• Two Firefox windows vs two browsers? Ram Consumption

  I don't know enough about Ram & sharing to know what the difference is here. Normally, I run Chrome in one desktop for personal use, and Firefox on a second desktop for business. I like the separation of saved passwords and whatnot. However, I recently learned that I can open two different profiles in Firefox at the same time, so I was wondering if that would be cheaper to my system resources, or not? Out the door, I don't think it would save more than 40-60mb of ram... but I'm wondering, 3 hours later, if ram handling will be better using just one browser for all my heavy lifting. I only have 2gb of ram and I run iTunes and Photoshop as well, almost all day. So I like to save ram where I can. Any thoughts? UPDATE: I've been centering around chrome more recently and using firefox for testing. Dev isn't bad on Chrome and it's great at releasing memory when I close tabs. In retrospect, I think the best answer to this question is simply for me to buy another 2gb of ram.

• How to see the properties of a DOM element as they change in realtime?

  JavaScript code can update the properties/attributes of DOM elements in real time by responding to events and so on. Here is an example. In the table on that page, move your mouse over the cells. Notice how they change color when the mouse is on them, and the color goes away when you move the mouse to another cell. Now, using Firefox or Chrome (but not IE, Opera, etc.), I want to examine the background color, expressed in RGB or hex or whatever, of the cells updated in real time, as the mouse cursor enters and leaves the region and causes the JS to do its thing. The behavior that I observe, currently, is that the Inspect Element functionality of both Firefox and Chrome does not update the value of the properties as they are updated by JavaScript. So, in order to view the latest value of the property, I have to inspect the element again, and it takes a momentary "snapshot" of the values. But since the values only change while I have the mouse on them, I can't take a snapshot of the value I want while my mouse cursor is over the cell, because I have to remove my mouse from the cell to select the "Inspect Element" item in the right-click list! If it is possible to have the values updated in real time using either Firefox or Chrome, or an extension, on any recent version of the software (up to the latest stable), please provide instructions for doing so.

• Desktop appliciations are unable to launch my browser in Windows 8

  I have a fresh copy of Windows 8 Pro installed from MSDN. I have Google Chrome installed (stable channel) and it is set as my default browser. I even went into Control Panel Default Programs to ensure that Chrome had all its defaults. When other desktop applications try to launch my browser they always fail. For example, while trying to install the Android SDK for Windows the installer accurately detected that I did not have the JDK installed. It provides a friendly button to visit java.oracle.com. When pressing this button, nothing happens at all. You can see that here: http://youtu.be/XXL8GhuWWg0 If it were only that application that was having issues I wouldn't think anything of it but I have been encountering similar issues all over the place. Probably the most irritating one is when visual studio has updates; clicking the update button does nothing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwd1mn3TId0 You can see in that screencast that Visual Studio is not able to launch the browser no matter what I click. The update button doesn't do anything and neither do the two links in the update's description. Any suggestions? I'm assuming it's a Windows issue since it is happening in multiple applications. UPDATE: Setting IE as the default browser fixes the issue. So it has something to do with it not being able to launch Chrome programmatically. Is it even possible to workaround this bug or do I have to suffer with IE as default for now?

• Can't reach server without proxy (website down from my home)

  I have a website hosted on Hostinger However I am experiencing problems with my wordpress site. This is really annoying. If I understood the situation right, The server is blocking me or denying access to my own website. When I visit the site with google chrome, it returns: Oops! Google Chrome could not find Same thing happens to firefox! Firefox can't find the server but when I do a check if my site is online and working through http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ it says that the site is working and up. Another thing, I access the website through a proxy, both on chrome and in firefox, and t works. Why is this? I have also recently installed the plugin Better Wp Security 5 days ago. Could the plugin have caused it? but I don't remember setting any IP's to be blocked. Also, this happens at random times, sometimes I can access it, sometimes it fails to reach the server. I am currently developing the site live. Was I blocked by the server for frequently refreshing the page? (duh, I'm a developer and I need to refresh to see changes.) or is this a problem with my ISP's DNS server? How can I resolve? and what are the possible fixes? Thanks in advance! -Jomar

• Add Intellisense when using the URL rewritingnet config file

  I often use the URL re-writing engine that comes with Umbraco which is from urlrewriting.net and I have always found it very fiddly to edit the configuration file, I wish I have know it was possible to add Intellisense to Visual Studio, and I guessed that most people would also not realise this, after all, who reads the manual right?!So, if you are someone who edits the urlrewriting.config without Intellisense, but would like to use it, this is how you do it :)1) Download the URL rewriting source code files from urlrewriting.net2) Unzip the source files and find the urlwritingnet.xsd file, put this file into your web project, or the directory where your urlredirect.config lives.3) Open up the web project and then open your config file, and hey presto! You should find you now have intellisense!So, the next question is, are there XSD files for the rest of the Umbraco config files, and more importantly for the Umbraco.xml file? If not, does anyone fancy creating them? I am sure intellisense for all these files would be very helpful :)

• Creating PDF documents dynamically using Umbraco and XSL-FO part 2

  Since my last post I have made a few modifications to the PDF generation, the main one being that the files are now dynamically renamed so that they reflect the name of the case study instead of all being called PDF.PDF which was not a very helpful filename, I just wanted to get something live last week, so decided that something was better than nothing :)The issue with the filenames comes down to the way that the PDF's are being generated by using an alternative template in Umbraco, this means that all you need to do is add " /pdf " to the end of a case study URL and it will create a PDF version of the case study. • PDF from Umbraco | Creating PDF case studies from data in the Umbraco CMS

  Last week we launched the first version of our website based on Umbraco 4.5.2 and this week we have just added a bit of extra functionality to the case studies section which enables you to download the case studies as PDF documents.To do this we used the PDF Creator package by Darren Ferguson, this is actually a wrapper around a product from a company called Ibex, which is where you can download documentation for the mark up required.The way Darren has made the implementation is really simple for anyone already familiar with the Umbraco CMS. You simple create a new template and call a Usercontrol macro, this then does the magic in the background and passes an XSLT file to the ibex engine.What you need to be aware of is that you need to learn a new mark up language called XSL-FO this is actually part of the XSL 1.0 specification and is a language used to express print layouts.As an indication of timescale, from knowing nothing about XSL-FO to the finished product that you can see on the website now has taken me 2 days of learning and just fiddling with the mark up to get the final result.If anyone is interested I might post some code snippets to show you how some of it is done, I would also be really interested to have some feedback about the PDF layout and what you like and don't like about it.Cheers,ChrisPosted using BlogPress from my iPad

• Allen for Umbraco with location EXIF meta data

  The latest version of Allen for Umbraco has now hit the Apple App store, we have managed to add some nice improvements to this version that include:Storing location and direction information when photos are taken within the AppEmbedding EXIF data into the images when they are uploadBackground UploadingPull to refresh the media tree Location and DirectionBy default when the camera is used within an application the location and direction that the camera is pointing is not stored within the image meta data. We have now added full support so that this data is now added. We have added a setting which allows you to prevent this data from being uploaded to your website if you do not want the location data to be sent you can turn it off within Allen, Note: Please don't forget that location services do need to be turned on to allow the app to access the images in the phone's asset library.We have had quite a few ideas from users already for using this location data, including logging free parking in Denmark to geo-tagging holiday photos and linking the photos to Google street view. Embedding EXIF dataWe now embed all the meta data available on the iPhone into the image when it is uploaded to your server, this allows you to pull the data out and use it within your site. Have a look at Cultiv's Photo Meta Data package for great example code that allows you to automatically pull this data out and populate properties on your Umbraco media item.We slightly modified the source code of this package to allow the package to always extract the image data, as the default package requires a property to allow the data to be extracted, it's an easy change, if you get stuck add a comment to this post. Background UploadingIf you try to upload multiple images and need to start doing something else on your phone, you can now click the home button and the application will continue to upload your images in the background. As soon as it has finished you will receive a standard Apple notification. Pull to RefreshOur final enhancement has been to add "Pull to refresh" to the media trees, just pull the tree downwards with your finger and it will refresh, this is useful if you are adding items to your media tree while testing your site with Allen for Umbraco. • Introducing a new Umbraco datatype for Multi-lingual websites.

  Over the last 6 months we have been building various multi-lingual sites for different clients and for some of the clients they have 1 to 1 relationships between some or all of their pages.Within Umbraco, you can copy a page ( or whole tree of pages ) and keep a relationship between each of the pages and their new copy, this allows content editors to subscribe to change notifications that Umbraco can create if one of the linked pages is changed.Unfortunately one thing that is missing in Umbraco is any way to see which pages are related to each other and to have a quick and easy way to jump between the related pages.We created a datatype that solves these problems and thought we would release it as an open source project ( which we are still maintaining )Currently you can:1) See current relationships2) Add relationships3) Limit the number of relationships that can be added ( by the data type )4) See the Country flag ( assuming a culture has been set on each of your top level site nodes for each country site )5) Link between the documents6) Change or delete the linksAn example where multiple languages are allowed:An example where only 2 languages exist (1 relationship):You can download the datatype from the Umbraco project page:Vizioz Relationships for UmbracoPlease do let us know what you think :)

  You can’t be online all the time, and despite the majority of YouTube videos being nut-shots and Lady Gaga parodies, there is a lot of great content that you might want to download and watch offline. There are some programs and browser extensions to do this, but we’ve found that the easiest and quickest method is a bookmarklet that was originally posted on the Google Operating System blog (it’s since been removed). It will let you download standard quality and high-definition movies as MP4 files. Also, because it’s a bookmarklet, it will work on any modern web browser, and on any operating system! Installing the bookmarket is easy – just drag and drop the Get YouTube video link below to the bookmarks bar of your browser of choice. If you’ve hidden the bookmark bar, in most browsers you can right-click on the link and save it to your bookmarks. Get YouTube video   With the bookmarklet available in your browser, go to the YouTube video that you’d like to download. Click on the Get YouTube video link in your bookmarks bar, or in the bookmarks menu, wherever you saved it earlier. You will notice some new links appear below the description of the video. If you download the standard definition file, it will save as “video.mp4” by default. However, if you download the high definition file, it will save with the same name as the title of the video. There are many methods of downloading YouTube videos…but we think this is the easiest and quickest method. • Using Take and skip keyword to filter records in LINQ

  In LINQ we can use the take keyword to filter out the number of records that we want to retrieve from the query. Let’s say we want to retrieve only the first 5 records for the list or array then we can use the following query     int[] numbers = { 5, 4, 1, 3, 9, 8, 6, 7, 2, 0 };     var first3Numbers = numbers.Take(3); The TAKE keyword can also be easily applied to list of object in the following way. var first3WAOrders = (         from cust in customers         from order in cust.Orders         select cust ) .Take(3); [Note in the query above we are using the order clause so that the data is first ordered based on the orders field and then the first 3 records are taken. In both the above example we have been able to filter out data based on the number of records we want to fetch. But in both the cases we were fetching the records from the very beginning. But there can be some requirements whereby we want to fetch the records after skipping some of the records like in paging. • How to open directory in Guake from Nautilus

  In Nautilus, I have upon right-clicking a directory, the option to open a Terminal with the prompt in the selected directory. I think this is very handy and I use it a lot. Now I would like to use Guake instead of the classic terminal. Is there a way to do this? I'm struggling with nautilus-actions. I can open Guake allright (i.e. it drops down from the top since it's permanently loaded), but the prompt isn't located at the directory of choice. In addition, it's one more mouseclick to open the terminal (if it would work), I would prefer a shorter way. Anyone any idea how to manage this? (or could this be a possible feature request?) • Gnome extensions stay in the list after being removed

  I've got a little issue with gnome shell extensions. After installing some of them, I understood I didn't like them and decided to remove them. The extensions themselves (their folders in /home/username/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions) were deleted successfully. However, the deleted extensions were not removed from the list of installed extensions at extensions.gnome.org. They also were not removed from the list in gnome-tweak-tool. So now in my list I have a bunch of extensions that I have already deleted. The funny thing is that I can't reinstall them too, since both the gnome-tweak-tool and the website think they are still there. This isn't a big deal of course, but I find it to be a little annoying. Reinstalling gnome-tweak-tool didn't help. Is there a way to somehow update the status of installed extensions?

  So I'm writing my texture class in my opengl game, I get to the part where I would normally set GL_TEXTURE_MAX_ANISOTROPY_EXT, and I'm shocked to discover that it's undefined! This exact same extensions worked perfectly in a different application, so I know it's not a typo or something. It's worth noting that I'm getting my extensions using glcorearb.h, instead of glext.h, because I have no intention of supporting the compatibility profile. Could this be my problem, and if so, how do I work around it?

• Visitors have old website cached in their browsers

  My client's new website is example.com, the old website is example.co.uk. I've re-pointed the A Records to the new website (so as to leave the emails alone) and put in 301 redirects from old pages to new pages. But, my client is upset as he (and he thinks many of his clients) have the old website cached in their browsers and won't know how to clear their browser cache. Is there anything I can do to overcome this and if not, what sort of time will browsers finally stop using their cached pages so I can at least go back to my client and tell him that his clients will finally start to see the new website?

• How do I fix gnome shell themes?

  This is my fifth full format and install of Ubuntu in under a month. I finally have my Gnome 3 desktop working again, but again, the Gnome shell themes is not select-able. I have asked the question of how to fix this common issue before, but I have seen no positive resolution. Does anybody know of a simple fix? This is a common issue and I have seen hundreds of postings related to it, but other users only seem to get half-way answers also and it goes unresolved. Would it be advisable to completely purge Gnome desktop and reinstall? If so how would I do this? I cannot use any extensions if the shell is not working, so I am desperately seeking resolution for the issue. Thanks in advance.

• Playing part of a sfx audio file in HTML5 using WebAudio

  I have compiled all of my sound effects into one sequenced .ogg file. I have the start and stop times for each sound effect. How do I play the individual effects? That is, how do I play part of an audio file. More specificially, I've created a dictionary { 'sword_hit': { src: 'sfx.ogg', start: 265, // ms length: 212 // ms } } that my play_sound() function can use to look up 'sword_hit' and play the correct audio file at the correct start time for the correct duration. I simply need to know how to tell the WebAudio API to start playing at start ms and only play for length ms.

• Gnome-shell worskpace preview on dual screen

  I'have isntalled gnome3 and I have dual screens(laptop, monitor). Is it possible to see the other monitor in workspace preview in the gnome panel??? I only can see primary monitor, that's why i'm not able to move windows inside the second screen? I've tried to change some settings in dconf , but with no luck.
