I'm curious as to which is faster; the approximate wireless signal strength (average) is about 60%.   • I cannot stay logged in to a site with my router

    I have a D-Link home router and my isp is Time warner. When I try to login to any site it does not let me. The website does not keep me logged in when I navigate the pages. I have to keep loging in for every web page I see. When I connect my cable modem directly to my computer I am able to stay logged in. Any ideas here?

  • KVM recommendations

    I recently tried out a cheaper KVM solution, a dual monitor one with a USB hub and audio/mic support. It seemed the perfect KVM. However, these are my experiences. When using my keyboard via the PS/2 connection, none of my multimedia keys work (useful, because it has a volume control and my speakers do not, only on a wireless remote control.) I plugged the keyboard in via the USB port - and it seemed to work. However, I believe to switch the hub from PC to Mac, you need to use a keyboard combo, which is only supported when the keyboard is plugged in via PS/2 Sometimes the middle mouse button doesn't work when connected via PS/2. The multi monitor is VGA - I just found out by the looks of things my Mac Mini outputs DVI Digital only (though this is my fault!). Mac works with 2 screens, but switching and switching back can cause it not to display on the 2nd screen unless I go detect displays again. My question is - is there a KVM out there that supports these features? USB keyboard and mouse inputs will full multimedia keys support Dual monitor DVI connections Hotkey to change PCs and physical button USB hub Emulate screens attached when switching to a different computer Works with PC and Mac Audio / Microphone support Does one exist, that won't cost the world? So far the only one that seems to support all this (that I can tell) is this one. UPDATE I ended up buying the Aten CS1642. It's expensive, but it seems to work great!

  • Windows XP SP3 Keyboard stops working

    Here's the strangest thing I have yet to see in 20+ yrs of computer repairs. My in-laws Windowsx XP SP3 has stopped recognizing keyboards. The keyboards work fine in the BIOS, during the boot select process to boot normally, etc. but once Windows comes up it will not recognize any USB keyboard. The USB mouse works fine, have tried different USB ports, different keyboards, etc. nothing works. I can log into the machine via VNC and use the remote keyboard just fine, but not connected locally. Tried a system restore, it says nothing changed. I am about to just re-install Windoze at this point, except I am afraid it will happen again. I have googled for this and it is not unheard of, but I have not found any solution other than nuking it. Anyone have any ideas? I have re-installed the USB drivers for the M/B. Gone into devices and deleted them for a re-install, etc. Keyboard works off a Linux live boot CD, and in the BIOS setup so it is not a hardware issue, and I have tried a few keyboards all of which I know are good and work fine on other systems.

    I have a customized live fedora 12 USB which is working fine. What i want to do is to make a partition of my hard disk bootable so that my customized fedora can be run from hard disk. To accomplish this i did the following steps: Created a primary partition(/dev/sda2) and format it as ext3 and set it as active. Copy all the files in the live usb to /dev/sda2. Following are the live usb contents(all directories): a. boot b. EFI c.   • "Safely remove hardware"...doesn't.

    I have an external USB harddisk that I have scripted to safely shut down after a backup, so the backup operator can unplug it, and knows not to if the lights are still on for some reason. It's always worked fine using the DevEject command-line utility. This week it failed for some reason: DevEject 1.0 2003 c't/Matthias Withopf Ejecting 'USB Mass Storage Device' [USB\VID_0411&PID_002A\00000704C8D2]...FAILED (23,5) Error ejecting device USB Mass Storage Device, vetoed (15,5)! Worse yet, using the SRH tray icon, I click Stop, click OK, it pauses about 5 seconds with OK and Cancel greyed out, closes the sub-window, and then the main window with the Stop button still shows the device, and Stop is still available. I can keep doing that and it never gets rid of the device. I can still access it in Explorer. LockHunter reports that nothing is locking the drive. I've made no changes to the backup configuration or anything to do with the drive this week. Why the sudden flake-out? Short of a restart, which I can't do today before the backup operator goes home, how do I fix it?

  • Constant beeping

    My computer has a problem with beeping. I'll first tell you how it started: One night I decided to watch a cartoon, and I took some water and food with me to eat while I watch. I fell asleep and when I woke up I had spilled water all over my keyboard. I didn't react quickly, because it went unnoticed for about 1 and a half hours. When I noticed, I quickly put my laptop on a radiator to try to dry it. When I turned the computer on there was a constant beeping sound. I didn't know what caused it, and I'm still not sure, but I think it has something to do with the USB hub. If I let the computer stand for some hours without any USB connections, it's fine, but when I put any kind of USB device in, it starts beeping. The laptop keyboard doesn't work so I have to have some kind of USB device connected to use the computer. The beeping is going on while I'm writing this and it makes my computer lag so much that it can make delays from the keyboard be from 1 second to 10 seconds. I need this computer because I don't have the money to buy a new one, and I have to use this computer for homework and games. The beeping is constant, with less than a second between beeps. If anyone has a solution, please help.

  • RTL8192SU + RTL8191E Linux Issue Installing Driver

    OK I've read tons of fourms of people getting the onboard RTL8191E working and the RTL8192SU working dif is U = USB they are both N and i have both Toshiba L500D-00T pre-installed Win Vistax64-HP and i have obtained the free Win7x64-HP upgrade the onboard wificard sucks and can't hold a stable connection for more then 20minutes in windows but the usb is amazing. Now problem is i tried both Ubuntu and Mandriva with no resolve the issue is the onboard drive detects and actually SHOWS that it's there but no wireless networks detect so it's saying no SSID's are broadcasting which i know is a lie since I'm running a 2wire bell dsl modem with built in wifi and a Linksys wrt54g w/ DD-WRT firmware and both are broadcasting fine. Why don't i use the USB? new in Mandriva Linux Control Center 2010.0 it shows up in Other/Unknown as RTL8191S WLAN Adapter and on the right pane this shows up Identification Vendor: ?Manufacturer Realtek Description: ?RTL8191S WLAN Adapter Media class: ? Connection Bus: ?USB Bus PCI #: ?1 PCI device #: ?5 Vendor ID: ?0x0bda Device ID: ?0x8172 Sub vendor ID: ?0x0000 Sub device ID: ?0x0000 Misc Module: ?rtl819xU In the hardware device manager in mandriva it shows up as unknown but shows that it's realtek and that it's a 8192 chipset. but no option to for a driver install and when i do a make in terminal i get this error and no clue what it means [root@John-PC rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1020.2009_64bit]# make make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-desktop-3mnb/build: No such file or directory.   • How do I install Windows XP from an external hard drive?

    I'm trying to install Windows XP Media Center edition by copying the install disc image to an external hard drive and making it bootable. Has anyone had success getting this to work on systems that can't boot from dvds/floppies? I'm basically working from this guide: http://www.dl4all.com/other/21495-install-windows-xp-from-usb.html Update - 2/15/10 I used WinToFlash on my laptop to format my usb hard drive from my install dvd (Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 with Update Rollup 2 from Dell) and selected "boot from usb device" at the boot selection menu and the windows installer started up. However, an error message came up saying that: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." Originally on my desktop machine, I had 1 150Gb SATA drive, and 2 150 Gb SATA drives striped together using RAID. From the hard drive diagnostics, it appears the windows install on one of the RAIDed disks lost a block and this has been preventing me from booting up. I replaced the standalone drive with a new 1Tb SATA drive and disconnected the other hard drives. Could the message be indicating a virus is on the unformatted drive? or the usb hard drive? Update 2 - 2/15/10 The external hard drive didn't find any viruses when scanned. I tried installing Vista Home Premium 64bit SP1 using WinToFlash and that installed successfully onto the new 1Tb drive. WinToFlash was really easy to use and helped a lot, thanks!

  • My Hard Drive isn't Working

    I never use Safely Remove Hardware with Windows XP. It has been working for me for years with my SD card, mouse, hard drive and memory stick. My hard drive has a USB cable and power cord so I can hook it up to any desktop hard drive. Now my hard drives don't like this and I did not know this till now. I am always careful and to wait till it is all finish accessing the USB before I unplug it. Now three of my hard drives can't be seen by Windows, though the others still work. when I hook it up to another computer it works fine. I use the same USB cable to hook up all of my hard drives one at a time. So my USB cable is good. I think that when I unplugged the hard drive this one time, it had a file it still wanted to see and now only this drive does not work only this computer. Then the same thing happens to my other two hard drive after I used it for a week with the same cables. How can I fix this?

  • Cannot open /dev/rfcomm1 : Host is down

    I am working on raspberry PI and on Bluetooth. I am using old raspberry pi kernel as the new one has got some bugs that were not resolved with respect to the bluez daemon. At present my kernel version is 3.6.11. I am using a USB bluetooth dongle and my sole purpose is to auto connect the bluetooth dongle when ever it is in range. For that i think i have to run a script in the backend on RPI that will keep on checking the existence of usb bluetooth dongle. I started from the very scratch. I installed bluez daemon using apt-get install bluetooth bluez utils blueman and then i used hciconfig which gives me that my bluetooth usb dongle is working fine. But when i did hcitool scan , it give me no device in range even though my Serial bluetooth Device was on. I wasn't able to find any device in vicinity. Also when i unplugged and plug the USB dongle again, i was able to scan the serial device , but when i repeat the process, i find the earlier condition of not finding any deice. I had find another useful link, but that need address of the bluetooth device that need to be connected. I want to automate this using hcitool scan, storing the output to the a file and then comparing it with already paired devices and their name. For that i need to figure out why hcitool scan is sometime working and sometime not. ? Can some one help me in figuring out why this is happening. Is there any problem on hardware side i.e Bluetooth dongle is buggy or i had some problem in bluez utils. Edit 1: While as of now, hcitool scan is giving me my remote device address but still i am getting the same issue of HOUST IS DOWN, '/dev/rfcomm1'. I am really not getting any idea of what to be done.

  • 'Unable to mount Filesystem' Error

    Trying to extract data from a 'bricked' Western Digital MyBook Live 2tb drive. I came across a forum that advised to use Ubuntu (booted from a CD) on my Macbook. Managed to download and create a boot CD for Ubuntu (like this little operating system btw). Booted the machine with the CD and plugged the drive (which I had extracted from it's casing and placed into a external USB SATA case & plugged to the laptop). The drive is seen by Ubuntu but each time I click on the drive, it gives me the following error: Unable to mount 2.0 TB Filesystem Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb4, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog -try dmesg | tail or so I am new to this and spent quite some time searching this site to see if I could find a solution to this problem without troubling anyone. I came up with a few that came close but some of the questioners mentioned that they had lost data...which scared me from going further. I need to basically extract 1 particular folder from the drive. If I can get to mount this volume 'sdb4', there is a folder called 'My_Work' which I need to back up. The rest I have/had a copy of.     Anyone know of an external HDD that would have (in addition to USB) a SATA (eSATA) port/cable? i.e. Brand/Model Background - In one location I want to use it is I would like to increase the performance by cabling it directly to the PC SATA port, HOWEVER I don't want to have to open up the PC to do this each time. I was thinking of running a SATA cable out through the PC case so I just plug it directly into the external HDD in question. Perhaps it should be also externally powered too so I don't need to run a power cable out from the PC power supply.

  • Connecting Windows XP to Windows 7 directly using cable

    These are the problems I am encountering. XP can access Windows 7, not the other way around (which is fine, because I don't need it the other way currently) File transfer is too slow like 0.031 MB/s even though netperf and netCPS list around 8-9 MB/s. I disabled firewall on both computers. Both are same workgroup. I left homegroup on Windows 7. Windows 7 sees the connection as unidentified network. 10.1.1.2 (XP) and 10.1.1.1 (Windows 7) Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default gateway and DNS are empty for both of them. Both computer are connected to internet using wireless (using home network), and both of them are connected to each other using wire! If anybody has any pointers, do let me know. I have no problem doing such setup with both computers being Windows 7. This time one of them is XP though, and that seems to be the problem.

    The question says it all. All i want is that my W-Lan connection should be disabled whenever a wired connection is available. What would be the easiest way to do that in Ubuntu/Gnome? In all guides (for instance some about guessnet) i found i had to configure my whole network configuration (WPA keys, DHCP, ...), but i find that a bit too complicated for such a simple use case. I just want to disable wlan0 when eth0 is connected.

  • My iPhone is stuck at screen with USB cable and iTunes logo

    I just tried updating the iPhone's firmware, and things went haywire. iTunes informed the update had failed and linked me to this page. The iPhone is stuck on the image from the top of that page. I held down the sleep and home buttons until it turned off and turned it back on, and then went through the iPhone's 'restore' mode. It then error'd again and I'm stuck back with the logos on the iPhone. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

  • Dell XPS M1330 - power cable pulled by accident and now it won't turn on

    I have a similar problem to what has been posted on this site about when I plug in my Laptop adapter the green light comes on as expected; but, when I plug it into the laptop it goes out. In my case, I know it's not the adapter because I have 2 and they both experience the same issue. I'm quite certain the problem is a short in the laptop. I was using the laptop today and the power cord was pulled out by accident and now i'm into this predicament. How or what do I check on the laptop to isolate the problem? Thanks!

  • Displaylink USB show "Logo / Loading" on monitor

    I tried with this problem for 2 years already. LOL, today, I install Ubuntu for I have to resolve it or I will back to stupid Windows 7. First, I have 3 monitors. My graphic card is support dual ( ATI Radeon ), so I have no problem on extend those multi monitor on VGA and DVI. The 3rd monitor is Displaylink USB. After installed everything required, when I reboot, the displaylink monitor show "Ubuntu ...." like logo / loading screen. I go to System Display , Detect monitor, it only show my 1st and 2nd, NO 3RD Displaylink. I can move my mouse between those 1st & 2nd, but the 3rd is only show the Ubuntu Screen. I press Ctrl+Alt+1, then screen switch to Displaylink USB 3RD monitor, but its "Terminal" not a desktop. Then I press Ctrl+Alt+7 , the screen switch back to my 1st, 2nd, and the displaylink 3rd is witch back to Logo / Ubuntu again.
