Mobile web development - how to?

Hello, I would like to start developing mobile-friendly versions of websites for my clients, however, I am baffled with options and google search wasn't very helpful - there is so many options and opinions, I've been reading for few days now and still have no idea how to start. What's your opinion/experience about/with it? My main points: mobile devices supported (in order of relevance): iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G, Blackberry, Droid powered mobiles, other phone friendly numbers, phone friendly emails contact/register form working on each (or the most possible) devices listed jQTouch seems superb (simple, quick, working), I'm not sure about it on blackberry/droid and I don't want to create 6 web versions for each mobile device - Makes even less sense if you consider, that I'm starting with small web (6-10 pages, 1 contact form, 3 register forms) to play with. Securing Web Services approach valid?

Hi , Currently I am looking at securing our web services. At the moment we are not using WCF so this is not an option. One approach I have seen and implemented locally fairly easily was the approach described in article: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/aspnet/wsFormsAuthentication.aspx Which describes adding a HttpModule which prompts for user credentials if the user browses to any pages (web services) which are contained in a services folder. Does anyone see any way that this security could fall down and could be bypassed etc. I'm really just trying to decide whether this is a valid approach to take or not? thanks

I am helping someone out with a javascript-based web app (even though I know next to nothing about web development) and we are unsure about the best way to implement a feature we'd like to have. Basically, the user will be using our tool to view all kinds of boring data in tables, columns, etc. via javascript. We want to implement a feature where the user can click a button or link that then allows the user to download the displayed data in a .doc file. Our basic idea so far is something like: call a Java function on the server with the desired data passed in as a String when the link is clicked generate the .doc file on the server automatically "open" a link to the file in the client's browser to initiate the download Is this possible? If so, is it feasible? Or, can you recommend a better solution? edit: the data does not reside on the server; rather, it is queried from a SQL database

I have a web api app developed on VS2010. The application calls an external program to run and it runs just fine if I execute in VS2010. But then when I deploy the web api to IIS 7 and 7.5, in some cases, it crashes. Background task in mobile phone to access a secure element and a web server

Is it possible in a GSM mobile phone OS (e.g. Android, Win Mo, Symbian, etc.) to have some kind of background task or application able to exchange data at the same time with a web server and a secure element of the mobile? The purpose if for the web server to be able to push APDUs to the secure element (an retrieve response APDUs) without activating the IHM of the mobile. NB: I know that this is possible when the secure element is the one managing the GSM baseband, for example using BIP as described in Ulysse specifications. My question is only when using another secure element (e.g. Java Card in a microSD).

I have a simple Web Service that send email and is called via: public bool SendMail(string format, string from, string to, string cc, string bcc, string subject, string body, string replyTo) I have never used ajax before, and find I need to call this service and pass form contents to it from a simple html page (I cannot use asp or asp.net unfortunately). Can I get a quick rundown of what is required? I have searched for simple examples, but find I am having difficulty understanding how to call it and pass the parameters required of the Web Service. Business web application platform structure

Hi, I would like to develop a web application in java/spring/hibernate serving as a business platform that I could connect plugins to (i.e. CRM plugin, ware plugin, sales plugin). Those plugins could be dependent of other plugins in a tree manner. The parent project would be packaged as war having all the basic configuration and looks (spring configs, css, scripts), ready to go user and group management, security settings, etc. All together I would like it to behave and look a bit like Joomla, but built using different tools for different purposes. And I have a few questions concerning that project: Do you know of any open source projects offering such a platform ready to go? If not is maven applicable for managing those plugins? What is the best way to package and deploy those plugins? And the last but not least, basically is this the right way to go or is a dead end and it would be better to create a separate web app for those business needs?

Quick to develop web app in Java

Hi all, I need to develop a basic web app very quickly (1 week) for a demo. My requirements are Java (I need to make use of existing Java libraries to access the relevant data) 2 screens One for static data view, maybe some search parameters Other for basic form entry No fancy AJAX required Ideally easy for a web designer to come in and tart it up as necessary, without having to rewrite everything My first stop was going to be to checkout Wicket as I've heard good things about it. I don't have the time right now to dive into anything heavy, which probably writes off JSF in my mind (I played with JSF1, steep learning curve which I've now slid back down). I'm happy to treat the result as throwaway so if there's a framework which starts of well but then doesn't scale up to bigger projects, that would be ok. Any suggestions appreciated on frameworks/approach.

I looked already and could't find anyting good. So a question is, are there any good web frameworks that would allow to easily develop GUI for the majority of high end phones? By this I mean It would have to work the same on majority of high end phones (forget the low cost ones) It would have to simplify the development and hide the ugly details from developer Clear design and good documentation. Also some stability on the market. The focus in on good looking and easy to make GUI. Javascript is only a plus. So basically I am looking for something like jQuery or maybe ExtJS for phone development. EDIT: It would be a big plus if it could be consumed in Delphi EDIT 2: If it was not clear, I am looking for a web base solution. So the target is HTML output and not native code.

Need new method for linking to native mapping from mobile web app

My mobile web apps use a map button which automatically starts the mapping features of Android and iPhone by simply linking to http://maps.google.com/maps?q=New+York. iOs 6 comes out, the links stop working, because Apple wants us to use "maps.APPLE.com". Turns out ANYTHING you send to "maps.apple.com" gets forwarded to "maps.google.com". So now I have to specially detect iOs 6 and swap out links just so Apple can forward everything back to Google anyway. Is there a clean way to open the device/native mapping app from a mobile web app that works on Android, iOs 6, and iOs pre-6, since iOs 6 nerfed it? Advice on creating simple web service

Hi all, I want to build simple SOAP web service. So far I've only worked with existing SOAP/Rest services. And now I'd like to create my own, simple one for starters. For example create simple hello + string web service where I provide the string in request from SOAP ui or similar tool. I have Jboss server installed already, what is the "simplest" possible way to achieve this? I realize I need interface, interfaceImpl, and a wsdl file(generated possibly). Does anyone have some useful advice for me ? thank you

Efficient job progress update in web application

Hi, Creating a web application (Django in my case, but I think the question is more general) that is administrating a cluster of workers doing queued jobs, there is a need to track each jobs progress. When I've done it using database UPDATE (PostgreSQL in this case), it severely hits the database performance, because each UPDATE creates a new row in a table, and in my case only vacuuming DB removes obsolete rows. Having 30 jobs running and reporting progress every 1 minute DB may require vacuuming (and it means huge slow downs on a front end side for all the employees working with the system) every 10 days. Because the progress information isn't critical, ie. it doesn't have to be persistent, how would you do the progress updates from jobs without using an overhead database implies? There are 30 worker servers, each doing 1 or 2 jobs simultaneously, 1 front end server which serves a web application to users, and 1 database server.

My web service was created some time back using IBM JAX-RPC. As a part of enhancement, I need to provide some security to the existing service. One way is to provide a handler, all the request and response will pass through that handler only. In the request I can implement some authentication rules for each and every application/user accessing it. Other than this, What are the possible ways for securing it? I have heard someting called wsse security for web service. Is it possible to implement it for the JAX-RPC? Or it can be implemented only for JAX-WS? Need some helpful inputs on the wsse security so that i can jump learning it. Other than handler and wsse security, any other possible way to make a service secure? Please help.

One application instance for two domain name

Hello, I have two web applications in ASP.NET which are quite the same (same business logic, same DAL, same DB scheme but different instance). The only thing that I need to change is the design (logo, color,...) and the text (global and local resource) to adress two separate business sector. We cannot "subdomain" the application because we need the two app "seems to be" independant. Is it a good idea to run only one instance for the 2 web applications. For example : I will have 2 hostnames : mycompagny.com and mycompagny2.com and I will put an HTTP Module which will set a string which will be propagated in my application like 'company' and 'company2'. I will instanciate the dal only once but the connection string will change depending on the string 'company' or 'company2'. Any pros and cons ? Any other alternatives ?

Creative an interactive GUI for a web application

I have to create a web application (preferably using the Google App Engine) that will allow users to access it through a url link (not a Desktop application). The application graphically looks like a flow chart and each item in the chart can be selected to pull up a video (not in another window). It is recommended that I use Python. I have never made anything for the web before. Is there a best Python GUI API I should use? I've read quite a bit about Django so far I'm not sure if it is the best fit for this or not. Does anyone have any tips for starting this project? Thanks in advance!

Java Web Application

I am interested in creating a simple web application that will take in user input, convert it to an XML file and send the file to a database. Coding wise I feel I am okay, it is just the general setup and what implementation to use I am a bit unsure of. At the moment I have a JSP page containing a form, the user fills out the form and on submit a get method is sent to a servlet, in the servlet doGet() method the servlet is instantiating a java object and passing it the user inputted data. The java object then writes that data to an XML file and sends it to the database via REST. All I would be interested to know is if this the standard/optimal way of creating such a web application. Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks

Here's a step-by-step guide to install Oracle Utilities Web Self Service on windows. Below installation steps are done on: Oracle Utilities Framework version 2.2.0 Oracle Utilities Application - Customer Care & Billing version 2.2.0 Application server - Apache Tomcat 6.0.13 on default port 6500 Other settings include: SPLBASE = C:\spl\CCBDEMO22 SPLENVIRON = CCBV22 SPLWAS = TCAT Follow these steps for a Web Self Service installation on windows: Download Web Self Service application from edelivery. Copy the delivery file Release-SelfService-V2.2.0.zip from the Oracle Utilities Customer Care and Billing version 2.2.0 Web Self Service folder on the installation media to a directory on your Windows box where you would like to install the application, in our case it's a temporary folder C:\wss_temp. Setup application environment, execute splenviron.cmd -e <ENVIRON_NAME> Create base folder for Self Service application named SelfService under %SPLEBASE%\splapp\applications Install Oracle Utilities Web Self Service C:\wss_temp\Release-SelfService-V2.2.0>install.cmd -d %SPLEBASE%\splapp\applications\SelfService Web Self Service installation menu. Suitable web framework for the following scenario

I have the following scenario: I have a view in an Oracle server and all Iwant is to show that view in a web browser, along with an input field or two for basic filtering. No users, no authentication, just this view maybe with a column or two linking to a second page for master detail viewing. The children are just string descriptions of the columns of the master that contain IDs. No inserts or updates. The question is which is the JAVA based web framework of choice that can accomplish the above in the minimum amount of code lines code time(subjective but also kind of objective if someone has expirience with more than one or two frameworks) configuration effort deployment effort and requirements. dependencies and mem footprint Also: 6. Oracle APEX is not an option. 3,4 and 5 are maybe the same in the sense that they are everything except the functionality coding. I want something that I can compile, deploy by just FTPing to the database host, run and forget. (e.g. For the deployment aspect, Hudson way comes in mind (java -jar hudson.war and that's all)). Also: 3,4 have priority over 1 and 2. (Explanation with a rant: I dont mind coding a lot as long as it is application code and not "why the fuck do we still use javascript over http for everything" code) Thanks.

I am looking for something like a subversion dashboard that at the very least can show me commits from across a group of repositories. Is there anything like this available? Since it could just as well be dead simple and I can't find anything immediately I am thinking if just scratching my own itch here, but I am hoping someone has wanted this before? Are there any subversion "dashboards" that an show me even a simple twitter-like list of commits from across my repositories?
