• Oracle's Cloud Strategie nach der OOW 2012

  Auf der diesjährigen Oracle Open World war „die Cloud“ nicht nur ein vielbenutztes Buzzword, sondern auch Anlass für einige interessante Ankündigungen. Wer keine Zeit oder Muße hatte, sich die entsprechenden Keynotes von Larry Ellison und Thomas Kurian anzuhören, erfährt in diesem Artikel die wesentlichen Änderungen. Die erste Neuerung: Oracle wird in Zukunft alle drei „Sorten“ bzw. „Ebenen“ von Cloud Computing anbieten: SaaS (Software as a Service) – die Bereitstellung von kompletten Fachanwendungen z.B. aus der eBusiness Suite in Form eines Mietmodells - gab es schon länger. Abgesehen von der Tatsache, dass hier zusätzliche/neuere Komponenten und Module der durch die letzten Zukäufe von Oracle noch breiter gewordenen Palette angeboten werden, ändert sich am Prinzip nichts. Bei PaaS (Plattform as a Service) sind vor allem die beiden bereits letztes Jahr angekündigten Dienste „Database Service“ (basierend auf APEX) und „Java Service“ (basierend auf Weblogic) zu nennen, für die nun auch konkrete Pakete und Preise (ca.175$ bis 2000$/Monat) sowie die Möglichkeit zur Anmeldung auf http://cloud.oracle.com vorliegen. Interessanterweise gehört auch ein sog. „Social Service“ in diese Schicht, mit der Oracle Kunden ihre Anwendungen in Zukunft auf standardisierte Weise durch Social Networking Funktionalität wie z.B. Microblogging erweitern können.Ebenso neu angekündigt wurde ein "Developer Service", welcher z.B. Sourcecode-Verwaltung durch GIT Repositories sowie Wikis und Issue Tracking bereit stellen soll. Die dort mittels JDeveloper, Netbeans oder Eclipse erstellten Applikationen können dann nahtlos innerhalb kürzester Zeit in den Java Service deployed werden. Komplett neu und für einige sicher überraschend ist hingegen der Bereich IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) – Hier geht es um die Bereitstellung von Basis-Infrastrukturkomponenten wie Storage, Rechenleistung (letztlich also Betriebssysteme / VMs) und Messaging / Queueing. Genaue Details oder Preise zu den IaaS Angeboten sind noch nicht bekannt, aber zumindest zu den Storage- und Messaging Services können grundlegende Daten bereits auf http://cloud.oracle.com eingesehen werden Die zweite Neuerung: Kunden können in Zukunft als Alternative zum Betrieb der o.g. „Oracle Cloud“, diese auch komplett hinter ihrer eigenen Firewall aufbauen lassen. Mit anderen Worten: Oracle baut und betreibt bei diesem als „Oracle Private Cloud“ bezeichneten Angebot alle Komponenten selbst – die Daten verlassen aber niemals das Gebäude des Kunden. Letzteres ist gerade bei uns im Datenschutz-sensiblen Deutschland ein wichtiger Aspekt. Da die verwendeten Komponenten in beiden Fällen die gleichen sind, ist auch ein „Umziehen“ oder Erweitern der Private Cloud in die Public Cloud (oder zurück) ohne Änderungen an den Anwendungen möglich. Der Möglichkeit einer "Hybrid Cloud", bei der Teile einer Anwendung hinter der eigenen Firewall, andere Teile aber in der Oracle Cloud laufen, wird damit Realität.

• 50 Billion Served: Java Embedded on Devices

  It doesn't matter if it is 50 billion or 24 billion, just suffice it to stay that there will be MANY connected devices in the year 2020. With just 24 billion devices, they will outnumber humans six to one! So as a developer, you don't want to ignore this opportunity. What if you could use your Java skills and deploy an app to a fraction of these devices (don't be greedy, how about just, say, 118,000 of them)? Fareed Suliman, Java ME Product Manager had lots of good news for Java Developers in his presentation Modernizing the Explosion of Advanced Microcontrollers with Embedded Java at ARM TechCon in Santa Clara, CA last week. "A radical architecture shift is underway in this space, from proprietary to standards-based," he explained.  He pointed out several advantages to using Embedded Java for devices: Java is a proven and open standard. Java provides connectivity, encryption, location, and web services APIs. You don't have to focus on and keep reinventing the plumbing below the JVM. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows you to repeat your app across many devices. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows allows parallel development so you can get your app done more quickly. You already know Java (or you can hire lots of Java talent). Java is a full ecosystem, with Java Embedded plugins for IDEs like Eclipse and NetBeans. Java ME allows for in-field software upgrades. Suliman mentioned two ways developers can start using Java Embedded today:  Java ME Embedded Suite 7.0 Oracle Java Embedded Suite is a new packaged solution from Oracle (including Java DB, GlassFish for Embedded Suite, Jersey Web Services Framework, and Oracle Java SE Embedded 7 platform), created to provide value added services for collecting, managing, and transmitting data to embedded devices such as gateways and concentrators. Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2 Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2 is designed and optimized to meet the unique requirements of small embedded, low power devices such as micro-controllers and other resource-constrained hardware without screens or user interfaces. Developers get instant access to an enterprise-grade environment for a simple, monthly subscription.” Oracle Java Cloud Service instances are created with just a few clicks, so businesses can create a rich application development environment within minutes. • Learning by doing (and programming by trial and error)

  How do you learn a new platform/toolkit while producing working code and keeping your codebase clean? When I know what I can do with the underlying platform and toolkit, I usually do this: I create a new branch (with GIT, in my case) I write a few unit tests (with JUnit, for example) I write my code until it passes my tests So far, so good. The problem is that very often I do not know what I can do with the toolkit because it is brand new to me. I work as a consulant so I cannot have my preferred language/platform/toolkit. I have to cope with whatever the customer uses for the task at hand. Most often, I have to deal (often in a hurry) with a large toolkit that I know very little so I'm forced to "learn by doing" (actually, programming by "trial and error") and this makes me anxious. Please note that, at some point in the learning process, usually I already have: read one or more five-stars books followed one or more web tutorials (writing working code a line at a time) created a couple of small experimental projects with my IDE (IntelliJ IDEA, at the moment. I use Eclipse, Netbeans and others, as well.) Despite all my efforts, at this point usually I can just have a coarse understanding of the platform/toolkit I have to use. I cannot yet grasp each and every detail. This means that each and every new feature that involves some data preparation and some non-trivial algorithm is a pain to implement and requires a lot of trial-and-error. Unfortunately, working by trial-and-error is neither safe nor easy. Actually, this is the phase that makes me most anxious: experimenting with a new toolkit while producing working code and keeping my codebase clean. Usually, at this stage I cannot use the Eclipse Scrapbook because the code I have to write is already too large and complex for this small tool. In the same way, I cannot use any more an indipendent small project for my experiments because I need to try the new code in place. I can just write my code in place and rely on GIT for a safe bail-out. This makes me anxious because this kind of intertwined, half-ripe code can rapidly become incredibly hard to manage. How do you face this phase of the development process? How do you learn-by-doing without making a mess of your codebase? Any tips&tricks, best practice or something like that?

  What is Java? In very short words, Java is a programming language that let you make an application that can be run on different operating systems, no matter we are talking about Windows, Mac OS, Linux or even embedded devices, such as RaspberryPi. When you compile a Java program, instead of getting a binary output as you get on other programming languages, you'll get a Java intermediate code, called Java bytecode. This is interpreted at run time, by a virtual machine that is specifically for the hardware and operating system you are using. What Java do i need? There are 5 major versions of Java: Java SE(Standard Edition) - this is what I'll use on most of my tutorials. Most of the examples will run on Java 6, but for others you'll need Java 7. Java EE (Enterprise Edition) - used for enterprise development Java ME (Micro Edition) - for running Java on mobile and different embedded devices such as PDAs, TV set-top boxes, printers, etc. Java Embedded - for some embedded devices such as Raspberry Pi, where the resources are limited JavaFX - to develop rich content User Interfaces. This is also something that will use a lot. More detailed information can be found on Oracle's website If you just want to run java applications you'll need the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) installed. If you want to program and create new applications, then you'll need the JDK (Java Development Kit).  How to check if Java is already installed? • JavaOne 2013: (Key) Notes of a conference – State of the Java platform and all the roadmaps by Amis

  Last week’s JavaOne conference provided insights in the roadmap of the Java platform as well as in the current state of things in the Java community. The close relationship between Oracle and IBM concerning Java, the (continuing) lack of such a relationship with Google, the support from Microsoft for Java applications on its Azure cloud and the vibrant developer community – with over 200 different Java User Groups in many countries of the world. There were no major surprises or stunning announcements. Java EE 7 (release in June) was celebrated, the progress of Java 8 SE explained as well as the progress on Java Embedded and ME. The availability of NetBeans 7.4 RC1 and JDK 8 Early Adopters release as well as the open sourcing of project Avatar probably were the only real news stories. The convergence of JavaFX and Java SE is almost complete; the upcoming alignment of Java SE Embedded and Java ME is the next big consolidation step that will lead to a unified platform where developers can use the same skills, development tools and APIs on EE, SE, SE Embedded and ME development. This means that anything that runs on ME will run on SE (Embedded) and EE – not necessarily the reverse because not all SE APIs are part of the compact profile or the ME environment. However, the trimming down of the SE libraries and the increased capabilities of devices mean that a pretty rich JVM runs on many devices – such as JavaFX 8 on the Raspberry PI. The major theme of the conference was Internet of Things. A world of things that are smart and connected, devices like sensors, cameras and equipment from cars, fridges and television sets to printers, security gates and kiosks that all run Java and are all capable of sending data over local network connections or directly over the internet. The number of devices that has these capabilities is rapidly growing. This means that the number of places where Java programs can help program the behavior of devices is growing too. It also means that the volume of data generated is expanding and that we have to find ways to harvest that data, possibly do a local pre-processing (filter, aggregate) and channel the data to back end systems. Terms typically used are edge devices (small, simple, publishing data), gateways (receiving data from many devices, collecting and consolidating, pre-processing, sending onwards to back end – typically using real time event processing) and enterprise services – receiving the data-turned-information from the gateways to further consolidate, distribute and act upon. A cheap device like the Raspberry PI is a perfect way to get started as a Java developer with what embedded (device) programming means and how interaction with physical input and output takes place. • Problems with apache svn server (403 Forbidden)

  Iv recently setup a SVN server on my papache webserver. I installed USVN http://www.usvn.fr/ to help manage the repositories from a web interface. When I create a repository and try to import code into it from netbeans i get the following error: org.tigris.subversion.javahl.ClientException: RA layer request failed Server sent unexpected return value (403 Forbidden) in response to PROPFIND request for '/svn/python1' I know i have the username and password correct (and I have tried different users) I have done some research and it seems that it is most likely an Apache svn error. • Ubuntu 12.04 on VMware Player loses network configuration

  I've been having this issue for 2 weeks now with my VMware Player-hosted Ubuntu 12.04. I only use it for my LAMP stack. I've had no issues with it before until about 2 weeks ago when it almost always (once per day at least) loses its network configuration. On boot it shows: Waiting for network configuration... Waiting up to 60 more seconds for network configuration... Booting system without full network configuration... Then when I do ifconfig -a it doesn't show an IP Address and couldn't get online. The only resolutions I've found so far was either to reinstall VMware Tools or use the VMware Player installer and choose Repair. This is frustrating to me because even when the issue was resolved after doing either of the steps I mentioned, the IP Address gets changed. Then I'd have to update the Remote Configuration of my IDE (Netbeans) and my database manager. What could possible cause this? Please help. Thank you. Additional details: I'm using a laptop with Windows 7 and connected to the office WiFi, which is unrestricted as far as I know. Thanks again.

• How to make designer generated .Net application settings portable

  Hello, I've been looking at modifying the source of the Doppler podcast aggregator with the goal of being able to run the program directly from my mp3 player. Doppler stores application settings using a Visual Studio designer generated Settings class, which by default serializes user settings to the user's home directory. I'd like to change this so that all settings would be stored in the same directory as the exe. It seems that this would be possible by creating a custom provider class which inherits the SettingsProvider class. Has anyone created such a provider and would like to share code? Update: I was able to get a custom settings provider nearly working by using this MSDN sample, i.e. with simple inheritance. I was initially confused as Windows Forms designer stopped working until I did this trick suggested at Codeproject: internal sealed partial class Settings { private MySettingsProvider settingsprovider = new MySettingsProvider(); public Settings() { foreach (SettingsProperty property in this.Properties) { property.Provider = settingsprovider; } ... • Is jQuery always the answer?

  I've come across a couple questions, such as this one, and I really have to wonder why "Use jQuery" seems to be the answer when somebody asks how to do something in JavaScript. I understand that jQuery can save you a lot of time, and can help you out a lot, especially when you are doing a lot of fancy JavaScript in your site. However, in instances like this, and in many other instances, it seems like it's just jumping around the problem instead of answering the question. I also feel like this builds too much dependency into libraries. I've seen way too many developers that simply rely too much on libraries, and if they encounter a situation where they didn't have the library, they would be completely unable to function. I feel like there are already enough developers who don't know JavaScript, without just telling everybody to not learn JavaScript, and use jQuery. So, just to reiterate the question. Do you think there's too much of a tendency to use jQuery, for small pieces of JavaScript, when most of the functionality of jQuery isn't being used. Should developers be fluent in the use of bare JavaScript so they don't get too dependent on using libraries? [Additional related conversation topic] Does the existence of jQuery give too much slack to web browser developers who write the JavaScript engines? If we just have workarounds to cover all the inconsistencies in JavaScript, what pressure is there on browser makers to ensure that their JavaScript library works as it should. I feel like this extrapolates the same problem discussed in SO Podcast #36 of "be conservative in what you send, liberal in what you accept". By being so liberal with bad JavaScript engines, and using a common library to work around the flaws, we are promoting their use, and extending the problem.

  Given: 5000 databases (spread out over 5 servers) 1 database per client (so you can infer there are 1000 clients) 2 to 2000 users per client (let's say avg is 100 users per client) Clients (databases) come and go every day (let's assume most remain for at least one year) Let's stay agnostic of language or sql brand, since Lucene (and Solr) have a breadth of support The Question: How would you setup Lucene search so that each client can only search within its database? How would you setup the index(es)? Would you need to add a filter to all search queries? If a client cancelled, how would you delete their (part of the) index? (this may be trivial--not sure yet) Possible Solutions: Make an index for each client (database) Pro: Search is faster (than one-index-for-all method). Indices are relative to the size of the client's data. Con: I'm not sure what this entails, nor do I know if this is beyond Lucene's scope. Have a single, gigantic index with a database_name field. Always include database_name as a filter. Pro: Not sure. Maybe good for tech support or billing dept to search all databases for info. Con: Search is slower (than index-per-client method). Flawed security if query filter removed. For Example: Joel Spolsky said in Podcast #11 that his hosted web app product, FogBugz On-Demand, uses Lucene. He has thousands of on-demand clients. And each client gets their own database. His situation is quite similar to mine. Although, he didn't elaborate on the setup (particularly indices); hence, the need for this question. One last thing: I would also accept an answer that uses Solr (the extension of Lucene). Perhaps it's better suited for this problem. Not sure.

• Apple / Mac OS X - Is there a Package Manager like Linux

  I am a Linux/UNIX user and love the package management that comes with it. For the most part, I like Ubuntu, but just like anything else, it is the minor things that you live with daily that would be nice if they just worked. My main issue is my wacom tablet while it works, every time there is an OS update, I have to rebuild the wacom driver. The other slightly annoying issue is, my ATI video card is not fully supported. When I use the HDMI out, the sound doesn't go through it, and the screen is not entirely used. I would happily get an Apple if it had a similar package management system like Ubuntu, Gentoo, or other Linux distribution. This takes the work out of getting the latest enhancements or fixes. It also takes all the guess work out about what you need to get something to work. I just want to use my computer, not administer it. Aside from Apple applications, if I wanted to install the GIMP on an apple, would it go and fetch ufraw if I wanted support for that and whatever other dependencies GIMP has? If I want Netbeans installed, will it go and get a JDK and maven if I want that? If not, is there something in the works? I know I don't update my applications that frequently, but that is mainly because I'm not aware of the updates. The updates all happen in the background. Walter

• Linux apache developing configuration

  Recenly reinstalled my system, and came to a point where I need apache and php. I've been searching a long time, but I can't figure out how to configure apache the best way for a developer computer. The plan is simple, I want to install apache 2 + mysql server so I can develop some php website. I don't want to install lamp though, just the apache2, php5 and mysql. The problem that I've been looking an answer for is the permissions on the /var/www/ folder. I've tried making it my folder using the chown command, followed by a chmod -R 755 /var/www. Most things work then, but fwrite for example won't work, because I need to give write permissions to everyone, unless I change my global umask to 000 I'm not sure what I can do. In short: I want to install apache2, php5, mysql-server without using lamp, but configured in a way so I can open up netbeans, start a project with root in /var/www/, and run every single function without permission faults. Does anyone have experiences or workarounds to this? Extra: OS: Ubuntu 10.04 ARCH: x86_64

• Installing xampp on system that already have mysql

  I'm rather new to PHP and xampp. I have a computer that has installed MySQL server and MySQL workbench as I was working with Java and NetBeans. Now I want to use my computer for developing PHP and other web stuff too. I installed xampp successfully. But when I'm trying to access phpMyAdmin, it gives me an error saying mysql server rejected its connection Actually I tried stopping my current MySQL service and installing it again. However xampp have a its own mysql server in its installation path too. I tried configuring config.inc.php to use my existing installation of MySQL which is on a separate path. But I failed. Can anyone please instruct me how to configure this xampp to use my existing MySQL server to do everything and ignore the installed one with itself? I don't want two MySQL services to run on my system and clash in future. I'll be glad if anyone can explain to me what is best to use when you're developing Java, PHP, C and all the stuff on the same machine. P.S.: I have been given a password for my existing MySQL sever (user = root) as we do it usually when installing MySQL alone.
