• Looking for combinations of server and embedded database engines

  I'm redesigning an application that will be run as both a single user and multiuser application. It is a .NET 2.0 application. I'm looking for server and embedded databases that work well together. I want to deploy the embedded database in the single user setup and of course, the server in the multiuser setup. Past releases have been based on MSDE but in the past year we've been having a lot of install issues: new installs hanging and leaving the system in an unknown state, upgrades disconnecting the database, etc. I migrated the application to SQL Server 2005 and the install is more reliable (as long as a user doesn't try to install over a broken MSDE installation). Since next year's release will be a complete redesign I figured now's the best time to address the database issue as well. The database has been abstracted from the rest of the application so I just need to choose which database(s) to use and write an implementation for each one. So far I've considered: SQL Server/ SQL Server Compact Edition Firebird (same DB engine is available in two different server modes and an embedded dll) Each has its own merits but I'm also interested in any other suggestions. This is a fairly simple program and its data requirements are simple as well. I don't expect it to strain whatever database I eventually choose. So easy configuration and deployment hold more weight than performance.

• Identify server that made call to web service

  I am working within an intranet environment. We have both a production and development sharepoint server (WSS 3). We have a 3rd party workflow product which runs on top of sharepoint. It is installed on both the production and development sharepoint servers. The workflow product can call web services I have written which are hosted on our web server. How would I have the web services determine which sharepoint server made the call to the web service, be it the production or development server? I would then use this information to server specific information from web.config or database etc. Currently the site hosting web services is setup to allow anonymous access so code such as System.Web.HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name; returns and empty string. If windows authenticaion is used it returns the identity of the currently logged in user, which is no user in identifying the server the call was made from. I need a push in the right direction to address what I believe is probably a common scenario please.

  Hi There, When I try to run my site it gives error as Internal Server error, when I refresh the page I get my result properly.The error page looks like this: Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. • cURL gets Internal Server Error when posting to aspx page

  I have a big problem. I have some applications made on an unix based system, and I use PHP with cURL to post an XML question to an IIS server with asp.net. • Reporting Services "cannot connect to the report server database"

  We have Reporting Services running, and twice in the past 6 months it has been down for 1-3 days, and suddenly it will start working again. The errors range from not being able to view the tree root in a browser, down to being able to insert parameters on a report, but crashing before the report can generate. Looking at the logs, there is 1 error and 1 warning which seem to correspond somewhat. This issue hasn't arisen since, maybe something out of my control has changed....

• Maven (EJB) project with client and server artifacts

  Here's my variation on the "multiple artifacts from Maven build" question: I'm porting from Ant to Maven. My application is an EJB server that is packaged as an EAR, but it also exposes a client JAR for use by other client apps. This jar contains the EJB interfaces, facade class and some helpers. I know that the Maven way is to have one artifact per project (POM); however, both artifacts (server EAR and client JAR) need to be built from the same source tree - server and client share, for example, the EJB and 'home' interfaces. How do I do this in Maven? Do I have one project containing two POMs, say server-pom.xml & client-pom.xml? I was thinking I could also have a parent POM (pom.xml) that can be used to build both client and server with one foul swoop? However, the lifecycles diverge after the 'package' phase, since the server has to go through assembly (tar/gzip), while the client is done after 'package' and can simply be installed into the repository. Any advice/experience on the best way to approach this?

• How to drop/restart a client connection to a flaky socket server

  I've got Java code which makes requests via sockets from a server written in C++. The communication is simply that the java code writes a line for a request and the server then writes a line in response, but sometimes it seems that the server doesn't respond, so I've implemented an ExecutorService based timeout which tries to drop and restart the connection. To work with the connection I keep: Socket server; PrintWriter out; BufferedReader in; so setting up the connection is a matter of: server = new Socket(hostname, port); out = new PrintWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(server.getOutputStream())); in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(socket.getInputStream())); If it weren't for the timeout code the request/receive steps are simply: String request="some request"; out.println(request); out.flush(); String response = in.readLine(); When I received a timeout I was trying to close the connection with: in.close(); out.close(); socket.close(); but one of these closes seems to block and never return. Can anyone give me a clue why one of these would block and what would be the proper way to abandon the connection and not end up with resource leak issues?

• Mercurial client error 255 and HTTP error 404 when attempting to push large files to server

  Problem: When attempting to push a changeset that contains 6 large files (.exe, .dmg, etc) to my remote server my client (MacHG) is reporting the error: "Error During Push. Mercurial reported error number 255: abort: HTTP Error 404: Not Found" What does the error even mean?! The only thing unique (that I can tell) about this commit is the size, type, and filenames of the files. How can I determine which exact file within the changeset is failing? How can I delete the corrupt changeset from the repository? Someone reported using "mq" extensions, but it looks overly complicated for what I'm trying to achieve. Background: I can push and pull the following: source files, directories, .class files and a .jar file to and from the server, using both MacHG and toirtoise HG. I successfully committed to my local repository the addition for the first time the 6 large .exe, .dmg etc installer files (about 130Mb total). In the following commit to my local repository, I removed ("untracked" / forget) the 6 files causing the problem, however the previous (failing) changeset is still queued to be pushed to the server (i.e. my local host is trying to push the "add" and then the "remove" to the remote server - and keep aligned with the "keep everything in history" philosophy of the source control system). I can commit .txt .java files etc using TortoiseHG from Windows PCs. I haven't actually testing committing or pushing the same large files using TortoiseHG. Please help! Setup: Client applications = MacHG v0.9.7 (SCM 1.5.4), and TortoiseHG v1.0.4 (SCM 1.5.4) Server = HTTPS, IIS7.5, Mercurial 1.5.4, Python 2.6.5, setup using these instructions: http://www.jeremyskinner.co.uk/mercurial-on-iis7/ In IIS7.5 the CGI handler is configured to handle ALL verbs (not just GET, POST and HEAD). • "Executing SQL directly; no cursor" error when using SCOPE_IDENTITY/IDENT_CURRENT

  There wasn't much on google about this error, so I'm askin here. I'm switching a PHP web application from using MySQL to SQL Server 2008 (using ODBC, not php_mssql). Running queries or anything else isn't a problem, but when I try to do scope_identity (or any similar functions), I get the error "Executing SQL directly; no cursor". I'm doing this immediately after an insert, so it should still be in scope. Running the same insert statement then query for the insert ID works fine in SQL Server Management Studio. Here's my code right now (everything else in the database wrapper class works fine for other queries, so I'll assume it isn't relevant right now): function insert_id(){ return $this->query_first("SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY() as insert_id"); } query_first being a function that returns the first result from the first field of a query (basically the equivalent of execute_scalar() on .net). • faking a filesystem / virtual filesystem

  I have a web service to which users upload python scripts that are run on a server. Those scripts process files that are on the server and I want them to be able to see only a certain hierarchy of the server's filesystem (best: a temporary folder on which I copy the files I want processed and the scripts). The server will ultimately be a linux based one but if a solution is also possible on Windows it would be nice to know how. What I though of is creating a user with restricted access to folders of the FS - ultimately only the folder containing the scripts and files - and launch the python interpreter using this user. Can someone give me a better alternative? as relying only on this makes me feel insecure, I would like a real sandboxing or virtual FS feature where I could run safely untrusted code.

• MSSQL2008: DTC Transaction - Internal abort

  Hi all, I write a small own replication - a trigger which fires an DTC INSERT to another server (one reason for my own "replication": while trigger is running it calculates some data, another: it works from an express version to an express version). When I do the initial insert from the same Host with the windows authentification it works fine. But there is a webserver on another host, which uses the sqlserver login (for testing sa). When this Host do the initial insert I get a Internal abort after the entlisting and creating phase in the DTCTransaction EventClass (Profiler). The magic is: When I first fire it from the same Host with the windows authentification, I can fire it from the webserver and it works fine. But I just have to wait some minutes and it won't work. Where is my error in reasoning... Thanks! • Keep-alive for long-lived HTTP session (not persistent HTTP)

  At work, we have a client-server system where clients submit requests to a web server through HTTP. The server-side processing can sometimes take more than 60 seconds, which is the proxy timeout value set by our company's IT staff and cannot be changed. Is there a way to keep the HTTP connection alive for longer than 60 seconds (preferably for an arbitrarily long period of time), either by heartbeat messages from the server or the client? I know there are HTTP 1.1 persistent connections, but that is not what I want. Does HTTP have a keep-alive capability, or would this have to be done at the TCP level through some sort of socket option?

• Weird UPD packets on incoming FTP MLSD command

  Hello. I am developing a firewall script for my server. So far it is working fine, except for FTP. Server is dedicated, CentOS based with static IP. There is no NAT between me and server. IPTables is a firewall. Here is a script I use to configure iptables: http://pastebin.com/f54a70fec I allow all RELATED and ESTABLISHED connections in it and load all conn_track modules. I supposed it to be sufficient in order FTP to work with iptables. The problem is that FTP is not working either in passive or active mode. FileZilla and TotalCommander just hangs on MLSD FTP command. • Pdssql.dll cannot be found

  I am attempting to open a Crystal Reports 8.5 document, and when I try to set the database to the Production data server, i get the error "Pdssql.dll cannot be found". Googling, this is a common problem, but none of the fixes I tried seem to work. This is a new computer. I do have SQL Server 2008 client tools installed, but I believe previously I had Sql Server 2005 client tools. I attempted to install the SQL Server 2005 client tools, but that didn't go through due to me having 2008 installed. I require 2008 to do my job now. Everything I search for says this is a 16bit driver, and I need to install the 2005 client tools. Unfortunately this cannot be done due to me having 2008. is there some sort of work-around I can do? Seems, that after cancelling and close it it still saves somewhere a socket that I was connected to server with and while the server fetches for information i cannot access another urls from the same server.   I'm building an application based on the WebSharingAppDemo-CEProviderEndToEnd. When I deploy the server portion on a server, the code gives the error "The path is not valid. Check the directory for the database." during the call to NeedsScope() in the CeWebSyncService.cs file. Obviously the server can't access the client's sdf but what is supposed to happen to make this work? The app uses batching to send the data and the batches have to be marshalled across to the temp directory but this problem is occurring before any files have been batched over. There is nothing for the server to look at to determine whether the peerProivider needs scope. Using the code below with SQL 2005 SMO libraries works fine, but as soon as you use SQL 2008, the memory leak appears.... Any other good way of getting the database staus in SQL 2008? Ah snap, i just realised that i am given the IP addresses and not domain names but a list could still come in handy. How can i determine which whois server to use given a IP address?   Hi guys, I'm getting an Automation error upon running VBA code in Excel 2007. I'm attempting to connect to a remote SQL Server DB and load data to from Excel to SQL Server. The error I get is, "Run-time error '-2147217843(80040e4d)': Automation error". I checked out the MSDN site and it suggested that this may be due to a bug associated with the sqloledb provider and one way to mitigate this is to use ODBC. Well I changed the connection string to reflect ODBC provider and associated parameters and I'm still getting the same error. • How to change identifier quote character in SSIS for connection to ODBC DSN

  I'm trying to create an SSIS 2008 Data Source View that reads from an Ingres database via the ODBC driver for Ingres. I've downloaded the Ingres 10 Community Edition to get the ODBC driver, installed it, set up the data access server and a DSN on the server running SSIS. If I connect to the SQL Server 2008 Database Engine on the server running SSIS, I can retrieve data from Ingres over the ODBC DSN by running the following command: SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET( 'MSDASQL' , 'DSN=IngresODBC;UID=testuser;PWD=testpass' , 'SELECT * FROM iitables') So I am quite sure that the ODBC setup is correct. If I try the same query with SQL Server style bracketed identifier quotes, I get an error, as Ingres doesn't support this syntax. SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET( 'MSDASQL' , 'DSN=IngresODBC;UID=testuser;PWD=testpass' , 'SELECT * FROM [iitables]') The error is "[Ingres][Ingres 10.0 ODBC Driver][Ingres 10.0]line 1, Unexpected character '['.". What I am finding is that I get the same error when I try to add tables from Ingres to an SSIS Data Source View. The initial step of selecting the ODBC Provider works fine, and I am shown a list of tables / views to add. I then select any table, and try to add it to the view, and get "ERROR [5000A] [Ingres][Ingres 10.0 ODBC Driver][Ingres 10.0]line 3, Unexpected character '['.". Following Ed Harper's suggestion of creating a named query also seems to be stymied. If I put into my named query the following text: SELECT * FROM "iitables" I still get an error: "ERROR [5000A] [Ingres][Ingres 10.0 ODBC Driver][Ingres 10.0]line 2, Unexpected character '['". According to the error, the query text passed by SSIS to ODBC was: SELECT [iitables].* FROM ( SELECT * FROM "iitables" ) AS [iitables] It seems that SSIS assumes that bracket quote characters are acceptable, when they aren't. How can I persuade it not to use them? Double quotes are acceptable.
