• Access MacZFS via network from XBMC

  I have a ZFS RAID (zpool with three drives) hooked up to my Mac that I want to share in my LAN so that the XBMC client on my OUYA console hooked up to the television can read the drive and use it to stream my movies and television shows onto the television set. I've searched around for a bit but so far haven't found anything that helped me with it. I know that when connecting to the Mac with SSH I can't just access the drive due to different formatting. What do I have to do so that XBMC will be able to read it? How do I share it?

• Can Remote Desktop connect only 2 monitors when the client has 3 or 4 monitors connected?

  I have three monitors (all 1920x1200) connected to my desktop and I would like to RDP into another computer (running Windows Server 2003) and use only two of my three monitors. The main monitor is used for notification from the LAN like email, build status, etc. I've tried modifying the .rdp file to have a higher resolution (i.e. 3840x1200 ) which sort of works but the bits per pixel goes down to 8 and you have to manually resize the window which means that you need to change it to around 3840x1150. If I supply /span to the commandline it gives me a bit more than 3840 spanned across the three monitors (is there perhaps a limitation of say 4096 for the maximum resolution?). WORKAROUND: Connect twice to the same computer.   What I'm trying to do: Connect to the internet without registering But! Here's my problem: I can't connect. I used to be able to, now when I try to connect it says "Server not found." I can connect just fine on my other Laptop. I did a test as well. I used a LAN USB adapter and could connect fine, then now I can't connect again. Possibly because I am using uTorrent to download stuff, but I want to connect again Is there anyway I can use some sort of "virtual adapter"-type of connection where it masks my actual adapter? How can I connect to the connection without having to buy more and more Network USB Adapters? Thanks much!

• When connected to VPN through Windows 7 running under OS X via VMWare Fusion, does traffic from the OS X side go through the VPN?

  I only have a rudimentary knowledge of VPNs. My understanding is that, in most network configurations, when a client is connected remotely to a VPN server, all network traffic passes through the VPN server before going to the client, and all data coming from the client passes through the VPN server before going out over the wider Internet. I run Windows 7 using VMWare Fusion under OS X Lion. If I access a web page in Safari, say, on the OS X side of things, does that traffic pass through the VPN server? Or does it bypass it because the two OS's are regarded as separate network devices by my LAN? I would appreciate any insight anyone can provide. Thanks.

  I have a server (debian) with two network interfaces that I would like to host multiple services and domains on; it is not entirely clear to me how the hosts file should be set up. Example: eth0, bound to WAN interface 1.2.3.4: mail.example.com www.example.com eth0:1, bound to WAN interface 1.2.3.5: www.other-domain.com eth1, bound to LAN 192.168.1.123: some-clever-hostname What should my hosts file look like? (including localhost,localhost.localdomain, etc.) Should I use DNS for some of these entries? Which ones? Thanks!

• Determining where a file is being cached

  I've got a debian webserver running apache, from which I regularly download an executable using IE 8 on an XP virtual machine (over LAN). However, I realised that somewhere along the line that I've been repeatedly running the same version (and wondering why my changes weren't being displayed). A Ctrl+F5 in IE will let me download the new version (although the page is always updated with a simple F5). This makes me suspect that the caching is happening in windows/IE, but I'm not certain. Wherever it's happening, is there an easy way to prevent it at the server? Eventually, we're hoping to offer the software to the entire company, and we'd like to avoid having to tell everyone to do a Ctrl+F5 every time there's an updated version.

  I need to sync some folders between two Win 7 machines. While they are connected to the same LAN, they can't see each-other over Windows Networking since sharing is disabled on both of them (security reasons). Do you know any sync app which can work over IP? The folder I need to sync has 500,000 files in it (80 GB in total), so the sync app should be pretty efficient. At the moment I copy the files from one machine to the other over FTP, but it takes forever, since a separate connection is opened for each file. Or maybe you know some app which can efficiently transfer a large number of files between two machines on the Internet?

  I need to secure a dedicated server for intranet use, the server is managed so will have software based security, but what other security should be considered for enterprise level security? The intranet is a host for an ECM (Alfresco) managing and storing sensitive documents. As the information is sensitive we are trying to make it as secure as reasonably possible (requirement in UK law). We plan to encrypt the data on the database.   I would like to build a file server for my home network using Ubuntu. It will serve files from RAID1 configured disks, either in the OS or in hardware. It will be connected to a Gigabit ethernet LAN. The disks will use an encrypted file system. It will serve samba shares. I would like a recommendation on what kind of processing power/memory I would need to build a box that would be able to sustain the full capacity of the Gigabit ethernet connection in a file transfer for a single connection with the overhead of serving from an encrypted disk. I'm not looking to build a dream server, I just want enough processing capacity for high performance (and reliable) file sharing and spend as little as possible for it. This may be tangential, but what kind of hardware would I need to have a server be able to reliably go into a low power mode when no requests are being made of it?

• PC reboots instead of shutting down, no software problem. What could be the cause?

  Hi, first of all: I'm not sure if superuser is the right site for my question and google didn't help. I have a pc here that prefers rebooting to shuting down. Everytime I try to shut the pc down it reboots, however it is possible to turn the pc off by pressing the power button. The problem is not windows-specific, the Ubuntu LiveCD does exactly the same that's why I said that it is no software problem. I checked wake on LAN, it is disabled and I also resetted the BIOS settings to factory default. That might not mean that it can't be a BIOS problem but I don't know what else to try here. I did not check any hardware yet but nothing exploded so far. I don't know what could have caused this behaviour as it is not my PC. The Mainboard is a ASUS P5Q-E P45.

LAN 192.168.2.1/21 WAN1 200.41.X.2/24 WAN2 200.41.X.3/24 ISP Gateway 200.41.X.1 This is a connection with 5 different IP addresses. WAN1 and WAN2 are directly connected to my ISP router. I need a way to configure some clients navigating through WAN1 and some through WAN2. I am new to pfsense so, please, if you can send me some examples to do this. • IIS7.5 website (mostly) inaccessible from the outside world

  On the network firewall, I opened up port 80 and forwarded it to the Windows Server 2008 R2 running IIS 7.5. Port 80 is open in the Windows firewall. On the LAN, the website is accessible without any trouble. When accessed from the outside, I can access it only 3 times every few hours before access to it cuts out from the outside. There aren't any access limits in IIS or the network's firewall as far as I can tell. IIS is running PHP 5.3. The default website has been deleted. The bindings for the website's domain are set for mydomain.com *:80 and mydomain.com 192.168.0.3:80

• Seemingly random disconnections on Windows Server 2008 R2

  So I have a box running a Windows Server 2008 R2 in my LAN, which is running, among other things, a voip server used by other people. I myself am in the same subnet with the server, while the other users are not. Now, maybe on average twice a day, all the other users get disconnected from the server (and if I take a remote desktop connection to it, I'm not able to open any web pages either). These disconnections usually last only about 5 seconds, but sometimes they may last up to a minute. What could possibly cause this? I have all the updates installed from windows update and the motherboard of the server is asus p5b deluxe (if that is of any interest). edit: Forgot to mention that my own internet connectivity stays intact while the server's does not, and both computers are behind the same router.

• Unable to run Django on Mac OS X

  I'm working with a Django project on my Mac (running Leopard) and I want to show it to my team. I've already passed the neccessary port forwards from my router to my Mac's LAN IP address but it doesn't work. I've also tried running the XAMPP server since that always worked with my Windows XP computer but it still doesn't work. Whenever I type my > it's showing a Page Load Error. Is this possibly an issue with an Mac OS X configuration that I need to setup first to allow my port forwards to get in? It's my first time to do this with Mac, perhaps I need to configure something else in network preferences?

• Free firewall for Windows Server 2003

  We have a Windows Server 2003 R2 Machine here at work that I need to ensure is accessible only from specific set of IP Addresses. The Server is on a LAN and I am aware that one of the possible solutions maybe limit access to the Server's VLAN. However that is not feasible at the moment. I've been searching for a firewall that could do this, Windows' Firewall is pretty limited and I don't see an option in it to limit incoming data based on Source IP addresses. Most free firewalls like Comodo and ZoneAlarm don't work on Windows Server. Any ideas on how to accomplish this would be of great help. Thanks in advance.

• How many xml http requests is too much for a pc to handle?

  I'm running mediawiki on an apache on a regular pc running vista (don't know the specific specs, but I'm guessing at least duo core 2 2 giga hertz processor, broadband connection (500 kb/s at least, probably 1 mega). I want to use the MediaWiki api to send a lot of requests to this server. Most of the time the requests will be sent through LAN (but sometimes through the internet). I'm talking thousands of requests every few seconds at worst case. (A lot of these requests may repeat themselves, I guess some sort of cache would help) Will the server handle this, or do I need a stronger/dedicated computer? (I'm not looking for specific yes/no, but just want to get an idea as to what configuration of computer will support how many request per second) Thanks

  My system is connected with a local LAN connection with 30 PC's. I'm not able to access the shared drive in the network, but I'm able to ping the IP address in which the drive is present. I have checked to start all the services, which are to be started and i have check the TCP/UDP ports also, but even after that I'm not able to access the drive, the same error message is being displayed again and again. Please help me to rectify the problem. I'm trying to solve the problem for the last 1 week. • Two NICs, one server.

  I have two NICs on a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Both are config'd be dhcp. Both cards are on the same lan with same gateway. everything about the cards is the same except the IPs they get, which is what I want. What I'm trying to achieve is having both NICs operational at the same time. Currently when the server boots, it activates both NICs, but the server can't resolve any domains. If I ifdown one of them and bring it back up, the server is able to resolve domains, but the NIC I bring up won't respond to any traffic. Any ideas?

• Is it possible to host a website with Apache HTTP through a ZyXEL EQ-660R modem and a Netgear WGT624v3 wireless router?

  Essentially, I have a spare desktop computer I'd like to turn into a web server, but my modem and wireless router are very difficult to work with. I installed Apache HTTP and successfully hosted a test page which can be accessed anywhere on the LAN. However, I'm having trouble setting up the server to be accessed from my external IP address. I was supplied with a ZyXEL EQ-660R DSL modem by my ISP (CenturyLink) and bought a Netgear WGT624v3 wireless router in which to connect my laptop and spare desktop. ZyXEL's website is no help, and I don't think much of the problem is with the Netgear router. I've played with many settings and have tried to forward port 80 from the modem, but I've had no luck. Could someone direct me toward a solution or recommendations for more promising hardware? Or should I admit defeat and explore other hobbies? :)

  Dear friends, Please tell me whether it is possible for someone on the external network to see the network folder shares of an internal LAN network in DHCP (192.168.x.x) through a Comp-A on an external network in DHCP (123.123.x.x) both networks are on different subnets but Comp-A has access to both networks and can see all the shared drives of both the internal and external networks using firewall is not an option because file sharing is required everywhere. care is taken from viruses/trojans... remote desktop etc is disabled on Comp-A Please let me know.   Hi I have Windows 7 Professional. With IIS 7 or 7.5 I have set up a little website. So far all works fine on http://Localhost:80 - I can see the site. Then I set up the firewall so port 80 is open. My Router routes TCP:80 to my pc. But from my second pc I cant access the site. I can ping the other pc but why I can't access the page through the LAN? Please help!

• /etc/hosts in Windows 8.1 doesnt work like in Windows 7 [on hold]

  Last time when i installed Win7, i configured it to block some netbios names in LAN with hosts file. Something like this: 192.168.0.10 computer_name 192.168.0.10 computer_IP where 192.168.0.10 some ip-address in network, where user need to login to access it. So, when user trying to access computer_name via \\computer_name, he will redirect to 192.168.0.10 rather then going to computer_name. In Windows 8.1 I can't do this trick. I tried to disable Windows Defender, flushed DNS, nbtstat -R. Nothing works. When I pinging computer_name, IP address returning 192.168.0.10, but when I accessing it via explorer (\\computer_name\d$), it opening computer partitions. In Win7, when I trying to access \\computer_name, its trying to open 192.168.0.10 one. Maybe its not the best solution to do this, but it works in Windows 7.

  Recently, an in-house Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 was installed where I work. Unfortunately, our buildings have a bad electrical power supply and we suffer frequent outages. We have a large percentage of staff working off-site. Now when the power goes off here, everyone everywhere loses email functionality. • Make a server ( other than the router ) to be the default gateway for a subnet

  I am trying to make a server ( lets call it server_A) which is different from the router to be the gateway for a subnet. Why do I want this ? I want to host a loadbalancer on server_A using LVS-NAT, and I dont want to implement a V-Lan or IP-IP tunneling. I have modified the routing tables of the remaining servers on the subnet to use server_A as the gateway. I have set server_A to not send ICMP reroute packets. But most traffic from servers in that subnet to outside clients are still being sent through the original gateway, bypassing server_A. Is there any other configuration I need to set in order to achieve my goal ?
