    1) Downloaded 11.10 ISO file to Dell XP Workstation 2) Made bootable USB using Pendrivelinux 3) Installed to harddrive using option 1 (Install along side Windows) 4) Rebooted when instructed 5) Booted into Ubuntu just fine (first time) 6) Attempted restart - got first splash screen followed by "input not supported" - tapped ESC and eventually got into Ubuntu 7) Later attempts failed - got "input not supported"; no eventual boot 8) Many retries holding / tapping various keys - same result 9) Booted from USB - all files appear to be in place - can access GRUB on harddrive Suggestions appreciated - must to be able to boot XP.     Here's an interesting tidbit: I have noticed an even more pronounced trend toward centralized or virtual workstations lately. Both my wife and I can sit at home, as we are now, at the dining room table and work on our laptops (exciting life, I know!) but both of us are not actually working locally on these machines. We are both remoting into machines at our respective workplaces.   • Windows 7 laptop with two active network connections will not perform DNS AAAA lookup under certain conditions

    My laptop has two network interfaces. The Ethernet interface connects directly to my provider's edge router. It obtains an IPv6 address via SLAAC. I manually set an IPv6 DNS server. The wireless interface connects to a CPE router that doesn't understand IPv6. If the wireless interface is disabled, I can reach the IPv6 Internet with no problems using the Ethernet interface. I run into problems when both interfaces are enabled and the wireless interface get its IPv4 DNS server via DHCP. Let's look at two scenarios. Wireless interface obtains IPv4 DNS server via DHCP - The CPE router (192.168.0.1) sends its address as the DNS server. In this scenario, Windows 7 will not perform AAAA lookups. The browser uses IPv4 transit to reach dual stack web sites. I can't reach IPv6-only web sites using domain names. I can reach IPv6-enabled web sites using IPv6 literals instead of the domain name. Wireless interface is manually configured with OpenDNS DNS server - Windows 7 performs AAAA lookups using IPv6 transit (via the Ethernet). Everything works fine. My dual homed set-up is definitely not standard. Still, the behavior is very strange to me. A valid IPv6 interface exists in my Ethernet interface. Why won't Windows attempt AAAA lookups in scenario #1? I've included the output of ipconfig /all and netstat -rn. On another machine, which is accidentally a windows server 2003, it returns almost immediately with the correct domain controller name inside the returned DOMAIN_CONTROLLER_INFO structure. Now the question is what is missing on my workstation for that API to find the correct domain controller?

    This is a mixed AD environment, Server 2003 R2 and 2008 R2 I have a 2003 AD R2 and a 2008 R2 AD. GPO is usually managed from the 2008 R2 machine. I have a RD Gateway on another server as well. I setup the CAP and RAP to allow a normal user to log on to the departments workstation. I also adjusted the GPO for that OU to allow Log on trhough Remote Desktop Gateway for the user group. This worked on my windows 7 workstation. But unfortunately the policy is a different name in XP "allow log on through Terminal Services" I can get through right into the machine but when the log on actually happens to the local machine i get the "Cannot log on interactively" error. This is set in (for the local machine) Secpol.msc Local Security Policy "user rights assignment" but is controlled by the GPO in Computer Configuration Policies Security Settings Local Policies "User Rights Assignment" Do I simply need to adjust the same setting on the same GPO but with a server 2003 GP editor? Feel like that could cause issues... Looking for some direction. Or if anyone has run into this issue yet. UPDATE Should this work? support.microsoft.com/kb/186529 Still seems like I will have the issue as the actual GP settings for Log on through Terminal Services is still different between Server 2008 R2 and 2003 R2.... Another Thought: Should I delete the GPO made for the department and remake it with the 2003 R2 server? I have no 2008 specific settings as the whole department runs XP other than myself. If that's a solution I will move my computer out of the department as a solution... Thoughts?

  • Inter-VLAN Malicious Code Scanning

    I am trying to find an inbuilt solution on a Cisco Catayst 3750X Switch to scan all traffic routed from one VLAN to another for malicious code. The situation is that we currently have a development environment which is currently being redesigned to upgrade the network infrastructure to use the 3750X switches to manage server and workstation connectivity as well as inter-VLAN routing. We also have another system that is responsible for taking the builds created on the development environment and imaging various HDDs. Because these are two separate systems, we have a requirement in the workplace to anti-virus scan any data transferred between these systems. This is done by copying the data from the originating system to external USB HDD, scanning in a standalone workstation and then copying the data on to the receiving system. As you can imagine this is extremely tedious and impractical most of the time... (I don't make the rules). Anyway, with this redesign going on, we would like to join the imaging system to the network infrastructure of the development system, keeping separation by the use of VLANs and restricting traffic by using ACLs. As we still have the requirement to scan all traffic I would like to configure some sort of malicious code scanning when ever traffic is routed between these VLANs. I am aware I could install a separate in-line IPS/IDS device, however both systems will be using multiple ports on the switch (obviously), and we won't be able to put a device on each port. I would would prefer not to add additional hardware if the 3750x switch is capable of doing the job. Is anyone aware of any Cisco solution that I could use here, that ideally can be incorporated into the 3750x switch? Thanks in advance.

  • Rsync: General file/folder synchronization

    I have a file server, which is in-charge of pulling a folder tree from multiple workstations on a daily basis. My current method for this is by using rsync, (which works pretty well provided directory names and/or files remain the same) however, when files are renamed or moved about within subdir1, rsync will copy them over to the server, creating duplicates. I have to manually find and delete extraneous files/folders that had been left on the server during previous syncs. Note that I cannot use rsync's --delete flag because any sync from a workstation will then mirror that particular folder tree, instead of merging them to the server. Visual diagram: Server: Workstation1 Workstation2 Workstation(n) Folder* Folder* Folder* Folder* -subdir1 -subdir1 -subdir1 -subdir(n) -file1 -file1 -file2 -file(n) -file2 -file(n) Is there a simple script (preferably in bash, nothing fancy) that can accomplish the deletion of the extraneous files/folders in the event a file is renamed or moved to a different subdir? Is there a different program, much like rsync that can accomplish this task autonomously and in a much simpler manner? I have looked at unison, but I did not like the fact that it keeps a local database for the syncing info. Any tips at all as to how I am supposed to tackle this? Thank you in advanced for your help. EDIT: I have tried unison just recently and I can safely say it is out of the question now. unison is a bi-directional synchronization tool and from my testing, it mirrors the files existing on the server to all workstations. - This is unwanted. preferably, i would want files/folders to stay within their respective workstations and just merge to the server. AKA uni-directional sync; but with renames/moves propagated to the server. I might have to look into Git/Mercurial/Bazaar as mentioned by kyle, but still unsure if they are fit for the job.

  • Name resolution not working with ipv6 on centos

    I just installed CentOs 6.3 on a server to be installed in a data center, but cannot get name resolution / curl to work. I know this is because of it trying to use ipv6, since ping google.com works, curl -4 google.com works, but not curl google.com. I removed the ipv6 adress from the interface and it does not change anything. This is very problematic since most system tools like yum fail at name resolution currently. Browsers like Firefox work because they might be using another tool for name resolution than the one use by curl. I managed to fix this on workstations by completely disabling ipv6 following tutorials like this one / hardcoding name resolution in /etc/hosts. But since I am here configuring a server which will be later installed in a remote data center, I would like not to mess up, understand what is going on and fix it properly. Besides, I will face the same issue with more servers to come so I would really appreciate your help in understanding this problem and how to solve it. I would be happy to provide more information if needed to help understand what is going on. The current network configuration is a small enterprise network, with a DNS server (let's call it A) configured once a long time ago. dig google.com and dig -4 google.com are both refused by the A DNS. But this is also true for my workstation on which curl is working (and yes they both use the same A DNS server). Indeed this faulty server and my workstation have multiple nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf, and the second one is working fine for both of them, so if I remove A from my resolv.conf everything works fine!     i'm trying to access the shares on a server. The credential box appears, and i enter in a correct username and password, and i get access denied. Which would seem to indicate that the username is correct, but the password is wrong. i've tried the password many times, uppercase, lowercase, on different user accounts, with and without prefixing the username with servername\username. What gives that i cannot access the server over file sharing, but i can access it over RDP?

    What I have: Workstations running Ubuntu Jaunty mounting /home on a remote NFS server. User accounts are still created locally on each individual workstation. Workstations running Windows XP / Vista NFS server (as noted above) Windows 2008 server All machines share a single private network (LAN). What I need to accomplish: A single, intuitive (GUI driven) place for an office administrator to create user accounts. This should let anyone login to their (linux or windows) workstation, then fire up remote desktop and use the same login to the Windows 2008 server, from any machine on the network. I have read so much on samba, LDAP vs AD, etc and now I'm even more confused than I was before I began researching the problem. Ideally, Linux and Windows users should be able to get to their local files once logged into the Win2008 server. I am a programmer, not an interoperability guru and I'm completely lost on where to even start trying to accomplish this, plus I've run out of things to Google. How would you do this? Is it even possible?

  • Splitting build cross the network?

    Is there a known solution for splitting build process cross the network machines? Use case: We are an average software development company. We own around 50 development workstations (Quad Core 2.66Ghz, 4 GB ram, 200 GB raid). No need to tell that at any single moment not every machine is loaded to the max. There are 5 to 15 projects running simultaneously at any single moment. Obviously all of them are continuously build on server, than deployed to proper environment. Single project build is taking from 3 to 15 minutes. The problem: Whenever we build 5 projects in a row the last project is going to be ready after around 25 - 50 minutes. Building in parallel does not solve the problem (build is only a part of the game, than you need to deploy, run tests etc.) YES the correct solution is to add another build server, but "That involves buying new Expensive hardware, and we already spent a lot!". Yea, right(damn them)! Anyway. What about splitting build among developers workstation? Lets say whenever we need to build project "A" we check 5 workstations and start build on all that are not overloaded. The build can be canceled by a developer if he really needs all the power of his machine as long as there is at least 1 machine that is still building. After build is finished deployment can be performed to a proper environment (hosted on some server, not on workstation :) ). The bigger the company the more this makes sense to me. Anyone tried something like this? Are there any good practices? Any helpful software?

  • Hyper-v on 2012R2 startup gen1 vm causes the host to freeze up

    I've searched a lot to resolve the following issue, but nothing helped me. My problem is, that starting up a first-gen vm locks up the whole host. Only a hard reset helps. Second-gen vm starts and runs perfectly. The freezes happened on 3 different vms. FreeBSD, Ubuntu, Windows Server 2008R2, while Windows 8.1 on second gen config works perfectly. Im using this pc mainly as a workstation. No eventlog errors nor dumps are generated. My system: Windows Server 2012R2 FX-8350, non OC ASRock 870 Extreme R2 (Crappy board imho) 32GB DDR3 1866@1600 (My motherboard, against the "support" for 1866ram won't work with full speed) 120GB SSD 4.5TB Storage space device I dont think that its due to my system, because vmware workstation was running without problems. Did I forget to configure something? Any help is appreciated. P.S: Even deactivating C1E, C6, C&Q didnt work. P.P.S: With no virtual network adapter set, the system still locks up. Creating a first gen vm without any hdds and network and launching works. Attaching a boot dvd causes the host to freeze. The host freezes as the gen1 vm begins to boot, doesn't matter if from dvd or hdd

  • Can Windows logoff events be tracked?

    I'm working on an application to track network user logon/logoff events in an Active Directory domain; the application will work by auditing security logs on domain controllers. Auditing logon events can get somewhat tricky, but it can succesfully be done. My problem: how can I track logoff events? Based on some research I've done, it looks like these events are only logged locally on workstations, but not on DCs; also, the "lastLogoff" attribute exists on AD user objects, but it's not actually used by anyone. This is a very specific question: is something logged on DCs when a user logs off from a domain workstation? To clarify: I'm not intereseted in other auditing mehods, I can't deploy logon/logoff scripts and I can't install anything anywhere; I also know opened and closed network sessions are logged, but this is not what I'm looking for. I need to audit interactive logons and logoffs to domain workstations, and I can do this by only reading domain controllers security logs; reading each workstation's local event logs is out of question. If this can't be done, it's ok; but I need a clear answer on that. Can this be done? If yes, how?

  • Fixing a typo in machine name

    When i installed windows i had a typo in the machine name that i corrected from the system's 'Computer Name/Domain Changes' - the workstation is a member of a workgroup not a domain. From everything i can see the renamed machine name is correct. Shift gears.... I'm importing SQL logins from my remote server to this, my development workstation and have used the script presented here - a script that generates a CREATE statement for each login found. While I was preparing to run this script's output (from the remote box) i needed to change the domain name from the remote to my local's name - so i ran the same script locally (in order to see what SQL things my domain name is. SQL has the original machine name - the one with the typo. However, the scripts are tossing errors if i try to create logins with that identifier. CREATE LOGIN [Setve\Admin] FROM WINDOWS WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE = [master] But works correctly if i use the updated machine name: CREATE LOGIN [Steve\Admin] FROM WINDOWS WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE = [master] So the problem is: do i have a problem i need to solve? Somewhere, deep in the guts of SQL Server, it has record of a Domain name that does not exist. Should i find and fix that discrepancy? thx

  • DNS to \\Server\ wrong - \\Server.company.local\ works fine

    I had a little network glitch and since then one of my servers shows up wrong at some workstations when typing in \\server\. Example: On workstationA I go to Explorer and and type \\server\ and it brings me to our copier at 192.168.2.101. \\server.company.local\ gets me to the right place at 192.168.2.252. Ping with server pings 192.168.2.252 - same correct result with ping server.company.com nslookup also shows correct result with both. reverse lookup by ip is correct also. I flush the DNS on the workstation and the error still occurs. reboot same result. At that point I give up and start remapping the shares to \\server.company.local\share just to get the user back working... DNS Server has correct entries for that server. Can access the server via \\server\ on dns server, all looks fine. Eventually the workstation figures it out by itself and \\server\ works again but my life wouldn't be as stressful if I had a clue what happened or how to fix it myself.
