• Why would a machine ruin three "power supply"s?

  A client of mine has an XP era eMachines. The power supply has died and been replaced 3 times. I've discharged the motherboard and checked the surge protector. In the middle of a scan with ComboFix, the machine died. It powers on and hangs before the BIOS and shows a solid yellow light. I believe the model # is T5062 or something like that. Aside from a bad outlet, what would cause the PSU to die a few times?

• What RSS Reader can handle item-updating (JIRA search) feeds?

  Thunderbird is a good rss reader in terms of being able to connect successfully to jira authenticated search feeds (where evolution-rss and Liferea can't), but really sucks when it comes to updating. A Jira search feed will give a link id to http://jira/browse/[ticket no], and if that ticket/feed-item is updated, thunderbird refuses to update it - it already has it! (even though the item date does not match). Also, if you delete the ticket update, it will never show up again for that news account. Has anybody found an RSS reader that can work with JIRA/updating RSS items? Note: this is not the same as Jira activity feeds - those work great, as each update has a unique item id To replicate: Grab a search (any search) Get it into your rss reader Read an item, modify the linked ticket Update rss and see if the ticket bumps to most recent and unread or, generically: Get an rss feed (from your hard drive?)   I'm using 2 and sometimes more input methods in windows I use ALT + left Shift for switching between languages. Sometimes, every once in a while, another action(s) trigger the language switch. It happens in the same application, (i.e. the input language changes for the same app without my request) or, while switching tasks with Alt-Tab, which causes language input to change in an arbitrary application's context. I realized that some of these actions could be the use of the scroll wheel button. It's super annoying How do I disable any other language switching, and stay only with alt+shift? Why does this happen? It happened to my in the past in these and more occasions: middle mouse click pressing Windows key pression Alt Tab (unknown)

  We're in the middle of setting up new servers, and have been having some odd problems with Apache. • Excel - graphing mean and standard deviation

  Hi all, I have measurements for multiple devices, and have their mean and sd values. I would like to produce a chart that would show these values, and I think the best would be if I could have something that looks like a bar chart(-ish) - the device names in x axis, values in y axis, and for each device to have a 'floating' bar that would represent values (mean - sd :: mean + sd), and some marker in the middle to show the actual mean value. is it doable? or would you suggest some other chart? • Is there any way to limit my Internet connection to a per program basis?

  My Linux connection is REALLY free. I live in Brazil, so where I live I can only have 1 Mbit/s. Yes I know it's sad, but it's not the point. Everytime I'm updating my Ubuntu 9.04 or downloading something, it does eat all my bandwidth. Like, while update-manager is downloading the packages, I can see by netspeed applet in my panel that the incoming traffic goes to 110 kB/s. And then, my Emesene suddenly goes disconnected, and I can't navigate. As you can imagine, I can't use my Internet connection again until the packages are all downloaded or I cancel the update in the middle. As I said, same thing happens when I'm dowloading something, but less intrusive and immediate. The question is: is there any way to limit that APT/downloads traffic to some way I can still use my other Internet services, or to reserve some bandwidth for common navigation tasks (like we have on Windows, but I forgot this thing's name, it's like "something packages".

• Reconnect Attempts for CIFS share

  I have a CIFS share mounted in the FSTAB on Ubuntu server, which connects to our SAN and works without issue. Last night we had an issue with the SAN for about 12 hours. We corrected the problem and the Windows boxes restored their mappings. The Ubuntu box did not, but we were able to restore with [mount -a]. I saw options to specify retries in man for NFS but not CIFS. Any ideas on ensuring a reconnect if the SAN goes down again?

• How to run "mongodb --repair" if it's an Upstart job?

  My MongoDB server died. The log says something about an unclean shutdown and an existing mongodb.lock file. It recommends to remove the lock file, then restart the mongodb server with --repair. However, on my system (Ubuntu 10.10), I've installed MongoDB via an apt-get package, and it's set up as Upstart job. If I run mongodb from the command line, it won't find the data, none of the paths are set correctly. Surely, I could read the man page, try to emulate what Upstart would do, give it all the correct parameters plus --repair but that seems like a lot of trouble. There must be a simpler way, that's not fighting Upstart. What is it?

• Vacation sends autoreply message to the recipient as well

  Hi, I have configured my Postfix server with vacation for a domain. Sending a message to [email protected] causes two events: The message is delivered to the recipient ([email protected]) An auto-reply message is sent to the sender, alerting that [email protected] should be used instead. Everything works well except for one particular drawback: the auto-reply is also sent to the recipient, so it receives two messages in the end. What can I do to avoid that? I'm only using the $TO variable in the custom vacation.msg message. And here is Postfix's master.cf vacation line: autoreply unix - n n - - pipe flags=Rhu user=vacation argv=/usr/bin/vacation -j -m /home/vacation/.vacation.msg -f /home/vacation/.vacation.db vacation I know using the -j is a little bit risky according to man page, but I'm kind of testing here.

• Typing Accent Marker in Hebrew on Mac

  I'm learning ancient Hebrew and wanted to make a document full of the vocabulary words I need to memorize so that I can study during my other classes. I noticed that OSX's built-in Hebrew fonts do not include the accent marker. An example: the word for "darkness" is ??????. To represent that the accent is on the first syllable, there needs to be a < over the first letter. The accent could be in the middle of the word, so I can't just throw < at the front every time. Does anyone have a free font that includes this? Any other elegant solutions are welcome. Edit: I found that it is unicode character 05AB. Is there a way to add that to the built-in Hebrew fonts?

• Can't get PHP script to run when launched from Aptana Studio

  I've been using notepad++ for web development (currently html, css, and some php and mysql). I decided to dive into an IDE to see if I could cut down on development time and have more power than notepad++. I grabbed Aptana yesterday and, after harassing it for a few hours, have finally gotten everything up and running. The only problem is that my web pages, which are .php's, do not execute any of their included .php code in the browser. as an example: <?php echo "IT WORKS WOOO"; ?> ought to print IT WORKS WOOO smack in the middle of my blank test page, and yet it does not. I checked to see if I had somehow forgotten how to do an echo statement and ran it on my desktop, using notepad++, and it worked just fine. I have the php plugin, have used the php perspective to write it and have launched it as a php web page, but nothing makes it execute the php within. Any ideas?

• Does ssh-copy-id overwrite previous keys?

  I haven't yet found any definitive answer on this using google. It seems like the answer is no, but I need to know for sure before I go ahead and do it. Does ssh-copy-id append the key to authorized_keys or does it overwrite the previous keys? Thanks. Addendum: So the answer is right there in the man page. Go figure. I guess the question can at least help fellow Google-jockeys like me who get a little too used to googling and finding tutorials (that often explain things in layman's terms for us poor folks who have only used Windows our whole lives).

  I am about to get a ton of business cards printed from my new corporation, and I am allowed to have a QR code on it, and I would really like to be able to add a photo to be attached to the vcard. • Finding optimal ddrescue command line options where Accuracy > Speed

  I'm read up a bit about this tool and obviously looked at the man pages. The trouble is that ddrescue takes so long I need to get the command right first time. • HTTP traffic through PIX VPN from outside site

  I have a remote site with a website that only allows access from the outside IP assigned to our local PIX. I have users connecting to the local networking using a VPN that need to be able to view this remote site. I don't think this works because the packets want to come in and go out over the same (ext) interface. So I'm looking for a way to make this work using the PIX or setting up a service on a server on the local network to act as a middle-man for the HTTP requests. The remote site doesn't support setting up a VPN to our PIX. The remote website is dishing out pages over a non-standard port. Can I use squid or something similar to proxy just one site?

• How long do managed gigabit ethernet switches take to boot up?

  One critical drawback that I have found in researching managed-switches, and one that I have some past experience with is that anything with "lots" of firmware is going to have lots of issues associated with that firmware. We are in the middle of researching rackmount gigabit switches (48 port). It looks like for 48 ports, our only choice is managed switches (Dell, Cisco/Linksys,HP, etc). What I want to know, that I can not find out much about is the boot-time for various managed switches. If you own one, can you please answer with the model number, and the cold boot time in seconds. I have read online that Linksys (now Cisco) SRW series sometimes take almost 5 minutes before they are fully booted up, and that is an unacceptable cost for us. I particularly want to know about Dell PowerConnect managed switch bootup time (model 3548 and 5448), and would like to confirm the 5-minute boot time on the SRW2048 or similar model, and any HP ProCurve boot up times. The composite of all those figures ought to form an interesting overall performance picture.

• Where are ghostscript options / switches documented?

  I know there is a Ghostscript option, for instance -dPDFSETTINGS=/screen - where is that documented? How can I see what other options it accepts, appart from screen? Also, -dMaxSubsetPct=100 - what does it do? I open man gs, search for PDFSET, I get "Pattern not found". I type in a search engine, I get a myriad of personal webpages, no documentation hits.   In its description of valid tcpdump expressions, the pcap-filter man pages state: The filter expression consists of one or more primitives. Primitives usually consist of an id (name or number) preceded by one or more qualifiers. In turn, these qualifiers are type, dir and proto. So far so good, but further down we find this: ip host host which is equivalent to: ether proto \ip and host host In the first case, ip and host are, respectively, proto and type. What pattern does ether proto \ip follow? Isn't that, as a whole, a proto qualifier? If so, why isn't (a properly escaped) 'ether proto \ip host host' legal (no and)?

• mounts aren't case-sensitive

  I mounted a few drives from Linux boxes in my network, but those mounts aren't case-sensitive. The mount command I used ( from the man mount.cifs, case-sensitive should be the default ): mount //10.0.1.10/remote_folder /local_folder -t cifs -o username=xxxx,password=xxxx but those mounts aren't sensitive. for example doing: ls -l /local_folder/testfile.txt ls -l /local_folder/TESTFILE.TXT give's the same result... instead of 'file not found' Couple of important points: All drives are running on Linux machines. My local machine is running Fedora 18 and it is case-sensitive for ANY folder/file expect the mounted drives. All drive/mounts are case-sensitive when when doing SSH. So if I SSH from my local machine to a remote machine, doing ls -l /local_folder/TESTFILE.TXT will say file not found as it should. So I believe the issue is in my local machine and not in the way I did the mount. but I'm not sure where to look next (I'm new to Linux)

• Can I do a "one-time" file content search in Windows Server 2008 without adding the folder to the index?

  Can I search for files which contain a specific string in a folder if that folder is not in the search index? So, lets say folder 'textFiles' is not in the index. I navigate to this folder in windows explorer. I type '.ini' in the search box I want to see a result list containing only 'b.txt' FOLDER C:\textFiles\ FILE a.php CONTENT once twice thrice mice moose monkey FILE b.txt CONTENT mingle muddle middle.ini banana beer FILE c.spo CONTENT sellotape stapler phone book I do not have permission to add folders to the windows index and I do not have permission to install or run any executables that did not ship with the server or approved applications. • Lotus Notes "Format painter" or Quick access to fonts.

  I got Lotus Notes 7.0.3 at my job and I miss the "format painter" to copy the style in my mails. Does it exist? If not, the biggest problems I got are when I paste text form another program. The style is imported and I don't like that. I got to search for the "Default sans serif" font (witch is somewhere in the middle of the font list, another annoying thing). Basically, I use "Default sans serif" for text and "Default Monospace" for code. Is there a way to put them at the top of the font list of to get a quick access to them, or maybe in a toolbar or something?

• A home router for torrents, gaming, webbing and detailed QoS [closed]

  I want to plug in an external HD on it to torrent up never ending (mostly for seeding), with lowest priority. It should even automatically completely stop if it disturbs my net usage, and go back in later. And I want to be able to give gaming (or my computer) the highest priority, because of its ping requirements. It should be above even of Skype and any voip, which also have high priority. Web surfing and "youtubing" comes in the middle - it won't matter much if it delays a second or two. Finally, interface as simple as possible. It's fine if it's command line setup, but it needs to have a GUI. What are my options for routers / firmwares as described? Maybe Gargoyle? Or even Time Capsule? It seems to me good old DD-WRT isn't the best option out there anymore. I wonder what else could cover these grounds.

• Unix tool for splitting archives

  I'm dumping an svn repository to a giant USB disk that is formatted FAT due to necessity (treat this as unchangeable). It conks out when you try to create a file larger than 4 gb. I need a tool that I can pipe data to that will create files of arbitrary size that when catted together will be the original file. I can write a tool to do this, but if one already exists I'd rather use it. Cheers EDIT: A second look at the split man page looks like it might work.
