• FTP error when doing file transfer

  I'm running vsftpd version 3.0.2 over FTPeS, and I'm having a bit of trouble with file transfers. It seems to work fine when I'm on the LAN, but not from an external IP address. I have the control port and data ports open on my server's software firewall and my router's firewall. When I'm using the service from an external IP address, it seems like sometimes a file transfer will complete, but it times out and I always get the client error: "426 Failure writing network stream". I've tried several clients. I'm thinking there is some sort of data sabotage either at the router or some server policy; maybe because I'm using passive ftp? Suggestions?

• Mostly offsite asset management (laptops/smartphones) - what is a good SaaS based solution?

  Most of our company assets are offsite. Everyone either works at home or onsite at a customer. Most asset management/audit/remote control software concentrate on company LAN based assets. We don't need an NMS as we use OpenNMS in the internal network. I was thinking of something like Altiris Client Management Suite but since everything is connected to the internet a SaaS based solution sounds like the ways to go. LogMeIn Central looks ok but not that comprehensive. What do you guys use?

• Windows 2003 Server Intermittent DNS Issues

  Looking for a little help here. I have a Windows 2003 DNS Server set up on our network. Lately computers on our LAN have been, at times, unable to resolve a certain sub domain for our website whereas other times the request is resolved just fine. During these periods of "downtime" all other network activity (i.e web sites, internal resolutions, network shares, etc.) remains normal. I can tell it is a problem with our DNS server because the resolution always works from outside our network. I'm hoping someone out there has experienced something similar or could at least offer me place to start troubleshooting. Thanks!

• Is there anyway I can secure my connection when I try to log in to my router remotely?

  I'm trying to configure my desktop to be accessed remotely. Here's what I've done so far: enabled wake on lan / remote wake up on all interfaces. I'm using logmein as my remote desktop application. setup DDNS so that I can log in to my router. When I try to remotely log in to my router it says that it is not encrypted there anyone can see my log in information. What can I do to make this a more secure setup? Any other suggestions or different methods will be greatly appreciated.

• Gmail outage only on one computer

  Problem: Gmail (and only Gmail) quits working for a period of 5-10 mins only on one computer. Problem occurs several times daily Does not appear to be any "triggering event" - user is simply using Gmail normally when the problem arises User can access their Gmail from other computers on same LAN User can access all other sites, including other Google sites, from affected computer After several mins of outage, Gmail will spontaneously resume normal operation on affected computer The problem occurs in all browsers (Chrome, FF, Safari) Computer: MacBook Pro, OSX 10.7.3, latest browsers I find this very baffling. Any advice welcome.

  there is a network including a router, two hosts and a switch which connects hosts to router. i have a virtual machine on my system. the network adapter is set to act as bridge. so the virtual machine and real OS are my 2 hosts on different LAN. they use one network card and are connected to a switch. when each of host send a packet to the other one, the switch duplicate the packet and forward it to both router and the other host. how can I solve the duplicate packet problem? • Printing documents on HP printer very slow

  I have a strange problem with HP drivers. I have configured a HP printer 2025dn with LAN connection, on 3 pc, using the cd rom of HP driver. All works well, but sometimes for certain documents the time for printing is very slow and long. I observe during this situation, in task manager, a process called rundll32.exe loads CPU at 100%. If I kill that process the printer starts printing fast the document in the queue. I wondering the reason of this strange behaviour.

  I have my LAN set up as below: 192.168.2.1: ADSL Router (DHCP Range: 192.168.2.2-192.168.2.250) 192.168.2.254: Wireless Access Point 192.168.2.253: Ubuntu Server (Static IP) 192.168.2.2: My Laptop (Connects to Internet via the Wireless AP) NAT in router is active and set up to transfer requests made over port 80 to 192.168.2.253. Router's firewall is inactive. No IPs in DMZ. My friends get Apache's It Works page when they try to enter http://my_external_ip. But I get Router's configuration page instead of that. • Mercurial changeset hook problem when auto updating. Server permissions maybe??

  I am using Mercurial SCM over a LAN using a normal shared folder instead of http and i'm having a problem getting the auto update hook to run.   I have two computers networked through a Netgear WG914 router which is connected to an Ipstar satellite modem via the RG47 LAN connector. The main computer is running Windows 7 Pro 64bit and the secondary computer is running Windows 7 Home Edition 32bit. On occasion there is a loss of internet connection usually on the main computer, often followed by a loss on the secondary comuter. Not, however, always the case. Windows troubleshooter, naturally, is about as much use as a politician in government.......NONE. There appears to be no problem with the ISP bad as it is and often the connection will be remade without any help from me. The difference in the OS's is not of any relevance since I had this problem before I changed over to Windows 7. Not being a nerd when it comes to networking I wonder if anyone has any constructive suggestions.

• Sound card doesn't work and yet does.

  I have a really weird one tonight. Today we had a LAN party and all of a sudden the sound on a couple PC's stopped working for programs like the games, windows media player, etc. However, when errors would popup (like trying to change the volume settings) you would here the default error chime. Restarting the computers you would here the logoff-login sounds and after a restart the sound would work for a bit in both games and apps and then suddenly stop. Restarting also didn't always fix the problem. I can't figure this out. If the sound card/driver didn't work then how could we hear sounds from the windows sound scheme? No sound with VLC, windows media player, youtube, games, nothing. The only thing I can figure out is that this is a bad game crashing the primary driver or some kind of weird virus these PC's might have picked up.

I have the original Recovery DVD for his notebook. With files like ASUS.SWM and ASUS2.SWM. But I do not know how to use this DVD to reinstall his notebook.   Say I want to use a proxy auto-config file that is stored at C:\proxy.pac. To make Internet Explorer use this configuration I have to specify the pac-file in the LAN settings in the following way: file://C:/proxy.pac But Safari, that uses the same proxy settings, will ignore it in this case. To make Safari use the pac-file I have to reference it as file:///C:/proxy.pac (3 slashes at the beginning) which, according to Wikipedia is the correct format. But this way Internet Explorer will ignore it. Opera and Chrome, that also use the same proxy settings, are fine with both ways but is there another option that will work with Safari and Internet Explorer at the same time?

  I am trying to configure name server on Ubuntu just for learning. I have followed this tutorial. After configuring bind9 I have restarted it and works well. I have no registered domain name and public IP, so I have used a random domain name(khalidiitdu.com) that is not registered. When I dig khalidiitdu.com, it shows status: NXDOMAIN. If I use nslookup command, it shows ** server can't find khalidiitdu.com: NXDOMAIN. Now question is: Is registered domain mandatory to configure bind9 within a LAN? If not please suggest me alternative ways. Thanks.....

• Debian PPTP VPN can't get out to the internet

  I've setup a Debian pptp server which seems to be running fine. I can successfully access the local services on the server when connected to the VPN, but I cannot go out of the LAN, i.e. I cannot just go to any server out on the internet. • Terminal Server 2003 Performance Troubleshooting

  Let me get your thoughts on terminal server performance problems. The server hosts average 25 users which, after running some numbers, on average use 600MB memory with their main applications running (web browser, adobe reader, IP phone client). All users are on the same LAN as server. We constantly experience slow response and short session lockups. Combined CPU usage is on average 10%. What appears strange to me is that the system shows 29GB physical memory with 25GB of it free. The page file usage is about 50% averaging 9GB used. Some server specs OS: Server 2003 32bit Enterprise with /PAE flag RAM: 32GB CPU: 2xQuad Core @ 2.27Ghz HD: RAID5 1.2GB After doing basic troubleshooting using performance monitor it leads me to believe that the performance problems are caused by the 32bit OS limitation in addressing full 32GB of physical memory even though the /PAE flag is used. Can anyone suggest something, troubleshooting steps that can lead to a more conclusive answer? Thanks

• What virtualization solution should I try next, after hitting problems w/ VMWare Player in dual-netw

  I have been using VMWare Player 2.5 for a while (Ubuntu guest on Vista host, 32-bit). VMWare had worked great until now but then I hit a brick wall: Due to some reorganization of my home network, the host machine now has to use a wireless connection to reach the Internet, while the printer, fileserver, and other important stuff are attached to a local gigabit hub. I have tried several tricks, such as editing the .vmx file, changing settings in vmnetcfg, etc, but I'm still unable to get the virtual Ubuntu box to connect each of the two virtual NICs to different networks (I did get it to recognize two NICs, but both DHCP'd onto the gigabit LAN). So, I'm ready to dump vmware for something with a little more low-level control of network settings. Virtualization is such a crowded space, I could spend months evaluating every product out there. I'm hoping for a shortcut... Can anyone recommend the best VM for my situation described above? Thanks

  I used to have a server with win2000 OS. Yesteday I updated it to win2003 server R2 service pack 2. My problem now is that in a particular moment nobody can access the server. All of the shared resource of the server are unavailable. The only solution is to restart the server although the server is running fine. I don't think that is a connection problem of the LAN, because with the win2000 this problem didn't happend. The PC is connected to the same switch and the PC have the same exact hardware.

• USB MFP print server that works with Windows x64?

  Right now, we are using the Longshine LCS-MFP101-2 to connect to our MFP device (printer/scanner combo) over LAN. However, the required driver (RMVUSB, Remote Virtual USB) cannot be installed on 64 bit Windows operating systems such as Windows XP x64 or Windows 7 x64. Since the distributor lists the product as "phased out", I do not expect any updated 64 bit drivers any time soon. :/ Because of that, I am searching for a relatively cheap SOHO MFP print server (1 USB port should be enough) which can be used with 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows. Do you have any ideas or recommendations? Thanks!
