• What's going to replace HTML & CSS & JS?

  HTML and CSS are showing their age. SASS generates CSS (because CSS isn't clean enough). Graphic Designers don't work in HTML, they work in graphics tools then have to translate it to HTML/CSS. JavaScript has to have abstractions like jQuery, and CSS has a bunch of hacks to even start approaching consistent predictable user experience. It feels like people are doing some wonderful things despite the technologies, not because of them. Surely there is a better way?!? Something more closely aligned with the task at hand.. of providing a fluid intuitive (consistent) user experience to let users achieve their goals. Thoughts?

• Sudoku solver evaluation function

  Hi, So I'm trying to write a simple genetic algorithm for solving a sudoku (not the most efficient way, I know, but it's just to practice evolutionary algorithms). I'm having some problems coming up with an efficient evaluation function to test if the puzzle is solved or not and how many errors there are. My first instinct would be to check if each row and column of the matrix (doing it in octave, which is similar to matlab) have unique elements by ordering them, checking for duplicates and then putting them back the way they were, which seems long winded. Any thoughts? Sorry if this has been asked before...

• Winforms application hangs when switching to another app

  Hi, I believe I have a potential threading issue. This started when I put the threading code. Could I have some rogue threads out there? what is the best way to zero in a threading problem? The issue can't be recreated on my machine...I know I must be missing something on how to dispose of a backgroundworker properly. Any thoughts are appreciated, Thanks, Jose

• Zend Framework: Flash Messenger, add a message from the model

  Any idea on how best to add a message to flash messenger from the model? As FlashMessenger is an action helper, this seems not to be possible, so the obvious solution is to create an internal message object in the model, and return that to the controller from where you can use addMessage(). But if you want to return something else as well, this falls down. Another idea is an additional session namespace for these internal messages, which is then merged in with the Flash Messenger namespace messages at output time? Anyone have any thoughts or experience on this? Cheers.

• Firefox Extension needs to get cookie from PHP redirected external page.

  I am writing a firefox extension that interacts with a JSON server interface. I receive a url to the server which then redirects to the client site that provides the cookie. I need to be able to set this cookie in the users browser without physically loading it in the browser. Is this possible through an AJAX call? I tried using a hidden iframe, however firefox does not seem to like a php redirect in the iframe. My current solution is to load the site in a second tab that never gains focus and then auto close it when the cookie is set. This is very messy and would prefer something more streamlines. Any thoughts?

• Wordpress, PHP, URL Encoding Issue

  Wordpress provides a function called "the_permalink()" that returns, you guessed it!, the permalink to a given post while in a loop of posts.   I want to specify a custom icon for a makrer. Sadly, the icon that I chose is not displayed. • Continous Build Integration with SourceSafe and Batch Files

  I want to create a continuous build integration system for .NET using just Windows batch files and Visual Source Safe. I've come up with the following batch file so far - set ssdir=\\xxxx\vss cd d:\mydir "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual SourceSafe\ss.exe" diff "$/sourcedir" -R -Q > diffout.txt This will spit out a file containg lines like "SourceSafe files different from local files" when a change has been made. My challenge is to figure out if those lines are in the file, then do a get and kick off MSBuild if they are. I'd then schedule the batch file to run every 10 minutes or so. Anyone got any thoughts on how to do that? Or any other ways of doing continuous build integration without downloading a complicated build automation system? Update: Happy to use cscript or powershell too, though not really familiar with those environments. My main aim is to avoid installing 3rd party software

• Private VCS hosts for school projects?

  I want to use version control for a partner project for school, but these days it seems like there are no private, free VCS hosts that I could use. I would prefer to use git if possible, but I wouldn't mind SVN. Alternatively, if there aren't any, shouldn't there be some way for me to use git without a central repository? I don't know enough about git, but I assume that is the point of a DVCS, no? I've considered scp'ing a clone of the repository to my school unix account and then giving my partner access to that, but it seems like it would be a bit of a pain. What are your thoughts/suggestions? Edit: I do know of one site called xp-dev, but I'm not sure how much I trust it. But I could use that and use git-svn on my side, since my partner has actually only ever used svn. But still wondering if there are any alternatives.

  Hi, does anyone have any thoughts on what would be considered good technicaly interviews for new php programmers. Im not meaning the little questions that are intended to know language specific intricacies but more on larger interview questions that potential employees may take an hour or 2 to solve in their own time and then come back with. Specifically im looking at PHP and object orientated but are there any ideas on suitable problems that a php programmer should be able to solve within a couple of hours? I am thinking that I want to have demonstrated object orientated techniques and also unit testing capabilities but as for that it can be anything.

• Python: Why is IDLE so slow?

  Hi, IDLE is my favorite Python editor. It offers very nice and intuitive Python shell which is extremely useful for unit-testing and debugging, and a neat debugger. However, code executed under IDLE is insanely slow. By insanely I mean 3 orders of magnitude slow: bash time echo "for i in range(10000): print 'x'," | python Takes 0.052s, IDLE import datetime start=datetime.datetime.now() for i in range(10000): print 'x', end=datetime.datetime.now() print end-start Takes: >>> 0:01:44.853951 Which is roughly 2,000 times slower.   Is there any ability to mock methods that are provided with RIA Services? I would like to test my Silverlight App without communication to the server side... I see a following approach: create a separate interface; add it to "base classes" for my RiaService; define each autogenerated RIA-method in this interface; insert dependency so that my "functionality" will depend not from the RiaService, but from the interface that is implemented with RiaService. But for this case I see a problem: how to keep my interface in the auto-generated files? ANy thoughts are welcome.

  I am currently a single BI developer over a corporate datawarehouse and cube. I use SQL Server 2008, SSAS, and SSIS as my basic toolkit. I use Visual Studio +BIDS and TFS for my IDE and source control. I am about to take on multiple projects with an offshore vendor and I am worried about managing change. My major concern is manging merges and changes between me and the offshore team. Merging and managing changes to SQL & XML for just one person is bad enough but with multiple developers it seems like a nightmare. Any thoughts on how best to structure development knowing that sometimes there is no way to avoid multiple individuals making changes to the same file?

• how to display a dialog if user can't download file

  hi. dealing with php/html/javascript. i'm trying to figure out a good/best approach to allowing a user to download a file. i can have the traditional href link, that interfaces with the back end php app to download the file. however, i want to have the app display some sort of dialog/alert if the user isn't able (basedon acl/permissions) to download the file... does this have to ba an ajax thing, as i don't want to do a page refresh... thoughts/comments/pointers to code samples are appreciated. thanks. -tom

• Python (windows) will open files from command line, but not from a script launched from eclipse

  I'm pretty new to writing python for windows (linux is no problem), and am having problems getting python to recognize files when running scripts, though it behaves fine in the command line What am I doing wrong here? def verifyFile(x): # return os.path.isfile(x) This will return true (with a valid file, of course) when called from the python command line, but when I run the script from eclipse, or launch it from windows, it ALWAYS returns false. Any thoughts on why this is? I've tried passing pathnames like this: D:\Documents and Settings\BDE\Desktop\cdburn.jpg and like this: D:/Documents and Settings/BDE/Desktop/cdburn.jpg I've changed sys,argv[0] to '' I've tried this: def verifyFile(x): # try: f = open(x, 'r') f.close() return True except: return False and am getting no love! • hidden row causing issue with tablesorter zebra striping

  Sorry if this has already been solved elsewhere but my searches have been able to turn up nothing and my attempts at solving the issue myself have made even less progress. :P Put quite simply I have a table that is using the jquery tablesorter and it's zebra widget. In this table there is a hidden column. I've so far been able to make it so that when a tr contains specific text (I was aiming for * but was seemingly unable to get \* to work for whatever reason...and I suspect my selector is perhaps not specific enough) the containing row is set not to display by ".hide()". The problem I am having though is when the row is hidden, tablesorter does exactly what it should do and stripes all the rows their specific colours based on their odd and even values. Of course .remove doesn't do the trick either as the table still sees some funny striping. Any thoughts on how to make it so that when a row is hidden, the striping compensates?

  Servus, Do you know of any frameworks, APIS, languages, or other resources that are well suited for drawing topology maps that allow a user to interact with objects on the map? I am not constrained by language choice and the program can be web-based, or stand-alone. I thought I would check before rolling my own. My goal is not to draw cartographic maps, but more like this picture: http://www.fineconnection.com/files/images/GraphicalNM.PNG, or if you are familiar with Edward Tufte's books, the data-visualization mechanisms he describes such as a map of a metro or subway. Also, if you have had any experience rendering these types of user interfaces or usage of underlying datastructures, I would be grateful to hear any thoughts you have on the subject, advice, any "gotchas." • missing event when using modules with requirejs

  I had javascript code in a single JS file that was working fine (using XHR/AJAX). When I split it up into separate modules in a requirejs application, I do not seem to get a handle on the event object & it shows up as undefined (testing in firefox 29.0.1). • Ruby email_veracity_checker getting Recipient OK for invalid emails

  I was testing out email_veracity_checker from rails console and found that when I tested a google apps domain (w/ catchall), yahoo and another company domain, the smtp server always returned 250 recipient ok for invalid emails (wellformed, but bogus). It seems that these servers are always returning OK perhaps to prevent email harvesting. But it does seem to raise the question 'why even validate up-front', is this approach even valid in today's environment? Note: gmail did return 550 email account doesn't exist for invalid. related to How check if an email exist without send in Ruby? Use of email_veracity_checker send-in-ruby-use-of-email-veracity-checker I appreciate your thoughts.

  I'm working on a project where I need to create a WSRP portlet webservice with ASP.net. My first question is what exactly is WSRP, and are there any good examples of it available? So far I have determined that it is a SOAP xml standard that defines how to create a portlet that can be embedded in an other portal. Is that correct? Also I was planning on using MVC to do this. Is this a good idea? Any thoughts on WSRP are welcome. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what it is and how to create it.

• IE HTTPS Ajax request image not showing up

  Hi: In IE (7 or 8) and HTTPS mode, following RESPONSE is delivered for an AJAX request. My issue is the img was NOT requested at all by IE (figured out using Fiddler), broken img is shown instead. It all works perfectly in HTTP mode in IE and other browsers no problem rendering in both mode (please don't tell me not to use IE). Any thoughts/work-arounds/suggestions? • C# Application crashes with Buffer Overrun in deployed (.exe) version, but not in Visual Studio

  Hi, I have a c# Windows Forms application that runs perfectly from within Visual Studio, but crashes when its deployed and run from the .exe. It crashes with a Buffer Overrun error...and its pretty clear that this error is not being thrown from within my code. Instead, windows must be detecting some sort of buffer overrun and shutting down the application from the outside. I don't think there's one specific line of code that is causing it..it simply happens intermittently. Does anybody have any thoughts on what the possible causes of a Buffer Overrun error might be, and why it would only occur in the deployed application and not when run from with Visual Studio?
