• Secure external connection to SQL Server (from third party software)

  I have a SQL Express 2008 R2 server running on a server in an internal lan network. A few databases are used by some third party software to store data. A SQL-Server user is used by this application to connect to the database. Now I need to access this database using a local installation of the software from an external pc. In this particular case a VPN connection is not the solution I am looking for. I have access to an external linux server, so I tried ssh tunneling from the windows server to the linux server and use the external pc to tunnel it back from the linux server to the client, but this is working very very slow. What are my other options to allow this external connection in a safe way?

• Work firewall blocking Gmail IMAP port

  My work has a very over protective firewall. We use Google Apps for our email and so can access the web interface just fine. I use my laptop at work however (MacBook connected via WiFi through my AirPort Express), and prefer to use Sparrow to check my email. The problem is that our firewall blocks whatever port Gmail's IMAP server uses. I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to work around this. I'm guessing I'll need to use an SSH tunnel or VPN, but I'm looking for specific instructions. I'd prefer to only route the IMAP stuff around the firewall as opposed to using a VPN full time. I have two computers at home (one PC, one Mac Mini) that are always on and could probably act as a server if needed.

• Hard drive failure during a move

  So, odd situation here... I shipped a computer via UPS. The computer was well protected, wrapped in multiple layers of padding and tightly packed to minimize any chance of damage. The package arrived in great condition, no damage to the box at all - it looks like it was handled with utmost care. (And given it was shipped 2nd day express and cost $200 to ship, it had better have been) However, upon unpacking it and turning it on... suddenly the computer is telling us there is no boot device. I've checked everything I can think of and everything points to complete and utter hard drive failure. So - what on earth could cause hard drive failure during shipping?

• Hooking up a laptop to an HDTV via VGA

  I have a 2-3 year old laptop running XBMC, and I have an HDTV that I'd like to connect it to. The only output that the laptop has is VGA (and S-Video - I don't know if the TV supports it) . The TV doesn't support VGA input, but takes HDMI. -- Is it worth buying a VGA-to-HDMI converter? As in this: -- Are there any other, cheaper options available? There's a lot of information around the WWW, but a lot of it's outdated and it's hard to digest everything. I know of at least one other option, and that's a USB to HDMI connection, but I don't even know what to look for or where to get started on that one. I also suspect it might be a little more complicated. If it's cheaper then it could be worth it. EDIT More Details: Intel integrated graphics card (Intel 945 Express Chipset Family) The TV supports up to 1080p resolution

• Mac OS X: pushing all traffic through a VMWare VM [closed]

  I want to set up an Astaro (Sophos) UTM in a Virtual Machine. The Setup should be at the end the following: Cable Modem (one IP adress) | [Ethernet] Sophos UTM (running as VM [VMWare Fusion 5] on the MacMini) | [WIFI] Airport Express v2 (for sharing Local Network to wireless and wired clients) 1)| [WIFI] 2)| [Ethernet over Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter]* Clients MacMini (Local File Server) *To have the Mini also protected behind the UTM So the setup process for the UTM works fine, but then the problems start: I just have one external IP (from my cable modem provider)== So if I put the VM in briged mode my Internet connection drops, because the MacMini also has its IP adress. If I put the VM to NAT mode the Mini itself is not protected by the UTM So: is there a way to hide the en0 interface(Ethernet) and the en1 interface (Wifi) from the MacMini, so that they not even appear in System Preferences Network section but are available to the VM? That way the Mini must connect to the en2 interface (Thunderbolt adapter) to make any Internet/LAN connection and I just use the given single IP from the Cable Modem. Thaks for any suggestions...   I'm having a hard time configuring Reporting services on one of our servers. I'm not uninitiated in the domain of IIS7 but I cannot get rid of the login prompt when I'm surfing to the Reporting services website. What I did: I made a windows and SQL user with the same name: Then I choose Anonymous authentication in II7 and filled in the credentials of the specific R.S. user http://img32.imageshack.us/i/iis7auth.jpg/ I choose 'Local Service' as the service account in the R.S. configuration mgr http://img88.imageshack.us/i/rsconfigmgr.jpg/ The first problem is that there's always a pop-up when surfing to the website The second is that when I'm able to log in I get the message that the user doesn't have the appropriate permissions. • not able to mount media to ESX 4.0

  Hi, I have ESX 4.0 running on NEC Express 5800 R-120a model. I have 2 VMs running windows XP. I am not able to mount any media to it. When I try connecting the local media to the VM, the error message comes mentioning "a connection to the host could not be established.: I have checked and there is no network issue. ESX is accessible fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Besides, I have opened almost all the ports in the firewall just to make sure there is no port conflict.

• Advise about performance for local or remote SQL Server?

  I currently have my web server and SQL Express / MySQL server on the same server. It is on a VPS. I have been having problems with my hosting so I am thinking of separating the web and db server into 2 VPS servers. Does anyone recommend this? I am worried that changing my setup from a local DB server to a remote one will degrade performance heavily. They will not be on the same network, but will reference each other via an IP address. Anything I should be aware of?

  I have a questionnaire that users complete. It is in Excel. After users complete the questionnaire I would like to be able to generate a Word document that contains their answers. • Computer wont POST after power outage

  I had just turned my computer on and windows was loading when the power in my neighborhood went out. Normally, when I turn my computer on, the video card fan spins up, then slows down, POST and windows boots. Now, after the blackout, the video card fan spins fast and wont stop. Nothing is displayed on the monitor. The monitor does not detect that the video card is sending it signals, it just stays on standby. No POST or beep codes. This is what I have tried so far: My motherboard has 2 PCI express slots and I tried plugging the video card into both of them but that didn't fix anything. I have replaced the power supply, that didn't fix anything. I cleared the CMOS, that didn't fix anything. Does anyone have any idea of what could be wrong? Thanks!

  I've upgraded recently from Windows Vista to Windows 8. When I try to rate my computer, it accesses DirectX 9 performance, then processes to DirectX 10 tests: And it gets stuck at this point. In 5–10 minutes, it shows error message: The video card is rather old: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family. I'm pretty sure it does not support DirectX 10. Why does Windows assess it with DirectX 10? And how can I make it skip DirectX 10 tests and get the system rating? The driver was installed automatically by Windows 8 from Windows Update.   I am trying to install MS SQL Database 2005 on Windows XP Home SP3. It fails giving no reason ("Database failed to install"), then exits. I had already installed MS SQL Database Express Edition 2008 during 2005 setup. But when I removed 2008 one and tried to install 2005 afterwards it still failed with same error. The error happens when I am trying to install Dragon Age Toolset or Visual 2008 Pro edition. I do not known which else informations may be valuable as I never before encountered problems with installing MS database

• Why can't I grant exec on dbms_lock.sleep() OR create a procedure using it (but I can run it fine on its own)

  I am trying to write a small bit of PL/SQL that has a non-CPU burning sleep in it. The following works in sqldeveloper begin dbms_lock.sleep(5); end; BUT (as the same user), I can't do the following: create or replace procedure sleep(seconds in number) is begin dbms_lock.sleep(seconds); end; without the error "identifer "DBMS_LOCK" must be declared... Funny as I could run it without a procedure. Just as strange, when I log in as a DBA, I can run the command grant exec on dbms_lock to public; and I get ERROR at line 1: ORA-00990: missing or invalid privilege This is oracle version "Oracle Database 11g Express Edition Release 11.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production"

• Are mobo raid controllers based on Intel ICH10R southbridge still considered software Raid?

  So do you still need specific software/drivers (intel matrix?) installed to manage the raid controller, setup the array. If the raid chipset is on-board the motherboard and it uses the CPU, and say I am using a Core 2 Quad Q9550, would a hardware based card still out perform the motherboard chipset? This is for a home workstation and I could spend $300 on a areca ARC-1210 PCI-Express x8 SATA II but I want to be able to justify the money for the raid card. My motherboard is a GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P UPDATE: I was going to RAID5 using 4 500 GB drives, and I was going to buy a controller card but this article got me thinking hmmm....Toms-Southbridge Battle

• Remote connection to SQL server doesn't use the instance name

  I have a web server with SQL express 2008 installed. I was trying to connect to this from my local machine using SSMS. After enabling TCP/IP in SQL configuration manager, starting SQL browser service and opening up the firewall I still couldn't connect using xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\sqlexpress as the server name. Finally out of frustration I tried to connect taking off the sqlexpress instance name to just xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and it worked! I'm really at a loss here as to why this works. What would happen if I installed more instances of SQL?

• Windows Updates - Does Not Install, how can I remove it

  Everytime I shutdown my Windows XP, it comes up with the following screen which says Turn Off with Installing Updates (Of course, it also gives me an option as follows, "Click here to turn off without installing updates.") When I do a normal shutdown asking it to "Install Updates and Turn It Off", it doesn't actually install the updates. Each subsequent time I try to shut down the PC, it still prompts me to "Turn Off with Installing Updates". I managed to find out that the install was this: Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) update 1 of 1 .... When I click on the Installing Updates icon (the yellow icon, that appears on the task bar near the clock), and install it, it tries to install but fails: Why is this install alone failing? Secondly, if it's not possible to ascertain why the installation is failing, can I at least ensure that it's removed from the list of possible installs so that each time it does not ask me to install it?

• Will Dolphin emulator run (smoothly) on this machine?

  Product Specs: Intel® NM10 Express chipset /w Intel® Atom® D525 (dual-core, 1.8 GHz) I think the most I can put in there for RAM is 4 GB. (They don't make 8 GB SODIMM do they?) The Dolphin site is pretty vague about requirements: Windows XP or higher, or Linux, or MacOSX Intel Fast CPU with SSE2. GPU with Pixel Shader 2.0 or greater. Some integrated graphics chips work but it depends on the model (and only with DirectX 9). I'm trying to make a light-weight quiet little machine for streaming video and playing eumulators, and I'm trying to figure out the minimum requirements I will need to do what I want. I know I'm not supposed to ask for product recommendations here, so if you could just advise the minimum requirements in terms of CPU, graphics card, and RAM, that'd be helpful.

• Wake on Lan/Wan won't work after some time has passsed

  I have the following set up: Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H Wake On Lan Enabled Asus N66U Port Forwarding Static IP assigned to my computer Windows 7 Advanced Power Management - PCI Express - Off Intel 82579V - All options under Power Management checked I'm trying to set this up for Wake on Wan capabilities. If I shut down my computer and immediately try to Wake on Wan (and Lan) it works and starts up. While the computer is on, I've used a few WOL specific packet sniffers and the packet comes through on the correct port. After any period of time over a few minutes, waking on Wan or Lan won't work. The back "activity" light is blinking on my ethernet port on my computer, as well as on the router, so I would assume the network card is on and able to receive a signal. Any ideas? Suggestions? What can I do to troubleshoot the problem?

  To continue with this question: Should be Vmware vCenter server high available? According to the response there even if vCenter is down HA will continue to work. So, if my vCenter is a VM, using the express sql edition in the same VM, and that VM is hosted in the same cluster it manages (and the cluster is setup for HA): Am I correct to assume that if the host that hosts the vCenter goes down HA will vmotion the vCenter VM to another host and it will continue to function? BTW: my environment is small, two ESXi 5.0 hosts, with about 50 VMs, using iSCSI shared storaged for everything.
