1632C chips and I'm using it on my arduino mega2560. There're no code available for this chipset(it's not the same as HT1632) and I'm writing on my own. I have a plot function that get x,y coordinates and a color and that pixel turn on. Only this is working perfectly. But I need more performance on my display so I tried to make a shadowRam variable that is a "copy" of my device memory. Before I plot anything on display it checks on shadowRam to see if it's really necessary to change that pixel. When I enabled this(getShadowRam) on plot function my display has some, just SOME(like 3 or 4 on entire display) ghost pixels(pixels that is not supposed to be turned on). If I just comment the prev_color if's on my plot function it works perfectly. Also, I'm cleaning my shadowRam array setting all matrix to zero. variables: #define BLACK 0 #define GREEN 1 #define RED 2 #define ORANGE 3 #define CHIP_MAX 8 byte shadowRam[63][CHIP_MAX-1] = {0}; getShadowRam function: byte HT1632C::getShadowRam(byte x, byte y) { byte addr, bitval, nChip; if (x>=32) { nChip = 3 + x/16 + (y>7?2:0); } else { nChip = 1 + x/16 + (y>7?2:0); } bitval = 8>>(y&3); x = x % 16; y = y % 8; addr = (x<<1) + (y>>2); if ((shadowRam[addr][nChip-1] & bitval) && (shadowRam[addr+32][nChip-1] & bitval)) { return ORANGE; } else if (shadowRam[addr][nChip-1] & bitval) { return GREEN; } else if (shadowRam[addr+32][nChip-1] & bitval) { return RED; } else { return BLACK; } } plot function: void HT1632C::plot (int x, int y, int color) { if (x<0 || x>X_MAX || y<0 || y>Y_MAX) return; if (color != BLACK && color != GREEN && color != RED && color != ORANGE) return; char addr, bitval; byte nChip; byte prev_color = HT1632C::getShadowRam(x,y); bitval = 8>>(y&3); if (x>=32) { nChip = 3 + x/16 + (y>7?2:0); } else { nChip = 1 + x/16 + (y>7?2:0); } x = x % 16; y = y % 8; addr = (x<<1) + (y>>2); switch(color) { case BLACK: if (prev_color != BLACK) { // compare with memory to only set if pixel is other color // clear the bit in both planes; shadowRam[addr][nChip-1] &= ~bitval; HT1632C::sendData(nChip, addr, shadowRam[addr][nChip-1]); shadowRam[addr+32][nChip-1] &= ~bitval; HT1632C::sendData(nChip, addr+32, shadowRam[addr+32][nChip-1]); } break; case GREEN: if (prev_color != GREEN) { // compare with memory to only set if pixel is other color // set the bit in the green plane and clear the bit in the red plane; shadowRam[addr][nChip-1] |= bitval; HT1632C::sendData(nChip, addr, shadowRam[addr][nChip-1]); shadowRam[addr+32][nChip-1] &= ~bitval; HT1632C::sendData(nChip, addr+32, shadowRam[addr+32][nChip-1]); } break; case RED: if (prev_color != RED) { // compare with memory to only set if pixel is other color // clear the bit in green plane and set the bit in the red plane; shadowRam[addr][nChip-1] &= ~bitval; HT1632C::sendData(nChip, addr, shadowRam[addr][nChip-1]); shadowRam[addr+32][nChip-1] |= bitval; HT1632C::sendData(nChip, addr+32, shadowRam[addr+32][nChip-1]); } break; case ORANGE: if (prev_color != ORANGE) { // compare with memory to only set if pixel is other color // set the bit in both the green and red planes; shadowRam[addr][nChip-1] |= bitval; HT1632C::sendData(nChip, addr, shadowRam[addr][nChip-1]); shadowRam[addr+32][nChip-1] |= bitval; HT1632C::sendData(nChip, addr+32, shadowRam[addr+32][nChip-1]); } break; } } If helps: The datasheet of board I'm using. On page 7 has the memory mapping I'm using. Also, I have a video of display working.

How to Make Custom Valentines A size we’ve used for all of our Valentines is a 3” x 4” at 150 dpi. This is fairly low resolution for print, but makes a great graphic to email. With your new image open, Navigate to Edit > Fill and fill your background layer with a rich, red color (or whatever appeals to you.) By setting “Use” to “Foreground color as shown above, you’ll paint whatever foreground color you have in your color picker. Press to select the text tool. Set a few text objects, using whatever fonts appeal to you. Pixel fonts, like this one, are freely downloadable, and we’ve already shared a great list of Valentines fonts. Copy an image from the internet if you’re confident your sweetie won’t mind a bit of fair use of copyrighted imagery. If they do mind, find yourself some great Creative Commons images. to do a free transform on your image, sizing it to whatever dimensions work best for your design. Right click your newly added image layer in your panel and Choose “Blending Effects” to pick a Layer Style. “Stroke” with this setting adds a black line around your image. Also turning on “Outer Glow” with this setting puts a dark black shadow around the top and bottom (and sides, although they are hidden). Add some more text. Double entendre is recommended. Click and hold down on the “Rectangle Tool” to get the “Custom Shape Tool.” The custom shape tool has useful vector shapes built into it. Find the “Shape” dropdown in the menu to find the heart image. Click and drag to create a vector heart shape in your image. Your layers panel is where you can change the color, if it happens to use the wrong one at first. Click the color swatch in your panel, highlighted in blue above. will transform your vector heart. You can also use it to rotate, if you like. Add some details, like this Power or Standby symbol, which can be found in symbol fonts, taken from images online, or drawn by hand. • T-SQL Tuesday #33: Trick Shots: Undocumented, Underdocumented, and Unknown Conspiracies!

    - by Most Valuable Yak (Rob Volk)
    Mike Fal (b | t) is hosting this month's T-SQL Tuesday on Trick Shots.  I love this choice because I've been preoccupied with sneaky/tricky/evil SQL Server stuff for a long time and have been presenting on it for the past year.  Mike's directives were "Show us a cool trick or process you developed…It doesn’t have to be useful", which most of my blogging definitely fits, and "Tell us what you learned from this trick…tell us how it gave you insight in to how SQL Server works", which is definitely a new concept.  I've done a lot of reading and watching on SQL Server Internals and even attended training, but sometimes I need to go explore on my own, using my own tools and techniques.  It's an itch I get every few months, and, well, it sure beats workin'. I've found some people to be intimidated by SQL Server's internals, and I'll admit there are A LOT of internals to keep track of, but there are tons of excellent resources that clearly document most of them, and show how knowing even the basics of internals can dramatically improve your database's performance.  It may seem like rocket science, or even brain surgery, but you don't have to be a genius to understand it. Although being an "evil genius" can help you learn some things they haven't told you about. ;) This blog post isn't a traditional "deep dive" into internals, it's more of an approach to find out how a program works.  It utilizes an extremely handy tool from an even more extremely handy suite of tools, Sysinternals.  I'm not the only one who finds Sysinternals useful for SQL Server: Argenis Fernandez (b | t), Microsoft employee and former T-SQL Tuesday host, has an excellent presentation on how to troubleshoot SQL Server using Sysinternals, and I highly recommend it.  Argenis didn't cover the Strings.exe utility, but I'll be using it to "hack" the SQL Server executable (DLL and EXE) files. Please note that I'm not promoting software piracy or applying these techniques to attack SQL Server via internal knowledge. This is strictly educational and doesn't reveal any proprietary Microsoft information.  And since Argenis works for Microsoft and demonstrated Sysinternals with SQL Server, I'll just let him take the blame for it. :P (The truth is I've used Strings.exe on SQL Server before I ever met Argenis.) Once you download and install Strings.exe you can run it from the command line.  For our purposes we'll want to run this in the Binn folder of your SQL Server instance (I'm referencing SQL Server 2012 RTM): cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11\MSSQL\Binn" C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11\MSSQL\Binn> strings *sql*.dll > sqldll.txt C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11\MSSQL\Binn> strings *sql*.exe > sqlexe.txt   I've limited myself to DLLs and EXEs that have "sql" in their names.  There are quite a few more but I haven't examined them in any detail. (Homework assignment for you!) If you run this yourself you'll get 2 text files, one with all the extracted strings from every SQL DLL file, and the other with the SQL EXE strings.  You can open these in Notepad, but you're better off using Notepad++, EditPad, Emacs, Vim or another more powerful text editor, as these will be several megabytes in size. And when you do open it…you'll find…a TON of gibberish.  (If you think that's bad, just try opening the raw DLL or EXE file in Notepad.  And by the way, don't do this in production, or even on a running instance of SQL Server.)  Even if you don't clean up the file, you can still use your editor's search function to find a keyword like "SELECT" or some other item you expect to be there.  As dumb as this sounds, I sometimes spend my lunch break just scanning the raw text for anything interesting.  I'm boring like that. Sometimes though, having these files available can lead to some incredible learning experiences.  For me the most recent time was after reading Joe Sack's post on non-parallel plan reasons.  He mentions a new SQL Server 2012 execution plan element called NonParallelPlanReason, and demonstrates a query that generates "MaxDOPSetToOne".  Joe (formerly on the Microsoft SQL Server product team, so he knows this stuff) mentioned that this new element was not currently documented and tried a few more examples to see what other reasons could be generated. Since I'd already run Strings.exe on the SQL Server DLLs and EXE files, it was easy to run grep/find/findstr for MaxDOPSetToOne on those extracts.  Once I found which files it belonged to (sqlmin.dll) I opened the text to see if the other reasons were listed.  As you can see in my comment on Joe's blog, there were about 20 additional non-parallel reasons.  And while it's not "documentation" of this underdocumented feature, the names are pretty self-explanatory about what can prevent parallel processing. I especially like the ones about cursors – more ammo! - and am curious about the PDW compilation and Cloud DB replication reasons. One reason completely stumped me: NoParallelHekatonPlan.  What the heck is a hekaton?  Google and Wikipedia were vague, and the top results were not in English.  I found one reference to Greek, stating "hekaton" can be translated as "hundredfold"; with a little more Wikipedia-ing this leads to hecto, the prefix for "one hundred" as a unit of measure.  I'm not sure why Microsoft chose hekaton for such a plan name, but having already learned some Greek I figured I might as well dig some more in the DLL text for hekaton.  Here's what I found: hekaton_slow_param_passing Occurs when a Hekaton procedure call dispatch goes to slow parameter passing code path The reason why Hekaton parameter passing code took the slow code path hekaton_slow_param_pass_reason sp_deploy_hekaton_database sp_undeploy_hekaton_database sp_drop_hekaton_database sp_checkpoint_hekaton_database sp_restore_hekaton_database e:\sql11_main_t\sql\ntdbms\hekaton\sqlhost\sqllang\hkproc.cpp e:\sql11_main_t\sql\ntdbms\hekaton\sqlhost\sqllang\matgen.cpp e:\sql11_main_t\sql\ntdbms\hekaton\sqlhost\sqllang\matquery.cpp e:\sql11_main_t\sql\ntdbms\hekaton\sqlhost\sqllang\sqlmeta.cpp e:\sql11_main_t\sql\ntdbms\hekaton\sqlhost\sqllang\resultset.cpp Interesting!  The first 4 entries (in red) mention parameters and "slow code".  Could this be the foundation of the mythical DBCC RUNFASTER command?  Have I been passing my parameters the slow way all this time? And what about those sp_xxxx_hekaton_database procedures (in blue)? Could THEY be the secret to a faster SQL Server? Could they promise a "hundredfold" improvement in performance?  Are these special, super-undocumented DIB (databases in black)? I decided to look in the SQL Server system views for any objects with hekaton in the name, or references to them, in hopes of discovering some new code that would answer all my questions: SELECT name FROM sys.all_objects WHERE name LIKE '%hekaton%' SELECT name FROM sys.all_objects WHERE object_definition(OBJECT_ID) LIKE '%hekaton%' Which revealed: name ------------------------ (0 row(s) affected) name ------------------------ sp_createstats sp_recompile sp_updatestats (3 row(s) affected)   Hmm.  Well that didn't find much.  Looks like these procedures are seriously undocumented, unknown, perhaps forbidden knowledge. Maybe a part of some unspeakable evil? (No, I'm not paranoid, I just like mysteries and thought that punching this up with that kind of thing might keep you reading.  I know I'd fall asleep without it.) OK, so let's check out those 3 procedures and see what they reveal when I search for "Hekaton": sp_createstats: -- filter out local temp tables, Hekaton tables, and tables for which current user has no permissions -- Note that OBJECTPROPERTY returns NULL on type="IT" tables, thus we only call it on type='U' tables   OK, that's interesting, let's go looking down a little further: ((@table_type<>'U') or (0 = OBJECTPROPERTY(@table_id, 'TableIsInMemory'))) and -- Hekaton table   Wellllll, that tells us a few new things: There's such a thing as Hekaton tables (UPDATE: I'm not the only one to have found them!) They are not standard user tables and probably not in memory UPDATE: I misinterpreted this because I didn't read all the code when I wrote this blog post. The OBJECTPROPERTY function has an undocumented TableIsInMemory option Let's check out sp_recompile: -- (3) Must not be a Hekaton procedure.   And once again go a little further: if (ObjectProperty(@objid, 'IsExecuted') <> 0 AND ObjectProperty(@objid, 'IsInlineFunction') = 0 AND ObjectProperty(@objid, 'IsView') = 0 AND -- Hekaton procedure cannot be recompiled -- Make them go through schema version bumping branch, which will fail ObjectProperty(@objid, 'ExecIsCompiledProc') = 0)   And now we learn that hekaton procedures also exist, they can't be recompiled, there's a "schema version bumping branch" somewhere, and OBJECTPROPERTY has another undocumented option, ExecIsCompiledProc.  (If you experiment with this you'll find this option returns null, I think it only works when called from a system object.) This is neat! Sadly sp_updatestats doesn't reveal anything new, the comments about hekaton are the same as sp_createstats.  But we've ALSO discovered undocumented features for the OBJECTPROPERTY function, which we can now search for: SELECT name, object_definition(OBJECT_ID) FROM sys.all_objects WHERE object_definition(OBJECT_ID) LIKE '%OBJECTPROPERTY(%'   I'll leave that to you as more homework.  I should add that searching the system procedures was recommended long ago by the late, great Ken Henderson, in his Guru's Guide books, as a great way to find undocumented features.  That seems to be really good advice! Now if you're a programmer/hacker, you've probably been drooling over the last 5 entries for hekaton (in green), because these are the names of source code files for SQL Server!  Does this mean we can access the source code for SQL Server?  As The Oracle suggested to Neo, can we return to The Source??? Actually, no. Well, maybe a little bit.  While you won't get the actual source code from the compiled DLL and EXE files, you'll get references to source files, debugging symbols, variables and module names, error messages, and even the startup flags for SQL Server.  And if you search for "DBCC" or "CHECKDB" you'll find a really nice section listing all the DBCC commands, including the undocumented ones.  Granted those are pretty easy to find online, but you may be surprised what those web sites DIDN'T tell you! (And neither will I, go look for yourself!)  And as we saw earlier, you'll also find execution plan elements, query processing rules, and who knows what else.  It's also instructive to see how Microsoft organizes their source directories, how various components (storage engine, query processor, Full Text, AlwaysOn/HADR) are split into smaller modules. There are over 2000 source file references, go do some exploring! So what did we learn?  We can pull strings out of executable files, search them for known items, browse them for unknown items, and use the results to examine internal code to learn even more things about SQL Server.  We've even learned how to use command-line utilities!  We are now 1337 h4X0rz!  (Not really.  I hate that leetspeak crap.) Although, I must confess I might've gone too far with the "conspiracy" part of this post.  I apologize for that, it's just my overactive imagination.  There's really no hidden agenda or conspiracy regarding SQL Server internals.  It's not The Matrix.  It's not like you'd find anything like that in there: Attach Matrix Database DM_MATRIX_COMM_PIPELINES MATRIXXACTPARTICIPANTS dm_matrix_agents   Alright, enough of this paranoid ranting!  Microsoft are not really evil!  It's not like they're The Borg from Star Trek: ALTER FEDERATION DROP ALTER FEDERATION SPLIT DROP FEDERATION   #tsql2sday

  • OpenGL/GLSL: Render to cube map?

    - by BobDole
    I'm trying to figure out how to render my scene to a cube map. I've been stuck on this for a bit and figured I would ask you guys for some help. I'm new to OpenGL and this is the first time I'm using a FBO. I currently have a working example of using a cubemap bmp file, and the samplerCube sample type in the fragment shader is attached to GL_TEXTURE1. I'm not changing the shader code at all. I'm just changing the fact that I wont be calling the function that was loading the cubemap bmp file and trying to use the below code to render to a cubemap. You can see below that I'm also attaching the texture again to GL_TEXTURE1. This is so when I set the uniform: glUniform1i(getUniLoc(myProg, "Cubemap"), 1); it can access it in my fragment shader via uniform samplerCube Cubemap. I'm calling the below function like so: cubeMapTexture = renderToCubeMap(150, GL_RGBA8, GL_RGBA, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE); Now, I realize in the draw loop below that I'm not changing the view direction to look down the +x, -x, +y, -y, +z, -z axis. I really was just wanting to see something working first before implemented that. I figured I should at least see something on my object the way the code is now. I'm not seeing anything, just straight black. I've made my background white still the object is black. I've removed lighting, and coloring to just sample the cubemap texture and still black. I'm thinking the problem might be the format types when setting my texture which is GL_RGB8, GL_RGBA but I've also tried: GL_RGBA, GL_RGBA GL_RGB, GL_RGB I thought this would be standard since we are rendering to a texture attached to a framebuffer, but I've seen different examples that use different enum values. I've also tried binding the cube map texture in every draw call that I'm wanting to use the cube map: glBindTexture(GL_TEXTURE_CUBE_MAP, cubeMapTexture); Also, I'm not creating a depth buffer for the FBO which I saw in most examples, because I'm only wanting the color buffer for my cube map. I actually added one to see if that was the problem and still got the same results. I could of fudged that up when I tried. Any help that can point me in the right direction would be appreciated. GLuint renderToCubeMap(int size, GLenum InternalFormat, GLenum Format, GLenum Type) { // color cube map GLuint textureObject; int face; GLenum status; //glEnable(GL_TEXTURE_2D); glActiveTexture(GL_TEXTURE1); glGenTextures(1, &textureObject); glBindTexture(GL_TEXTURE_CUBE_MAP, textureObject); glTexParameterf(GL_TEXTURE_CUBE_MAP, GL_TEXTURE_MIN_FILTER, GL_LINEAR); glTexParameterf(GL_TEXTURE_CUBE_MAP, GL_TEXTURE_MAG_FILTER, GL_LINEAR); glTexParameterf(GL_TEXTURE_CUBE_MAP, GL_TEXTURE_WRAP_S, GL_CLAMP_TO_EDGE); glTexParameterf(GL_TEXTURE_CUBE_MAP, GL_TEXTURE_WRAP_T, GL_CLAMP_TO_EDGE); glTexParameterf(GL_TEXTURE_CUBE_MAP, GL_TEXTURE_WRAP_R, GL_CLAMP_TO_EDGE); for (face = 0; face < 6; face++) { glTexImage2D(GL_TEXTURE_CUBE_MAP_POSITIVE_X + face, 0, InternalFormat, size, size, 0, Format, Type, NULL); } // framebuffer object glGenFramebuffers(1, &fbo); glBindFramebuffer(GL_FRAMEBUFFER, fbo); glFramebufferTexture2D(GL_FRAMEBUFFER, GL_COLOR_ATTACHMENT0, GL_TEXTURE_CUBE_MAP_POSITIVE_X, textureObject, 0); status = glCheckFramebufferStatus(GL_FRAMEBUFFER); printf("%d\"\n", status); printf("%d\n", GL_FRAMEBUFFER_COMPLETE); glViewport(0,0,size, size); for (face = 1; face < 6; face++) { drawSpheres(); glFramebufferTexture2D(GL_FRAMEBUFFER, GL_COLOR_ATTACHMENT0,GL_TEXTURE_CUBE_MAP_POSITIVE_X + face, textureObject, 0); } //Bind 0, which means render to back buffer, as a result, fb is unbound glBindFramebuffer(GL_FRAMEBUFFER, 0); return textureObject; }

  • Getting HAPROXY to redirect http to https in users browser session

    - by Jon
    We are currently using a Internet cloud provider to host our SaaS platform. The platform consists of a Firewall - Cloud Provider SLB - - Apache Web Server - HAPROXY SLB - Liferay Platform We have had to use HAPROXY because of an issue with the cloud providers SLB that meant we were unable to use it for load balancing the Liferay platform applications. I have implemented HAPROXY in our secure tier and that seems to do the trick of load balancing the requests quite adequately. However during testing we encountered a functional issue whereby selecting a sub-menu from the web portal resulted in the application hanging, using an http analyser we saw that the request being passed back to the users browser was in http, from discussing this with the software vendor it transpires that the Liferay application has some hard-coded http links, and that other customers have worked around this by using physical NLB's such as F5 and redirecting the http traffic to https. The entry in the HAPROXY logs reads: haproxy[2717]: haproxy[2717]: <Apache Web Agent>:37957 [11/Apr/2013:08:07:00.128] http-uapi uapi/<ServerName> 0/0/0/9/10 200 4912 - - ---- 4/2/1/2/0 0/0 "GET /servicedesk/controller?docommand=renderradform&!key=esd_sfb001_frm_feedback_forms_list&isportalintegratedmode=true&USR=joe.bloggs%40gmail.com&_dc=1365667773097&redirecturl=controller%3Fdocommand%3Drenderbody%26%21key%3DESD_SFB001_FRM_FEEDBACK_FORMS_LIST%26isportalintegratedmode%3Dtrue&sso_token=ALiYv2UqzLsAhSw1ZchRDlCHlq44Bhj9&ONERROR=%2Fweb%2Fjsp%2Fapps%2Fportal-integration-error.jsp&itype=login&slicetoken=NW51O%242aRo%2C_Zz%2476P_9DTtnFmz6%28bhk&AUTOFORWARDURL=controller%3Fdocommand%3Drenderbody%26%21key%3DESD_SFB001_FRM_FEEDBACK_FORMS_LIST%26isportalintegratedmode%3Dtrue&LOGINPAGE=https%3A%2F%2F<FQDN of Web Portal>%2Fweb%2F4732cf01-82c3-4bc5-b6c9-552253e672cf%2Fworkflow-tools&appid=1&!uid=1&!redownloadToken=7.0.3.1.1363611301.0&userlocale=en_US&!datechanged=2012-05-18%2015:05:31.38 HTTP/1.1" :37957 [11/Apr/2013:08:07:00.128] http-uapi uapi/<ServerName> 0/0/0/9/10 200 4912 - - ---- 4/2/1/2/0 0/0 "GET /servicedesk/controller?docommand=renderradform&!key=esd_sfb001_frm_feedback_forms_list&isportalintegratedmode=true&USR=joe.bloggs%40gmail.com&_dc=1365667773097&redirecturl=controller%3Fdocommand%3Drenderbody%26%21key%3DESD_SFB001_FRM_FEEDBACK_FORMS_LIST%26isportalintegratedmode%3Dtrue&sso_token=ALiYv2UqzLsAhSw1ZchRDlCHlq44Bhj9&ONERROR=%2Fweb%2Fjsp%2Fapps%2Fportal-integration-error.jsp&itype=login&slicetoken=NW51O%242aRo%2C_Zz%2476P_9DTtnFmz6%28bhk&AUTOFORWARDURL=controller%3Fdocommand%3Drenderbody%26%21key%3DESD_SFB001_FRM_FEEDBACK_FORMS_LIST%26isportalintegratedmode%3Dtrue&LOGINPAGE=https%3A%2F%2F<FQDN of Web Portal>%2Fweb%2F4732cf01-82c3-4bc5-b6c9-552253e672cf%2Fworkflow-tools&appid=1&!uid=1&!redownloadToken=7.0.3.1.1363611301.0&userlocale=en_US&!datechanged=2012-05-18%2015:05:31.38 HTTP/1.1" The corresponding HTTP browser entry shows: http://<FQDN of ServiceDesk>/servicedesk/controller?docommand=renderradform&!key=esd_org019_frm_contact_list&isportalintegratedmode=true&USR=joe.bloggs%40gmail.com&_dc=1365665987887&redirecturl=controller%3Fdocommand%3Drenderbody%26%21key%3DESD_ORG019_FRM_CONTACT_LIST%26isportalintegratedmode%3Dtrue&sso_token=3NxsXYORMPp32SwL8ftVUCMH2QdWLH82&ONERROR=%2Fweb%2Fjsp%2Fapps%2Fportal-integration-error.jsp&itype=login&slicetoken=NW51O%242aRo%2C_Zz%2476P_9DTtnFmz6%28bhk&AUTOFORWARDURL=controller%3Fdocommand%3Drenderbody%26%21key%3DESD_ORG019_FRM_CONTACT_LIST%26isportalintegratedmode%3Dtrue&LOGINPAGE=https%3A%2F%2F<FQDN of Web Portal>>%2Fweb%2F4732cf01-82c3-4bc5-b6c9-552253e672cf%2Fapplication-setup&appid=1&!uid=1&!redownloadToken=7.0.3.1.1363611301.0&userlocale=en_US&!datechanged=2012-10-26%2019:00:25.08 From reading through the forums and other sites it looks like we should be use to use HAPROXY to redirect the traffic to https, but try as I might I cant get it to work. • DataBinder Eval and Indexed properties

    - by erwin21
    As you probably know you can “Eval” an array property like below: <%# Eval("MyArray[0].Title") %> .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; }But what if your data object has indexed property? how do “Eval” that? Well it’s easier then you think it is: <%# Eval("[0]") %> .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; }And if your indexed property is based on for example a NameValueCollection you can “Eval” it like this: <%# Eval("[key]") %> .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } As you see it’s very easy to “Eval” this kind of properties in you web application.

  • Gnome-shell fails to load on 12.10

    - by Githlar
    I'm usually the one answering questions, but in this I'm throughly stumped! My Setup: Ubuntu 12.10 (Dist upgrade form 12.04) ATI M96 [Mobility Radeon HD 4650] Upon the first installation of 12.10 I had all kinds of issues getting the Legacy ATI drivers to install (I guess the source for the drivers isn't kosher with kernel 3.5). So, I added the repository ppa:makson96/fglrx - which has a version of the ATI source patched to work with kernel 3.5. After installation of fglrx-legacy from that PPA, gnome-shell and all my graphics work fine... until today. The Problem I unsuspended my computer today and the screen was black (not off, the black from the gnome lock screen). I'd move my mouse/hit a key and the background would flash and then it'd go back to black. Restarted via VT1 Logged into Gnome (gnome-shell) session, but no gnome-shell! Investigation: First, I went to VT1 and tried export DISPLAY=:0;gnome-shell --replace. It appeared to work fine, switch back to X and nothing. Went back to VT1 and saw this error message: JS ERROR: !!! Exception was: TypeError: Object 0x7fc748129c30 is not a subclass of (null), it's a xO JS ERROR: !!! message = '"Object 0x7fc748129c30 is not a subclass of (null), it's a xO"' JS ERROR: !!! fileName = '"/usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/tweener.js"' JS ERROR: !!! lineNumber = '218' JS ERROR: !!! stack = '"()@/usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/tweener.js:218 wrapper()@/usr/share/gjs-1.0/lang.js:204 ()@/usr/share/gjs-1.0/lang.js:145 ()@/usr/share/gjs-1.0/lang.js:239 init()@/usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/tweener.js:49 init()@/usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/environment.js:96 @<main>:1 "' Window manager warning: Log level 32: Execution of main.js threw exception: TypeError: Object 0x7fc748129c30 is not a subclass of (null), it's a xO Note: Everywhere it says "it's a xO", xO is actually garbled and changes every time (I'm thinking memory corruption?) • Using xsl:variable in a xsl:foreach select statment

    - by Nefariousity
    I'm trying to iterate through an xml document using xsl:foreach but I need the select=" " to be dynamic so I'm using a variable as the source. Here's what I've tried: ... <xsl:template name="SetDataPath"> <xsl:param name="Type" /> <xsl:variable name="Path_1">/Rating/Path1/*</xsl:variable> <xsl:variable name="Path_2">/Rating/Path2/*</xsl:variable> <xsl:if test="$Type='1'"> <xsl:value-of select="$Path_1"/> </xsl:if> <xsl:if test="$Type='2'"> <xsl:value-of select="$Path_2"/> </xsl:if> <xsl:template> ... <!-- Set Data Path according to Type --> <xsl:variable name="DataPath"> <xsl:call-template name="SetDataPath"> <xsl:with-param name="Type" select="/Rating/Type" /> </xsl:call-template> </xsl:variable> ... <xsl:for-each select="$DataPath"> ... The foreach threw an error stating: "XslTransformException - To use a result tree fragment in a path expression, first convert it to a node-set using the msxsl:node-set() function." When I use the msxsl:node-set() function though, my results are blank. I'm aware that I'm setting $DataPath to a string, but shouldn't the node-set() function be creating a node set from it? Am I missing something? When I don't use a variable: <xsl:for-each select="/Rating/Path1/*"> I get the proper results. Here's the XML data file I'm using: <Rating> <Type>1</Type> <Path1> <sarah> <dob>1-3-86</dob> <user>Sarah</user> </sarah> <joe> <dob>11-12-85</dob> <user>Joe</user> </joe> </Path1> <Path2> <jeff> <dob>11-3-84</dob> <user>Jeff</user> </jeff> <shawn> <dob>3-5-81</dob> <user>Shawn</user> </shawn> </Path2> </Rating> My question is simple, how do you run a foreach on 2 different paths?

  • How to overcome shortcomings in reporting from EAV database?

    - by David Archer
    The major shortcomings with Entity-Attribute-Value database designs in SQL all seem to be related to being able to query and report on the data efficiently and quickly. Most of the information I read on the subject warn against implementing EAV due to these problems and the commonality of querying/reporting for almost all applications. I am currently designing a system where almost all the fields necessary for data storage are not known at design/compile time and are defined by the end-user of the system. EAV seems like a good fit for this requirement but due to the problems I've read about, I am hesitant in implementing it as there are also some pretty heavy reporting requirements for this system as well. I think I've come up with a way around this but would like to pose the question to the SO community. Given that typical normalized database (OLTP) still isn't always the best option for running reports, a good practice seems to be having a "reporting" database (OLAP) where the data from the normalized database is copied to, indexed extensively, and possibly denormalized for easier querying. Could the same idea be used to work around the shortcomings of an EAV design? The main downside I see are the increased complexity of transferring the data from the EAV database to reporting as you may end up having to alter the tables in the reporting database as new fields are defined in the EAV database. But that is hardly impossible and seems to be an acceptable tradeoff for the increased flexibility given by the EAV design. This downside also exists if I use a non-SQL data store (i.e. CouchDB or similar) for the main data storage since all the standard reporting tools are expecting a SQL backend to query against. Do the issues with EAV systems mostly go away if you have a seperate reporting database for querying? EDIT: Thanks for the comments so far. One of the important things about the system I'm working on it that I'm really only talking about using EAV for one of the entities, not everything in the system. The whole gist of the system is to be able to pull data from multiple disparate sources that are not known ahead of time and crunch the data to come up with some "best known" data about a particular entity. So every "field" I'm dealing with is multi-valued and I'm also required to track history for each. The normalized design for this ends up being 1 table per field which makes querying it kind of painful anyway. Here are the table schemas and sample data I'm looking at (obviously changed from what I'm working on but I think it illustrates the point well): EAV Tables Person ------------------- - Id - Name - ------------------- - 123 - Joe Smith - ------------------- Person_Value ------------------------------------------------------------------- - PersonId - Source - Field - Value - EffectiveDate - ------------------------------------------------------------------- - 123 - CIA - HomeAddress - 123 Cherry Ln - 2010-03-26 - - 123 - DMV - HomeAddress - 561 Stoney Rd - 2010-02-15 - - 123 - FBI - HomeAddress - 676 Lancas Dr - 2010-03-01 - ------------------------------------------------------------------- Reporting Table Person_Denormalized ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Id - Name - HomeAddress - HomeAddress_Confidence - HomeAddress_EffectiveDate - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - 123 - Joe Smith - 123 Cherry Ln - 0.713 - 2010-03-26 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Normalized Design Person ------------------- - Id - Name - ------------------- - 123 - Joe Smith - ------------------- Person_HomeAddress ------------------------------------------------------ - PersonId - Source - Value - Effective Date - ------------------------------------------------------ - 123 - CIA - 123 Cherry Ln - 2010-03-26 - - 123 - DMV - 561 Stoney Rd - 2010-02-15 - - 123 - FBI - 676 Lancas Dr - 2010-03-01 - ------------------------------------------------------ The "Confidence" field here is generated using logic that cannot be expressed easily (if at all) using SQL so my most common operation besides inserting new values will be pulling ALL data about a person for all fields so I can generate the record for the reporting table. This is actually easier in the EAV model as I can do a single query. In the normalized design, I end up having to do 1 query per field to avoid a massive cartesian product from joining them all together.

    Is there anyway to loop through an index in a boost::multi_index and perform a replace? #include <iostream> #include <string> #include <boost/multi_index_container.hpp> #include <boost/multi_index/composite_key.hpp> #include <boost/multi_index/member.hpp> #include <boost/multi_index/ordered_index.hpp> using namespace boost::multi_index; using namespace std; struct name_record { public: name_record(string given_name_,string family_name_,string other_name_) { given_name=given_name_; family_name=family_name_; other_name=other_name_; } string given_name; string family_name; string other_name; string get_name() const { return given_name + " " + family_name + " " + other_name; } void setnew(string chg) { given_name = given_name + chg; family_name = family_name + chg; } }; struct NameIndex{}; typedef multi_index_container< name_record, indexed_by< ordered_non_unique< tag<NameIndex>, composite_key < name_record, BOOST_MULTI_INDEX_MEMBER(name_record,string, name_record::given_name), BOOST_MULTI_INDEX_MEMBER(name_record,string, name_record::family_name) > > > > name_record_set; typedef boost::multi_index::index<name_record_set,NameIndex>::type::iterator IteratorType; typedef boost::multi_index::index<name_record_set,NameIndex>::type NameIndexType; void printContainer(name_record_set & ns) { cout << endl << "PrintContainer" << endl << "-------------" << endl; IteratorType it1 = ns.begin(); IteratorType it2 = ns.end (); while (it1 != it2) { cout<<it1->get_name()<<endl; it1++; } cout << "--------------" << endl << endl; } void modifyContainer(name_record_set & ns) { cout << endl << "ModifyContainer" << endl << "-------------" << endl; IteratorType it3; IteratorType it4; NameIndexType & idx1 = ns.get<NameIndex>(); IteratorType it1 = idx1.begin(); IteratorType it2 = idx1.end(); while (it1 != it2) { cout<<it1->get_name()<<endl; name_record nr = *it1; nr.setnew("_CHG"); bool res = idx1.replace(it1,nr); cout << "result is: " << res << endl; it1++; } cout << "--------------" << endl << endl; } int main() { name_record_set ns; ns.insert( name_record("Joe","Smith","ENTRY1") ); ns.insert( name_record("Robert","Brown","ENTRY2") ); ns.insert( name_record("Robert","Nightingale","ENTRY3") ); ns.insert( name_record("Marc","Tuxedo","ENTRY4") ); printContainer (ns); modifyContainer (ns); printContainer (ns); return 0; } PrintContainer ------------- Joe Smith ENTRY1 Marc Tuxedo ENTRY4 Robert Brown ENTRY2 Robert Nightingale ENTRY3 -------------- ModifyContainer ------------- Joe Smith ENTRY1 result is: 1 Marc Tuxedo ENTRY4 result is: 1 Robert Brown ENTRY2 result is: 1 -------------- PrintContainer ------------- Joe_CHG Smith_CHG ENTRY1 Marc_CHG Tuxedo_CHG ENTRY4 Robert Nightingale ENTRY3 Robert_CHG Brown_CHG ENTRY2 --------------

  • JSON Formatting with Jersey, Jackson, & json.org/java Parser using Curl Command

    - by socal_javaguy
    Using Java 6, Tomcat 7, Jersey 1.15, Jackson 2.0.6 (from FasterXml maven repo), & www.json.org parser, I am trying to pretty print the JSON String so it will look indented by the curl -X GET command line. I created a simple web service which has the following architecture: My POJOs (model classes): Family.java import javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlRootElement; @XmlRootElement public class Family { private String father; private String mother; private List<Children> children; // Getter & Setters } Children.java import javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlRootElement; @XmlRootElement public class Children { private String name; private String age; private String gender; // Getters & Setters } Using a Utility Class, I decided to hard code the POJOs as follows: public class FamilyUtil { public static Family getFamily() { Family family = new Family(); family.setFather("Joe"); family.setMother("Jennifer"); Children child = new Children(); child.setName("Jimmy"); child.setAge("12"); child.setGender("male"); List<Children> children = new ArrayList<Children>(); children.add(child); family.setChildren(children); return family; } } My web service: import java.io.IOException; import javax.ws.rs.GET; import javax.ws.rs.Path; import javax.ws.rs.PathParam; import javax.ws.rs.Produces; import javax.ws.rs.core.MediaType; import org.codehaus.jackson.JsonGenerationException; import org.codehaus.jackson.map.JsonMappingException; import org.codehaus.jackson.map.ObjectMapper; import org.codehaus.jettison.json.JSONException; import org.json.JSONObject; import org.json.JSONTokener; import com.myapp.controller.myappController; import com.myapp.resource.output.HostingSegmentOutput; import com.myapp.util.FamilyUtil; @Path("") public class MyWebService { @GET @Produces(MediaType.APPLICATION_JSON) public static String getFamily() throws IOException, JsonGenerationException, JsonMappingException, JSONException, org.json.JSONException { ObjectMapper mapper = new ObjectMapper(); String uglyJsonString = mapper.writeValueAsString(FamilyUtil.getFamily()); System.out.println(uglyJsonString); JSONTokener tokener = new JSONTokener(uglyJsonString); JSONObject finalResult = new JSONObject(tokener); return finalResult.toString(4); } } When I run this using: curl -X GET http://localhost:8080/mywebservice I get this in my Eclipse's console: {"father":"Joe","mother":"Jennifer","children":[{"name":"Jimmy","age":"12","gender":"male"}]} But from the curl command on the command line (this response is more important): "{\n \"mother\": \"Jennifer\",\n \"children\": [{\n \"age\": \"12\",\n \"name\": \"Jimmy\",\n \"gender\": \"male\"\n }],\n \"father\": \"Joe\"\n}" This is adding newline escape sequences and placing double quotes (but not indenting like it should it does have 4 spaces after the new line but its all in one line). Would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.

  • JSON posting, am i pushing JSON too far?

    - by joe90
    Im just wondering if I am pushing JSON too far? and if anyone has hit this before? I have a xml file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <customermodel:Customer xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:customermodel="http://customermodel" xmlns:personal="http://customermodel/personal" id="1" age="1" name="Joe"> <bankAccounts xsi:type="customermodel:BankAccount" accountNo="10" bankName="HSBC" testBoolean="true" testDate="2006-10-23" testDateTime="2006-10-23T22:15:01+08:00" testDecimal="20.2" testTime="22:15:01+08:00"> <count>0</count> <bankAddressLine>HSBC</bankAddressLine> <bankAddressLine>London</bankAddressLine> <bankAddressLine>31 florence</bankAddressLine> <bankAddressLine>Swindon</bankAddressLine> </bankAccounts> </customermodel:Customer> Which contains elements and attributes.... Which when i convert to JSON gives me: {"customermodel:Customer":{"id":"1","name":"Joe","age":"1","xmlns:xsi":"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance","bankAccounts":{"testDate":"2006-10-23","testDecimal":"20.2","count":"0","testDateTime":"2006-10-23T22:15:01+08:00","bankAddressLine":["HSBC","London","31 florence","Swindon"],"testBoolean":"true","bankName":"HSBC","accountNo":"10","xsi:type":"customermodel:BankAccount","testTime":"22:15:01+08:00"},"xmlns:personal":"http://customermodel/personal","xmlns:customermodel":"http://customermodel"}} So then i send this too the client.. which coverts to a js object (or whatever) edits some values (the elements) and then sends it back to the server. So i get the JSON string, and convert this back into XML: <customermodel:Customer> <id>1</id> <age>1</age> <name>Joe</name> <xmlns:xsi>http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance</xmlns:xsi> <bankAccounts> <testDate>2006-10-23</testDate> <testDecimal>20.2</testDecimal> <testDateTime>2006-10-23T22:15:01+08:00</testDateTime> <count>0</count> <bankAddressLine>HSBC</bankAddressLine> <bankAddressLine>London</bankAddressLine> <bankAddressLine>31 florence</bankAddressLine> <bankAddressLine>Swindon</bankAddressLine> <accountNo>10</accountNo> <bankName>HSBC</bankName> <testBoolean>true</testBoolean> <xsi:type>customermodel:BankAccount</xsi:type> <testTime>22:15:01+08:00</testTime> </bankAccounts> <xmlns:personal>http://customermodel/personal</xmlns:personal> <xmlns:customermodel>http://customermodel</xmlns:customermodel> </customermodel:Customer> And there is the problem, is doesn't seem to know the difference between elements/attributes so i can not check against a XSD to check this is now valid? Is there a solution to this? I cannot be the first to hit this problem?

  • How to program a neural network for chess?

    - by marco92w
    Hello! I want to program a chess engine which learns to make good moves and win against other players. I've already coded a representation of the chess board and a function which outputs all possible moves. So I only need an evaluation function which says how good a given situation of the board is. Therefore, I would like to use an artificial neural network which should then evaluate a given position. The output should be a numerical value. The higher the value is, the better is the position for the white player. My approach is to build a network of 385 neurons: There are six unique chess pieces and 64 fields on the board. So for every field we take 6 neurons (1 for every piece). If there is a white piece, the input value is 1. If there is a black piece, the value is -1. And if there is no piece of that sort on that field, the value is 0. In addition to that there should be 1 neuron for the player to move. If it is White's turn, the input value is 1 and if it's Black's turn, the value is -1. I think that configuration of the neural network is quite good. But the main part is missing: How can I implement this neural network into a coding language (e.g. Delphi)? I think the weights for each neuron should be the same in the beginning. Depending on the result of a match, the weights should then be adjusted. But how? I think I should let 2 computer players (both using my engine) play against each other. If White wins, Black gets the feedback that its weights aren't good. So it would be great if you could help me implementing the neural network into a coding language (best would be Delphi, otherwise pseudo-code). Thanks in advance!

  • Remove duplicates from a sorted ArrayList while keeping some elements from the duplicates

    - by js82
    Okay at first I thought this would be pretty straightforward. But I can't think of an efficient way to solve this. I figured a brute force way to solve this but that's not very elegant. I have an ArrayList. Contacts is a VO class that has multiple members - name, regions, id. There are duplicates in ArrayList because different regions appear multiple times. The list is sorted by ID. Here is an example: Entry 0 - Name: John Smith; Region: N; ID: 1 Entry 1 - Name: John Smith; Region: MW; ID: 1 Entry 2 - Name: John Smith; Region: S; ID: 1 Entry 3 - Name: Jane Doe; Region: NULL; ID: 2 Entry 4 - Name: Jack Black; Region: N; ID: 3 Entry 6 - Name: Jack Black; Region: MW; ID: 3 Entry 7 - Name: Joe Don; Region: NE; ID: 4 I want to transform the list to below by combining duplicate regions together for the same ID. Therefore, the final list should have only 4 distinct elements with the regions combined. So the output should look like this:- Entry 0 - Name: John Smith; Region: N,MW,S; ID: 1 Entry 1 - Name: Jane Doe; Region: NULL; ID: 2 Entry 2 - Name: Jack Black; Region: N,MW; ID: 3 Entry 3 - Name: Joe Don; Region: NE; ID: 4 What are your thoughts on the optimal way to solve this? I am not looking for actual code but ideas or tips to go about the best way to get it done. Thanks for your time!!!

  • jQuery fadein fadeout divs over set interval

    - by theDawckta
    I want to fadeOut the first div in a collection and then fadeIn the next div. The fade in out would trigger at a set time. The number of items in the collection is 1 to n. Here is an example of the html; <div class="contentPanel"> <div class="content"> <div style="border: solid 2px black; text-align: center"> This is first content </div> </div> <div class="content"> <div style="border: solid 2px black; text-align: center"> This is second content </div> </div> <div class="content"> <div style="border: solid 2px black; text-align: center"> This is third content </div> </div> </div> So on page load the first "content" class would be visible, after x amount of time, the current "content" would fadeout and the next "content" would fade in. When it got to the nth "content" it would start over, fadeout the nth "content" and fadein the first "content". This behavior would loop continuously.

  • Using the Apple Scripting bridge with Mail to send an attachment causes the message background to go

    - by Naym
    Hello, When I use the Apple Scripting Bridge to send a message with an attachment the background of the message is set to black which is a problem because the text is also black. The code in question is: MailApplication *mail = [SBApplication applicationWithBundleIdentifier:@"com.apple.Mail"]; /* create a new outgoing message object */ MailOutgoingMessage *emailMessage = [[[mail classForScriptingClass:@"outgoing message"] alloc] initWithProperties: [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjectsAndKeys: emailSubject, @"subject", [self composeEmailBody], @"content", nil]]; /* add the object to the mail app */ [[mail outgoingMessages] addObject: emailMessage]; /* set the sender, show the message */ emailMessage.sender = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@ <%@>",[[[mail accounts] objectAtIndex:playerOptions.mailAccount] fullName],[[[[mail accounts] objectAtIndex:playerOptions.mailAccount] emailAddresses] objectAtIndex:0]]; emailMessage.visible = YES; /* create a new recipient and add it to the recipients list */ MailToRecipient *theRecipient = [[[mail classForScriptingClass:@"to recipient"] alloc] initWithProperties: [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjectsAndKeys: opponentEmail, @"address", nil]]; [emailMessage.toRecipients addObject: theRecipient]; /* add an attachment, if one was specified */ if ( [playerInfo.gameFile length] > 0 ) { /* create an attachment object */ MailAttachment *theAttachment = [[[mail classForScriptingClass:@"attachment"] alloc] initWithProperties: [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjectsAndKeys: playerInfo.gameFile, @"fileName", nil]]; /* add it to the list of attachments */ [[emailMessage.content attachments] addObject: theAttachment]; } /* send the message */ [emailMessage send]; The actual change to the background colour occurs on the second last line, which is: [[emailMessage.content attachments] addObject: theAttachment]; The code sections above are essentially lifted from the SBSendMail example code from Apple. At this stage I've really only made the changes necessary to integrate with the data from my application. If I build and run the SBSendMail example after freshly downloading it from Apple the message background is also changed to black with execution of the same line. It does not appear to matter which type of file is attached, where it is located, or on which computer or operating system is used. This could be a bug in Apple's scripting bridge but has anyone come across this problem and found a solution? ALternatively does anyone know if the background colour of a MailOutgoingMessage instance can be changed with the scripting bridge? Thanks for any assistance with this, Naym.

  • Why does the following Toggle function perform four different operations instead of two?

    - by marcamillion
    You can see the implementation here: http://jsfiddle.net/BMWZd/8/ What I am trying to do, when you click on 'John Brown', you see the first element at top turn black. When you click it again, the border of the dotted circle disappears, then when you click 'John Brown' again, you see something else, then finally once again it all disappears. What I am trying to achieve is when you click it once, everything turns black (like it does now), then you click it again, everything disappears and goes back to the original state. Important distinction, what I mean is...when one of the names in the box are not clicked. So if you clicked John Brown then moved to Jack Dorsey, the #1 at top should stay black. But if you were to click Jack Dorsey again, i.e. you 'unclicked' it, then it should disappear. Also, how do I tighten it up, so that it responds quicker. Now when you click it, it feels like there is a little bit of a lag between when it was clicked and when it responds. Edit1: If anyone is interested...the UI that this will be used in is for my webapp - http://www.compversions.com

  • How do I render *parts* of a svg file?

    - by Fake Code Monkey Rashid
    Hello good people! :) I want to render parts of a svg file by name but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to do so (using python + gtk). Here's the svg file in question: http://david.bellot.free.fr/svg-cards/files/SVG-cards-2.0.1.tar.gz On his site, David, says: You can draw a card either by rendering the file onto a pixmap and clipping each card manually or by using the card's name through a DOM interface. All cards are embedded into a SVG group. I don't know what he means by a DOM interface. I have done some searching and the best result I found that seems to fit what I want to do is: QSvgRenderer *renderer = new QSvgRenderer(QLatin1String("SvgCardDeck.svg")); QGraphicsSvgItem *black = new QGraphicsSvgItem(); QGraphicsSvgItem *red = new QGraphicsSvgItem(); black->setSharedRenderer(renderer); black->setElementId(QLatin1String("black_joker")); red->setSharedRenderer(renderer); red->setElementId(QLatin1String("red_joker")); Notice however that it is for Qt and is not even written in python. This is what I have so far: #!/usr/bin/env python from __future__ import absolute_import import cairo import gtk import rsvg from xml import xpath from xml.dom import minidom window = gtk.Window() window.set_title("Foo") window.set_size_request(256, 256) window.set_property("resizable", False) window.set_position(gtk.WIN_POS_CENTER) window.connect("destroy", gtk.main_quit) window.show() document = minidom.parse("cards.svg") element = xpath.Evaluate("//*[@id='1_club']", document)[0] xml = element.toxml() svg = rsvg.Handle() svg.write(xml) pixbuf = svg.get_pixbuf() image = gtk.Image() image.set_from_pixbuf(pixbuf) image.show() window.add(image) gtk.main() It doesn't work, of course. What am I missing?

    - by David
    Hi, I use this function to resize images but i end up with ugly creepy image with a black background if it's a transparent GIF or PNG with alpha, however it works perfectly for jpg and normal png. function cropImage($nw, $nh, $source, $stype, $dest) { $size = getimagesize($source); $w = $size[0]; $h = $size[1]; switch($stype) { case 'gif': $simg = imagecreatefromgif($source); break; case 'jpg': $simg = imagecreatefromjpeg($source); break; case 'png': $simg = imagecreatefrompng($source); break; } $dimg = imagecreatetruecolor($nw, $nh); switch ($stype) { case "png": imagealphablending( $dimg, false ); imagesavealpha( $dimg, true ); $transparent = imagecolorallocatealpha($dimg, 255, 255, 255, 127); imagefilledrectangle($dimg, 0, 0, $nw, $nh, $transparent); break; case "gif": // integer representation of the color black (rgb: 0,0,0) $background = imagecolorallocate($simg, 0, 0, 0); // removing the black from the placeholder imagecolortransparent($simg, $background); break; } $wm = $w/$nw; $hm = $h/$nh; $h_height = $nh/2; $w_height = $nw/2; if($w> $h) { $adjusted_width = $w / $hm; $half_width = $adjusted_width / 2; $int_width = $half_width - $w_height; imagecopyresampled($dimg,$simg,-$int_width,0,0,0,$adjusted_width,$nh,$w,$h); } elseif(($w <$h) || ($w == $h)) { $adjusted_height = $h / $wm; $half_height = $adjusted_height / 2; $int_height = $half_height - $h_height; imagecopyresampled($dimg,$simg,0,-$int_height,0,0,$nw,$adjusted_height,$w,$h); } else { imagecopyresampled($dimg,$simg,0,0,0,0,$nw,$nh,$w,$h); } imagejpeg($dimg,$dest,100); } I use php 5.3.2 and the GD library bundled (2.0.34 compatible) Thanks

  • Finding out max available print area

    - by Armagan
    I'm trying to find out max available area on my printer. I've printed a simple rectangle trying out different boundary variables. My question is, why doesn't first two work correctly? They don't print a full rectangle on the paper, only the left and top sides are drawn. Why does only the third one prints a full rectangle? I was under the impression of that all three should be working correctly. What am I missing? Here's my code: this.printDocument1.DefaultPageSettings.Margins = new Margins(0, 0, 0, 0); ... private void PrintPage(object sender, PrintPageEventArgs e) { //Method 1, no right and bottom sides are printed e.Graphics.DrawRectangle(new Pen(Color.Black, 1), e.PageBounds); //Method 2, same as Method 1 e.Graphics.DrawRectangle(new Pen(Color.Black, 1), e.MarginBounds); //Method 3, works correctly e.Graphics.DrawRectangle(new Pen(Color.Black, 1), new Rectangle((int)e.Graphics.VisibleClipBounds.X, (int)e.Graphics.VisibleClipBounds.Y, (int)e.Graphics.VisibleClipBounds.Width, (int)e.Graphics.VisibleClipBounds.Height)); }

  • custom grid style in silverlight 4

    - by Archie
    Hello, I want to set background of a grid using a style. I style I'm setting the Background Property of the grid. But I have a border filled with LinearGradientFill and a Path which also has LinearGradientFill in it. But I'm not able to combine both. Below is sample code. I want to create it as a style. <Grid> <Border BorderBrush="Black" BorderThickness="2"> <Border.Background> <LinearGradientBrush EndPoint="1,0.5" StartPoint="0,0.5"> <GradientStop Color="Black" Offset="0.953" /> <GradientStop Color="White" Offset="0" /> </LinearGradientBrush> </Border.Background> </Border> <Path Data="M 0,0 C 0,620 10,10 560,0" Height="60" VerticalAlignment="Top"> <Path.Fill> <LinearGradientBrush EndPoint="1,0.5" StartPoint="0,0.5"> <GradientStop Color="Black" Offset="0" /> <GradientStop Color="White" Offset="0.779" /> </LinearGradientBrush> </Path.Fill> </Path> </Grid> It gives me an error as The Property 'Value' is set more than once. Can anyone help me with it? Thanks.
