• Forking project on Github process

  There is a project on Github that I mostly like and want to use. There are a few things I want to do differently/remove that doesn't make sense for what I want/need. Also I want to add a few things as well. As I understand it, I should fork the project and I can make whatever changes I want and push back to my fork. From there, I also want to occasionally pull into my fork the changes from the original project so I get the latest bug fixes/features. Am I off-base of how I think it should work? How would bring in the changes from the original project?

• Fork dead SVN based project on GitHub

  I previously asked this at stack overflow but it was closed, I believe because 'programmers' is a more appropriate venue for this question. I have done some work on the SVN Importer project (Apache license), which appears to be effectively dead (no published changes in 5 years). I have a login to their svn server but do not have commit rights. At any rate, I'd like to convert this project to Git and push my own changes to GitHub. The GitHub site suggests the svn2git tool for converting svn projects to Git, so I was planning to convert the SVN repository to Git, add my changes, and then push this Git repository to GitHub. I'm wondering, what are the legal requirements and common conventions of this process? Is it acceptable to clone the entire history of the project and move it to GitHub? Also, even though this is essentially a dead project, once I've translated the repository to Git should I put all of my commits onto a non master branch or is it acceptable to use master in this case?

• Which web crawler to use to save news articles from a website into .txt files?

  Hi, i am currently in dire need of news articles to test a LSI implementation (it's in a foreign language, so there isnt the usual packs of files ready to use). So i need a crawler that given a starting url, let's say http://news.bbc.co.uk/ follows all the contained links and saves their content into .txt files, if we could specify the format to be UTF8 i would be in heaven. I have 0 expertise in this area, so i beg you for some sugestions in which crawler to use for this task.

• How to "back track"?

  I find that I start projects and, due to my lack of experience, find that old database structures and huge blocks of code are inefficient and memory-costly. However, by the time I realize a re-design of the entire project is needed, the project has grown to such a size that it is simply too late to go back and modify the project in its current state and requires a completely new project file and the whole shebang. How should I prevent ruts such as this one, where it is too late to go back and modify the current project to fit specifications modified far down the road from the creation of the project? (Apologies in advance for confusing grammar, it's been a long day here... as you can probably tell.)

Regular Expression HTML and CSS HTTP Web programming language (PHP, Ruby, etc.) SQL (command based, not GUI, since most server environment uses terminal only) Javascript and library (jQuery) Versioning (SVN, Git) Unit and functional test Tools Build tools (Ant, NAnt, Maven) Debugging tools (Firebug, Fiddler) Mastering the above makes you a good web developer. Any comments?

• Web development for people who mainly do client side..

  Okay, I'm sure there are a lot of us that has plenty of experience developing c++/opengl/objective C on the iPhone, java development on android, python games, etc (any client side stuff) while having little to no experience on web-based development. So what skillset should one learn in order to be able to work on web projects, say, to make a facebook clone (I kid), or maybe a startup that specializes on connecting random fashionistas with pics etc. I actualy do have some experience with C#/VB.net back-end development a while back, but as part of a team, I had a lot of support from the senior devs. Is C# considered a decent web development language?

• Implementing Multitasking on an iPhone/iOS4 Web App

  I am looking to build a web app that implements background audio and fast app switching. These features work out of the box, when run as regular Safari web pages, but as soon as you add the web-app-capable tag, and try to run in full screen mode, this functionality breaks. I did some testing and even the most basic web app will reload every time when you switch back to it. And seeing as it's a web app, we can't exactly implement the multitasking API. Has anyone found a work around? This isn't a deal-breaker, as you can just avoid full screen mode, but then you also lose the ability to use your own icon in the app switch tray. Perhaps this explains a lack of full screen mode in YouTube's new web app....

• dynamic web reference for use in SSRS

  To use the web service that is part of an SSRS installation, it seems that you need to add a web reference to your project so that you can call it etc (see one of my previous questions). But if I needed to call the web service for different SSRS installations then i need to keep adding extra web references. My asp.net application currently displays reports from several different SSRS installations, not just a single server... Is there a way to either dynamically add the web reference or to dynamically change the server address of where the web service is located?

  I have found a couple of related questions here on programmers.SE: How/where would I best advertise my open source project, in order to maximize my odds of finding collaborators? Where to find open source volunteers? My question is slightly different because I am primarily looking for non-coders to help with a few things in my new open source project. In particular, I'd like one or more people to create an icon and other graphics and to work on a web site, wiki pages, and/or other documentation. My project is a front-end for a baseball card database. So reaching out to baseball card collectors might be useful. Other than that, I would just like anyone who would like to contribute in small ways to a modest project. Where are some good places to advertise and find non-coder volunteers?

• Permission error while trying to access Sql from a web method

  I created a web service which has a few web methods which inturn performs inserts/updates/select from a Sql Server and return non-primitive types. To test the web methods I tried using the Open source tool .net web service studio When I test for the web methods, I get the following error - Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. I searched for solutions and I tried a lot of approaches like setting up the permission levels, the trust level in config file etc. But the error still persists. Can anyone tell me what could be the reason for this error? I have tried toggling the permissions at all levels - Sql Server, web service etc. How can I fix this error?

• Implementing the NetBeans Project API on Maven in IntelliJ IDEA

However, he's using Maven and IntelliJ IDEA and one of the features he needs is project support, i.e., the project infrastructure that's part of NetBeans IDE. Be aware that I'm probably not using IntelliJ IDEA and Maven as optimally as I could and I'm publishing this at least partly so that the errors of my ways can be pointed out to me. Having heard Hanselman say this is something you can do within VS 2010 easily I set out too find information on exactly how to do this but can not seem to find anything. • Changing jobs and leaving a project without a leader (aka, me)

  I'm the lead on a project that has been underway for about a year and a half. Two of us have been working on it. One is the database guy. I'm the javascript/ui guy. Which is to say, essentially no overlap in code knowledge. Here's the thing. Someone is about to offer me a sweet job with a nearly 30% bump in pay. Though I am perfectly happy with my current job and love the project, the new one would be better and I can't imagine saying no. The big problem is that my project is supposed to go into production starting in a few weeks. I will consider the new guys to have disqualified the new job by being bad people who would ruin my life if they won't cooperate and let me start after deployment. Since they seem like decent, ethical people, I don't expect that to be a problem. The current project will be brutalized by my absence. I take some comfort in the fact that I have emphatically requested an understudy for at least six months. That puts a little of the responsibility on the boss's head, but still, it's going to be a really bad thing. What do others of you do when you are a critical to a project when it's time to move on? Do I owe any obligation to stick around even though something better shows up? I know my spouse would object if I found someone else. Does that apply to work? I do have an understudy now, though he's fresh out of college. He's not going to replace me anytime soon. It's a small shop and the boss is going to be crushed. I am traumatized in anticipation of telling him and feel guilty about the practical consequences. I'm looking for some solace and some strategy about how to deal with this transition. Thank you for listening. =========================Subsequent notes ========================= @ChaosPandion, Chance: No, I can't stay to finish the project. I will insist on a compromise where I finish the current sprint (about a month from now) but there is at least a half year, probably a year of solid, full-time, work still to be done. • How to add a daemon to a quickly project

  Currently I'm developing an application with quickly which is divided in two parts: A graphical UI where the user could configure some things, and a daemon which do the most work in the background. I started with the UI, to create some windows for settings and so on. Now I want to start coding the daemon, but I have no clue how to implement the daemon in my quickly project. Could I simply paste the files of the daemon in project folder or is there an implementation method for adding new files to a quickly project? Or do I have to create a new project and merge them together?

• Running my web site in a 32-bit application pool on a 64-bit OS.

  Here is my setup: Dev: - Windows Server 2008 64-bit - Visual Studio 2008 - Solution with 3 class libraries, 1 web application Staging Web Server: - Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit - IIS7.5 Integrated Application Pool with 32-bit Applications Enabled In Visual Studio I have set all 4 of my projects to compile to 'Any CPU' but when I run this web application on the web server with the 32-bit application pool it times out and crashes. When I run the application pool in 64-bit mode it works fine. The production web server requires me to run 32-bit application pool in 64-bit OS which is why I have this configured in this way on the staging web server. (I considered posting on ServerFault but the server part seems to be working fine. It is my code specifically that doesn't seem to want to run in 32-bit application pool which is why I am posting here.)

  On provider A I have an existing web hosting account running my site. On provider B I have my domain name registered pointing to the web hosting on provider A. I've just purchased a web hosting account with provider B and want to move my site there. Is there a way to temporarily use my domain name to point to provider B while I set up the site (e.g. just from my computer)? I tried to change the HOSTS file (Windows) and while pings resolved to what I set, HTTP requests don't.

  Hello, I need to find a very compact, cross-platform web server that can run Lua scripts, ie. either a regular web server like Mongoose that will forward queries to a Lua program in eg.
