• Firefox unable to load SSL Certificate Chain, while Chrome, IE do

  I created a certificate for our IIS 6 by sending a request (created with openssl) to our organization's CA. I already had trouble to integrate the private key into that certificate, that has been solved, see SO question IIS 6.0 now uses the certificate (with TSL v1 and SSL v3), that is the 4th in cert hierarchy. Now, if I access the intranet site, chrome accepts the certificate, so does IE, but Firefox complains about an insecure connection and wants me to add an exceptional rule. If I look into the certificate, how FF presents it to me, I cannot see any of the three issuers. How can this be? If I connect via openssl s_client -showcerts -connect... I only see my own certificate too, which is said to be not verified. I am quite confused now. Where's the mistake and how can I make FF accept certificate without forcing our users to add that exceptionrule? Maybe do I have to add all the three issuer certificates into cert store of the win2003 server that hosts IIS 6.0 ??

• Should I never put a transactional replication distributor on a subscriber server?

  What factors into choosing a distribution server for transactional replication? In our topology, we've always had the distributor reside on the publishing server. We rarely generate snapshots and performance is good enough, so this is okay for us today. One of our instances is moving to a cluster, so we need to move the distributor off for resilience/symmetry. Right now our two choices are to use a server physically close to the publishers, or our single subscription server. Our publisher is in our main office, and our subscriber is in a colocation facility off-site which our ISP runs. We have a pretty good line to it. The reason we're even considering the latter is to save work and licensing costs.

• Warning popups that direct to 3rd party sites

  Lately, I've been getting warning popups on my browser (latest version of Chromium) that notify me that my Java version of current browser is outdated and needs to be updated. What's alarming to me is that it sends me to some sites I've never heard of like Malest.com. When I block a site, it redirects me to a different one. I don't know how to track what's causing these alerts. I ran Microsoft Security Essential and it found nothing. Any suggestions on what to do to nail down this irritating problem?

• Move MySQL master

  I currently have a master db server (lets call it db1) and 6 slaves (slave1-6). I've setup a new server (db2) as a slave of db1 and it's in sync. I want to change all the slaves to use db2 instead of db1, but with minimal downtime/data loss. At the moment the only way I can think of doing it is shutting down our website (so data stops being written to db1), waiting until all the slaves are up to date, flush logs on db1, shut it down. Reset master on db2, change all slaves to point to db2 with log position = 0. Is this the right way to do it or is there a way to do it without taking the site offline?

• How do you setup 64-bit PHP5 with APC?

  I followed this # script on my webhost's wiki to setup a custom install of PHP5, but now theyre telling me they need to move my account to a 64-bit server, and I have no idea how to set this up. APC needs the PHP5 installation to use cgi/fastcgi. I Dunno how that applies to 64-bit or what other considerations need to be made. Does anyone have any idea how to do this, or by least changing the #script to compile using the 64-bit PHP. I'm learning so much from this site, thanks for your help.

• need help from some professional how to redirect old or invalid url

  I recently upgraded a site and almost all URLs have changed. I have redirected all of them (or so I hope) but it may be possible that some of them have slipped by me. Is there a way to somehow catch all invalid URLs and send the user to a certain page and somehow know what URL the person came from so I could log this, and fix those? I'm thinking I could use .htaccess somehow but am not sure how.   I´ve to make an offer to a client who wants me to develope a web-service for him. I have some trouble calculating the pricing - can you help me? Here is a rough outline of the project: It´s a portal on which various artists and entertainers can register and administrate there profile (texts, gallerie, some embedded videos, choose categories and radius of offer, etc). Other user can browse the artists by 3-4 level categories and countries/staats. If someone wants to hire a artists, he can put them in an "shopping-basket" and can mail everyone in his basket. The Artists can answer them with a form on the website (he doesn't get the email of the other person). Users should be able to comment/rate the artists. But if an artists wants this comments/ratings visible on his profile he must pay, and after that, the admin of the site must activate this comments/ratings. So, no more information given, what would you charge (ca.)? Edit: It´ll be developed with php/codeigniter. A .psd design is already there.

• Good quality Secure Software Development Training [closed]

  Just had my annual appraisal and found out my company is willing to pay for training and exams etc! Woohoo (they kept that one quiet). I'm interested in doing a course on secure development techniques. Has anyone got any suggestions for good quality distance learning courses in secure development (I could probably get a couple of days off to attend a conference/ course if required)? We're mostly an MS .Net house but I have no particular allegiance to MS or any other programming language (though, obviously, C++ is the best language in the world). I have 12 years development experience working in (what are now) PCI:DSS environments, including designing and developing a key management system and I have some knowledge of basic attacks (XSS, injection etc). I would prefer a hard course I struggle with to a basic course I learn 3 things from (but hopefully get something right at my level). • No WIFI on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS after today software update

  I just got new dell inspiron3537 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (no windows O/S). It got some wireless (hard block) yesterday. So, this morning, I ran the software update all the security update. After that I can't see "Wireless" in system setting. So, I updated all the software update and looked thru several web site and found "sudo lshw -c network" command. • Is the community MySQL safe for production use?

This is because I found this on MySQL's site: If you are running a MySQL production level system, we would like to direct your attention to the product description of MySQL Enterprise Edition at: http://mysql.com/products/enterprise/ When I check the features, it seems like the community edition does not support transactions, while the enterprise version does. If it is true that the community edition is not right for production, then it seems like posgresql may be my way out, for it supports transactions and it is fully opensource. • Horrible time with WAMP, Joomla and Windows 7 (Permissions)

  I have WAMP and Joomla installed on Windows 7. I have made a virtual host outside of the www directory that houses a test joomla site. I have also made a joomla component that I want to install and test on this virtual host. I am having constant problems with permissions. I have given all users full access to the folder containing the files under the security Tab in Win7. It seems to me that when (Apache/PHP) creates a file it put restrictions on the permissions which does not allow it to delete or edit the file anymore so I have to manually go and delete the files when I want to uninstall my component. Also, I cannot install the .zip - instead I have to unzip manually to the tmp folder because when I upload the zip in the Joomla Installer I get the same permissions problems as above. How can I get rid of these issues once an for all?

• For very beginning startup: home server or EC2?

  The micro instance of Amazon EC2 only has ram of 613MB, my laptop got 8GB. And I suppose likewise the processing power of my computer would be better than the micro instance. My question is, what are the considerations in deciding to host yourself or on Amazon EC2, especially for a really baby startup? For example, would network speed be a problem? My computer broadband network is 100Mbs up to 1Gbs. What would Amazon compare to this? My site at these moment would just host some images and perform some php requests. I would probably also use cloudflare but seems it increases the dns lookup time considerably... And of course the overall objective is to make the best user experience.

• Win xp reinstall now I am unable to connect to broadband what shall I select to do this?

  Hello, My hardrive was failing so I needed to reinstall win xp. I completed the reinstall and the drivers but now only the wireless connection works. The broadband states connected but does not go out to the interenet. When I click Internet Explorer it says unable to find webpage. I have tried several major sites so I know its not the site but some configuration or something I need to do on my end. When I go to the cmd prompt and renew the ip it refers to my wireless nothing about this broadband connection. What do I type/select to get this to go out to the Internet. The broadband is working for my other laptop so I know the connection is not the issue. Any help would be much appreciated thank you.

• Unexpected "waiting for localhost"?

  So I ran into something that kind of worried me today. Lately my computer has been kind of slow and I'm dealing with that, but today when I opened Facebook in Google Chrome, I noticed a message in the bottom left corner while it was loading the site that said "Waiting for localhost". It was brief and I managed to notice it because my computer is slower than it used to & it caused Chrome to hang briefly, long enough for me to read it. As I'm quite confident in that Facebook isn't running on my localhost, I'm wondering what could potentially make Chrome wait for localhost while I'm loading webpages from external servers. Is there a malware of some kind that I should be worrying about? Unfortunately I have no other information than this to go on, and I have no idea how to further investigate this, if it generated any logs or whatever. I'd appreciate any help in figuring out this matter!

• Previous Versions delayed with SBS 2008 / Windows 7

  The SBS 2008 at this site has Previous Versions enabled on a mapped drive. The snapshots happen 3 times a day. I doubt they take very long; the diff size is only a few GB. The problem is that the users on Windows 7 cannot see their previous versions until a few hours later. Is there some indexing that has to happen before the Previous Versions are visible to the client machines? Edit: In the application log, 3 minutes after every scheduled backup, there is an event for VSS (EventID 8224) saying "The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout" Apparently this means it has finished successfully, even though modified files still do not show another version.

• connections on port 80 suddenly refused / server not responding

  my dedicated server stopped responding to requests on port 80 today out of sudden, i havent touched anything in more than a month. its ubuntu 10, varnish + nginx + php-fpm, only 1 website. load is at 0. i messaged my ISP if they changed something but no reply yet. i tried to access the site via http://web-sniffer.net/ and it times out on port 80, but if i connect directly to nginx on port 8080 it loads just fine. for normal users, it doesnt load on neither of these in normal browser. any tips what to check or what could be causing this?

  I'd like to know if there is a way (a software, a keyboard combination, etc...) to switch between DVI and VGA screen on the same monitor. I've two PCs connected to the same monitor, far away (80cm) from me. To push the monitor button is not so easy and comfortable as could seems, moreover if you have to do it almost 20 times a day. • how to serve php files on a Apache server (localhost) running Coldfusion/MySql?

  I'm still learning my ways around on my localhost server, whih is running Apache 2.2, Coldfusion8 and MySQL Server 5.5 (on Windows XP). I need to work on a site I inherited, which also ran some PHP scripts under the same setup. I have installed PHP5 on my localhost, but when I open a dummy page with: <?php phpinfo();?> I only get plain text returned, so I guess I haven't configured Apache correctly to also serve PHP (while defaulting to Coldfusion). Question: Where do I need to get started if I want PHP to work on my current setup, too? Is there something I need to add to the httpd.conf file? If possible I don't want to uninstall/reinstall everything, because it took forever to get everything to work (excluding php). Thanks for any pointers!

• IIS 7.5 401.3 Access Denied

  I am having this weird issue with IIS 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2 x64. I created a site in IIS and manually created a test file index.html and everything worked. When I try to do a deployment, I copy all the files from my local PC to the IIS server, try to access index.html (this is the proper deployed file) and getting 401.3 access denied error. I then try to manually recreate index.html and copy content into this newly created file and the page is accessible again... I just can't figure this out. So the issue is that IIS 7.5 can't server files that have been copied from other PCs. I tried to reset/apply permission settings to the copied folders/files but nothing has worked. Please help. Thanks! By the way, the files that I copied are just some html cutups i.e. generic html, css and image files, nothing special.

• trouble accessing mail server from outside domain

  Our organization just moved our Website/Domain to a hosted VPS. We elected, for the time being, to keep our email (Exchange) running at our office. On our new VPS, we simply add a DNS record to redirect our mail to our on-site exchange server. This worked out well, as mail is coming and going with no problems. Recently, we ran across an issue when setting up outlook from outside of our office (Not on same network as exchange server). When configuring mail server address, it keeps prompting for credentials. Anyone got any ideas on why this is happening? Is our VPS not allowing Outlook to find our exchange server? If so, how can we bypass it?

• Cannot Access Server from External IP (Router)

  We have an Ubuntu 10.04 LAMP server running on site (Apache is on port 80). It is running fine through the LAN, but I cannot access it using its external IP address through the Netopia 3000 Series modem by which it is connected to the internet. I have tried using what Netopia calls "Pinholes" (Port Forwarding) to make the server accessible, but a telnet to the external address just gives me "connect to address x.x.x.x: Operation timed out." I have also tried enabling "Services" and "IP Passthrough" on the router, but it gives the same result as above. How can I enable the server to be accessed through its external IP address? Because it connects fine locally, it would seem to be a problem with the Netopia router. Update: Booting the server in GUI mode instead of text mode solved the problem instantly. Any ideas why?

• Can htpasswd be used to restrict access to a URL rather than a specific folder?

  I would like to restrict access to certain URLs with htpasswd files, rather than folders, is this possible? For example, I wish to restrict the URL: www.example.com/pages/id/227/Restricted_Page But allow access to other URLs such as: www.example.com/pages/id/100/Normal_Page Is this possible? The "pages" part of the url refers to a pages.php file, and the "id" part is the function name in that file. The reason for wanting to do this is because of migrating existing restrict lists, in the form of htpasswd files from another site. Many thanks.
