• Lynx "Alert!: Unable to connect to remote host."

  I'm pretty new to Ubuntu server. I'm running Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS Release: 12.04 I have installed Lynx via sudo apt-get install lynx everything installed fine but when I try to connect to a website it just seems to time out. When I run lynx google.com it goes to a blank screen with a blue line at the bottom. There is yellow text on the line which says "Making HTTP connection to google.com" but it just sits there. Eventually after 5 - 6 minutes it just goes back to the normal terminal window If I run the below on its own lynx I get the same blue line with the same text "Making HTTP connection to google.com" but after 30 seconds or so it briefly turns to a red line with "alert!: lynx unable to connect to remote host" written on it. I have installed lynx locally and it works fine. Does anyone have any ideas?

I’ve also had a quick look (March 12th 2010) to see what new resources are out there on EF4. They appear a little thin on the ground – but there are some gems. There is now a commercial profiler for Entity Framework.  I am yet to try it – but I listened to a .NET rocks podcast which made it sound great. It is “hidden” in a session on DSLs in Boo –> Oren Eini on creating DSLs in Boo. This is a much richer experience than you would get from SQL Profiler – matching the SQL to the .NET code. And finally a momentous #fail to … drum roll… the Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 Training Kit Feb release. This just contains one ppt on EF4 – and it is not even a good one. Real shame. P.S. • .NET Reflector 7 Released

  This new version fixes a number of bugs and adds support for more high level C# features such as iterator blocks. A new tabbed browsing model was added and Jason Haley's PowerCommands add-in was included as an exploratory step for future versions. • SO-overflow induced passivity - how to cope?

  After not really working on my pet project for a while, I discovered Stackoverflow and upon perusing it more intensely I was quite amazed. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so when I found eye-openers here highlighting many of the mistakes I made, I first wanted to fix everything. However, it's a pet project for a reason: I'm self-taught and I'm studying psychology, so programming skills can never become priority one (though it often helps, even in this field). Issues that stuck out were numerous security issues (e.g. CSRF-prevention and bcrypt eluded me) not object-oriented (at least the PHP part, the JS-part mostly is) no PHP framework used, so many of my DIY takes on commonly-tackled components (auth, ...) are either bad or inefficient really poor MySQL usage (no prepared statements, mysql extension, heard about setting proper indices two days ago) using mootools even though JQuery seems to be fashionable, so there's more probably always going to be better integration with services I'd like to use (like google visualization) So, my SO-induced frenzy turned into passivity. I can't do it all (soon) in the rather small amount of spare time I can spend on working on my project. I can leave some of the issues be in good conscience (speed stuff: an unfinished & unpublished project will never become popular, right?). No clear conscience without good security though and if I don't use a framework for auth and other complex stuff I'll regret having to do it myself. One obvious answer would probably be going open-source, but I think the project would need to become more impressive before others would commit to it. I can't afford to employ someone either. I do think the project deserves being worked on, though. How should I tackle it anyway? What's the best practice for little-practice people?

• How Do I Print Photos?

  Other than for Windows in Ubuntu there are no fancy utilities provided from printer manufacturers to print photos. I am aware of Gnome Photo Printer and of Photoprint, the first being easy to handle, the latter having more options. However I wonder if there are any other or maybe even better alternatives (including plugins) to perform the following tasks: Print photos in the best photo-resolution the driver offers Adjust paper size for standard values of photo papers Choose paper tray if the printer has more than one Print out multiple photos on one page including mixed sizes (grids) Multiple prints with same settings Borderless printing if the printer is capable of this Any additional options like pre-processing for color correction or noise reduction would be nice to have but are not so essential. Update According to this spec it seems not to so easy to accomplish the simple task of printing photos. Indeed all applications I have gone through have major drawbacks that make printing photos almost impossible. Below I will list what put me off using them for photo printing: Gnome Photo Printer: no thumbnails, no grids Photoprint: does not keep settings, GUI broken, no standard photo size, no thumbs Eye Of Gnome: no multiple pages, no grids Gimp + Images Grid Layout: far too many steps to finally find that prints are always different to their previews. F-Spot: no grids Picasa 3: no grids, very few fixed paper sizes, 300 dpi only flPhoto: strange GUI, no thumbs, no printer settings, did not print at all Windows: Ooops - everything works fine! But I want Ubuntu to do this! After half a pack of ink cartridges and half a pack of photo paper cards I am getting tired of testing. At least Gimp and Picasa looked promising but both don't keep their promise when it comes to printing. I'd already be happy to quickly print a few photos with EOG if bug #80220 was fixed - but it's still on "wishlist".

• Is it possible to use RubyGnome2's/QtRuby's HTML renderers to make UI for a Ruby script?

  I'd like to make a graphical user interface for my script, instead of running it from the console. I'm aware there's a wealth of UI libraries for Ruby, but I'm quite familiar with HTML and CSS and I'd like to use them for building an interface. So the question is: Is it possible to use a HTML rendering library to make such an UI? From what I understand, it's relatively easy to put in a HTML rendered view of something, but is it possible to communicate back with the script? Like when I push that big red button, it actually tells the script to act on it? Obviously it's possible if the script run on the server side, but I'd like to run it as a desktop application.

• I can't open Ubuntu Software Center

  I downloaded google chrome that was made for my computer from https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb. For some reason after I installed I can't open. Also in the corner where the time and other things are there's this red circle with a white dash in the middle of it. It says "An error occured, please run package manager from the right click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: 'Unknown Error:''(E:The package google-chrome-stable needs to be reinstalled,but I can't find an archive for it.)' This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies.

• Finding the contact point with SAT

  The Separating Axis Theorem (SAT) makes it simple to determine the Minimum Translation Vector, i.e., the shortest vector that can separate two colliding objects. However, what I need is the vector that separates the objects along the vector that the penetrating object is moving (i.e. the contact point). I drew a picture to help clarify. There is one box, moving from the before to the after position. In its after position, it intersects the grey polygon. SAT can easily return the MTV, which is the red vector. I am looking to calculate the blue vector. My current solution performs a binary search between the before and after positions until the length of the blue vector is known to a certain threshold. It works but it's a very expensive calculation since the collision between shapes needs to be recalculated every loop. Is there a simpler and/or more efficient way to find the contact point vector?

• How do I set a static DNS nameserver address on Ubuntu Server?

  I am trying statically to set DNS server addresses in my Ubuntu server running as virtual machine. I followed all recommendations on official Ubuntu support pages but I simply cannot get rid of my ISP's DNS servers set by DHCP. I assigned br0 interface on my host machine static IP address and eth0 on VM to use Google DNS and my own local DNS running on the second vm by setting it in /etc/network/interfaces. Tried to fiddle with head base and tail files in /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/ and tried to shuffle interface-order in /etc/resolvconf/interface-order but when I restarted network service I got the ISP's DNS addresses back every time. Is there a way that I can disable resolvconf and set up my resolv.conf file manually as I always did on Red Hat? Or at can you tell me which hook script keeps putting ISP DNSs in resolv.conf? My ISP don't allow me to change DHCP settings on my router so I cannot do it that way. Why is such a simple thing such as setting DNS servers got so complicated???

• Is a Model Driven Architecture in Language Oriented Programming (MPS) feasible at this time

  As a side project I am developing some sort of DSL where I describe a data model, and generate desired code files from it. I believe this is called Model Driven Architecture. My partial existing implementation uses C#, CodeDOM, XML and XSLT to do this manually. I discovered there already exist better environments to do this in. The one which fascinated me the most is called MPS, which follows the Language Oriented Programming paradigm. This article, written by a cofounder of JetBrains was a real eye opener for me. I truly believe LOP has a very good chance of becoming the next big programming paradigm once it has broader support. From my short experience with MPS, I noticed it is still mainly Java-oriented. My question is, how feasible is it to generate code files for other (multiple) languages instead of just Java. I don't need full language support from the start, so preferably, I need to be able to implement a language in a agile way. E.g. first support only one type, add access modifiers, ... Perhaps some other (free) environment already provides this out of the box. P.S.: I find it important to have a lot of control over the naming conventions and such of the generated code. This is one of the reasons why I started my own implementation.

• The biggest ADF conference "down under"

  While Oracle Open World is the place to be for ADF presentations, for Aussies living in Perth, San Francisco is a tad far away (believe me from experience, the 23hrs flight from PER-SYD-SFO is tedious).  That's why I'm very excited to see that the Australian Oracle User Group at this year's Perth conference is running its largest set of ADF presentation to date: 5! Okay, it doesn't compare to the 60 ADF sessions at OOW, but it's a small conference of around 300 people that runs for 2 days with 54 sessions total, not 40000 people that runs for 5 days with 1900+ sessions, so I think that's a good effort for a conference that's at the end of the earth! • VMWare Kernel Modules will not compile or update on Ubuntu 12.04

  Kernel Module Update was required when opening VMWare client (vmplayer) then following error occurs. Any idea would be appreciated. Unable to start services. See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-NNN.log for details (Note: NNN looks like random numbers) On GUI that show progress of updating, "Virtual Netowork Device" show red flag appears. • What can I do about rsync of large files killing my laptop's wifi connection

  When I run a rsync to backup my home folder over the network like so: rsync -avhz --progress --delete /home/dbdean/ [email protected]:/home/backups/david/ I seem to have problems with my quite large .VirtualBox/HardDisks/Windows XP.vdi file. Occasionally the wifi will silently fail (the transfer stops, and any other network access is broken). If I reconnect the wifi to my network before the transfer times out, it happily keeps going (and other network access is back), but I can't just leave it unattended most of the time, as I have to keep an eye on it. I'm guessing this is probably a bug in the wireless card related to a particularly high sustained volume of network usage, but I'm not really sure where to start with diagnosing this problem so that I can provide a good bug report. Or it could be something else, I guess. Any help would be appreciated. My network card is an Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285, as lspci -k shows: 43:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. • Algorithm to reduce a bitmap mask to a list of rectangles?

  Before I go spend an afternoon writing this myself, I thought I'd ask if there was an implementation already available --even just as a reference. The first image is an example of a bitmap mask that I would like to turn into a list of rectangles. A bad algorithm would return every set pixel as a 1x1 rectangle. A good algorithm would look like the second image, where it returns the coordinates of the orange and red rectangles. The fact that the rectangles overlap don't matter, just that there are only two returned. To summarize, the ideal result would be these two rectangles (x, y, w, h): [ { 3, 1, 2, 6 }, { 1, 3, 6, 2 } ]

• Conditional formatting of duplicate values in Excel

  One of the infrequent pleasures of being a data geek like me is that one does occasionally stumble across little-known yet incredibly useful features in a tool that you use day-in, day-out. Today this happened to me and the feature is Excel’s ability to highlight dupicate rows in a worksheet. Check this out: Notice that I have got some data in my worksheet that contains duplicated values and simply by selecting Conditional Formatting->Highlight Cells Rules->Duplicate Values… Excel will highlight (shown here in red) which rows are duplicated. It seem such a simple thing but when you’re working on a data integration project and the data that is being sent is of, well, let’s say dubious quality features like this are worth their weight in gold. I tweeted about this and it happened to catch a few people’s attention so I figured it might be worth blogging too. Note that I am using Excel 2013 but I happen to know that the feature exists in Excel 2010 and possibly in earlier versions too. Have a great weekend! @Jamiet

• Box2D Platform body not moving player body along with it

  I am creating a game using Box2D (Javascript implementation) - and I added the ability to have a static platform, that is moved along an axis as a function of a sine. My problem is when the player lands on the platform, as the platform moves along the X axis - the player is not moved along with it, as you visually would expect. The player can land on the object, and if it hits the side of the object, it does colide with it and is pushed. • Removed Xserver driver. ubuntu doesnt start. what should i Do?

  im new on ubuntu , i intalled it ( dual booted with windows 7) i was customizing it, but when i tried to run compiz it said that missing glx or something like that in the screen, i realized that the driver that i was not using wasnt the gefroce on so i went to nvidia downloaded the correct version for my graphic ( geforce gtm 525m) when y run the .run file it told me that i was using xserver and that i cant install this driver with the xserver installed. i search for information of how to remove or disable xserver i found one. in this web site --http://www.ubuntugeek.com/ubuntu-tiphow-to-removeinstall-and-reconfigure-xorg-without-reinstalling-ubuntu.html when i run the command , after that i tried to instal the geforce on, doesnt work so i remember windows that you must reboot after a driver unintallation or intallation so i reboot, them ubuntu doesnto load, it show the ubuntu whit the five dots like or 1-2 sec and them i get a black screen ( not the red-black of ubutntu ) so why i should do. i dont want to re install i dont have a cd and my usb is a little damaged so please if you could help me

• Set up development site on another server/host

  I'm developing a site for a client. They've got a site now that's hosted at hosting.com. I'm going to move them to my VM hosting solution at edge web but I want to run some tests and have the client approve the site before changing the name servers to the new site/hosting location. How do I make this happen? I'm running a red hat/Apache on linux for the edge web hosting. I don't have control of the domain name (i.e. the client controls that right now). Edgeweb has set up a dns zone for the domain name so that when the time comes to switch we're ready to go. I'm a web developer and I understand the technologies that make a user experience 'work' but I'm unfamiliar with the server jargon and all that so, please be patient. Thanks in advance.

  Need an excuse to log a few more hours playing Call of Duty or Medal of Honor? Scientists demonstrated improved vision in test subjects after daily doses of first-person shooter games. Scientists at McMaster University took subjects who, as the result of surgery correcting congenital cataracts, had less than 20/20 vision. Subjects played Medal of Honor for a total of 40 hours over the course of 4 weeks before having their vision retested. The results? The CBC reports: The participants found improvements in detail, perception of motion and in low contrast settings.   Yes, its been a while, Im sorry, mumble, mumble ... no excuses. Well other than its been, as my son would say 'hecka busy.' On a brighter note I see Kan has been posting some cool stuff in my absence, long may he continue! I received a question today asking about using a wildcard in a template, something like: <?if:INVOICE = 'MLP*'?> where * is the wildcard Well that particular try does not work but you can do it without building your own wildcard function. XSL, the underpinning language of the RTF templates, has some useful string functions - you can find them listed here. I used the starts-with function to achieve a simple wildcard scenario but the contains can be used in conjunction with some of the others to build something more sophisticated. Assume I have a a list of friends and the amounts of money they owe me ... Im very generous and my interest rates a pretty competitive :0) <ROWSET> <ROW> <NAME>Andy</NAME> <AMT>100</AMT> </ROW> <ROW> <NAME>Andrew</NAME> <AMT>60</AMT> </ROW> <ROW> <NAME>Aaron</NAME> <AMT>50</AMT> </ROW> <ROW> <NAME>Alice</NAME> <AMT>40</AMT> </ROW> <ROW> <NAME>Bob</NAME> <AMT>10</AMT> </ROW> <ROW> <NAME>Bill</NAME> <AMT>100</AMT> </ROW> Now, listing my friends is easy enough <for-each:ROW> <NAME> <AMT> <end for-each> but lets say I just want to see all my friends beginning with 'A'. This is more efficient that using an 'if' statement just inside the for-each. <?for-each:ROW[starts-with(NAME,'A')]?> will find me all the A's. The square braces denote the start of the XPATH expression. starts-with is the function Im calling and Im passing the value I want to check i.e. NAME and the string Im looking for. Just substitute in the characters you are looking for. You can of course use the function in a if statement too. <?if:starts-with(NAME,'A')?><?attribute@incontext:color;'red'?><?end if?> Notice I removed the square braces, this will highlight text red if the name begins with an 'A' You can even use the function to do conditional calculations: <?sum (AMT[starts-with(../NAME,'A')])?> Sum only the amounts where the name begins with an 'A' Notice the square braces are back, its a function we want to apply to the AMT field. Also notice that we need to use ../NAME. The AMT and NAME elements are at the same level in the tree, so when we are at the AMT level we need the ../ to go up a level to then come back down to test the NAME value.
