  • 5 ways the Exceptional DBA Award could boost your career

    - by Rebecca Amos
Winning the Exceptional DBA Award won’t just get you full conference registration for the PASS Summit – it could also change your life and career. With a little help from our past winners, here are the top 5 ways the Exceptional DBA Award could take your career to the next level: 1. Recognition from your peers As 2009 winner Josef Richberg says, “Being recognized by your peers is the highest honor one can receive.” Whether you enter yourself, or are nominated by a friend or colleague, the fact that the winner is selected by the SQL Server community is a great chance for your peers to recognize your achievements as a DBA. 2. Boost your CV Winning the Exceptional DBA Award not only shows that you excel as a DBA, but that SQL Server experts think so too – a huge vote of confidence for any prospective employer. 2008 winner Dan McClain agrees, “It brings another level of 'wow' to my resume”. 3. Networking opportunities within the community Whether you want to increase your experience as a writer, speaker or blogger, winning the Exceptional DBA Award can open up new opportunities within the SQL Server community. Plus you’ll make new friends along the way, as Josef has discovered: “It is an unbelievable community that has become an extended family.” 4. Award ceremony at the world's largest technical SQL Server conference The Exceptional DBA Award is presented at the PASS Summit, giving you great networking opportunities and a chance to be seen by people throughout the SQL Server community. 5. Increased personal confidence Finally, the Exceptional DBA Award should give a huge boost to your personal confidence. Last year’s winner, Tracy Hamlin has certainly found this: “The recognition has given me new confidence and the drive to accomplish even loftier goals.” Read the full interview with our past winners to find out how why they’re encouraging you to enter this year’s Exceptional DBA Awards. • Now Available: Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate Virtual Machines with Sample Data and Hands-on-L

    - by John Alexander
From a message from Brian Keller: “Back in December we posted a set of virtual machines pre-configured with Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2, Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010 Beta 2, and 7 hands-on-labs. I am pleased to announce that today we have shipped an updated virtual machine using the Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate bits, a brand new sample application, and 9 hands-on-labs. This VM is customer-ready and includes everything you need to learn and/or deliver demonstrations of many of my favorite application lifecycle management (ALM) capabilities in Visual Studio 2010. This VM is available in the virtualization platform of your choice (Hyper-V, Virtual PC 2007 SP1, and Windows [7] Virtual PC). Hyper-V is highly recommended because of the performance benefits and snapshotting capabilities. Tailspin Toys The sample application we are using in this virtual machine is a simple ASP.NET MVC 2 storefront called Tailspin Toys. Tailspin Toys sells model airplanes and relies on the application lifecycle management capabilities of Visual Studio 2010 to help them build, test, and maintain their storefront. Major kudos go to Dan Massey for building out this great application for us. Hands-on-Labs / Demo Scripts The 9 hands-on-labs / demo scripts which accompany this virtual machine cover several of the core capabilities of conducting application lifecycle management with Visual Studio 2010. Each document can be used by an individual in a hands-on-lab capacity, to learn how to perform a given set of tasks, or used by a presenter to deliver a demonstration or classroom-style training. Unlike the beta 2 release, 100% of these labs target Tailspin Toys to help ensure a consistent storytelling experience. Software quality: Authoring and Running Manual Tests using Microsoft Test Manager 2010 Introduction to Test Case Management with Microsoft Test Manager 2010 Introduction to Coded UI Tests with Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Debugging with IntelliTrace using Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Software architecture: Code Discovery using the architecture tools in Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Understanding Class Coupling with Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Using the Architecture Explore in Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate to Analyze Your Code Software Configuration Management: Planning your Projects with Team Foundation Server 2010 Branching and Merging Visualization with Team Foundation Server 2010 “ Check out Brian’s Post for more info including download instructions…

    - by Sam Abraham
As you might know, I lived and worked on LI, NY for 11 years before relocating to South Florida. As I will be visiting my family who still live there in the first week of June, I couldn't resist reaching out to Dan Galvez, LI  .Net User Group Leader, and asking if he needed a speaker for June's meeting. Apparently the stars were lined up right and I am now scheduled to speak at my "home" group on June 3rd, which I am pretty excited about. Here is a brief abstract of my talk and speaker bio. What's New in MVC2 We will start by briefly reviewing the basics of the Microsoft MVC Framework. Next, we will look at the new features introduced in the latest and greatest MVC2. Many new enhancements were introduced to both the MS MVC Framework and to VS2010 to improve developers' experience and reduce development time. We will be talking about new MVC2 features such as: Model Validation, Areas and Template Helpers. We will also discuss the new built-in MVC project templates that ship with VS2010. • RRAS server 2003 one nic vpn encrypted

    - by Daniel Woodhead
Hi All, I have a a machine installed with Server 2003 standard on it. It is behind a standard adsl router. I have setup RRAS access on it with under the custom setting and selected just vpn as the machine only has one nic installed. I can connect to the server and it all works fine. I'm just wondering where the settings are to say that it is data encrypted. I know in xp when setting up a vpn you can check the option to encrypt the data, but doing this in server 2003 there isn't the option so thought i would try and use rras. The main reason that i want to do this is that xp only allows one connection at a time. Dan

  • How one does qualify as a Web UI Developer?

    - by Duralumin
I have about 20 years of experience with programming, most of that on the job, and right now, I define myself as a Web Developer, because I think about half my expertise lies in the all too extended "web" field, both server side and client side, and because in the last years I'm mostly doing web development. I know my javascript, jQuery, jQueryUI, HTML4-5, css2-3 and some frameworks like backbone.js and angularJS Since university I've always been interested in Man-Machine Interaction, UI and UX. Recently, I saw the label "Web UI Developer" tossed around, and I thought that would be something I would like to qualify for. And I'd really like to qualify with confidence. I didn't find any certificate or similar, and I don't think there are any. Is the only way to qualify as a Web UI Developer having a job as one? What are the skills I need to have, and the resources I can use to acquire them?

  • Wozu eigentlich Oracle Linux?

    - by Manuel Hossfeld
Sie trägt den Titel: "Oracle Linux Takes Its Place in the Operating Systems Market".

In short terms, he thought of a very nice way of combining both WeakReference and SoftReference in our weak and soft caches so that they would provide exactly the same functionality without having to deal with those reference queues at all. • Why do we need fork to create new process

    - by user3671483
In Unix whenever we want to create a new process, we fork the current process i.e. we create a new child process which is exactly the same as the parent process and then we do exec system call to replace the child process with a new process i.e. we replace all the data for the parent process eith that for the new process. Why do we create a copy of the parent process in the first place and why don't we create a new process directly? I am new to Unix please explain in lay-man terms.

  • Quote of the Day: Dissenting Opinions

    - by BuckWoody
Seems in our current climate the only thing we can’t tolerate is someone else’s thoughts. The sides of the arguments we hear are those that are the most shrill. In that environment, you’ll notice there are some people in the back that don’t speak up – but are troubled by the discord. Those may be the people you really want to hear from. “It is the man who does not want to express an opinion whose opinion I want.“ - Abraham Lincoln Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

  • App Store: Profitability for Game Developers

    - by Bunkai.Satori
Recent days, I've been spending significant time in discovering chances of profitability of AppStore for developers. I have found many articles. Some of them are highly optimistic, while other are extremely skeptical. This article is extremely skeptical. It even claims to have backed its conclusions by objective sales numbers. This is another pesimistic article saying that games developed by single individuals get 20 downloads a day. Can I kindly ask to clarify from business viewpoint whether average developers publishing games and software on AppStore can cover their living expenses, even, whether they can become profitable? Is it achievable to generate revenues of 50.000 USD yearly on AppStore for a single developer? I would like to stay as realistic as possible. Despite the question might look subjective, a good business man will be able to esitmate chances for profitability and prosperity within AppStore.

  • Worldwide Web Camps

    - by ScottGu
Over the next few weeks Microsoft is sponsoring a number of free Web Camp events around the world.  These provide a great way to learn about ASP.NET 4, ASP.NET MVC 2, and Visual Studio 2010. The Web Camps are two day events.  The camps aren’t conferences where you sit quietly for hours and people talk at you – they are intended to be interactive.  The first day is focused on learning through presentations that are heavy on coding demos.  The second day is focused on you building real applications using what you’ve learned.  The second day includes hands-on labs, and you’ll join small development teams with other attendees and work on a project together. We’ve got some great speakers lined up for the events – including Scott Hanselman, James Senior, Jon Galloway, Rachel Appel, Dan Wahlin, Christian Wenz and more.  I’ll also be presenting at one of the camps. Below is the schedule of the remaining events (the sold-out Toronto camp was a few days ago): Moscow May 19-19 Beijing May 21-22 Shanghai May 24-25 Mountain View May 27-28 Sydney May 28-29 Singapore June 04-05 London June 04-05 Munich June 07-08 Chicago June 11-12 Redmond, WA June 18-19 New York June 25-26 Many locations are sold out already but we still have some seats left in a few of them.  Registration and attendance to all of the events is completely free.  You can register to attend at www.webcamps.ms. Hope this helps, Scott

  • Web Development Law/Ownership of Website

    - by Jackson Buddingh
I'm a budding web developer, and I wondered if it was illegal to edit a website for a client to include a link that says 'encourage the owner of this site to pay their web developer' and follows up with a pre-made email encouraging the man to pay me. Here are the conditions: I've completed the work for the contract. I've asked to be paid, and tried to set up meetings with the owner. I've informed the owner of the site that my work will not continue unless I am paid. I should have been paid nearly a month ago (12/27) Any thoughts other than small claims? This is my first web-development job!

  • Whole Lotta Virtualization Goin' On

    - by rickramsey
Lately we've published a lot of content about virtualization. Here's a sampling. Podcat: Technology Preview of Transcendent Memory Turns out that in a virtual environment, RAM is the bottleneck. Not because it's slow, it's not, but because each CPU still had to use its own RAM. Which gets expensive. In this podcast, Dan Magenheimer describes how Oracle and the open source community taught the guest kernel in Oracle Linux to share its memory with other CPU's. Transcendent memory will wind up saving large data centers a lot of money. Find out how. Tech Article: How to Use Oracle VM Templates This article describes how to prepare an Oracle VM environment to use Oracle VM Templates, how to obtain a template, and how to deploy the template to your Oracle VM environment. • DIY Coffee Table Arcade Hides Retro Gaming Inside

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Last week we showed you a nifty man-cave arcade-in-coffee-table build that was a bit, shall we say, exposed. If you’re looking for a sleek build that conceals its arcade-heart until it’s game time, this clean and concealed build is for you. Courtesy of IKEAHacker reader Sam Wang, the beauty of this build is that other than the rectangle of black glass in the center of the table–which could just as well be a design accent–there is no indication that the coffee table is a gaming machine when not in use. Slide out the drawers and boot it up, however, and you’re in business–full MAME arcade emulation at your finger tips. Hit up the link below to check out his full photo build guide. • BDD (Behavior-Driven Development) tools for .Net

    - by tikrimi
For several years, I use TDD (Test-Driven Development) to produce code. I no longer plans to work without using TDD. The use of TDD significantly increases code quality, but does not guarantee that the code is the code that corresponds to the requirements specifications (write the "right code" with BDD as opposed to the write "code right" with BDD). Dan North has described in an article in published in 2006 the foundations of the BDD (Behavior-Driven Development). In this article, he introduces the formalism "When Given Then". This formalism is used in all tools dedicated to BDD. This is a short list of open source BDD tools that you can use with .Net : SpecFlow: Here you can find an article in MSDN Magazine and 2 webcasts (http://channel9.msdn.com/posts/ASPNET-MVC-With-Community-Tools-Part-2-Spec-Flow-and-WatiN and http://channel9.msdn.com/posts/ASPNET-MVC-With-Community-Tools-Part-3-More-Spec-Flow-and-WatiN) published on Chanel9. NSpec: This is certainly the most used project. There are many examples on the web. StoryQ: This project is hosted on Codeplex. This small project is very simple to implement and very useful.
